Re: [scifinoir2] Mortal Kombat: Rebirth!!!
This one looks like a more realistic reboot where they explain the background of the characters a little better. I believe that all of these movies could be made into entertaining action films if they had stuck to the storylines that were written in the games. Unfortunately, the older versions of these movies tended to take the schlocky kid friendly approach and that ruined the movie. The second movie, however, was crap. - Original Message - From: Mr. Worf hellomahog...@gmail.com To: scifinoir2@yahoogroups.com Sent: Wednesday, June 9, 2010 6:19:18 PM GMT -05:00 US/Canada Eastern Subject: [scifinoir2] Mortal Kombat: Rebirth!!! The discovery hints at an ecosystem that could have -- or may still -- exist on Mars. The bacteria were found in Lost Hammer, a shallow spring located on Canada's Axel Heiberg Island. The spring, which is about 25 percent salt, never freezes despite sub-zero temperatures most of the year. The first time we went there we noticed there were bubbles coming off the spring, McGill University microbiologist Lyle Whyte told Discovery News. Analysis showed the gas was 50 percent methane -- an unusually high concentration -- and was not being produced by living organisms, such as methanogenic bacteria. Rather, the gas resulted from geology -- the interactions of water and rock. That was a surprise, Whyte said. There was more to come: The team found two types of bacteria living in Lost Hammer that feed off the methane and likely breathe sulfate, since there is no usable oxygen in the water. The discovery adds a new twist to the debate about possible life on Mars, a cold, dry world that in many ways resembles the Canadian Arctic. Pockets of methane have been found on Mars, with no clear explanation to their origins. The new research shows that even if Mars' methane is determined to come from non-biologic sources, it could actually be food for a whole different type of bacteria. The methane-eating microbes are common on Earth, but the discovery in the Canadian Arctic is believed to be the first time they've been found in a non-marine environment. We've added another group of bacteria that could exist on Mars, Whyte said. If we were to find life of any kind on Mars, that would be a hell of a discovery. The consensus is that we evolved from microbes in the first place, so to find life is really a significant finding. Right

The consensus is that we evolved from microbes in the first place, so to find life is really a significant finding. Right now, we're looking for the plumbing that allows life to exist, added Dale Anderson, a Mars scientist with the SETI Institute. What we're trying to do here on Earth is learn how life goes about its business -- from the temperate regions to the more extreme environments that we find in polar springs or hot vents -- and understand how microorganisms use those environments and cope with the challenges. We may not find the same thing on Mars. We may find that it has a completely independent genesis of life... or we could find out it's the same because Mars and Earth have been 'swapping spit' for the last 4 billion years or so, Anderson said. In addition to adding a new bacterial species to the list of possible Mars life forms, the Lost Hammer research also shows a geologic mechanism which could explain the mysterious methane plumes on Mars. The research is being published in the International Society for Microbial Ecology Journal. http://news.discovery.com/space/arctic-bacteria-mars-methane.html

[scifinoir2] Costner tells Congress he's got an oil spill solution
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/business/deepwaterhorizon/7045250.html Actor Kevin Costner told Congress on Wednesday that he has a solution to ocean oil spills: a machine that separates oil from water. Costner said he has spent more than $20 million for the patent and development of the machines since 1993 because he was inspired by the Exxon-Valdez oil spill in 1989. There's been some question as to why I'm here, Costner told the House Energy and Environment subcommittee. I want to assure everyone here it's not because I heard a voice in a cornfield, a reference to Field of Dreams. In that 1989 film, Costner played the role of a farmer who turned his cornfield into a baseball field. The machines marketed by Ocean Therapy Solutions are like vacuum cleaners that suck up the oily water and separate the pollutants through a centrifuge. BP recently put in an order for 32 of the machines to help clean up the Gulf of Mexico, according to Ocean Therapy Solutions CEO John Houghtaling, who said the 32 machines could process 6 million gallons of water a day.

