The Knight Rider movie was horrible and I wasn't a big fan of the
original dso I'll pass. I'd rather see something like Fox's Drive get

Of the stuff memtioned only Fringe, My Own Worst Enemy and Kings

I guess I'm a heathen but I didn't like the original Life On Mars.

The success of Heroes and Lost has spawned a new generation of
SFF TV shows for fall 2008, coming to a flat-screen near you.

What's different for 2008 is the wide variety of shows: From high-
tech cars to
time-traveling cops to mystical romances, this year has a little
something for
everyone. Which will be the breakout hits and which will be but
distant
memories come next fall, when a new bunch of shows will arrive to
replace them?

As a service to you, the busy and possibly overwhelmed viewer, SCI
FI Wire
offers its predictions for the hits and misses of the fall 2008
season, in
descending order, based on early buzz and the pilots we've seen so
far. You can
 take these to the bank.

Fringe. Fox. Premieres Sept. 9. Airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m.

From J.J. Abrams and his Star Trek writing team of Alex Kurtzman and
Roberto Orci, Fringe centers on FBI special agent Olivia Dunham
(Anna Torv),
who finds herself drawn into an investigation of a mysterious
aircraft disaster
in Boston. We love this show. Odds of success: 2 to 1

Knight Rider. NBC. Premieres Sept. 24. Airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m.

Last spring, NBC aired a TV movie/backdoor pilot to revive the
franchise that
made David Hasselhoff a star. The network is following up with a
full-fledged
series about the iconic car known as K.I.T.T. and the humans who
run him.
Equipped with state-of-the art technology, artificial intelligence
and the
voice of Val Kilmer, K.I.T.T. is partnered with Justin Bruening as
Mike Tracer,
the estranged son of Hasselhoff's Michael Knight, who continues his
father's
legacy by fighting bad guys on the open road. The movie did well
enough, so
there may be an audience for this show. The new show runner, Las

Gary Scott Thompson, has revamped the series to amp up the action,
and he's
added a bunch of new characters. Plus, this is a title with some
history--but

 of success: 5 to 1

Life on Mars. ABC. Premieres Oct. 9. Airs Thursdays at 10 p.m.

The bar was set pretty high for this remake of the hit BBC show,
about a
modern-day cop who finds himself thrown back to 1973, and ABC
failed to meet it
with a dismal David E. Kelley-produced pilot. Not to be deterred,
the network
scrapped that effort and brought on producers Josh Appelbaum and
Andre Nemec (October
Road) to completely retool the show. It's too early to tell for
sure if the
cast changes and move from L.A. to New York will make a difference,
but at
least the new show runners seem to have a handle on what made the
British show
good. O'Mara still has a long way to go to fill John Simm's Cuban
heels, but The

Smart cheats death, leads U.S. to saber silver
By Gelu Sulugiuc

BEIJING (Reuters) - Keeth Smart beat back a rare blood disease that nearly
killed him four months ago then inspired the U.S. men’s saber team to an
unexpected silver medal at the Olympics on Sunday.
“This year has been one of the hardest years of my life as well as one of the
greatest years of my life,” he said after leading the United States to two
thrilling comeback victories on their way to the final, which they lost 45-37
to France.
It was the first American men’s fencing medal at the Olympics since 1984.
“I’ve been on a rollercoaster,” Smart said. “I’ll probably take a deep breath
and it will all hit me. I’m still on an emotional high.”

In April, doctors told Smart he had a low platelet count and could die of
severe internal bleeding within two days. Just as he started to get better
after two weeks in intensive care, his mother died of cancer.
Having missed months of competition and training, the lanky left-hander from
Brooklyn showed up in Beijing still thinking about the Athens Olympics, where
he lost bronze medal matches by one point in both the individual and team saber
events.
Faced with that situation two more times on Sunday, he came out on the winning
end.
Smart took the U.S. back from a four-point deficit to a 45-44 victory over
world champions Hungary in the quarterfinals. Then did one better by dominating
world champion Stanislav Pozdnyakov and erasing a five-point deficit in the
semi-finals against Russia to eke out another 45-44 win.
“Pozdnyakov is one of the greatest fencers of all time,” Smart said. “I was
really fortunate today to stick with the game plan that we developed. Nobody
expected us to, but we showed that we can work and do really well.”
Smart outclassed the French fencers in the final as well, but received less
support from his team mates and had to settle for silver before retiring to
begin business school at Columbia University.

