[sr #110880] Disable cgit tag snapshots for GNU poke

2023-05-14 Thread Jose E. Marchesi
Follow-up Comment #1, sr #110880 (project administration):

We noticed there is is this setting that can be configured on the server side
for the git repo:

repo.snapshot-prefix
Prefix to use for snapshot links instead
of the repository basename. For example, the
"linux-stable" repository may wish to set
this to "linux" so that snapshots are in the
format "linux-3.15.4" instead of
"linux-stable-3.15.4".

If that works, it could be set to "git-poke" or similar, instead of removing
the snapshots altogether.

Thanks!

Hello savannah hackers!

Would it be possible to disable the "git snapshots" feature in cgit for GNU
poke?

We don't use these tarballs, and due to our already established tag naming the
resulting tarballs have the same name than the official release tarballs in
ftp.gnu.org. This is confusing.

Thanks!

Hello savannah hackers!

I just tried to create a new mailing list 40ye...@gnu.org in the GNU Hackers
Meetings project. It is to organize the celebrations of the 40th anniversary
of the project.

It didn't seem to work.
Maybe it is because the name starts with a digit?

TIA!

The method looks good to me.
Except this point:

- savannah: status=orphaned; note in summary.

That only makes sense for packages that 1) have functional source code
and 2) have been decomissioned due to lack of maintenance. IMO we
should not be looking for maintainers otherwise. ("orphaned" implies are
looking for someone to take care of them.)

Then, if RMS agrees, I would suggest to move these projects to old-gnu/
(for archiving purposes) and then close the corresponding savannah
projects.

`pdf' can be decomissioned right now.

success?

Agreed, that seems to be a good way to archive.

Decomissioning vaporware/obsolete/inactive GNU projects

2021-04-07 Thread Jose E. Marchesi

Hi people.

I think we have way too many obsolete/inactive/vaporware programs in
GNU, and that doesn't help to improve the external perception of the GNU
project.

It is also distracting and makes it difficult to get a clear overall
picture of the project.

The maintainers coordinators look for these things from time to time,
sporadically, for particular cases. But I suggest to go thru the
complete list of GNU programs and make a list of these that we probably
want to decomission/archive.

A first pass would identify candidates for decommission/removal, using
this criteria:

- Projects older than a year, but without any source code.
- Projects with code, but that have not been updated in 10 years.
- ... other criteria?

Then the maintainers for such marked projects would be contacted. If
they don't reply in, say, a couple of months, the project is marked to
be decomissioned/archived.

A second pass will then actually decomission/archive the projects.

Decomissioning/archiving a program would involve to:

1) Backup VCS, web VCS, mailing lists and download areas.
2) Remove the savannah group.
3) Remove (comment-out) the program from `maintainers'.
4) Remove the program's website from www.gnu.org
5) ... more?

Opinions?

About savannah, KLog and KMeter

2021-04-06 Thread Jose E. Marchesi

Hello Jaime.

Thanks for your patience.

So we have carefully looked at the issue. What happened, in a nutshell:

1) The KLog project has indeed been hosted in savannah.nongnu.org for
many years. The group was registered in 2002, and you imported the
sources in a SVN repository in 2011.

2) In 30 April 2020 you submitted an application for another project, to
be hosted in savannah.nongnu.org: KMeter. During the evaluation of
the submission the savannah hackers found some problems that violate
the savannah hosting requirements, and they reached out to you in
   this savannah task ticket:

Savannah Administration - Tasks: task #15622, Submission of KMeter
   https://savannah.nongnu.org/task/?15622

As you can see in task #15622 they tried to get in touch with you in
   three occassions:

   - Fri 08 May 2020
   - Sun 31 May 2020
   - Mon 15 Mar 2021

With no answer from you. You are supposed to get email notifications
from Savannah when somebody replies to you in a forum, so maybe you
want to check your savannah settings? Maybe you have an email
address there that you no longer use?

In any case, in these messages the savannah hackers told you that
they had also found similar problems in the existing project KLog,
not just in the submission of KMeter:

"Please be sure to fix these issues in this package and in other

  your packages hosted in Savannah."

And then almost a year later after no response:

"No further interest? Should I cancel this submission and delete
 your package from Savannah?"

We reckon we should have been more explicit in that communication in
that we were talking about removing the KLog project. We apologize
   for that.

3) We proceeded to discard the KMeter application and to remove the KLog
project from savannah, due to these policy violation _and_ because
the maintainer/submitter appeared to be missing in action for the
   good part of a year.

Good news is that we finally managed to reach you! :)
So, what can we do now?

