Re: [Samba] samba 2.2.8a

2005-06-14 Thread eric roseme

Sorry for the late reply - I was out last week.

You need to increase your nfile and nproc parms (see Admin Guide pg 258
[http://www.docs.hp.com/en/B8725-90074/B8725-90074.pdf]).

I delivered a tuning presentation at HPWorld in 2003. If you want a
copy, email me off list and I'll send it to you.

Also, the version you are running is not supported. You should pull
down either the current 3.0 CIFS version, or the supported 2.2 version from:

[Samba] samba-2.2.8a-220 and OSX

2004-10-05 Thread Gunther Grelczak
Hi to all.
We have a samba-2.2.8a-220 Server. The server works still fine
with several clients (W9x, W2k, WXP and smbmounts via Linux).
But now I have to connect an Apple OSX and now I have one
problem. From OSX I can connect to the shares, browse the file
listing. But when a file is copied into a share, the file is on
the destination with 0 (zero) Bytes filesize. The linux uid and
gid are correctly set, according to the parameters from smb.conf.

This phenomen occurs only with MacOSX. What happens there ???
BTW: I habe also a test server with Samba 3 and there is no
problem to connect and upload files. But I cannot change the
samba 2 Server now.

Thanks in advance.

And the connection fails.

Also I noticed that the passwd file has the following rights:
-rw---1 root root 753 Aug 22 22:42 smbpasswd

I tried to change the permission to 640 by issuing the :
chmod 640 /etc/samba/smbpasswd

-rw-r-1 root root 753 Aug 22 22:42 smbpasswd

(like the documentation states but after I try to logon the file permission are
reset to 400!!!???)
-rw---1 root root 753 Aug 22 22:42 smbpasswd

Any Ideas on what the problem is.

I also include my smb.conf file configuration see below:

[Samba] Samba (2.2.8a) as domain member

2004-06-11 Thread Holger Eitzenberger
Hi,

I have still a problem with Samba 2.2.8a with LDAP configured
as a domain member. The underlying filesystem is XFS with ACL
support.

According to smbpasswd the host successfully joind our domain but
when I access shares on the host I see

HOSTNAME\user

instead of

DOMAIN\user

in the Windows 2000 Security Settings. I would be very glad if
you comment on my smb.conf.

Is there a way to test whether the host is still in the domain?

Thx in advance.

[Samba] Samba 2.2.8a - winbind do I need ACL for letting users change their file permissions?

Hi,

I have a working installation of Samba 2.2.8a on Mandrake 9.2 - kernel

Everything works fine except that I cannot give the NT user administrator

Here follows my smb.conf

IIRC, Mandrake 9.2 shipped with a 2.4.22 kernel? If you'vekep up with

IIRC, the 9.2 kernels should have ACL support already (at least on
ext2/ext3), 9.1 had support for ACLs on XFS/ext2/ext3, 9.0 had support on
XFS, and 8.2 had support on XFS. But, if permissions aren't working (users
should be able to modify the permissions of files they own), then ACLs
won't help you much (as only the owner or root can change ACLs).

Of course, also ensure that your permissions changes aren't being
prevented by your share definitions.

Buchan

Re: [Samba] Samba (2.2.8a or 3.0.2a) + WinXP not updating roaming profiles on logout

2004-04-07 Thread Jim Shanks
Here's the smb.conf on my test server, I tried it last night, and the
profiles are storing fine. You should note the %a at the end of the
profiles share. That allow you to differentiate between different
versions of the OS (NT/2K/XP) etc. I used SWAT to create this one, so it
has been optimized and some of the unneeded/default perameters don't show
up. If you open this one in SWAT, you will see all of the defaults.

RE: [Samba] Samba (2.2.8a or 3.0.2a) + WinXP not updating roamingprofiles on logout

2004-04-06 Thread Lewis Shobbrook
Hi Jeremy,

Can't help with the romaing profiles, but can with this one

As another note, I get the following message in log.machine
 name since going to samba3...

 [2004/04/05 23:16:16, 0]
 rpc_server/srv_util.c:get_domain_user_groups(372)
get_domain_user_groups: primary gid of user [jeremy] is not
 a Domain group !
get_domain_user_groups: You should fix it, NT doesn't like
 that [2004/04/05 23:16:20, 1] smbd/service.c:make_connection_snum(705)
aerith (192.168.0.3) connect to service jeremy initially as
 user jeremy (uid=1000, gid=4) (pid 22991)

You need to re-assign the primary group for the user to a windows group
such as domain users.
An easy way to do this is through the NT4 usermanager package USRMGR.EXE
mentioned somewhere in the SAMBA 3 Doc's, I believe still available from
microsoft.

Cheers,

Lewis

Re: [Samba] Samba (2.2.8a or 3.0.2a) + WinXP not updating roaming profiles on logout

2004-04-06 Thread Jim Shanks
I have working 3.0.2a and 2.2.8a domain controllers. The only thing that
I see that is significantly different in your conifguration to our
configuration is that we have a [profiles] share.