The machines — marketed by Ocean Therapy Solutions — are like vacuum cleaners that suck up the oily water and separate the pollutants through a centrifuge. BP recently put in an order for 32 of the machines to help clean up the Gulf of Mexico, according to Ocean Therapy Solutions CEO John Houghtaling, who said the 32 machines could process 6 million gallons of water a day. -- If all the world's a stage and we are merely players, who the bloody hell wrote the script? -- Charles E Grant http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQUxw9aUVik

Re: [scifinoir2] Re: Mortal Kombat Returns
You must not have seen Why Did I Get Married Too? or Black Dynamite, both of which starred White, in the last year. The former was typical Tyler Perry fare, with a lot of time devoted to White's comedic role as a husband with a (justifiably) suspicious wife. The later was pitch-perfect in the first half, a great spoof of Blaxploitation films, though it unfortunately got sillier and even less believable in the second half. Still, it coud be the template for a great run of movies if done right, kinda like a black, '70's version of the Police Squad flicks. - Original Message - From: Michelle Lauren miche...@michellelaurenbooks.com To: scifinoir2@yahoogroups.com Sent: Thursday, June 10, 2010 8:53:02 AM GMT -05:00 US/Canada Eastern Subject: [scifinoir2] Re: Mortal Kombat Returns One word: AWESOME. [scifinoir2] Distress Signal Received from Teen Attempting Solo Circumnavigation
Wow, I hope the young lady is okay. I honestly didn't know parents were letting their young teens undertake adventures like this: my folks wouldn't even let me leave the state at that age! What incredible toughness of mind and body these kids must have to attempt something that has broken many an older and more seasoned sailor. Let's hope this one ends on a good note. I wonder how the family financially swings this, as the boat can't be cheap? What about her schooling? Did she graduate early, delay her graduation, or what? Of course, one could argue that sailing solo around the globe at 16 is way more educational than sitting in class memorizing history dates or something. * [AP News] California teen girl in trouble on solo world sail LOS ANGELES — A 16-year-old Southern California girl attempting a solo sail around the world was feared in trouble Thursday thousands of miles from land in the frigid, heaving southern Indian Ocean after her emergency beacons began signaling and communication was lost. Australian Maritime Safety Authority spokeswoman Carly Lusk said three vessels were sent from the French territory of Reunion Island and an aircraft was to depart from Perth on a four-hour flight to Abby Sunderland's location more than 2,000 miles from both Africa and Australia. It was not clear when the vessels left, but it would take a day for the nearest ship to reach the area. Reunion Island is off Madagascar, the very large island along the east coast of Africa. Conditions can quickly become perilous for any sailor exposed to the elements in that part of the world. We've got to get a plane out there quick, said family spokesman Christian Pinkston, adding that the teen's family in Thousand Oaks was asking for prayers for her safety. Her brother Zac, also a teenage solo sailor, said Abby was prepared and mentally tough. I really wish I could see her and hope she gets through this one, he told reporters outside the family home. Abby last communicated with her family at 4 a.m. PDT and reported 30-foot swells but was not in distress, Pinkston said. An hour later the family was notified that her emergency beacons had been activated, and there was no further communication. Pinkston said the beacons were manually activated. Her brother said the boat was most likely not completely submerged because another beacon would be triggered at a depth of 15 feet. Derrick Fries, a U.S. sailing instruction and safety expert, said Abby's circumstances were very unclear. It's hard to determine if she's rolled over, swamped, or washed overboard. She has to have a dry suit on to have any chance, he said. To be capsized in the middle of the ocean with waves crashing relentlessly down, not just for hours, but days, I can't tell you how difficult those conditions are. A lifelong sailor whose father is a shipwright and has a yacht management company, Abby set sail from Los Angeles County's Marina del Rey in her 40-foot boat, Wild Eyes, on Jan. 23 in an attempt to become the youngest person to sail around the world alone without stopping. Her brother briefly held the record in 2009. Before Abby's voyage began, her brother described her as having more skill and experience than most sailors in their 20s and 30s. Her father said she had more solo sailing experience than Zac did before he started out. He totally thinks that I'm ready to do it, so that does help, she said at the time. Abby soon ran into equipment problems and had to stop for repairs. She gave up the goal of setting the record in April, but continued on. On May 15, Australian 16-year-old