He ended up as an Airborne Ranger and did 3 tours in Vietnam.

As for swimming, my other friend was the only dark face on the team, and I used

F. Gary Gray To Direct Julius

Modern retelling of Julius Caesar story

Source: Variety

Another day, another movie based on a graphic novel.

This time, it’s the turn of Oni Press’ Julius, a modern retelling of
Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, in which a London gangster is lauded by the
public while his generals plot against him.

F. Gary Gray - a solid genre filmmaker who has registered with films like
The Italian Job and The Negotiator - will make this his first film since
the 2005 misfire, Be Cool. Mandalay Pictures will sign the big cheques.

We’re not familiar with the comic book - written by Antony Johnston and
drawn by Brett Weldele - but this sounds like it has potential. Caesar’s
story is a classic one and we can easily see how it could be transplanted
to the modern era. And, while we love comic book movies, it’s always nice
to see one that doesn’t revolve around capes and spandex.

What are your thoughts, readers?

Del Toro Offered Watchmen

http://au.movies.ign.com/articles/899/899973p1.html spilling some details
on The Hobbit in an interview with IGN AU earlier this evening, acclaimed
Mexican director Guillermo del Toro delivered his musings on Zack Snyder's
filmic adaptation of Watchmen - an anticipated adaptation of Alan Moore's
graphic novel opus of the same name.

Interestingly, it turns out that del Toro was originally offered the job of
directing the film, but turned it down.

You know, at one point or another, Larry Gordon and Lloyd Levin asked me if
I wanted to do The Watchmen and I just couldn't get my head around The
Watchmen being two or three hours long. I always thought that the series
depended on almost-miniseries build-up.

del Toro did go on to praise the trailer's faithful recreation of the work,
however. I think Zack Snyder is a brilliant visual creator and everything
in the trailer seems right - if not completely dead-on. To be absolutely
honest, I even got a little bit of a geekgasm.

There you have it - del Toro dropped two bombs there; one, he was green-lit
to helm Watchmen at one time, and two, he actually used the term 'geekgasm'
in a sentence.

Raimi's rumored Ryan revealed.

by Jim Vejvoda http://movies.ign.com/email.html

August 18, 2008 - Last week
http://movies.ign.com/articles/898/898884p1.html a rumor surfaced claiming
that filmmaker Sam Raimi, despite earlier reports of being attached to
produce http://movies.ign.com/articles/860/860654p1.html a reboot of the
Jack Ryan franchise, had not yet sealed a deal with Paramount for it and
that the entire project might be headed back to square one. A new report
today suggests why Raimi might be ready to walk away from the project
altogether.

According to
http://chud.com/articles/articles/15998/1/IS-JACK-RYAN-ON-THE-PINEAPPLE-EXP
RESS/Page1.html CHUD, Raimi wants his Spider-Man actor James Franco,
currently seen on-screen as Seth Rogen's buddy-pot dealer in Pineapple
Express, to play CIA analyst Jack Ryan. Ryan was previously played by Alec
Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck.

The site claims that Raimi and Paramount are at odds over his casting
choice, with the studio reportedly wanting an actor with a more proven box
office track record. CHUD states that Raimi is ready to part ways with
Paramount and the Jack Ryan franchise over the alleged brouhaha.

Franco's credits include Annapolis, Flyboys, and the title role in James

George Lucas wants Mace Windu in the director's chair.

August 19, 2008 - During an exclusive one-on-one interview today with

L. Jackson, the actor spoke with IGN Movies about the possibility that he
might re-team with Star Wars creator George Lucas for the latter's World War
II production Red Tails.

Lucas has long been developing Red Tails, which chronicles the exploits of
the African-American war heroes known as the Tuskegee Airmen. John Ridley
penned the most recent draft of the screenplay. Given his box office stature
and past history of working with Lucas on the Star Wars prequels and the
recently released http://movies.ign.com/objects/142/14235189.html Star
Wars: The Clone Wars animated feature, we asked Jackson if Lucas had spoken
to him about being in the picture. It turns out that he has, and that the
Bearded One sees Jackson playing a much larger role in the project than just
as an actor.

