Re: [scifinoir2] Clock winds down for '24'
Whoops... pardon me, Fate. [?][?] The idea of a countdown was sorta done in Nick of Timehttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt0113972/. If memory serves, the counter wasn't on-screen continuously, just at critical points in the movie. Constant countdown, as you said, would make for more suspense. Studio and network execs declined comment -- but it's believed that the final decision will be made in the next day or two. Move is not a huge surprise, but still reps the end of an era for Fox. 24 helped usher in Fox's ratings surge in the 2000s, as the franchise -- along with American Idol and House, among other series -- led the network to the No. 1 spot in the adults 18-49 demo. But the cost of producing 24 has continued to increase, while ratings have dipped. A one-time critical darling, 24 has also received its share of knocks from critics this season. The studio is said to be considering shopping 24 to other nets -- but given the thriller's age and pricetag, it's believed interest from other outlets will be limited. Yet even as the bell tolls for 24 in primetime, the franchise is far from dead. Sutherland and the 24 team have been keen on adapting the show as a feature film, and have made major strides in recent months toward making that long-term goal a reality. Twentieth Century Fox's film side recently hired scribe Billy Ray (State of Play, Flightplan) to pen the script for the feature version (Daily Variety, Feb. 8.) Ray's pitch, which takes Jack Bauer to Europe, was a hit with Fox execs and producers of the high-concept television series. Script is said to have come through 24 star Sutherland, who's also an exec producer on the series. Such a move into the features world was considered impossible while production continued on the TV series -- given that 24 takes much of the year to produce, with its feature-like shooting schedule. But with the show expected to end its run, the ability to focus on a movie could now finally be in sight. 24 was created by Robert Cochran and Joel Surnow, while exec producer Howard Gordon runs the show through his Real Time Prods. banner. Brian Grazer's Imagine Entertainment produces the show along with 20th

On Fri, Mar 12, 2010 at 9:07 PM, Mr. Worf hellomahog...@gmail.com wrote: Shot in 2007, New World Order is a documentary that follows several 9/11 conspiracy theorists in the days leading up to the anniversary of 9/11. The theorists comprise of Jack McLamb (a former cop living in the mountains of Idaho), AM talk show host Alex Jones, a volunteer worker from New Orleans, and a protest organizer in NYC. Part of the documentary was spent following Alex Jones around Washington D.C. attempting to film the Trilateral Commission aka the Bilderberg group. What we end up with was lots of footage of an apparent private security force that may or may not have included Secret Service officials. Who was actually in the building we will never really know. The bulk of the film dives into the lives of each of the theorists and their personal views on 9/11, and the New World Order. My favorite scene in the movie was when the combined groups of conspiracy theorists surround a live broadcast being shot by Geraldo Rivera, who subtly gives Alex Jones the finger after he called Geraldo a media whore. One of the interesting things about watching this movie is seeing how some of the theories were correct. One being the housing bailout. Unfortunately, you have still have a 50/50 chance when you guess at something. Is the Trilateral Commission trying to control the world? Are we teetering on the edge of loosing all of our rights? You make the call. The movie New World Order is airing on IFC this month. -- Celebrating 10 years of bringing diversity to perversity! Pi Day falls on March 14th because of the first digits of Pi- 3.14. Another geeky boon is that the holiday also happens to be the birthday of one of science’s biggest rockstars, Albert Einstein. Many cities and institutions of geekery, like the Maryland Science Center , hold celebrations to party down on the mathiest day of the year. The OC Register points out that not only is the Discovery Science Center hosting a shindig, but some local restaurants are dishing out free pie in honor of Pi Day. From Wikipedia: Aquaman has also appeared in animated and live-action television programs. In pop culture, Aquaman has frequently been the subject of mockery for his distinctive powers, which are often comically portrayed as useless in comparison to those of other superheroes. The first recurring supporting characters in the feature were various sea creatures, including Ark, a pet seal who appeared in several of Aquaman's 1940s adventures, and Topo, Aquaman's pet octopus, who first appeared in Adventure Comics #229 (Oct. 1956). It is interesting to me that both Aquaman (and Marvel's Sub-Mariner (Marie Severin) were at one time penciled by women. --- In scifinoir2@yahoogroups.com, Keith Johnson keithbjohn...@... wrote: He was better and more interesting during the times he acted more like Namor: when he lost the hand, grew his hair and beard out, and adopted a much more me against the Surface Dwellers attitude. [scifinoir2] The Burn Notice episode of FX's Archer
Did anyone see the Burn Notice episode of FX's Archer? While I am still trying to decipher why every voice actor on the show SHOUTS his or her lines I found this biting deconstruction of the Bondsian secret agent oeuvre both disturbing and hilarious. ~rave! http://www.fxnetworks.com/shows/originals/archer/
