[Samba] Vista and System error 53 has occurred

2008-05-09 Thread Robert Pollard
Hi,

Problem:

Out of the blue Vista on my laptop decides it doesn't want to mount a share
over PPTP VPN connection. I can mount the share in the local network but I
can't do it over VPN. When trying to access the server, using net view
\\172.16.1.71 it shows the error in the subject.

Re: [Samba] Multiple IP addresses

2008-04-08 Thread Robert Pollard

Hey Greg,

I don't have a firewall in between the server and the Internet. I was
trying to do some benchmarks on file transfers and then I would disconnect
it after getting the benchmarks.

I believe I know why I couldn't reach the Samba shares though -- the Sun
X4200 M2 has been having configuration problems with the 4 ethernet ports.
I can get the nge0 (the first port) working fine which has our production
system on it. But, I can't get any other port to come up along with the
primary port.

Suggestion #2 seems like a possibility. So, the class A address I'm using
will need to be entered into the Hosts allow field?

For production, there will be a firewall and VPN access only. I have been
looking for a stable VPN router/client that works solid on all recent
Windows releases and haven't found one yet. I started using PPTP and it
seems to be the most stable of all, believe it or not.

Thanks for the help!

I have been trying to connect to Samba over the Internet as I have static
IP that is publicly available for connection. I can use this IP to
connect to our Intranet web site but Samba doesn't work correctly when
trying to connect to it from outside. Our internal network addresses
work fine. Even a VPN connection, which gets our internal address scheme
works. But, when trying to use the publicly available IP address to
connect to Samba it can't find it.

There are likely a couple things preventing access:

1. Did you open the Samba ports on your firewall? Most firewalls have
these ports closed by default.

2. Hosts allow/Hosts deny parameter. Is this set so that Samba will
actually respond to the subnet that you are trying to access Samba from?

IMO, opening Samba up to the internet is an inherently bad thing to do and
something that very rarely really needs to be done. Instead, you should
look at an ssh tunnel or an IPSec VPN.

I use IPsec VPN routers to connect my two offices, which are both on
different subnets and in different Citys. The routers I used are fairly
inexpensive, but work wonderfully and are very easy to setup:

Is there something I have to do other than tell it to use an alternate

different IP?

Thanks!

Re: [Samba] A good read

2008-02-04 Thread Robert Pollard
From what I remember of using a system under this type of profile in my
previous job, there were 2 home directories created when logging in locally
versus logging in with the domain login.

For example, I had rpollard as a local user on the computer I used and I had
rpollard with a domain login and a profile.

Correct me if I'm wrong but when I create these profiles on the domain
server and the user logs in, they will lose all of their personal setting
because it creates a new home directory?

If this is true, how do I make the transition seamless to using domain based
profiles?

Thank!

thats correct. so whatever work station they are at, they'll have their
my documents, email, etc. we do this because we have a rotating
schedule of people covering telephones in different areas, so while they
are on phone duty, they can still do their work and answer email.

have you read Samba 3 by Example? it covers some real world examples, ads
joins, etc.

i think you'd want to use a PDC w/ roaming profiles. that way you can
locate all of your user's data on your server and backup your server
instead of a lot of clients. and you'll definitely want a PDC/BDC setup
when you have branch offices. for host name lookup use dynamic dns dhcp.
there's plenty of howtos on how to set that up too, but I can send you my
configs too.

Re: [Samba] Problem accessing Samba shares simultaneously by multipleusers

2008-01-29 Thread Robert Pollard
One suggestion of the top of my head is Subversion. I believe it supports
file locking for simultaneous development.
What little I read about it a while back it would allow you to control the
locking.
It's main purpose is version control which is needed as well if you have
multiple developers.

But our requirement is that multiple users will be accessing the same file
at the same time will perform read/write/save simultaneously. It should

Please help me in this regard.IT is required immediately and it is very

I added myself into OpenLDAP and deleted my user account from /etc/passwd.
Now samba complains in the log file:

Jan 25 10:17:56 roark smbd[2767]: build_sam_account: smbpasswd database

however, I'm resolving my awilliam with nss_ldap, so I can ssh and su -l
awilliam fine. so shouldn't samba be able to get the user awilliam w/ uid
511 out of ldap via nss_ldap instead of looking for it directly in
/etc/passwd?

