[scifinoir2] Solomon Kane

2010-06-11 Thread Mr. Worf
What is it about? Solomon Kane is a fictional character created by the
pulp-era writer Robert E. Howard. He wonders the world hunting down and
fighting evil, which is much like several other characters in the fiction
universe. It is easy to compare Solomon Kane to Van Helsing but that would
be very wrong to do so. Solomon Kane’s character was first published in
Weird Tales in 1928. While the Gabriel Van Helsing character did not exist
until the Van Helsing movie that was released in 2004. The name Gabriel Van
Helsing did not exist in Bram Stroker’s Dracula and was changed from the
original name of Abraham Van Helsing by the makers of the Van Helsing film
to take away Universal Studio’s copyright access to the character. Although
there were several films about Abraham Van Helsing, they were more about a
more “modern scientific man” that was fighting evil.

In this movie, Solomon after storming a castle finds himself face to face
with evil. He escapes and joins a monastery. Over time, evil is slowly
taking over the country. Solomon is asked to leave the monastery. After
wandering the roads, he finds himself in the middle of the fight between
good and evil.

James Purefoy playing the double sword wielding Solomon does a good job in
the action scenes often against numerous bald baddies. The fight scenes are
filled with action are fun to watch without being overly gory. (It is only
PG13)

Some of the reviews compare it to Van Helsing or Lord of the Rings but it
is a different story. The script and acting were fairly decent. Much better
than a syfy channel production and has a much higher budget. They actually
use castles and dungeons in the Czech Republic and UK for a more authentic
look. There are several scenes where you can see the beauty of several
hundred-year-old stone. The walls and dungeons look so real that they are
beautiful. One thing that I liked about the film is that It was not drowning
in CGI effects, which gives it a slightly more gritty and realistic, feel to
it. What little of CGI that was used was done well.

A couple of the bad things in the film is that it is somewhat predictable in
some areas. They could have taken more time to explain the magic that was
being used and the evil force that exists in the film. Also, there was time
to show the conflict between good/evil, witchcraft/Christianity,
Paganism/Christianity that was passed up. The film has some minor flaws but
I think that overall it was executed well.

Do not let some of the bad reviews stop you from checking out this film. It
is a decent hero flick for a PG13 movie.

I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Rated PG13

San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris has been dealing with a storm
of bad publicity lately, with revelations that her office’s felony trial
conviction rates have dropped
precipitouslyhttp://www.sfweekly.com/2010-05-05/news/a-lack-of-conviction/and
that local
prosecutors’ failure to disclose police officers’ criminal
backgroundshttp://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2010/05/04/MNJ71CTL6A.DTLcould
jeopardize past convictions.
But Harris now has one big feather to stick in her cap as she campaigns to
be the state’s next attorney general: An endorsement from supermodel turned
talk-show host Tyra Banks http://tyrashow.warnerbros.com/. In the May
issue of — what else? — the online magazine *Tyra*

praises the D.A. http://www.tyra.com/view/TYRA_KAMALA_HARRIS as “such a
kind women [sic]” and touts, among other qualities, “her passion for the

In April, the photo was found at a moving sale in Charlotte, accompanied by
a document detailing the sale of John for $1,150, not a small sum in 1854.

New York collector Keya Morgan said he paid $30,000 for the photo album
including the photo of the young boys and several family pictures and
$20,000 for the sale document. Morgan said the deceased owner of the home
where the photo was found was thought to be a descendant of John.

A portrait of slave children is rare, Morgan said.

I buy stuff all the time, but this shocked me, he said.

What makes the picture an even more compelling find is that several art
experts said it was created by the photography studio of Mathew Brady, a
famous 19th-century photographer known for his portraits of historical
 figures such as President Abraham
 Lincolnhttp://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100611/ap_on_re_us/us_slavery_photo_5#and
  Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee.

Stapp said the photo was probably not taken by Brady himself but by Timothy
O'Sullivan, one of Brady's apprentices. O'Sullivan took a multitude of
photos depicting the carnage of the Civil War.