[profiles]
comment = Personal Profile Folder

Hope it helps,
Jim

I have a linux box running samba configured as my PDC with roaming
profiles. Everything was running great until I upgraded to WinXP
instead of Win2K. Now, when I log out of my XP session, my profile
doesn't get uploaded to the server. The local copy remains in effect
until I reboot. When I log out, the following message gets sent to the
 event logger:

 [quote]
Windows has detected that Offline Caching is enabled on the Roaming
Profile share - to avoid potential profile corruption, Offline Caching
must be disabled on shares where roaming user profiles are stored.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at

I searched around and found an email which suggested adding the
following to my profiles share to fix this warning message (not sure if
it's supposed to fix my problem, but I figured it was worth a shot):

[Samba] Samba 2.2.8a Print Driver Issues Solaris 8

2004-03-01 Thread ed vidra
Hi;

I've reciently upgraded 3 print servers on Solaris 8 from Samba 2.0.9 to
2.2.8a and am running in to difficulties related to clients being able to
configure printer drivers. I do not use the [print$] for serving up drivers
to install from the print server. I provide access to drivers from a common
share from the Microsoft Domain the print servers participate in. I'm still
using the printer driver = parameter for specifying the type of printer
driver to look for so the customers can then browse to the proper
sub-directory from the common share and install the printer driver. This
all works fine, but the problem comes in when the customer is trying to
alter the Printing Preference for the print queue once built, the customer
is unable to change then apply the changes and have them stored to be used.
(i.e. change from portrait to landscape, the print in landscape format from
an application like MS Powerpoint). The print job can be sent, but it will
come out using the default settings instead, and is printed as such.

I've included the top part of my current configuration file smb.conf for
review. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

After upgrading from samba 2.2.8a - 3.0.2 on our samba pdc I see a
different nmbd behavior in handling dns proxy relevant request.
Initially nmbd is answering wins requests for dns names correctly.
Some hours later these entries seem to be forgotten!? Only pure wins
entries seem to remain in nmbd's positive answers.

In contrary samba 2.2.8a always answered dns proxy wins requests
correctly.

Was there any basic change in nmbd's wins/dns concept that i did miss?
Anybody else sees this?

Any hint appreciated,

Markus.

2004-01-26 Thread shaf sum

Record not available when our client try to access
the FoxPro database found on the file server. It
happens every day in the morning before the users

You might want to ensure you have oplocks turned off for your foxpro
files. Best option to use is 'veto oplocks' on the foxpro file
extensions.

to add

veto oplocks files = *.dbf, *.cdx, *.sel ???

If you had read the manpage you would have seen the example of how to
construct the list.

veto oplock files = /*.dbf/*.cdx/*.sel/

should do it.

[Samba] Samba 2.2.8a with Solaris 8 NIS

2004-01-14 Thread Spike Burkhardt
All,

The basic info is that I'm running Samba 2.2.8a on a Solaris 8 machine
with NIS. The hostname is altair and is a NIS slave. As a standard
practice every employee get's a NIS account and altair is their samba
home. NIS is set to compatibility mode in /etc/nsswitch.conf. Samba
security is set to server. It appears that for users to map to their
samba share, we need to have an entry for them in the netgroup file.
The side effect of this is that they also get command line access which
we don't want. Does anyone have a solution for this problem?

TIA,

Spike

Hi,

With

unix password sync = No
ldap password sync = No
you wont get any passwd syncronisation. If you use the later you
wouldn't need any other passwd related parameters, since it uses the
LDAP EXOP operation supported on OpenLDAP 2.0.x-2.2.x I think.

Geza

[Samba] Samba 2.2.8a: Deleting all files

2004-01-12 Thread samba
I have a directory on Unix exposed as a Samba share. All the filenames are greater
than 8.3 format. When I go to this directory from a DOS
prompt and do 'del *.*', I get a bunch of errors 'Unable to find file ...'..

But, if the directory contained 500 files, after the 'del *.*' it contains 400 files.

I repeat the del *.*, get a few more errors Unable to find file ... and now my files
are down to 300. And so on.

When I copy the directory to a native NTFS filesystem, I dont get these issues. del
*.* removes all files in one shot.

What is wrong here? Do I need to play with the mangling parameters in smb.conf? My
file names are something like 11.12.10.3 format. Most of the files have the first 11
characters the same.

If I do a 'dir /x', I get the 8.3 filenames fine with no apparent collision, so why
does del *.* have a problem?

Thanks for any help

that has begun to appear after 11i was installed on our server. File
access has become slow and unreliable, especially under high loads. As a
matter of fact, I had a logon script running a series of echo -- it was
executing them at about 1 line every 2 seconds. The way we solved the
problem was moving the Samba tree to a high-speed array; now it's flaky,
but faster at being flaky so it is not as noticeable. However, I'd
obviously like to correct the problem. The last gentleman who had this
problem never received a response (that was in 2001) -- let's see if
anyone has had any luck since.

I will include what I have determined to be relevant log entries -- though
I could be mistaken. Here is one PC's logon process:

[Samba] Samba 2.2.8a open Files malfunction ?

2003-12-29 Thread Schäfer Raumgestaltung
Hi Group,

having several Problems with Samba

Client Win2000 SP2
Server SUSE 9.0 SAMBA 2.2.8a

connection from Client to Server is fine (RW Access possible), but

a little Textfile opened in Windows Notepad (and changed) is not reported as
'Open File' by smbstatus -d

after opening another File (e.g. with Microsoft WORD)
--- smbstatus -d reports both files 'OPEN'
--- after a while in most! cases the littel TXT-File disappears from 'OPEN
Files List'

what's going wrong here? known Bugs ??

P.S. shutting down the Server by leaving the Files open on Win2K Client
I get no warning that Files are in use

How do I change this ?

