[Samba] help.. please.. help!!!
hi , sorry if I bother you ,but I need your help urgently I am installing ubuntu with samba as PDC... but I cant make it could you give me some manual or any documentation about this... I already follow the documentation but when im trying to join a winxp or win7... I'm not sure that it's a problem, I just know that when you do a net ads join, that value is what tells Active Directory your computer name. At least that is how I've seen Samba behave. I don't know what happens if you don't have that set. I'm sure someone here knows. I am a bit confuse by your specification of port 139. Comment out that line and see if you have better luck. For giggles, set your server string to the same as your hostname and rejoin the domain. Also, have you taken other steps to configure AD such as editing your krb5.conf file? FW: [Samba] Help Please! - Copying files from Windows to Samba share loses connection
Hello all, I put in value for the server string and tried a test copy. The copy went along for a little while and I got the Windows lost connection error. The copy process is always stopping on the same file which is 185MB. I was trying to view the logs but it looks like the copy locked up the server. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance!! I put in a server string with the same name as the hostname.
I commented out the port 139 line in the smb.conf file.
I restarted smb and winbind and rejoined the Domain.
I verified that the server was joined successfully.
I tried the copy again and the same issue.
I am running Suse Linux Ent Server 9 for IBM Power.
Samba version is 3.0.4-SUSE

That's a pretty old version of Samba. There may be some bugs giving you
fits, but some of the veterans here may know more.
Other than the errors you are seeing in your Samba logs, what behavior
are you seeing on your Windows box? Are you pushing from the Windows box
or pulling from the Samba server?

I am copying from an administrative file share, on our current Fileserver
(Windows Server 2000), vio a mapped drive on my PC to the samba share. The
error I see on my PC is Network share is no longer available. I not
seeing errors in the logs on the Windows file server.

I would suggest mounting the share on the Samba server and pull the
files directly and cut out the man in the middle (your PC).
That's still an old version of Samba. Is this box set in stone as an
older version of Suse/Samba or have you considered upgrading Suse and/or
migrating to another (newer) Linux distro? The reason I mention it is if
you are seeing errors copying files in this instance, I strongly suspect
you will see unacceptable behavior in other areas. You might find a
solution eventually, but upgrading has a great chance of solving this
and other problems that might pop up.

join, that value is what tells Active Directory your computer name. At
least that is how I've seen Samba behave. I don't know what happens if
you don't have that set. I'm sure someone here knows.

line and see if you have better luck. For giggles, set your server
string to the same as your hostname and rejoin the domain. Also, have
you taken other steps to configure AD such as editing your krb5.conf

This box is not in production yet. I think the reason this is an older
software distribution is because it is for an IBM power server. Usually
they are behind in versions. I agree that if I am running into problems
with just a file copy I probably will run into other issues later on.
Could I upgrade just Samba? How hard of a task is it to update samba? I
don't know if I will need a special version since it is an IBM power
version.

I would suggest mounting the share on the Samba server and pull the
files directly and cut out the man in the middle (your PC).
That's still an old version of Samba. Is this box set in stone as an
older version of Suse/Samba or have you considered upgrading Suse and/or
migrating to another (newer) Linux distro? The reason I mention it is if
you are seeing errors copying files in this instance, I strongly suspect
you will see unacceptable behavior in other areas. You might find a
solution eventually, but upgrading has a great chance of solving this
and other problems that might pop up.

I haven't gone the roll my own route yet. I have been taking what the
distros provide. Makes my job of installing patches quicker (not to be
confused with timelier). Plus it makes rolling out test servers quicker
if I just take the provided packages. Although I guess if one knows the
1-2-3 of compiling Samba code by heart, it would be almost as quick.
I don't have any Linux on Power experience. I know Ubuntu 6.06 has a
Power version. You could give it a try. It will be supported for quite a
while without requiring a paid subscription unless you want paid
support. If you are a Suse junkie, I think Suse 10 has a Power version
as well. Ubuntu 6.06 uses Samba 3.0.22 and integrates quite nicely with
AD. I don't know what version of Samba Suse 10 has.
Maybe someone reading the list can provide better insight on your
version of Samba, but I just don't have any experience with it. I can
tell you that I ran into all sorts of problems trying to integrate an
older version of Samba into AD. Upgrading to 3.0.22 made all my pain go
away after I gained functional understanding of extended attributes and
ACLs (although 3.0.24 gave me all new heartburn). Your mileage may vary.

