Sadly this is NOT satire

The Young Republicans convention was held in Indianapolis last weekend and
their election of a racist, middle-aged woman as President isn't the only
controversial item to come out of the GOP gathering.

Local Republican blog Hoosier Access was able to get RNC Chairman Michael
Steele to sit down with a group of bloggers and they taped the conversation.
The old gaffe-o-matic (or as I like to call him, the Republican Joe Biden!)
answers a question from a gay person of color in this clip about the GOP's
diversity outreach.

Yes, that's right. To lure African-Americans into the GOP, Steele is offering
fried chicken and potato salad. Since he mentions Republicans should also be
reaching out to the LGBT community, I wonder what stereotype he's going to
offer us? Buttplugs and Birkenstocks?

Lavendar, I get the feeling that it's going to be a fair mix of mystical and
technological stuff they'll be hunting for.

If I may add here, the new ep following Eureka last night was a little
better, IMO. More in flow, fewer odd quirks (though there were still plenty).
And they really could've left Number Sex -- uh, Six, forgive me -- on the shelf
here. Any other actress could've played that role, and probably brought more to
it.

OK I did watch Warehouse 13 and I did thought that it was an updated version of
X-files. Or with a hipper view on it. But it never dawn on me to think of
Friday 13th the Series. That was my show and I love Ryan more then his cousin.
But with that comparison the items on 13 is not that mystical as it was on
Friday 13th.

Syfy is back, now with Ys, vying even harder for your attention. But the
network's name isn't the only thing that has been re-purposed; its new staple
shows seem oddly familiar. Why is Syfy so unapologetically recycling old
television?

Syfy is trying to impress us with its new look and new shows, like a small-town
girl who moves to the big city to be an actress, bleaches her hair platinum
blonde and changes her name. And while we remain skeptical of clichéd
reinvention, we have to admit - it worked for Norma Jeane.

Warehouse 13 premiered this week on Syfy, and many viewers were filled with a
strong sense of Déjà vu. A pair of odd-couple government agents are sent to
investigate paranormal activity, blatantly setting the characters up as
replicas of Mulder and Scully. Couldn't Syfy at least have mixed things up a
bit by making Pete being the by-the-book skeptic and Myka being the intuitive
true-believer? But it's not just the agents themselves that are borrowed
directly from the archives:

The name of show, and its very concept, evokes another direct influence: the
quirky Canadian series Friday the 13th that aired in 1987, about a pair of
cousins who inherit an antique shop that turns out to be filled with
supernatural artifacts. They too are aided by an eccentric middle-aged man with
a vast knowledge of the supernatural. In Friday, the female lead is named
Micki, and Warehouse's tight-laced female agent is Myka - here again, Syfy
strives to make things new and shiny by swapping ys for is.

This isn't a new approach by any means. When Syfy's old staple show, Eureka,
first premiered in 2006, its premise was equally familiar; government official
gets sent to a small town in the Pacific Northwest to investigate a strange
occurrence, teams up with local law enforcement and becomes deeply embroiled in
the wacky little town and all its colorful characters. Sheriff Carter is no
Agent Cooper, but the sense of odd familiarity about the show was undeniable.
Eureka appeared to be a candy-coated kid's coloring-book version of Twin Peaks.

The question remains, why isn't Syfy trying harder to hide its repackaging of
television we already know and love? Do they hope that by transparently
recycling these well-worn television tropes they can take a direct route to
high ratings and fan admiration? Certainly the ever-increasing number of movie
sequels indicates more of the same is a safe bet. Syfy already seems to be
engaged in rebooting even more 80's television, including Quantum Leap and
Alien Nation. It is remarkable how much attention all these new shows have
gotten on blogs, message boards and by word of mouth. Perhaps the network
executives at Syfy know the game better than we imagine, and are inviting us to
play along as we watch them pressing our buttons. But don't they also know that
familiarity breeds contempt?

You have our attention, Syfy - now can you show us something new?

And Deacon Jones is the guy who introduces you to your new life. The white dude
who's newly resurrected is given a videotape of Jones, who all but explodes
from the TV in his fervor. He gives the hapless dude the scoop on his new life,
and then, leaning even further into the camera, Jones says And one more
thing--Nooo sex!

You see, there are all these evil undead/zombie like people called Moorlocks
(I think) who look like humans most of the time. The newly resurrected
do-gooders have a lease on life that's odd: they can't commit anything
considered a mortal sin, or they're toast. Well, it seems that having sex
with a Moorlock is a mortal sin, and, since you can't tell them from humans,
it's better to simply avoid the whole affair rather than risk that.

It was really good, quirky, fun show, with great characters. Think Reaper
with a bit more humor and danger. Gone too soon. Brooks was perfect for his
role, his deep, almost pained way of speaking lending itself to the dry humour
of the show. I remember one show when he was talking to his partner about the
need to be celibate and how hard it was. He reminisced about this one Sister he
was really tempted by. The description: She was a backup singer with Gap Band,
and man could she burn some pork chops in the kitchen!

I still roll with laughter thinking of that line. You really have to hear it to
experience the full effect.

It had Richard Brooks of Law amp; Order and Clayton Rohner playing two
formerly dead men who are resurrected by the forces of Good to return demons to

Oh -- and they can't have any contact with people in their past lives.

[scifinoir2] Re: Bill Cosby Does it Again... Profound!

2009-07-15 Thread votomguy
While I agree with the spirit of what was said, I think that there's this
misconception that Blacks can't or won't speak English. It's called DIALECT.
The simple fact is that there are people from England who can't speak good
English. We tend to focus on too many of the wrong things when it comes to
fixing what's wrong with our communities. We don't spend enough time trying to
fix why black men drop their seed and roll when the woman gets pregnant. And
where's the support for these 2, 12, 18 yr olds to fill in the gap. Instead
it's easier to look the other way and say someone needs to take care of their
responsiblity. It's comparable to the problem of US infrastructure falling
apart. We've known about the problem for years, but we'll wait until the
problem costs too much in resources to fix or worse we wait until a bridge
collapses. At least the single mom is working at Walmart, there was a time when
she would be on welfare. Lack of fathers is the primary cause of most of this,
but then noone wants to take time out to teach men without fathers what it
means to be a father. Its easier to just give some speech and tell them about
fatherhood. Noone wants to get their hands dirty. Unfortunately, that includes
Dr Cosby.

Since he mentions Republicans should also
be reaching out to the LGBT community, I wonder what stereotype he's going to
 offer us? Buttplugs and Birkenstocks?

Ah Eureka. Loved it and contrary to my Boo’s view, I was very patient in my
waiting. Love this shows humor, inventions, and diversity.

And agreed. That last line about a ufo. Oh yeah, kick it up a notch. Can’t wait.

I noticed that they had a few new names in the production company in the
credits, Fate, so I can't really judge how this will affect the quality of the
programs. But I am hopeful.

And they *had* to toss in the human bits. Otherwise, I would've been seven feet
tall and only had six fingers. ;-)