Jessica Watson claimed the record after completing a 23,000-mile circumnavigation in 210 days. Abby left Cape Town, South Africa, on May 21 and on Monday reached the halfway point of her voyage. On Wednesday, she wrote in her log that it had been a rough few days with huge seas that had her boat rolling around like crazy. I've been in some rough weather for awhile with winds steady at 40-45 knots with higher gusts, she wrote. With that front passing, the conditions were lighter today. It was a nice day today with some lighter winds which gave me a chance to patch everything up. Wild Eyes was great through everything but after a day with over 50 knots at times, I had quite a bit of work to do. Information on her website said that as of June 8 she had completed a 2,100-mile leg from South Africa to north of the Kerguelen Islands, taking a route to avoid an ice hazard area. Ahead of her lay more than 2,100 miles of ocean on a 10- to 16-day leg to a point south of Cape Leeuwin on the southwest tip of Australia. Charlie Nobles, executive director of the American Sailing Association, said the best-case scenario would be that she had had a severe knockdown or roll by a strong wave that caused her communication equipment to go out, or the
[scifinoir2] Dreamworks' Megamind Looks to Be Pretty Good
Wow, this looks like it might be pretty good. Right off the bat, the color and polish of the CGI caught my attention. It frankly looks closer to Pixar's level of visuals than some of the serviceable-but-unremarkable fare like the Madagascar stuff. The superhero's details are pretty impressive even in this trailer. Of course, it reminds one of The Incredibles in same ways, but that's not a bad thing. I'm having high hopes for Dreamworks' animation studio now. [scifinoir2] NBC Sports Editorial: Should Kids Attempt Dangerous Tasks?
Following up on the story of the missing teen sailor, a blogger's take on letting kids attempt dangerous goals... ** http://outofbounds.nbcsports.com/2010/06/post-582.html.php What's with kids and all these death-defying stunts? Thu Jun 10,2010 12:00 PM ET By Rick Chandler It's the Year of Living Dangerously for kids, for sure. Every time I look up it seems some youngster is attempting a death-defying feat of some sort, with mom and dad's permission. In the past couple of weeks we've told you about Jordan Romero , who at 13 became the youngest person ever to summit Mt. Everest. Then there's 12-year-old Mexican bullfighter Michelito Lagravere, who has already been gored twice ; the latest on Sunday. Now, Abby Sunderland, who at 16 was attempting to become the youngest sailor to circumnavigate the globe, may be lost at sea. Her crew has lost contact with her, and two emergency beacons have been activated on her boat. Abby's mother, MaryAnne Sunderland, told ABC News that Abby manually activated two beacons around 6 a.m. Pacific Time Thursday. Abby was in 20-25 foot waves at the time of last contact, with 35-knot winds, said MaryAnne Sunderland, who is due to give birth at the end of the month. She was shaken but focused on trying to get a rescue effort together. The closest land to Abby's boat was Reunion Island, which is east of Madagascar. The nearest ship was 400 miles away. Rescuers were trying to contact the ship. I don't pretend to understand the mindset that these parents have to allow their children to so blatantly court disaster. The common thread here seems to be that the adults want their children to live their dreams, but besides the obvious danger involved, there's such a thing as peaking too early. So you've sailed the globe solo, or just climbed Mr. Everest, all before your high school prom. What do you do for an encore? Today, my eight-year-old son will strap himself to a rocket, which is pointed at the moon. I see no way this can and badly. Live your dream, young man. And bring a warm coat. At least the Balloon Boy dad had enough sense to fake the whole thing; his son rode out his adventure safely, in a box in the attic. And yet he's is the parent who did jail time. And now this January post from the blog Californality has a real tinge of sadness: Living in the same community as Abby does, I first heard of her plan to sail around the world a while back. My first reaction to her plan was surprise and concern. She's such a young girl. I know that probably sounds gender-biased, but sorry. The rest of the world is not sunny Southern California. What about bandits, the cartel and pirates? I heard Abby saying that she knows God will totally protect her. She was very serious and meant it. Her family shares her conviction. Abby was approximately 500 miles north of the Antarctic Islands when her crew lost contact with her. She began the trip from Marina del Rey in southern California on Feb. 19, with the latest leg completed this past Tuesday (South Africa to North of the Kerguelen Islands -- 2,100 miles). She's been blogging about the journey on her web site , with the latest entry put up this morning. Her older brother, Zac Sunderland, completed the trip in 2009.