[Samba] Samba 2.2.8a performance problem

2003-12-12 Thread Kelber Uzuelle Cardoso
Dear friends,

I am having some problems in transferring large files between a linux
box (Samba) and a Windows 2000 Professional workstation.
When I copy a file (about 150 Mbytes) from Windows 2000 Professional to
Linux Box everything is OK, but when copying the same file from the
linux box to the Windows 2000, it takes a very long time (and sometimes
an error ocurrs: The network resource may be unavailable).
Could you have any idea about this kind of problem?

Machines details:

Linux box:
-  Pentium III 700 Mhz;
-  256 Mb RAM;
-  120 Gb HD IDE;
-  Realtek 8139 network card chip (kernel module 8139too);
-  Mandrake 9.2 Linux;
-  Samba 2.2.8a with Winbind;

Windows station:
-  Pentium 4 2.8 GHz HT;
-  512 Mb RAM;
-  80 Gb HD IDE;
-  Realtek 8139 network card chip;
-  Windows 2000 Professional Service Pack 3;

Thanks in advance

RE: [Samba] samba 2.2.8a, XP pro workgroup question.

2003-11-26 Thread KD7NWG
Chris,
Thank you! The 'map to guest' worked great along with the setting to
enable password encryption. I can now use my laptop from another domain
on my workgroup samba share.

Thanks again!

Gang,
This is my first post here so if I screw up please let me know.

I run samba 2.2.8a on Solaris at home (UltraUX).
I have several XP pro and win98 clients on this same network
(192.168.1.x).

I feel that my primary problem is when I try to access the share it is
populating the username field 'Guest' and asking me for a password when
I want this share to be completely open regardless of workgroup or
domain name.

I have had this problem a bunch of times. I _believe_ that it is caused
by samba using the username/password and then failing (guest access
is only when there is no usernmae/password..does that make
sense?)..There is a setting which allows you to fallback to a username
if the
original username/password pair fails (in the docs this is said 'to
cause confusion for sys-admins') I believe if you poke around with 'map
to
guest' and 'bad password' you should be able to come up with a
solution.

This may or may not be possible, but I'd sure like to know if I can
make
this share work, without changing my laptops workgroup/domain name.

Here is my smb.conf;
---
# This is /usr/local/samba/lib/smb.conf

[global]
   netbios name = UltraUX
   workgroup = Galvinonline
   log level = 2
   log file = /var/adm/log/sambalog
   security = share
   wins support = yes
   hosts allow = 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0 127.0.0.1 EXCEPT 192.168.1.1
   hosts deny = ALL

[share]
   path = /share/
   browseable = yes
   guest ok = yes
   public = yes
   read only = no

I was under the impression that the settings; 'security = share',
'public = yes', and 'guest ok = yes' in my smb.conf would be all that's
required for this type of access to work but if anybody has any
suggestions or can provide help I'd be greatly appreciative.

If you have a document containing specific information regarding this
topic I'd love to read it.

Thanks,
~Nate

[Samba] samba 2.2.8a, XP pro workgroup question.

2003-11-25 Thread KD7NWG
Gang,
This is my first post here so if I screw up please let me know.

I run samba 2.2.8a on Solaris at home (UltraUX).
I have several XP pro and win98 clients on this same network
(192.168.1.x).
I'm on a TCP/IP network and access my shares using the IP, not the UNC
names.
I use the same workgroup name on all of my hosts and use 'share' level
security on the samba server and it is working great!

However, I now have a laptop (Windows XP pro) which I primarily use at
work which is part of a domain (different then my workgroup at home).
I'd like to start using the laptop to access my samba share when at home
(without changing the laptops workgroup/domain settings) and it's giving
me some trouble.

I feel that my primary problem is when I try to access the share it is
populating the username field 'Guest' and asking me for a password when
I want this share to be completely open regardless of workgroup or
domain name.

Basically I don't want to require a username or password AT ALL, even
when accessing the share from systems on a different workgroup/domain
(same subnet).

This may or may not be possible, but I'd sure like to know if I can make
this share work, without changing my laptops workgroup/domain name.

If I must succumb to forcing a login from the laptop I can, but I'd like
to know how, since the share is already populating the login name field
I don't even know how to override that, at this time.

Here is my smb.conf;

# This is /usr/local/samba/lib/smb.conf

[Samba] Samba 2.2.8a Solaris 9

2003-11-21 Thread Todd Johnson
We have Samba 2.2.8a working fine here in our office for file sharing
and print sharing. We wanted to now start using the PDC option of this
build. I have added the needed switches in the smb.conf file for a PDC
(verifed this through many FAQ's and Googles and Book walk-throughs).
The problem is this. When I try to add a client to the domain it
responds that the domain is not found and maybe I typed it wrong. It
backs about DNS. My DNS settings are fine. I have went through them a
few times already. We have spent a few hours troubleshooting this with
no luck. We feel that everyhing is correct in our smb.conf file. The
testparm prints out fine that these switches are in fact yes.

Anyone ever run across setting up a PDC function and then not be able to
FIND the PDC??

All the other options samba gives us are running properly (file share
and printing).

Todd

Re: [Samba] samba (2.2.8a) driver download fails

2003-11-18 Thread Gernot Hueber

Hi there,

I have a problem with the rpc driver stuff:

I have copied the driver files to //atlas/print$/W32X86 and WIN40
(via filesystem copy), added and set the driver without errors.
But getdriver reports no driver associatet with the printer?!
So reports below.
I am sure, this was working on this system.
When? What changed? You mean it was working with Samba-2.2.8a?