[Samba] Windows Vista password dialog keeps coming up

2008-01-24 Thread Robert Pollard
Hi,

I have come to my wits end again (lately, it's a very short trip). I have been
trying to connect to Samba 3.0.21b but Windows keeps throwing up the logon
dialog. I'm using Map network drive to try to mount this share.

It seems the problem is only on the Windows side since I have tested the
connection through the Unix account. Both user id and password work fine.
I've tested it through the command line on the Unix server using smbclient
//cva/cva_images -U cva and it works fine there since it gives me the smb
prompt and I can execute commands (ls to look at the directory, etc.).

For some reason I cannot authenticate through Windows (Vista by the way).

I have 2 other accounts and they work fine. Anything you see in the file that
may be something that is stupid please point it out. SMB/NetBIOS, etc. is all
relatively new to me. BTW, I've tried it without valid users and it doesn't
work.

The images and bernardy_images mounts work fine. No authentication
problems.

Subject: [Samba] Windows Vista password dialog keeps coming up

Hi,

I have come to my wits end again (lately, it's a very short trip). I
have been trying to connect to Samba 3.0.21b but Windows keeps throwing
up the logon dialog. I'm using Map network drive to try to mount this
share.

It seems the problem is only on the Windows side since I have tested the
connection through the Unix account. Both user id and password work
fine. I've tested it through the command line on the Unix server using
smbclient //cva/cva_images -U cva and it works fine there since it
gives me the smb prompt and I can execute commands (ls to look at the
directory, etc.).

For some reason I cannot authenticate through Windows (Vista by the
way).

I have 2 other accounts and they work fine. Anything you see in the
file that may be something that is stupid please point it out.
SMB/NetBIOS, etc. is all relatively new to me. BTW, I've tried it
without valid users and it doesn't work.

The images and bernardy_images mounts work fine. No authentication
problems.

I don't know the answer to your first question. To edit this local
security policy on a Vista system:

Start:Programs:Administrative Tools:Local Security Policy:Local
Policies:Security Options:Network Security:LAN Manager authentication
level.

In the pull-down menu select Send LM NTLM - use NTLMv2 session
security if negotiated Then click on the Apply button. It might ask you
to reboot the system.

[Samba] Permissions issue -- cannot delete a folder/file

2008-01-23 Thread Robert Pollard
Hi,

I am relatively new to Samba although I've installed it and used it before my
knowledge is very shallow.

Environment:

Samba version is: 3.0.21a
Platform: Sun X4200 M2, AMD Opteron running Solaris 10
Client: Windows Vista

Situation:

I am trying to allow a user to copy folders from her desktop system to the SMB
share that is mounted on her computer. I am using a different login to mount
the share on her computer. The login was created on the server side.

After copying a folder to the server she can't delete the folder. The login
used to mount the share is the owner of the folder and the permissions are set
to 755.

So, I went to the command line and tried to delete the folder and it prompted
me to verify that I wanted to delete each subfolder that was protected. But,
when I create a folder/file in this folder from the command line I can delete
it with no questions asked.

Looking at the permissions from the Window side I only have Read Execute and
Read permission on each file in the folders. If I don't have permission to
write I shouldn't have permission to delete either.

The question:

Why is it that I am the owner of the folder/files, I have Read/Write/Execute
Unix permission as the owner (755) but I can't delete the folder after copying
it to the server?

Gripe session: (Ignore this if you don't have time or don't care)

I originally had planned to allow the user to have 2 mount points on the same
server using different logins. Didn't realize that SMB protocol allows only
one login to the server at a time. What is up with that?
So, I had to reorganize the folders and permissions to allow 3 users to only
see their folder whilst the other user can see hers and the other 3 user's
folders.

Thanks in advance...

Re: [Samba] Permissions issue -- cannot delete a folder/file

2008-01-23 Thread Robert Pollard

How many aliases are allowed. I remember seeing an alias field in swat.

I have 4 logins that I was going to set up for the user that will be
maintaining all 4 directories. For reasons to lengthy to explain, I need 4
different mount points with separate logins.

Is this possible?

Thanks,

Robert

This is a Microsoft feature and it has always been that way. A single
user can not connect to the same server with more than one set of
credentials at a time.

This is just a client redirector limitation, you can work around it by
giving your server a netbios alias and connecting to this different name
and a new set of credentials (does not work with kerberos credentials
for obvious reasons, but works with NTLM auth).

Simo.
