[Samba] Samba errors Mac OS X server
Hi ! I have some windows users connected to a Apple Xserve running Mac OS X server 10.4.11 Some users have started complaining that it is taken a considerable time when saving data back to the shared SMB drive In my /var/log/samba/log/smbd it is full of the following errors [2012/03/15 14:40:18, 0] darwin_acls.c:map_ntacl_to_darwinacl(1256) map_ntacl_to_darwinacl: [acl_create_entry] errno(12) - (Cannot allocate memory) Is this contributing to my problem? Even if it isn't what can I do to stop this filling up the log. What could possibly be causing slow writes back to the shared drive Apart from the above error message - the server doesn't appear to showing any other errors Tony Baker OneStep Solutions LLP Suite 89 Hadleigh Business Centre 351 London Road Hadleigh Essex SS7 2BT T-01702 426400 F-01702 556855 t...@onestep.co.uk This email, including any attachments, is confidential and intended solely for the person or organisation to whom it is addressed. Re: [Samba] Samba for Mac OS X
Samba is not a protocol. SMB is the protocol, and the protocol is owned by Microsoft. Samba is an open source package that implements a SMB server. It doesn't matter what kernel, or OS you are using, you can build Samba from the source code to run on your platform. As for the front-end... have you ever thought of learning about text config files? (seriously, there are some other front-ends such as SWAT and webmin. They, however, don't integrate with Aqua, but they should be usable) Of course, those steps are only necessary if you want to share resources from your Mac with the rest of your network. I don't believe the existing CIFS (SMB client in the kernel) client has gone away in OSX 10.7. -- Tony Hoover, Network Administrator KSU - Salina, College of Technology and Aviation (785) 826-2660 Don't Blend in... -- -Original Message- From: samba-boun...@lists.samba.org [mailto:samba-boun...@lists.samba.org] On Behalf Of Daniel Sutton Sent: Monday, September 19, 2011 8:03 PM To: samba@lists.samba.org Subject: [Samba] Samba for Mac OS X Dear Samba Community, Because Apple has transitioned away from the open-source SAMBA protocol for their new 10.7 release of Mac OS X, I was wondering if there is a third-party solution to fill this void. OSX 10.7 still has an SMB/CIFS client, although the current beta (10.7.2) isn't able to connect to a Samba-Share due to authentication problems, but I don't know if this will affect the final version. To have a SMB/CIFS-Share shown up in Finder you'll have to announce the Service via Bonjour using port 445. Samba3 itself is available as MacPorts Portfile: http://www.macports.org/ports.php?by=librarysubstr=samba3 Of course you will not have a posh GUI, and you don't need Samba to connect to an SMB/CIFS-Share. Re: [Samba] samba log - mac osx - console output - hacking evidence?

This E-Mail address is for reporting security vulnerabilities in the Samba software. The logs do show that the same server is running and those logs show the normal startup and shutdown of the nmbd name server and the smbd session servers to provide sharing service. Your configuration file does show you offering a share in a Public folder in your home directory and a Public share under mdsp. The both indicate that guest is allowed to connect, which is probably not the most secure configuration. But I'm guessing that's Apples default setup for users that are added to a system plus a system wide public share. I don't know. I don't use Macs. But nothing looks malicious in there at all. I have a simple question regarding your product. My macbook pro console log for samba while running mac osx snow leopard shows data that appears to indicate that my computer has been connected via this software to share files. I have never used any file sharing software nor did I know what samba was prior to discovering these logs though I have other reasons to believe that I may have been hacked. I have contacted Apple support and they did not have any information for me not knowing about samba at all. Can you please take a quick look at the data pasted below and confirm if this indicates without a doubt that my computer had been connected via the samba file sharing software? Does the presence of this data in my console log indicate that samba is the only reason for it to appear or could this data have been created by software other than samba? If I had never heard of samba much less ever used it or any other file sharing then how did this data get in my log files? Is there any data within the logs or in any other related folder or file which would provide information about the identity of the computer which was connected such as a username, a password or an IP address? I have a copy of the entire hard drive in case there are other files that I may need to examine in order to get to the bottom of this. The fact that IP addresses and user names are NOT showing up in that log is telling you nobody has connected. I have pasted data below taken from logs and also from a file called smb.shares also found on my hard drive. Thank you in advance for your time in responding to these very important questions. [Samba] samba and mac
Hi everybody, I testing a samba 3.0.24 server on debian 4.0r1 in a network with mac, linux and windows client that have to access the samba share. Now all is working good but a client with mac os x 10.3.9 still has some problems: I can connect to the samba shares and I can create, modify and delete files. Also I can copy files between mac and samba using the terminal and the CP command. The only thing I can't do is drag and drop file in the samba share. Has anyone some ideas about this matter? When I copy data on Mac to Samba share from terminal everythink is OK. I found that resolution of this problem is disable locking os samba share. Thank you Stewart, Going back to basics, I checked what ports smbd listens: netstat -lnp |grep smb tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:445 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 8330/smbd My smb.conf had an 'smb ports' option with a note: #Added ports option to clear the error: 'getpeername failed. Error was Transport endpoint is not connected' smb ports = 445 I commenting out the line, restarting samba, and now smbd is listening on tcp 139 and 445 and mac clients can connect just fine. netstat -lnp |grep smb tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:139 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 8330/smbd tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:445 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 8330/smbd Thank you for your help. [Samba] Samba with Mac files?