I tried to reinit the ntprinters.tdb, printing.tdb, nt_forms.tdb and
ntdrivers.tdb by removing and HUPPING all smbds (a plenty of users
are
on the server so I could not restart smbd cleanly).

Can anybody give me some advice.

Thanks

Gernot

PS Maybe an issue:
I copied, added, and set the driver several times in a script
(W32X86 WIN40 for each printer of the same type!)

begin
atlas# rpcclient -U root%sukt19wk -c 'getdriver HP_1200N_Kloib 1'
atlas
cmd = getdriver HP_1200N_Kloib 1
atlas#
end

enumdrivers is ok:
That's one of the most important parts.

enumdrivers 3 crashes :-(
IIRC, this is a not-yet-fixed bug in the 2.2.x series (where x = 4).

begin
atlas# rpcclient -U root%sukt19wk -c 'enumdrivers 3' atlas
cmd = enumdrivers 3

Segmentation fault (core dumped)
I remember this happening for me in Samba 2.2.8a also.

atlas#
end
So what? The proof of the pudding lies in the eating. Does
the driver download to your Win clients work? Do the Win
clients see the drivers? (on W2K/XP workstations right-click
the white background of the Samba Printers and Faxes folder
as seen in network neighbourhood, select Server Properties,
select Drivers tab and check if your drivers are visible.
first of all thank you for your patience.
The problem with the pudding is, driver download does not work out
on some w98 machines for some printers (The solution should be the
printer name length problem of w98 - it's test in progress, since I'm
not on location and win98 does not install a sshd ;-) )
My debugging turned out, that
atlas# rpcclient -U root% -c 'getdriver hp4p_ho 3' atlas | more
cmd = getdriver hp4p_ho 3
atlas#
returns nothing! This fact made me desperate. I tested getdriver with a
w2k - ok, with a samba (atlas) - nothing.
Should rpcclient getdriver work with a samba server as of version 2.2.8?
Thank you

Gernot

ntdrivers.tdb by removing and HUPPING all smbds (a plenty of users are
on the server so I could not restart smbd cleanly).

Can anybody give me some advice.

Thanks

Hi there,

I have a problem with the rpc driver stuff:

I have copied the driver files to //atlas/print$/W32X86 and WIN40 (via filesystem
copy), added and set the driver without errors.
But getdriver reports no driver associatet with the printer?!
So reports below.
I am sure, this was working on this system.
When? What changed? You mean it was working with Samba-2.2.8a?

I tried to reinit the ntprinters.tdb, printing.tdb, nt_forms.tdb and
ntdrivers.tdb by removing and HUPPING all smbds (a plenty of users are

the driver download to your Win clients work? Do the Win

select Drivers tab and check if your drivers are visible.

Try using smbtorture as a netbench simulator.

Also are there any internal performance enhancements for smbpasswd files
 of 15000 entries?

You might want to switch to a tdbsam for that.

I see the release for Solaris 8, will that work for Solrais 6?

I did a pkgadd and couldn't get samba to start on 2.6. Is there a different
download for 2.6, or isn't it supported by 2.2.8a

thanks,

[Samba] Samba 2.2.8a and 3.0.0

2003-10-18 Thread William Jojo

Samba Team,

How do I create simulated load on a samba server? I wish to use
feedback-directed program restructuring on AIX 5.2 to determine if
performance can be improved by rearranging the executable generated by the
IBM 6.0 compiler.

Mostly I'm determining what the upper bound on smbd's is in a
multiprogramming environment. I'm currently running about between 800 and
1000 smbd's a day on a 6-way 6H1 (RS64-III) with 24GB memory and 800 GB of
attached SSA disk for roaming profiles. All of this is being done with
2.2.8a.

I'm setting up my 3.0.0 test area on similar hardware, but wanted insight
from the experts on what you've done already to improve internal
performance as my approach is to improve cache hit ratio and translation
look-aside.

I've already tuned every piece of hardware to my abilities and even
implemented write-behind algorithms. I'm basically wringing out the towel
to see if there are any drops of peformance left to be found.

Are there any internal limitations with the TDB's, et al, where there may
be an upper bound on concurrent smbd's?

Also are there any internal performance enhancements for smbpasswd files
of 15000 entries?

We are looking at LDAP for storing passwords. What kind of improvement can
I expect when moving passwords from a flat file to a dynamic container?

On a related note, you guys rock! You are the reason we can do the above
with one server! You have saved us hundreds of thousands of US $'s on
licensing and servers alone! Your technical prowess is appreciated far
more than you know!

I have done some limited qualitative work only with tdbsam compared with
smbpasswd. The performance improvement with about 1100 entries was
significant. Parsing of the smbpasswd file causes quite a hit when there
are gazillions of entries. Use of tdbsam or ldapsam becomes quite
attractive as the number of account entries increases.

Also are there any internal performance enhancements for smbpasswd files
 of 15000 entries?

We are looking at LDAP for storing passwords. What kind of improvement can
I expect when moving passwords from a flat file to a dynamic container?

You might also check the performance of the 'tdbsam' facility that is
available with samba-3.0.x. You can use the 'pdbedit' tool to migrate your
existing smbpasswd file to the tdbsam passdb.tdb file.

In the Samba-HOWTO-Collection.pdf you will see a recommendation to use
LDAP if there are more than 250 users. This recommendation has nothing to
do with the efficiency of tdbsam, but was made considering the likelihood
that with 250 or more users you may need to use PDC/BDC configuration.
When you need a Samba-BDC it becomes essential that you have the ability
to synchronize the password database - something that becomes very
difficult with tdbsam, but is easily accomplished with an LDAP backend.