[scifinoir2] .com horror stories
People lost a LOT of money back then, but it was mostly on paper. Today, I heard the worst horror story of them all. One woman that was a designer for Palm computer had gained over the .com years $200 million in stock. By the end of the .com crash she had lost $199 million. That's scary. That made me not feel so bad about loosing $40k. -- Celebrating 10 years of bringing diversity to perversity! Mahogany at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mahogany_pleasures_of_darkness/
[scifinoir2] .'Mission: Impossible' star Peter Graves dies in LA
Sad news. I was always a fan of Graves. Reading about his curriculum vitae, i'm reminded about how times have changed. His early movies were fighting a giant carrot-alien-thingie, and a giant grasshopper? That wouldn't play nowadays--outside of a cheesy SyFy Originals movie, that is. Thinking of the *real* Mission: Impossible makes me miss all the more shows and movies centered around true suspense and intelligent plotting, rather than explosions, FX, and whizz-bang of modern fare, such as the inferiour movies Tom Cruise made out of the IM franchise. And I'm also reminded that Graves was extremely upset--rightfully so--that Cruise decided to make Jim Phelps a murderous traitor in the first film. Disgusting. Indeed, in a interview several years ago, Graves said this: [http://www.movieline.com/2009/10/peter-graves-a-return-to-mission-impossible-iv-would-be-good.php?page=all] When the first film was made with Tom [Cruise], I certainly objected to Jon Voight playing a character named Phelps who turns out to be the rat and the spy and the killer who destroys his whole team of people — and he himself is killed in that film. I didn’t like that much. And certainly the approach to Mission: Impossible, which had been a sort of intellectual game, rather than shoot ‘em up, car crash, plane crash, bang bang stuff. Graves also had reservations about playing both a comedic role in Airplane, and, playing a man who gets really freaky toward a young boy--something else that certainly wouldn't play nowadays. Still, the move was a boon to his career. Good actor who did some good stuff--including films like Stalag 17 that most people nowadays know nothing about. He will be missed, and for my mind, he will always be the *real* Jim Phelps who wasn't a traitor! ** http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/ap_en_ce/us_obit_peter_graves 'Mission: Impossible' star Peter Graves dies in LA LOS ANGELES – Peter Graves , the tall, stalwart actor likely best known for his portrayal of Jim Phelps , leader of a gang of special agents who battled evil conspirators in the long-running television series Mission: Impossible , died Sunday. Graves died of an apparent heart attack outside his Los Angeles home, publicist Sandy Brokaw said. He would have been 84 this week. Graves had just returned from brunch with his wife and kids and collapsed before he made it into the house, Brokaw said. One of his daughters administered CPR but was unable to revive him. Graves' family doctor visited the house and believed he had a heart attack, Brokaw said. Although Graves never achieved the stardom his older brother, James Arness, enjoyed as Marshal Matt Dillon on TV's Gunsmoke, he had a number of memorable roles in both films and television. Normally cast as a hero, he turned in an unforgettable performance early in his career as the treacherous Nazi spy in Billy Wilder 's 1953 prisoner-of-war drama Stalag 17 . He also masterfully lampooned his straight-arrow image when he portrayed bumbling airline pilot Clarence Oveur in the 1980 disaster movie spoof Airplane! Graves appeared in dozens of films and a handful of television shows in a career of nearly 60 years. The authority and trust he projected made him a favorite for commercials late in his life, and he was often encouraged to go into politics. He had this statesmanlike quality, Brokaw said. People were always encouraging him to run for office. But he said, 'I like acting. I like being around actors.' Graves' career began with cheaply made exploitation films like It Conquered the World , in which he battled a carrot-shaped monster from Venus, and Beginning of the World, in which he fought a giant grasshopper. He later took on equally formidable human villains each week on Mission: Impossible . Every show began with Graves, as agent Phelps, listening to a tape of instructions outlining his team's latest mission and explaining that if he or any of his agents were killed or captured the secretary will disavow any knowledge of your actions. The tape always self-destructed within seconds of being played. The show ran on CBS from 1967 to 1973 and was revived on ABC from 1988 to 1990 with Graves back as the only original cast member. The actor credited clever writing for the show's success. It made you think a little bit and kept you on the edge of your seat because you never knew what was going to happen next, he once said. He also played roles in such films as John Ford's The Long Gray Line and Charles Laughton 's The Night of the Hunter , as well as The Court-Martial of Billy Mitchell, Texas Across the River and The Ballad of Josie . Graves' first television series was a children's Saturday morning show, Fury, about an orphan and his untamed black stallion . Filmed in Australia , it lasted six years on NBC . A western, Whiplash, also shot in Australia,
