Also Mr.Voiceover himself Seth MacFarlane. That show can't possibly last.

Is anyone planning on checking out FlashForward on Thursday? Anyone
 read
   the book?

   http://scifiwire.com/2009/06/we-saw-the-pilot-heres-wh.php

*We saw the pilot, and here's why we think you're going to like
   FlashForward*

We got an early look at ABC's upcoming sci-fi series *FlashForward* on
Wednesday night at Disney/ABC's mothership in beautiful downtown
 Burbank,
and while we can't give you a proper review, we can tell you this:

   Watch it.

We were asked not to divulge any spoilery details or to tell you much
 about
what we sawâ€which was the one-hour pilot episodeâ€but we can tell
 you what
   it's not.

It's not *Lost*, though it has elements of that show: a high-concept
sci-fi premise, told intimately through the lives (present and future)
 of
about 10 main characters, as well as a deep, abiding mystery that will
 be
unraveled over the course of the first season and subsequent seasons
 right
   up to the last minute.

It's not *The X-Files*, though it has an FBI agent (Joseph Fiennes) at
 its
heart and a procedural element to its storylines, with potential
 criminals
and other bad guys and creepy weirdness here and there.

It's not *ER, Fringe, Heroes* or any other hit drama, though it shares
elements with all of those shows, including a main character who's a
surgeon, weird science and people who may or may not have access to
 strange
   visions.

No, it's that rare thing in television: something completely new. And,
 at
least judging by the big-screen Blu-ray version we saw, it will look
absolutely gorgeous, not to say epic, for a TV show.

Based on the novel by Canadian SF author Robert J. Sawyer,
 *FlashForward*(not
*Flash Forward*) begins when every person on Earth blacks out for 2
minutes and 17 seconds, during which time each has a vision of his or
 her
   future six months from now.

There have been comparisons to *Lost*, ... [that the show is] a
*Lost*replacement, executive producer David S. Goyer told an audience on
Wednesday. [But] it was written as a spec and originally was even
anticipated to be an HBO show. So it wasn't written at all for ABC or
 to be
a *Lost* replacement. And I think the comparisons are accurate in that
 we
also have a very large cast and are telling a very big, cinematic,
 ambitious
story, but I think once you see the pilot ... that's where the
 similarities
   end.

Goyer and show runner Marc Guggenheim are big TV fans themselves and
promised that they have a plan for the show that will play out in
 season one
and then in subsequent seasons in a way that is deliberate and not
 vamping.
   Seriously.

For one thingâ€and this is a spoiler we can revealâ€the first season
 is
designed to reach a kind of climax on the very real date of April 29,
 2010.
   There's no getting around it.

So what happens if the show does get picked up for a second season?

Well, obviously, we're not going to tell you that right now, Goyer
 says
with mock exasperation. You know? But I will say that at the end of
 the
first season, the promise of the first season is all the glimpses of
 the
future that you've seen of our series regulars, that we've teased, we
 will
know whether those particular futures have come to pass or not.

In terms of what happens next, we're not going to tell you; that's
 part of
the fun, Goyer added. And part of the fun in the breaking of the
 stories
is also subverting expectations. Because you plant this big flag
 saying,
'OK, April 29, six months from now.' I think it's natural for the
 audience
to assume that we're just going to vamp until episodes 20 and 21, and
 then a
   bunch of s--t's

`Ice Age 3' Climbs to Lofty Foreign Milestone

by Brandon Gray

September 15, 2009

On the foreign front, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs has officially become the
third highest-grossing movie of all time. The animated comedy edged out Harry
Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone to rank behind Titanic and The Lord of the
Rings: The Return of the King. Worldwide (which combines both foreign and
domestic grosses), it currently stands at No. 18 on the all time chart, just
shy of Finding Nemo, which it will soon surpass.

The third Ice Age has made over $667 million thus far, accounting for a
whopping 77 percent of its $862 million worldwide total. That's the greatest
foreign ratio for an American blockbuster on record, exceeding such foreign
favorites as the Harry Potter and The Da Vinci Code movies.

Based on its domestic run, Dawn of the Dinosaurs may seem like an unlikely
contender for any all time chart. Despite the ticket price boost of its 3D
presentations, its domestic gross is under $195 million, which is slightly less
than its predecessor, Ice Age: The Meltdown. In terms of attendance, it trails
both The Meltdown and the first Ice Age, domestically.

