As I'm in the market for one, it's really great to hear about a new and
good quality printer/scanner which is working with Linux.  I still have
a few questions about it though, if people would be so kind as to give
information about the Canon Color imageCLASS MF644Cdw:

Does scanning also work from the flatbed (platen) and via the manual
feed slot (aka Stack Bypass)?

According to
https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/support/details/printers/color-laser/color-imageclass-mf644cdw/?tab=richtexteditortab_5417439e-0c5b-4a4c-8b4f-54ba103c6eba,
the scan resolutions for this unit are 300 x 600 and 600 x 600 dpi.  It
would, of course, be really nice to achieve higher resolutions.  Are the
Canon-stated resolutions perhaps limited by their own Windows and Mac
software?

Can copying be done with this machine without a PC being connected to it?

What document formats are available for scanner output (on Linux of course)?

Finally (and sorry for the slight OTness), do all the printing functions
of this model work for Linux?  (Neither the Linux Foundation
OpenPrinting.org site nor tldp.org list it.)

Thanks much for your help.

Cost of development will depend to a huge degree on the contracted
developer's permitted access to relevant information.  For instance, if
the developer is given no access at all to the "inner workings" of the
hardware and firmware and existing relevant software, and so must at
every turn guess and reverse-engineer the code, his efforts, and so then
too the costs of development, will be considerable.  At the other
extreme end of the possible range of developer access would be complete
access, access to all code and documentation on hardware, firmware, and
existing drivers and applications already written for other OSs
(typically for Windows and Macs).  With such complete access, the
developer's required time and effort is reduced considerably, and so
then too naturally the cost.  With this degree of access, the quality of
code and documentation will also play a role in cost.  (Of course with
any access to proprietary information a non-disclosure agreement would
be expected and other, less formalistic indications of trustworthiness
are desired.)  To derive even a very rough estimate of development,
these factors should be discussed.

As a longtime and dedicated Linux user, I, and I'm sure others, welcome
the news that Xerox is interested in providing Linux functionality in
its products.  We hope that Linux support won't be restricted to just
that one large enterprise account, but will be made available to all
Xerox customers.

[sane-devel] Printer/Scanner recommendations

2019-03-15 Thread ken
In under four years my HP all-in-one printer/scanner died, so I'm
looking for a replacement, one which is more reliable and will last
longer. According to Consumer Reports, that probably means going with a
B/W laser printer & scanner combo. But I also need good Linux support,
i.e., the scanner must handle color and also should have Linux support
for DADF (Duplex=both sides of the page; ADF=automatic document
feeder=put a stack of 20 or more pages on it and the scanner processes
them all automatically). Also scanner glass for single-page scanning.
Scanning software should be able to specify page sizes from 4x6 inches
to legal size, 8x14 inches. I don't need fax anymore. Anyone know of a
good quality machine with all that Linux support?
