Re: [Samba] Quickbooks files can't be shared w/ 3.0.11

2005-03-03 Thread Randy S
I had to add these to the share to get that working properly. I've
probably added some stuff that's not needed, but it worked, so I left
it. I think the oplocks setting is key though.

   create mask = 0777
   force create mode = 0777
   oplocks = no
force directory security mode = 0777

I want to find when the last login was. What should I look for?

Re: [Samba] Samba/win2k ??

2004-07-01 Thread Randy S
Usually you can just log the clients in the first time, map a network
drive letter to the share's they want, and check the remember password,
and reconnect at logon options.

That'll do what you want.
The default login name for network shares is the workstation user name.
For this reason I usu try to make the smb user names the same as the
workstation login usernames; keeps it simple. It is, however, easy
enough in 2k and XP to logon to network shares with different user name.

setup samba so that only users I allow can access the files? I want to do it
in such a way that samba uses the win2k logon as the username it looks for
and so that once the user logs onto a workstation they dont have to logon to
samba everytime they need to access something. I know I can block
workstations by way of the IP filter but would like to do it this other way.
This may be completely impossible so please let me know. thanks alot.

Re: [Samba] Re: Huge delays on login/first access from WinXP clients on samba 3.0.4 PDC

2004-06-19 Thread Randy S
I have a winxp slowdown problem which seems to go away when I turn
iptables off. My situation is different, but it's a worth a shot just to
see. I get a 20 sec directory listing delay with WinXP only, Win2k is
fine, and it only happens intermittantly.

This behavior really renders the samba domain controller service useless
here, but WinXP workgrouping is not an option. As another data point, w2k
also doesn't suffer from this problem.
Sorry for all this whining..

This effect doesn't happen with Win98SE as a domain client, or with a
WinXPpro client in workgroup mode.
The samba packages are from the ftp.suse.com/project/samba.
I've tried to rejoin this XPpro client under a new name, with no effect.
After dismount these delays, it works as expected :-(.
From reading the migration section in the HOWTO-Collection, I added a
add machine script with the same value as add user script
to smb.conf.
Any hints are highly appreciated.
TIA,
Pete

[Samba] Directory listing delay with WinXP and IPtables

2004-05-31 Thread Randy S
Sorry if this has been covered before.
I setup a new Samba server using RedHat EL 3, and samba 3.0.2-6.3E (the
version that comes with Redhat).

We were seeing an intermittant 20 seconcd delay when grabbing a
directory listing, but only from XP, win 2k was fine.

I couldn't completely nail down when the delay occured but it seemed to
be when the directory or share hadn't been accessed in a while, ~15mins
??. There was never a problem or delay seeing the samba server on the
browse list.

I turned off iptables and the delay has been drastically reduced, now
down to 2 secs, which is acceptable.

Obviously I'd like to turn iptables back on.
I'm wondering if there are any special port openings or other iptables
settings that need adjustments with XP; or if there are adjustments I
need to make to the XP clients. I've already tried the
RemoteComputer\NameSpace\ regkey fix to no avail.

It's a very basic iptables setup. I opened up the standard samba ports.
I've listed the output of 'iptables --list' below.

Any ideas?

[Samba] Quickbooks 2000 multiuser on Samba file server access denied

2002-05-06 Thread Randy S

Are there settings I need to add to get Quickbooks multiuser to work on a Samba
fileserver?

The Quickbooks data resides on a RedHat 7.2 box running Samba 2.2.1a. The
clients are Quickbooks 2000 pro; one is one client win98 and two are win2k. It
works fine as long as only one person is accessing the data. All users have
their Quickbooks software set to multiuser. When additional people try to
access the data they get an error stating that there are insufficient
priveleges or permissions. (sorry i don't have the exact text of the error but
i haven't seen it myself and am offsite)

Thanks tons in advance.

[Samba] How to setup backup-admin permissions

2002-05-01 Thread Randy S

I have a about ten Win2k machines connecting to a Linux Samba 2.2.1a file
server.

There are ten users each with their own home directory. Additionaly there is a
'Public' share and a 'Accounting' share.

One of the Win2K machines is set to backup these mounted shares using a simple
shell script and Winzip. The user that these scripts execute as is a standard
samba user, he has a special share that only he can see which shows him all of
the home dirs.

The problem I'm having is that he can see the top level home directories fine,
but can't descend into them to back them up. What is the preferred way to setup
permissions for this user to be able to backup all the home dirs using his
special share? Can I set a special permissions mask in the share config, or do
I need to create a special samba_admin group, or ... ??

thanks in advance.