- Regarding KLog, the group has been removed from savannah. However, we
have backups of the VCS, download area and the mailing list archives.
If you are still interested in hosting the KLog project in savannah,
we invite you to start a new submission. The savannah hackers will
then evaluate it and guide you in fixing any problem that makes it not
compatible with the savannah policies. Once approved and a new group
gets created, we can then restore the VCS, download areas and the
  mailing list archives.

- Regarding KMeter, the application has been closed due to lack of
response. So if you are still interested in hosting it in savannah,
please start a new submission and work with the savannah hackers to
make it compatible with the savannah hosting requirements.

Again, we apologize for any inconvenience, and we look forward to work
with you :)

Salud!

Hello savannah hackers!

We need an additional git repo created for recutils: rec-mode.git

We will move the Emacs lisp support files from recutils.git to this new repo,
so it can be used with ELPA.

Thanks, and stay well! :)

However, its been more than a week since the transition, and sending email to

something went wrong there.

Hi ineiev.

As far as I can see we would need:

1. Savannah to open an account in github.com and gitlab.com, registering a
public ssh key in both sites.
2. I will give savannah write access to the poke repos there.
3. You install post-receive hooks that will git push --mirror to the github
and gitlab repos.

Hello people!

I would need to add a post-receive hook to the poke.git repository, to mirror
commits in github.com/jemarch/poke.

I think something like this should do the trick:
git push --mirror https://github.com/jemarch/poke.git

AFAIK coreutils has a similar setup.
I suppose I should add commit permission for some github user. Please let me
know.

Thanks!

Re: [savannah-help-public] Replicant source code hosting

2015-06-15 Thread Jose E. Marchesi

Nacho: what about chapters? See below.

about 50 GiB and this will keep on increasing, but will certainly remain
under, say, 100 GiB.

There is only 36gb available on the relevant Savannah partition right
now (and 112gb used). I don't know how much disk space is available on
the underlying hardware or if FSF sysadmins have time to look into
resizzing. (They are the only ones who have to do all such things.)

I cannot stress enough our need for hosting the Replicant source code
fast.

Perhaps chapters.gnu.org (Jose?) or puszcza.gnu.org.ua (Sergey?)
has enough disk space right now to get you going again right away. See
http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/savannah-hackers/2015-06/msg00017.html
for Paul's full message.

[Savannah-help-public] Mailing list names in nongnu projects

2011-11-06 Thread Jose E. Marchesi

Hi hackers.

Sometimes a nongnu package is created with the goal of being dubbed
part of GNU in the future. In that case it is good to keep the GNU standards
from the beginning. Currently it is not possible to have mailing lists
in nongnu projects with the standard names bug-...@gnu.org and
help-...@gnu.org. Could this be fixed?

Thanks!

in nongnu projects with the standard names bug-...@gnu.org and
help-...@gnu.org. Could this be fixed?

This doesn't make sense to me. The time that @gnu.org addresses should
be used is when it's a GNU package, not before. For the same reason
that we don't mark the package as official GNU software until it
really is.

Sorry, I meant bug-...@nongnu.org and help-...@nongnu.org. It is
currently not possible to use them, since the web interface forces you
to use foo-whate...@nongnu.org.

Re: [Savannah-help-public] Savannah Subscriptions

There are no more Savannah subscriptions on planet.gnu.org?

We are downloading a csv file from

the file is now being generated empty, and thus we are not adding any

Please find below the script used in chapters.gnu.org to extract the

[Savannah-help-public] Default software project perms allows anonymous patches

2007-06-28 Thread Jose E. Marchesi

Hi hackers.

It seems the default permissions for Official GNU software and
non-GNU software documentation allows anonymous to insert patches
into the Patch tracking facility.

That doesnt seems to be a good idea. We cannot incorporate anonymous
significant patches to our packages. I think would be a good idea to
set the default to registered users.

Thanks.

Hi,

There's a difference between anonymous and non-registered :)

True.

Should we prevent people from posting a signed patch if they don't
have a Savannah account and can't be bothered creating one?

What about to incorporate a mandatory distribution terms and author
information field for non-registered users, plus some information
like in order to incorporate your patch to official GNU software we
need you to make explicit both author and distribution terms..

This may be useful for non-gnu software too.

What do you think?

Details:

Hi hackers.

Yesterday I created a mailing list for the addressbook project in
sv.nongnu.org: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

According to savannah, the mailing list exists, but the mailman in nongnu
doesnt know about it. Suspecting some deferred batch job I waited for more
than a day, but it appears the mailing list has not been created.

Thanks in advance.

Hi hackers.

There seems to be a problem on the job post edition form (Edit a job for your
project): there is not a submit button, nor any other facility to actually
post the new data (to press enter while the focus is is an entry do not
work).

Am i missing something? :)