In 1862, O'Sullivan famously photographed a group of some of the first
slaves liberated after Lincoln issued his preliminary Emancipation
 Proclamation.

Such photos were circulated in the North by abolitionists to garner support
for the Union during the Civil
 Warhttp://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100611/ap_on_re_us/us_slavery_photo_5#,
said Harold Holzer, an author of several books about Lincoln. Holzer works
as an administrator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Most of the photos depicted adult slaves who had been beaten or whipped, he
 said.

The photo of the two boys is more subtle, Holzer said, which may be why it
wasn't widely circulated and remained unpublished for so long.

To me, it's such a moving and astonishing picture, he said.

Ron Soodalter, an author and member of the board of directors at the
Abraham Lincoln Institute in Washington, D.C., said the photo depicts the
 reality of slavery.

I think this picture shows that the institution of
 slaveryhttp://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100611/ap_on_re_us/us_slavery_photo_5#didn't
pick or choose, said Soodalter, who has written several books on
historic and modern slavery. This was a generic horror. It victimized the
 old, the young.

For now, Morgan said, he is keeping the photo in his personal collection,
but he said he has had an inquiry to sell the photo to the Metropolitan
Museum of Art. He said he is considering participating

Actor Kevin Costner told Congress on Wednesday that he has a solution to
ocean oil spills: a machine that separates oil from water.
Costner said he has spent more than $20 million for the patent and
development of the machines since 1993 because he was inspired by the
 Exxon-Valdez oil spill in 1989.

There's been some question as to why I'm here, Costner told the House
Energy and Environment subcommittee. I want to assure everyone here it's
not because I heard a voice in a cornfield, a reference to Field of Dreams.
In that 1989 film, Costner played the role of a farmer who turned his
 cornfield into a baseball field.

The machines — marketed by Ocean Therapy Solutions — are like vacuum
cleaners that suck up the oily water and separate the pollutants through a
 centrifuge.

BP recently put in an order for 32 of the machines to help clean up the
Gulf of Mexico, according to Ocean Therapy Solutions CEO John Houghtaling,
who said the 32 machines could process 6 million gallons of water a day.

Some of the reviews compare it to Van Helsing or Lord of the Rings but

better than a syfy channel production and has a much higher budget. They
actually use castles and dungeons in the Czech Republic and UK for a more
authentic look. There are several scenes where you can see the beauty of
several hundred-year-old stone. The walls and dungeons look so real that
they are beautiful. One thing that I liked about the film is that It was not
drowning in CGI effects, which gives it a slightly more gritty and
realistic, feel to it. What little of CGI that was used was done well.

A couple of the bad things in the film is that it is somewhat predictable
in some areas. They could have taken more time to explain the magic that was
being used and the evil force that exists in the film. Also, there was time
to show the conflict between good/evil, witchcraft/Christianity,
Paganism/Christianity that was passed up. The film has some minor flaws but
I think that overall it was executed well.

What's with kids and all these death-defying stunts?
Thu Jun 10,2010 12:00 PM ET By Rick
 Chandlerhttp://outofbounds.nbcsports.com/rick-chandler

It's the Year of Living Dangerously for kids, for sure. Every time I look
up it seems some youngster is attempting a death-defying feat of some sort,
with mom and dad's permission. In the past couple of weeks we've told you
 about Jordan
 Romerohttp://outofbounds.nbcsports.com/2010/05/post-531.html.php,
who at 13 became the youngest person ever to summit Mt. Everest. Then
there's 12-year-old Mexican bullfighter Michelito Lagravere, who has
 already been gored
 twicehttp://outofbounds.nbcsports.com/2010/06/post-578.html.php;
 the latest on Sunday.

Now, Abby Sunderland, who at 16 was attempting to become the youngest
sailor to circumnavigate the globe, may be lost at sea. Her crew has lost
contact with her, and two emergency beacons have been activated on her boat.

Abby's mother, MaryAnne Sunderland, told ABC News that Abby manually
activated two beacons around 6 a.m. Pacific Time Thursday.