However, while the Ice Age franchise hasn't grown domestically, foreign
appreciation has surged over the years, beginning with The Meltdown. The first
Ice Age generated around $207 million overseas, but The Meltdown leapt to a
smashing $460 million. Dawn of the Dinosaurs has continued that progression,
capitalizing on a variety of factors, from the franchise's universal slapstick
and family appeal to its flexibility in being tailored for each market.

Dawn of the Dinosaurs' biggest foreign markets have been Germany and France,
where it's No. 1 for the year with mammoth tallies of $78.7 million and $69.5
million, respectively. The United Kingdom is its third highest-grossing market
at $56.7 million, ranking second for the year behind the latest Harry Potter.
It's also the top movie of 2009 in Russia, Mexico, Brazil, Italy, Spain and
other countries, though it hasn't translated nearly as well in Asia.

This afternoon I took advantage of an opportunity to see
Azur Asmar: the Prince's Quest on the big screen. Apparently, the
gorgeously rendered 3D computer animated movie with two-dimensional, painted
backgrounds and non-photo realistic rendering has not been wildly distributed
because a female character's nipples are visible during an early breastfeeding
scene.

(I admit I was initially started - but not shocked and saddened - to see
realistically rendered nipples on a brown woman's chest in an animated movie -
America IS a very young country).

I was lucky to see this feature on the big screen thanks to the on-going
Milwaukee Film Festival. If you get the opportunity, run, do not walk, to see
it.

The elaborate and beautiful vistas presented in this movie are extraordinary
and the dark-haired, brown-eyed Asmar (and his mother) are as beautifully
rendered as the blonde, blue-eyed Azur. Further, it is a captivating and
engaging tale reminiscent of 1001 Arabian Nights.

I highly recommend it.

So did the rest of us. The WTF part at least.

Verhoeven's career path reminds me of Joel Schumacher in some ways. They both
had very successful careers and then made an ill fated movie(or two) that
seemed to derail them. Both recovered but some of their mojo was gone.

So did the rest of us. The WTF part at least.

Verhoeven's career path reminds me of Joel Schumacher in some ways. They both
had very successful careers and then made an ill fated movie(or two) that
seemed to derail them. Both recovered but some of their mojo was gone.

I know Black Book was critically acclaimed (I still
haven't seen it) but Starship Troopers is a hot mess. I still assert
Verhoeven hasn't done anything post-Showgirls to rival his work pre-Showgirls.

  Rave,

Verhoeven did Starship Troopers and Black Book post-Showgirls. Starshp
Troopers isn't a fave but it was well received and Black Book was
  critically acclaimed.

Unfortunately he also squeezed Hollow Man in there too.

I HATED Showgirls the first time I saw it because, at
the time, I adored Paul Verhoeven's films: Fresh and Blood, RoboCop,
Total Recall, and Basic Instinct. The phenomenal success of Basic
Instinct is the worse thing that could have happened to Verhoeven. He
hasn't made a successful movie since. Showgirls is SO big, bloated,
overblown, underwritten and BAD, it is almost good.

Did I miss something? I don't see Catwoman on this
list. Catwoman clocked a mighty 10% fresh rating and this list
starts with Whiteout (number 100) with a 7% fresh rating. It is all
down hill from there.

While this list is strictly based on the fresh rating these films
accrued (or failed to), there should be a distinction between something
like Basic Instinct 2 which is high gloss trash(like Showgirls) but
watchable and Glitter which is utterly unwatchable.

[scifinoir2] The Dollhouse Thread Again

2009-09-27 Thread Bosco Bosco
I watched the new season premiere this weekend on my DVR. If you are not
watching this show, you are missing out. Whedon's trademark character
development is blooming in full effect. Amy Acker's character, among others, is
fleshing out in fabulous ways.

This show is going to become some of Whedon's best work.

[scifinoir2] Golf Trip

2009-09-27 Thread Augustus Augustus
Frank
and his buddies were hanging out and planning a 5-day golf trip.
Unfortunately, he had to tell them that he couldn't go because his wife
wouldn't let him.   After a lot of teasing and name calling, Frank
headed home totally frustrated.  The following week when Frank's
buddies arrived at the golf resort, they were shocked to  see Frank sitting in
the lobby, drinking a beer, holding his putter!

How did you talk your wife into letting you go, Frank?

I
didn't have to, Frank replied. Last night I slumped down in my chair
with a beer to drown my sorrows. Then, my wife snuck up behind me and
covered my eyes and said, 'Surprise.'  When I peeled her hands back,
she was standing there in a beautiful see-through negligee and said,
'Carry me into the bedroom and tie me to the bed, and you can do
whatever you want'..SO HERE I AM!
