*Description of Position:*

This position is part of the Research Informatics Application Support Team
and is specifically focused on supporting the Unix and Linux environments
and associated applications used in research.



*The position encompasses the following responsibilities:*

·         Supporting users of the applications by ensuring updates are
performed, solving functional problems with the applications in a timely
matter, and heeding the priorities of the user community..

·         Installing applications according to established standards and
processes to enable execution on IRIX servers and workstations; and Linux
servers, server farms, and desktops.

·         Analyzing and troubleshooting problems encountered by
computational chemists and the scientific library staff related to vendor
and custom software applications in the Unix/Linux environment.

·         Coordinating with the Unix/Linux Infrastructure and Moab
specialists to ensure successful completion of application evaluation
projects and application upgrades

·         Coordinating with application development teams to gather
requirements and recommend the optimal configuration for application servers
and storage.

·         Creating realistic testing scenarios and scripts to use before and
after equipment and software version upgrades

·         Following required procedures to coordinate with IT on
installations, upgrades and purchases.

·         Participating in the creation of system and support documentation
for supported applications and applicable support processes

·         Maintaining all required license, application and infrastructure
documentation and records.



*Job Requirements:*

·         5 to 10 years as an administrator of applications in a Unix/Linux
environment

·         2 to 3 years experience in a customer/application support role in
a research, academic,     or engineering environment

·         Working knowledge of Shell, Perl, VI, emacs, csh, gtk, gnome, kde

·         Excellent communications and customer service skills

·         Proven problem solving/troubleshooting skills

·         Demonstrated understanding of the principles and technologies
associated with installation, maintenance, and integration of servers and
applications in an enterprise environment.

·         Ability to work independently and with little supervision

*POSITION DESCRIPTION *

This position is part of the IT Research Informatics Application Support
Team and is specifically focused on supporting the scientific applications
and associated databases required by the Translational Medicine platform in
the Research department.



·         Supporting users of assigned applications and databases by
ensuring updates are performed, solving functional problems with the
applications in a timely matter, and heeding the priorities of the user
community.

·         Installing applications according to established standards and
processes to enable execution on Linux servers, Linux workstations, PCs and
Macs

·         Analyzing and troubleshooting problems encountered by researchers
using vendor and custom software applications and related databases

·         Maintaining, updating and troubleshooting issues with flat file
and SQL protein, sequence and small molecule databases; supporting
researchers in the creation of such custom databases

·         Coordinating with vendors, the user community and internal
technical resources to ensure successful completion of application
evaluation projects and application upgrades

·         Coordinating with application development teams to gather
requirements and recommend the optimal configuration for application servers
and storage.

·         Creating realistic testing scenarios and scripts to use before and
after equipment and software version upgrades

·         Following required group and department procedures for
installations, upgrades and purchases.

·         Participating in the creation of system and support documentation
for supported applications and applicable support processes

·         Maintaining all required license, application and infrastructure
documentation and records





*EXPERIENCE*

·         All of the below are stated as minimum requirements.

·         3 to 5 years as an administrator of applications in a Unix/Linux
environment with strong troubleshooting skills.

·         2 to 3 years experience in a customer/application support role in
a biotech/pharmaceutical or academic research environment with a mix of
Windows, Mac OSX, Linux Workstations, NetApp, Citrix platforms and
applications such as GCG.JEMBOSS, BLAST, Vector NTI, GCK or the equivalent

·         3 years experience maintaining, updating and performing QC checks
on DNA and protein sequence databases

·         3 years experience in shell scripting (tcsh and bash). Perl
scripting skills are a plus.