I just read it like two weeks ago. It's a pretty good script, Jackson
began. At one point (Lucas) was asking me if I'd ever want to direct
anything. I said, 'I don't know, man. I'm trying to find things.' He said,
'Well, let me send you this thing. Maybe you might want to direct it.'

Jackson continued, Well, I guess if I was gonna direct something George
would be a great guy to kind of mentor me through that, especially a big ass
special effects flying picture. The script's good. I like it.

But when pressed if he would seriously consider helming Red Tails, Jackson
replied, I don't know. I don't have a year and a half of my life where I
wanna stop acting.

Actor in talks to adapt comic with Sam Raimi.

by Todd Gilchrist http://movies.ign.com/email.html

http://movies.ign.com/articles/900/900130p1.html

August 19, 2008 - On Tuesday, August 19, 2008, The Hollywood Reporter
announced that Tom Cruise is setting up an adaptation of the DC Comics
property Sleeper at Warner Brothers. Although Cruise currently co-owns
United Artists, he is not obligated to generate products for the company,
and is discussing the forthcoming comic book adaptation as a collaboration
with director Sam Raimi (Spider-Man).

According to THR, Cruise is interested in developing the film project even
if he elects not to participate in it himself as a star. His potential
partner Raimi (as well as Raimi's partner Josh Donen) have kept an eye on
the property for some time and would like to develop it into a film.

At the same time, the expectation is that Sleeper will not only be a future
franchise for Warner Brothers, but a starring vehicle for Cruise, who would
presumably play the main character, a mortal who fuses with an alien
artifact and becomes impervious to pain.

Century Fox sued Warner Bros. in February over the latter's right to make
and distribute the Watchmen movie, which had a long development history in
Hollywood including a spell at Fox. On Friday, a federal judge reportedly
refused to dismiss Fox's suit as requested in a motion filed by Warners.
What does this mean exactly for the highly anticipated film adaptation of
the Alan Moore-Dave Gibbons graphic novel, which is one of Warners' biggest
2009 releases?

As a Fox source for
http://www.deadlinehollywooddaily.com/urgent-warners-watchmen-in-legal-peri

conclude that Fox retained distribution rights in Watchmen through the 1991
Largo quit claim, and he concludes that, under the 1994 turnaround, producer
Larry Gordon acquired an option to acquire Fox's remaining interest in
Watchmen that was never exercised, thereby leaving Fox with its rights under
the 1994 agreement.

While the judge's determination could change as the suit proceeds, he is
basically siding with Fox's position right now. Does this mean Fox could
actually derail Warners' plans for Watchmen? Or is it all just about finding
the right price to settle on?

Superman Starting Over?

An update on the sequel and Singer.

by Jim Vejvoda http://movies.ign.com/email.html

August 19, 2008 - Warner Bros. is mulling over their comic book movie future
right now, from their long in-development Justice League of America movie to
Batman 3. But one particular project that appears to be bedeviling the
studio most is their sequel to Superman Returns, which was considered a box

The project, reportedly titled Superman: Man of Steel, has lingered in limbo

But now, according to an item today from
http://weblogs.variety.com/thompsononhollywood/2008/08/superman-status.html
Variety columnist Anne Thompson, Singer's involvement is not such a sure
thing after all.

Thompson blogged, Today I was told that it is a priority at the studio to
find the right direction and if Bryan Singer is willing to do that, fine,
but if he gets in the way, he may not stay on the project. There are no
writers working on a Superman script now. The studio wants to figure it out.
'It might be better to start from scratch,' one exec admitted.

So what do you think of the possibility that Singer might not be involved?

Nolan Mulling Batman 3

Warners has an offer out to the director.

by Jim Vejvoda http://movies.ign.com/email.html

August 18, 2008 - The Dark Knight
http://movies.ign.com/articles/899/899556p1.html soared past the first
Star Wars movie this weekend to become the second highest-grossing domestic
release of all time just behind Titanic. With over $470 million now in their
coffers, Warner Bros. is understandably eager to make sure that filmmaker
Christopher Nolan, the director of TDK and Batman Begins, returns to helm
the third installment in their revitalized Bat-franchise.