On a related note, you guys rock! You are the reason we can do the above
with one server! You have saved us hundreds of thousands of US $'s on
licensing and servers alone! Your technical prowess is appreciated far
 more than you know!

[Samba] Samba 2.2.8a --with-pam Solaris PAM_LDAP

2003-10-17 Thread Baldwin Sung
Hi All,

I was wondering if anybody has had similar issues?

1. Why will the --with-pam option work when only encrypt passwords = no
in the smb.conf file?

2. Is their a way to set encrypt passwords = yes in the smb.conf and
still use the --with-pam option?

I'm running Samba 2.2.8a with the following ./configure...

./configure --prefix=/opt/samba \
--with-configdir=/opt/samba/etc \
--with-privatedir=/opt/samba/etc/private \
--with-lockdir=/opt/samba/var/locks \
--with-piddir=/opt/samba/var/locks \
--with-logfilebase=/opt/samba/var/log \
--without-readline \
--enable-shared=yes \
--enable-static=no \
--with-acl-support \
--without-winbind \
--with-pam
My goal is to have a Windows 2000 Professional workstation login to a
domain based environment to utilize roaming profiles. From what I can
digest, it seems the Windows 2000 Professional only works when encrypt
passwords = yes in the smb.conf file.

When connecting to a Samba server using a Mac OS X client just for
testing purposes, with encrypt passwords = no and --with-pam enabled...
a test user can authenticate against the Samba Server via PAM then
PAM_LDAP with great success :)

In the worst case, I would really appreciate it if you could direct me
to where I could modify any piece of the samba code to allow pam even
with encrypt passwords = yes?

BTW, the Samba team has really made great software!

[Samba] samba 2.2.8a problem with winbind and getent group

2003-09-24 Thread Wild, Phil
Hi samba mailing list.

I am having a major problem with winbind. This is my first implementation
and I have exhausted samba documentation, google and newsgroup searches.
Please help if you can.

I am running samba 2.2.8a under Solaris 8 SPARC.

Source was compiled using gcc with winbind pam builtin-popot and challenge
options.

I am only using samba for the winbind portion at this time.

various smb.conf settings

workgroup = SEALCORP
server string = peruxbu1
security = domain
wins server = 125.1.18.12
dns proxy = no
password server = pernt2 pernt1 pernt5
encrypt passwords = yes
winbind uid = 1-2
winbind gid = 1-2
template homedir = /export/home/%D/%U
template shell = /usr/bin/bash
winbind separator = +
winbind enum groups = no
winbind enum groups = no
winbind cache time = 15
winbind use default domain = yes
name resolve order = hosts lmhosts wins bcast

winbind seems to be running correctly

wbinfo -t
Secret is good

Under NT, all users have a primary group of Domain Users

If I run getent passwd I see what appears to be all the users. A sample
appears below

YeoT:x:10925:1:Trent Yeo:/export/home/SEALCORP/yeot:/usr/bin/bash
YongA:x:10926:1:Amy Yong:/export/home/SEALCORP/yonga:/usr/bin/bash
YorgT:x:10927:1:Tony Yorg:/export/home/SEALCORP/yorgt:/usr/bin/bash
YorkR:x:10928:1:Rowena York:/export/home/SEALCORP/yorkr:/usr/bin/bash
YoungerN:x:10929:1:Neil
Younger:/export/home/SEALCORP/youngern:/usr/bin/bash

A getent group takes forever to return
A getent group | grep Domain returns the following:

Domain Admins:x:10206:removed admin account names from email
Domain Guests:x:10207:Guest

A wbinfo -g | grep Domain returns the following:

Domain Admins
Domain Guests
Domain Users

Anyone know why I would be losing the last group when using getent?

Also, why would a getent group take forever to return (like a minute).

Time wbinfo -g | wc -l
Returns a count of 456 lines and takes .068ms to return

Time getent group | wc -l
Returns a count of 229 lines and takes 1m34.501s to return

I am running winbindd with -I -d4 to see debug information for the above and
all I get from the last command is:

[ 1101]: getpwnam yeot
[ 1605]: setgrent
[ 1605]: getgrent
[ 1605]: endgrent

Cheers

Phil

I can't give you step by step instructions, but as far as I am aware,
the Win2K system is pretty much the same as the NT system.

Make sure you place the policy file in your NetLogon share (or shares if
you have different ones for different users/groups/machines).

The link below may be of some use to you,

http://www.ntfaq.com/Articles/Index.cfm?ArticleID=19725

It lists where you can find lots and lots of Administrative Templates
(.adm files), which will allow you to add many abilities to your policy
file(s), such as setting settings for other office products, Internet
explorer, etc.

Sorry I can't be of any more help at this stage, but I though I would
mention the link simply because I was so happy when I found what I could
do with the admin. Templates it points to.

2003-09-12 Thread Pauli Borodulin
Hello,

I just can't get point'n'print working correctly. Every time I double
click printer, Windows (2k, NT) fails to install the drivers from print$
-share. I'm trying to use a generic postscript driver provided with Cups
(modified MS Postscript driver). Linux distribution in use is Redhat.