[Samba] Samba amiga-mac
Hi I have an ethernet link between these two machines. I can share an internet connection with the mac as the host. I can ping the amiga from Mac with 100% packets returned. I can see a link to Amiga in the network window in the launcher on the Mac. However when I try to 'connect to server' from the Mac, Genesis on the Amiga refuses all connections on port 139. Same thing happens when I try and launch the swat interface via the browser on the Amiga: access to port 901 denied. I have tried editing the samba.config file by hand to set up shares on the amiga. I have endlessly changed settings both for samba and genesis with no obvious effect. If any one has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated. [Samba] Samba on Mac doesn't see include shares
I'm having an annoying problem. On my Linux Server (with Samba 3.0.3) I am using the samba option of 'include = /etc/samba/smb.%U.conf' so that users mostly only see shares that specifically belong to them. This approach works perfectly on Windows XP workstations. After a user logs onto the Linux server -- by simply clicking on a share that's accessible to all users -- the user then can see the shares that are only supposed to be visible to him or her. But under Mac OS X 10.3.3, I'm not having any success with this strategy. Users can see the shares that are accessible to everyone. However, even after logging into the server and viewing one of those shares, the Mac users can never see the shares that specifically belong to THEM. Does the include option not work in Macs? In my samba logs, I can see that the Mac users are logging in. But they can never see their own shares listed in the dropdown box of available shares. And even if the Mac users try to log in manually to those shares after connecting to a generally-available share (e.g., by going to the Connect dialog box and typing smb://username:[EMAIL PROTECTED]/samba_share_name the private shares can't be accessed. Is there a way around this problem? I have no issues on the Mac when I try to access shares that are accessible to all users in a particular group, for instance. Only when I try to access individual shares that use this include option. Hope somebody knows the answer. It's very important to me that private shares not be visible by users other than those to whom they belong. Re: [Samba] Samba and Mac OSX 10.3
If you mean login as in authenticate the whole machine off of a Samba server, the key variable there is whether you are using LDAP or not as the backend of said server. If thats the case, then yes - you can feel free to email me off list and Ill tell you what I know (not much, but Im sure I can point you to the proper resources). Its not a Samba thing at that point, but rather an LDAP thing. If you just mean mount the drive, then read on... If you don't mind some Applescript (I don't really know it - but if my instructions aren't clear just email me off list) I have a solution for you. Fire up the applescript editor and put this into it: tell application Finder activate mount volume smb://username:[EMAIL PROTECTED]/share/ end tell Where you put the appropriate information into the volume info. Then save it as an executable, then put it into the login items. Not pretty, but it works. You can take out the username/password information if you want it to ask for it every time the machine fires up the script. There are probably other ways to do this, but this is something that has worked since early versions of OS X so I haven't bothered to look around. Under Panther I do believe you can put an smb mount share in using the Netinfo manager, but I haven't ever done this (since said ugly workaround gets the job done and I haven't bothered to fix it). -- Anthony Hess Support Systems Analyst, Sr. CoEM Computer Services On Wed, 14 Jan 2004, Wayne Dozier(Samba) wrote: Is there a way to set up a mac running panther to ask or a login to the samba server every time it boots?