So far there had been little hard news about Batman 3 (but plenty of
unfounded casting gossip about who might play the villains in the next
sequel). Until now.

According to Variety, There's a deal for the director to helm a third pic,
but he has yet to decide on whether to tackle it yet. Warner Bros. studio
boss Alan Horn told the trade, We have no idea where Chris is going with
this. ... We haven't had any conversations with him about it.

Although the paper doesn't say, it should probably be expected that Nolan's
next directing effort will likely be a non-Batman project (assuming he even
wants to do Batman 3), much like how he followed the success of Batman
Begins with The Prestige.

Voltron in Turnaround

Director expected to be hired soon.

by Jim Vejvoda http://movies.ign.com/email.html

http://movies.ign.com/articles/899/899591p1.html

August 18, 2008 - New Regency has put their live-action big-screen
adaptation of the 1980s animated TV series Voltron: Defender of the Universe
into turnaround, in part because it could never seal a deal for the
property's Japanese rights holders.

Variety reports that Relativity Media is in negotiations to back the
property, though on a more moderate budget, utilizing the type of
cost-effective technology employed in films including 300.

The trade adds that a director for the Justin Marks-penned project is
expected to be hired in the coming week. The Mark Gordon Co. will also
produce.

According to Variety, Marks' take is described as a post-apocalyptic tale
set in New York City and Mexico, where five survivors of an alien attack
band together and end up piloting the five lion-shaped robots that combine
and form the massive sword-wielding Voltron that helps battle Earth's
invaders.

yeah and it's sad, we are so talented. Sometimes I think we let the beliefs
that we're built only for raw speed, power, and jumping blind us to all the
other things we can do. and even if--*if*--you go down that racial abilities
road, that'd still open up a host of possibilities. Even the stereotypical
aspects attributed to Black bodies would be killer for swimming, gymnastics,
crewing, archery, you name it.

I can believe that! I don't know of any fencing teams in my whole high school
system in fort worth--at least, not the public schools. I remember one girl
who played Lacrosse, but she went to a fancy private school. I discoverd
fencing in college; i really wanted to take a gymnastics class for
non-gymnasts, but time was off, and I happily took fencing. I was the only

Absolutely rare! In fact, there were only 2 of us on the fencing team, and we
joined together.
This was back in '65, and he (my good friend) got kicked off the team for being
a little too aggressive.
He ended up as an Airborne Ranger and did 3 tours in Vietnam.

As for swimming, my other friend was the only dark face on the team, and I used
to go to watch and
support him, too. This was back in '64 - '65, Newark, NJ.

It would surprise a great many people to learn that fencing has a number of
Black practitioners. You don't know until the mask comes off. I attended
Virginia State University, and several students wanted to form a competitive
team, but no other university in our conference was willing to field one.

“Pozdnyakov is one of the greatest fencers of all time,” Smart

That is amazing, Tracey. I loved fencing in college, if there'd been a Black
coach near me--lookout! Even now, as I seriously contemplate taking up martial
arts, I still do so with an eye to learning swordplay (love all types of
swords). I think fencing's a great sport to take up at any age. You're not too

Is Watchmen in Trouble?

Judge refuses to dismiss Fox lawsuit.

by Jim Vejvoda

August 18, 2008 - 20th Century Fox
sued Warner Bros. in February over the latter's right to make and
distribute the Watchmen movie, which had a long development history in
Hollywood including a spell at Fox. On Friday, a federal judge reportedly
refused to dismiss Fox's suit as requested in a motion filed by Warners. What
does this mean exactly for the highly anticipated film adaptation of the Alan
Moore-Dave Gibbons graphic novel, which is one of Warners' biggest 2009
releases?

As a Fox source for Deadline Hollywood Daily explained, In essence,
the Judge appears to conclude that Fox retained distribution rights in Watchmen
through the 1991 Largo quit claim, and he concludes that, under the 1994
turnaround, producer Larry Gordon acquired an option to acquire Fox's remaining
interest in Watchmen that was never exercised, thereby leaving Fox with
its rights under the 1994 agreement.

While the judge's determination could change as the suit proceeds, he is
basically siding with Fox's position right now. Does this mean Fox could
actually derail Warners' plans for Watchmen? Or is it all just about
finding the right price to settle on?