I have first set Cups working and printed test page with it - no
problems. Then I added required shares and settings to Samba for
printing. I used smbclient and rpcclient (rpcclient version 3.0.0rc3
because 2.2.x -version is buggy) to manually install the needed driver
files for the printer and tested installation with commands provided in
Samba 3.0 howto - everything seems to be correct. I'm also able to print
from clients if I install local driver by hand.

When I open properties for printer in w2k, Windows reports that Device
settings cannot be displayed. The driver for the specified printer is
not installed. Only spooler properties will be displayed. Do you want to
install the driver now?. I can see the name of the driver in Advanced -tab.

If I open 'Server Properties' from Printers -window, I can see that the
driver has actually been installed. Version is reported to be Windows
NT 4.0 or 2000. I can also see the properties for the driver and it
lists all required files (cups.hlp, cupsui.dll, cupsdrvr.dll and
ppd-file for the printer). I discovered this while trying different
Samba / Cups -combinations.

I get next line quite often when trying with combination Samba 3.0.0rc3
Cups 1.1.19 when trying to access the printer, but I'm not sure how
it's related -- increasing the log level made it disappear if I recall
correctly.

[2003/09/13 03:19:24, 0] lib/util_str.c:safe_strcpy_fn(573)
  ERROR: NULL dest in safe_strcpy
Any ideas, hints, suggestions etc. are welcome. :-)

[Samba] Samba 2.2.8a and sendfile

2003-08-29 Thread Jarmo Jrvenp
Dear all,

I did not find anything related to this problem;

Samba with sendfile support enabled, works fine with W2k but not with
NT4.

Problems with NT4 are constant lockups (which take half a minute for
computer to start responding again) when accessing network drives.

- All our NT4 workstations show this behaviour.
- Disabling sendfile cures this problem.
- W2k workstations are not affected in any case.

Anything to test? Is this a known reason?

Jarmo

Re: [Samba] Samba 2.2.8a file permissions not working

2003-08-14 Thread Errol Neal

Or our two UNIX file servers, one is Solaris 8 and the other RedHat
Linux 7.3. Samba was compiled as follows:
configure --prefix=/opt/samba --with-acl-support --with-quotas

Right now it doesn't looks like changing file/folder permissions are
working from W2K. When we right click on a file/folder and go to the
security tab it show the current file permissions fine. But when you
try to change them it is being ignored. No error messages are being
shown. No matter what we do no changes are happening on the UNIX side.
This occurs on the Linux file server too.
This did work in 2.2.7a and compiled the same way as above.
Is there something different in 2.2.8a, or is this a bug

In order to use '--with-acl-support', your kernel needs to have
acl-support, and that is dependant upon the file system you are running.
Red Hat 9 does not have ACL support in the default kerner NOR do Red Hat's
modified kernels up to 2.4.21, so my guess is your RH 7.3
does not have ACL support either.

Re: [Samba] Samba 2.2.8a file permissions not working

2003-08-14 Thread matt . twigg
Errol,
Just to ad to the mix,
I am running RH 9 with the 2.6 test1 kernel with ACL compiled in.
I can fully manipulate ACLs on ext3 with setfacl.

I thought the RPMS had --with-acl-support turned on...but I could
be wrong.
I did a manual compile of 2.2.8 with all my fav. switches on and
got the same result.

Yes, same thing is happening to me. This looks to be a bug, which has
gotten worse as file permission changing didn't fully work in 2.2.7a.

Re: [Samba] Samba 2.2.8a file permissions not working

2003-08-08 Thread CJ Keist
The ACL is not the issue here, but being able to change the basic
user, group.other permissions on files/folders. Right now 2.2.8a seems
to ignore any permission changes you make from W2K. In playing around
some more I find that it will remove permissions, but you cannot add
permissions.

RE: [Samba] Samba 2.2.8a/winbindd - 2K Domain users passwordchallenged

2003-07-17 Thread Stewart, Eric
I know it's been less than a day but I'm kind of surprised that I
haven't gotten an answer on this one way or the other ... so let me ask a
simpler question:

Are winbind served users of a Linux machine supposed to have access
to the samba shares served by that Linux machine? If so, please provide
sample smb.conf's (if they differ from mine below) and pam.d/* files. As
my users only need access to the samba shares, and not login access, I'm
hesitant to change any /etc/pam.d/ file aside from /etc/pam.d/samba ...

A bit of further testing has shown that at the very least, samba
continues to attempt to look for user instead of DOM+user when trying
to validate. Please! This is the last step I *must* get past before I
can move mission critical services from a Sun Solaris 8 box to this Redhat
Linux 9 machine ...

I have a RedHat Linux 9 server that I would like to
allow users in my Windows 2000 domain to be able to map
shares from without actually having an account on the system.
Compiled samba, configured with ./configure --with-pam.
Got the server into the domain, and regular security =
domain seems to be working appropriately - providing there's
a local account with the same username as the 2K Domain user.
winbind appears to be providing the accounts
appropriately - both wbinfo and getent return what you'd
expect them to; a wbinfo -a with a user on the domain (the
one trying to connect, in fact) gets:

 plaintext password authentication succeeded

It simply appears as if, when a user attempts to
connect to the share, it fails to try to match the W2K
account (IE, DOM\user) to the winbind account (DOM+user) and
near as I can tell, fails since there isn't an account on the
 system under user.

returning the string name for the appropriate numerical uid. So, since I was headed
out to lunch, I went ahead and rebooted the server.

Lo and behold it all appears to work now. Correctly even.