State? Keith, I couldn't leave the city by myself when I was sixteen. And this kid's got to be loaded, to be able to swing this trip. Would that, instead of the need to be in the record books, she'd felt the need to sell that boat and donate the money to a worthy charity. Ahead of her lay

Re: [scifinoir2] NBC Sports Editorial: Should Kids Attempt Dangerous Tasks?
I think allowing kids to do stuff solo that are on a life or death level is a bad idea. There have been many adults that have attempted to sail that far on their own and have found themselves in serious trouble. Kids do not have the maturity or experience to get themselves out of intense situations that could possibly kill them. This is another case of poor parental decision making. Also, you have to think what are the real motives behind doing a stunt like this? Bragging rights? Fame by proxy? [scifinoir2] Rare photo of slave children found in NC attic
Wow, this is something else. So haunting: what were those kids thinking about? What kid of lives would they go on to lead? Did they ever truly taste whatever passed for freedom in those times (cause post-slavery sure as hell ain't the same as being free). Did they ever learn to read and write, own a home, start a business? Were they in the end happy? And what would they have said if someone had gone up to them and said, one day the President of these United States will be a Negro--but it'll take another 150 years? Would they gasp with wonder and joy, or be sad at the fact they wouldn't live to see it--assuming they could even dream of such a thing? Truly an experience staring into those eyes and wondering... Art historians believe it's an extremely rare Civil War-era photograph of children who were either slaves at the time or recently emancipated. The photo, which may have been taken in the early 1860s, was a testament to a dark part of American history, said Will Stapp, a photographic historian and founding curator of the National Portrait Gallery's photographs department at the Smithsonian Institution. It's a very difficult and poignant piece of American history, he said. What you are looking at when you look at this photo are two boys who were victims of that history. In April, the photo was found at a moving sale in Charlotte, accompanied by a document detailing the sale of John for $1,150, not a small sum in 1854. New York collector Keya Morgan said he paid $30,000 for the photo album including the photo of the young boys and several family pictures and $20,000 for the sale document. Morgan said the deceased owner of the home where the photo was found was thought to be a descendant of John. A portrait of slave children is rare, Morgan said. I buy stuff all the time, but this shocked me, he said. What makes the picture an even more compelling find is that several art experts said it was created by the photography studio of Mathew Brady, a famous 19th-century photographer known for his portraits of historical figures such as President Abraham Lincoln and Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. Stapp said the photo was probably not taken by Brady himself but by Timothy O'Sullivan, one of Brady's apprentices. O'Sullivan took a multitude of photos depicting the carnage of the Civil War. In 1862, O'Sullivan famously photographed a group of some of the first slaves liberated after Lincoln issued his preliminary Emancipation Proclamation. Such photos were circulated in the North by abolitionists to garner support for the Union during the Civil War , said Harold Holzer, an author of several books about Lincoln. Holzer works as an administrator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Most of the photos depicted adult slaves who had been beaten or whipped, he said. The photo of the two boys is more subtle, Holzer said, which may be why it wasn't widely circulated and remained unpublished for so long. To me, it's such a moving and astonishing picture, he said. Ron Soodalter, an author and member of the board of directors at the Abraham Lincoln Institute in Washington, D.C., said the photo depicts the reality of slavery. I think this picture shows that the institution of slavery didn't pick or choose, said Soodalter, who has written several books on historic and modern slavery. This was a generic horror. It victimized the old, the young. For now, Morgan said, he is keeping the photo in his personal collection, but he said he has had an inquiry to sell the photo to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He said he is considering participating in the creation of a video documentary about John. This kid was abused and mistreated and people forgot about him, Morgan said. He doesn't even exist in history. And to know that there were a million children who were like him. I've never seen another photo like that that speaks so much for children.