I am having problems configuring Samba as a stand alone server. Here is my smb.conf [global] workgroup = SCL netbios name = ODIN security = share log level = 4 [images] comment = ODIN path = /odin/images Here is the information I am recieiving in the log.smbd. Your smb.conf doesn't look anywhere near complete. The error you are getting is that it is not finding your user account. Since your smb.conf doesn't tell which backend to use, it defaults to smbpasswd. I guess jason isn't in there. Your workgroup is still set to SCL, so it may be looking in that domain for the jason account. If you don't want it do this, change the workgroup = line. I suggest trying SWAT to set up your server. It has a wizard to create a stand alone server and should flesh out your smb.conf at the same time. Set up your share using SWAT as well. And read the help information for security = share. [Samba] help please with winbind...
All, Can anyone help me with an issue I seem to be having with my samba/winbind (3.0.9) install on Solaris 8. I've got to the stage where Samba and winbind seem to be working ok but... The # getent group command returns all the unix groups and only one Windows groups - Domain Admins - I think I'm really close with this and am unsure where the problem could be. With the # getent passwd command this works fine and returns all the users in Unix and PC Domain with a group id of 11803 for PC accounts but I can't then check the PC group name with # getent group|grep 11803 because it doesn't list this group only Domain Admins!!! Your help would be greatly appreciated and if more info is needed please let me know. NEED HELP ASAP, Trying to compile samba with ADS/LDAP/KRB5 support. Followed instructions to install heimdal, then openldap, then samba. Getting errors: vasprintf and asprintf multiply-defined, conflict between /usr/local/lib/libroken.a and lib/snprintf.o /usr/local/lib/libroken.a is Heimdal library. Using latest versions for heimdal, openldap and samba, with gcc_v3.4. Really appreciate any help. Hi, I've spent my days configuring Samba client to join to a Samba Domain Controller, which the database is LDAP at another server. Right now, i've setup the client with workgroup = AJK-ITS security = domain domain master = no local master = yes domain logons = yes with ldap paramaters to point to LDAP server. Is it effecient enough when sama client bind directly to the LDAP server? It make difficulties when make access list to securing the systems. What configuration should I do to the Samba Client? can someone please tell me why everyone else can connect to my samba server but me? I mean I even went as far as installing a new OS (down-graded back to win2k). I really need help trying to figure out why. If someone can help me in figuring that out, please let me know. And by the way...I already tried the router thingsame issue. So the router doesnt matter because I disabled the firewall issue. Even my ISP connected. So someone please help if at all possible. Hi, samba experts! We got a UNIX machine and would like to share a disk drive with PC users. However we manage to have one account working, but not any other accounts. I used `smbpasswd -a user` to add user and password, I made sure the username and password are the same as UNIX account and the windows account. But whenever I tried to access the samba server and the disk drive, I'm prompted to regive my username and password. Further tracing showed that the account information I gave are invalid. Then I used `smbclient -L samba-server -N`, I got error msg of Domain=[] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 2.2.0] tree connect failed: ERRSRV - ERRbadpw (Bad password - name/password pair in a Tree Connect or Session Setup are invalid.) What does that mean? Where should I check the bad password? Thanks a lot! Hello all, I am trying to implement a samba Domain Controller on a small 5 client network main usage will be centralized data storage and local Workstation Security. Network Back ground All client workstations are Windows XP pro., the Server is a Clark Connect 1.3 Box. The Client PC's are 1.5Ghz with 512MB memory and 10/100 nics, The server is a 2Ghz 1GB memory and a 10/100 nic. The problem I'm having is when the Client Work stations connect they get the Following Message Your Password Expires today Would you like to update. For Technically inclined people just clicking no and going on with your life is fine but for the Avg. User this becomes bothersome is there any way to fix this problem? Thank you, Marc A. Error = Connection reset by peer I have also seen write_socket_data errors. We have checked the switches and see no errors on them. These are various clients, some win2k,98,Nt4 etc. I have tried different versions of samba and made my smb.conf as basic as possible. Usually that error means the client disconnected with a TCP RST packet. Samba doesn't know why. Us a network sniffer to catch a client doing this and then investigate the networking hardware/software between that client and the server.