I'm guessing that changes to /etc/nsswitch.conf may not necessarily register
immediately and that's where I was running into trouble. That or something to do with
files moving into place (like /lib/libnss_winbind.so) and not being seen.
Now if I could only be sure of what service it was that need restarting ...

I know it's been less than a day but I'm kind of
 surprised that I
haven't gotten an answer on this one way or the other ... so
 let me ask a
 simpler question:

Are winbind served users of a Linux machine supposed to
 have access
to the samba shares served by that Linux machine? If so,
 please provide
sample smb.conf's (if they differ from mine below) and
 pam.d/* files. As
my users only need access to the samba shares, and not login
 access, I'm
hesitant to change any /etc/pam.d/ file aside from
 /etc/pam.d/samba ...

A bit of further testing has shown that at the very least, samba
continues to attempt to look for user instead of DOM+user

Hora! I got it working! Although with one bug which I will list at the
bottom of this email.

I am posting how I fixed this for everyone in the future who runs into this problem.

First I recompiled OpenLDAP with the --include-debug option (It won't log jack unless
you do!) And set up slapd.conf to loglevel = -1.
It's also a good idea to configure syslog to dump this to it's own file because it
uses /var/log/messages by default.

Second I started Samba and Slapd up and tried to join my new domain from a Windows XP
laptop.

Here's the (pertinent) output from my slapd.log sorry it's so long.
I'll continue at the bottom..

one thing I found is that if I dont have the master browser setup correctly
(domain logons = yes master browser = yes), then I get that message as well.

[Samba] Samba 2.2.8a w/ LDAP enabled RPMs

2003-07-09 Thread Dan Kador
Hi All,

I was wondering if anybody could point me in the direction of an RPM for Redhat 7.3 of
a build of Samba 2.2.8a with LDAP enabled? I can't seem to get the RPM compiled from
either raw source or from an SRPM for the life of me - I keep getting errors that read:

checking configure summary... configure: error: summary failure. Aborting config
error: Bad exit status from /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.129 (%build)

RPM Build errors:
Bad exit status from /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.129 (%build)

I'm nowhere near knowledgeable enough about building binaries to be able to solve this
problem on my own. If anybody has any tips to fix my errors, or if anybody can point
me to a downloadable RPM, I'd be very happy.

Thanks!
Dan

[Samba] Samba 2.2.8a PDC + OpenLDAP + W2k Terminalserver

2003-06-29 Thread Daniel Bramkamp
Hi list,

I am experiecing some problems with a Samba setup acting as a PDC for a
customers network. I am not sure if this is actually a Samba/LDAP issue or if
Windows is to blame here. I did a search on Google but I couldn't find anything
answers.

However, the problems I am experiencing are kind of weird. I joined all the
Windows clients (NT4/W2K) and a Windows 2K terminalserver to the Samba
controlled domain without problems. I created logon scripts and they get
executed just fine on the NT4 clients but not when I logon a user to a
terminalsession. The terminalserver executes the logon script, but complains
about not being able to map the network drivers because the share name could
not be found. When I execute the script after the logon it works just fine. The
other thing is with profiles. I am _not_ using roaming profiles, the profiles
are stored localy on the clients and the w2k terminalserver. When I login user
X in a terminalsession I get the profile of user Y and when I am about to log
the user out it says logout user Z. When I tested the setup everything worked
fine, including the netlogon scripts and the profiles. However, at my customers
site this weird stuff happens. I also set the MAXCONNECTION define to 768 in
smbd.c for the terminalserver. Can anyone gimme a hint where to search for the
error ?

Thanks in advance.

[Samba] Samba 2.2.8a and DOS .bat script

2003-06-25 Thread Fiorenza Meini
Hi there!

I'm experiencing a problem while executing DOS .bat scripts that have a
directory name whose lenght is greater than 8 characters.

Please see below an example:

usr/mara/COPIA DI FATTUREVIAINTERNET/OK/SFE.BAT

I receive access denied error.

If I execute the same .bat script from another path, which hasn't directory
name longer than 8 characters, it runs without problem.

Any suggestion?

Thanks

Fiorenza

[Samba] samba-2.2.8a libsmbclient install

2003-06-21 Thread Michael Somos
Samba project,
I recently downloaded samba-2.2.8a.tar.bz2 and tried to install it
--with-libsmbclient but it failed in the install for one file :

Installing libsmbclient as /home/somos/u/samba/bin/libsmbclient
cp: cannot stat `libsmbclient': No such file or directory
chmod: getting attributes of `/home/somos/u/samba/bin/libsmbclient': No such fil

The reason is a slight oversight. IN the Makefile you have :

PROGS2 = bin/smbpasswd bin/make_smbcodepage bin/rpcclient bin/make_unicodemap bi
n/smbcacls bin/smbsh bin/smbwrapper.solibsmbclient

but the last part should be 'bin/libsmbclient' instead I think.
However, that is still not enough. I now get :

make: *** No rule to make target `/bin/libsmbclient', needed by `all'. Stop.

So I don't know how it is supposed to work. Shalom, Michael

[Samba] samba 2.2.8a - winbindd and domain-USER/GROUPS

2003-06-18 Thread boris blaha
hi

suse8.2
samba-latest --with-acl-support --with-pam
configured as domain member

samba and winbindd works fine
getent passwd -- all users from the PDC
getent group -- all groups
chown TESTFIRMA+dummy -on FS - also works fine
authentifikation against PDC also works fine

the situation:
- w2k client connects to samba-share (all fine)
- in w2k explorer - marks a file and want to
change the permissions to other PDC-USERS

now i expected to see the complete PDC USER/Group list,
as i saw it with wbinfo -u
but i get only a small list and the following error in log.smbd

[2003/06/18 14:23:44, 0] rpc_server/srv_samr_nt.c:load_sampwd_entries(162)
  load_sampwd_entries: Unable to open passdb.

what´s wrong here
any idea ?

thx a lot in advance

[Samba] Samba 2.2.8a + LDAP: smbstatus -b does not show username

2003-06-16 Thread Oliver Schulze L.
Hi,
I'm running Samba 2.2.8a in RH9 with a LDAP DB for my Linux
users(passwd, shadow, etc).
Samba uses the smbpasswd file normally. The samba server is running as a
PDC.
The clients are Windoes 98SE machines.

When I run the command: 'smbstatus -b', some usernames appears as the user
'nobody' instead of the real username.
Some rows in the the smbstatus output display the username and some rows
display the username nobody.
Is there a problem in my installation?

Many thanks

[Samba] samba 2.2.8a SWAT enhanced

2003-06-12 Thread peter demus
Hallo !

If You are using SWAT and you using the Advanced View mode the list of
parameters is very long and it's not handy to find anything.

Also You can't do everything on the Password page-Seite nicht, what You
would do with the console command smbpasswd.

And a nice list of all smbpasswd accounts is not available on SWAT.

So, I've tried to enhance this.

See details, download files and screen shots here:

http://demus.de/download/samba-patch/v228a/

2 C files are changed. You have to re-compile the smb
2.2.8a packages with make install !

Tested on 4 different Linux (rh 7.3 suse 7.0 suse 7.3 suse 8.1) hosts.
smbpasswd list is NOT working with LDAP by now !

Please send any comments

ciao peter

AW: [Samba] Samba 2.2.8a :: High CPU usage and Printer

2003-06-03 Thread Lars Kirchhoff
hello jeremy,

thank you very much for your help.

after using strace i found the problem. The trace was very huge and
I found a lot of entries like this:

  open(/tmp/SMBtrans2.14.resp, O_WRONLY|O_CREAT|O_EXCL|O_LARGEFILE,
0644) = -1 EEXIST (File exists)

I found loads of these files in the /tmp directory.

This pointed me back to the smb.conf and I simply removed the
debug level 100 line in smb.conf and the problem was solved ;)

ciao Lars

Did anybody experience the same problem?

Ok, does the problem happen with the printer share removed ?
If so, can you try an strace/truss over an offending smbd
process and mail it to the list ?

 Thanks,

AW: [Samba] Samba 2.2.8a :: High CPU usage and Printer

2003-05-31 Thread Lars Kirchhoff
No, I don't.. I'm sorry I wasn't that clear in my last mail.

I'm running Samba only as file server. I haven't installed a
printer so far on Samba. The printers are installed on the
Windows 2000 server.

This server is a Domaincontroller, File- and Printerserver.
My problem is that any other pc has normal traffic rates
to the samba server, but the server is very slow.

One statement in the list was that this might be a printer
port monitor issue. I don't know what is meant by that and
I would like to know what else could be the reason, why the
windows 2000 server is that slow while accessing the samba
server.

regards
Lars

 Are you using CUPS?

Subject: [Samba] Samba 2.2.8a :: High CPU usage and Printer

 hello,

several days ago, I posted a message about high cpu usage of smbd.
I am accessing the samba server with a windows 2000
server. One answer was that this could be an printer issue.

So but so far I don't know what i can do, because deinstalling
the printer doesn't solve my problem. I would like to have a
detailed description why the printer might cause this problem
of a high cpu usage on the samba server to track down this
 problem.

Did anybody experience the same problem?

 Any help is highly appreciated..

 best regards
 Lars

Ok, does the problem happen with the printer share removed ?
If so, can you try an strace/truss over an offending smbd
process and mail it to the list ?

Thanks,

Jeremy.

[Samba] Samba 2.2.8a Install

2003-05-29 Thread Kevin Smith
I just downloaded and installed the above tar ball, all went fine, all runs,
hits no errors (./configure, make, make install bin, make install_man).
When it finished, it typed, service smb stop, service smb restart, then
smbclient -L firewall, which still reported 2.2.7a.
So I tried it another way, /etc/rc.d/init.d/smbd stop/start...Smbclient -L
firewall yielded the same version number, ditto after a reboot.
As far as I can tell, the install was fine, but I still can't seem to get
proof that the new version is running. Now the old version is fine, and I
don't really want to make revert and take a chance of messing that up (I
know, but I'm cautious).
Any clue how to get the new version to come up?

Re: [Samba] Samba 2.2.8a Install

2003-05-29 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
New version is in /usr/local/samba/...
smbd is in /usr/local/samba/bin/

Your startup scripts are probably still refering to a smbd in a different location.

[Samba] Samba 2.2.8a :: High CPU usage

The problem is that the performance of the samba installation is

up to 98%. That seemed strange to me and I have no clue what I can

I already searched through the maillinglist archives, but didn't

Do you have a client with a printer port monitor pointing at
 this system ?

 Jeremy.

Jeremy, I have a similar problem, but it also leaks lots of memory.
see http://lists.samba.org/pipermail/samba/2003-May/096336.html for details.

Not sure what you mean with printer port monitor, but there are clients that
have a local driver and prints directly to the network attached printers. The clients
that are causing the problem are using samba to print to the same printers.