Abby was in 20-25 foot waves at the time of last contact, with 35-knot
winds, said MaryAnne Sunderland, who is due to give birth at the end of the
month. She was shaken but focused on trying to get a rescue effort together.

The closest land to Abby's boat was Reunion Island, which is east of
Madagascar. The nearest ship was 400 miles away. Rescuers were trying to
 contact the ship.

I don't pretend to understand the mindset that these parents have to allow
their children to so blatantly court disaster. The common thread here seems
to be that the adults want their children to live their dreams, but
besides the obvious danger involved, there's such a thing as peaking too
early. So you've sailed the globe solo, or just climbed Mr. Everest, all
before your high school prom. What do you do for an encore?

Today, my eight-year-old son will strap himself to a rocket, which is
pointed at the moon. I see no way this can and badly. Live your dream,
young man. And bring a warm coat.

At least the Balloon Boy dad had enough sense to fake the whole thing; his
son rode out his adventure safely, in a box in the attic. And yet *he's*is
the parent who did jail time.

And now this January post from the blog
 Californalityhttp://www.californiality.com/2010/01/california-girl-sailing-world-alone.htmlhas
  a real tinge of sadness:

Living in the same community as Abby does, I first heard of her plan to
sail around the world a while back. My first reaction to her plan was
surprise and concern. She's such a young girl. I know that probably sounds
gender-biased, but sorry. The rest of the world is not sunny Southern
California. What about bandits, the cartel and pirates?

I heard Abby saying that she knows God will totally protect her. She was
very serious and meant it. Her family shares her conviction.

Abby was approximately 500 miles north of the Antarctic Islands when her
crew lost contact with her. She began the trip from Marina del Rey in
southern California on Feb. 19, with the latest leg completed this past
Tuesday (South Africa to North of the Kerguelen Islands -- 2,100 miles).
 She's
been blogging about the journey on her web
 sitehttp://soloround.blogspot.com/2010/06/rough-few-days.html,
with the latest entry put up this morning.

Her older brother, Zac Sunderland, completed the trip in 2009.

Some of the reviews compare it to Van Helsing or Lord of the Rings but

better than a syfy channel production and has a much higher budget. They
actually use castles and dungeons in the Czech Republic and UK for a more

several hundred-year-old stone. The walls and dungeons look so real that

A couple of the bad things in the film is that it is somewhat
predictable in some areas. They could have taken more time to explain the
magic that was being used and the evil force that exists in the film. Also,
there was time to show the conflict between good/evil,
witchcraft/Christianity, Paganism/Christianity that was passed up. The film
has some minor flaws but I think that overall it was executed well.

Do not let some of the bad reviews stop you from checking out this film.

In the past couple of weeks we've told
 you about Jordan
 Romerohttp://outofbounds.nbcsports.com/2010/05/post-531.html.php,
who at 13 became the youngest person ever to summit Mt. Everest. Then
there's 12-year-old Mexican bullfighter Michelito Lagravere, who has
 already been gored
 twicehttp://outofbounds.nbcsports.com/2010/06/post-578.html.php;
 the latest on Sunday.

I don't pretend to understand the mindset that these parents have to
allow their children to so blatantly court disaster. The common thread here
seems to be that the adults want their children to live their dreams, but
besides the obvious danger involved, there's such a thing as peaking too

 At least the Balloon Boy dad had enough sense to fake the whole thing;
his son rode out his adventure safely, in a box in the attic. And yet *
he's* is the parent who did jail time.

What's with kids and all these death-defying stunts?
Thu Jun 10,2010 12:00 PM ET By Rick
 Chandlerhttp://outofbounds.nbcsports.com/rick-chandler

It's the Year of Living Dangerously for kids, for sure. Every time I
look up it seems some youngster is attempting a death-defying feat of some
sort, with mom and dad's permission. In the past couple of weeks we've
 told you about Jordan
 Romerohttp://outofbounds.nbcsports.com/2010/05/post-531.html.php,
who at 13 became the youngest person ever to summit Mt. Everest. Then
there's 12-year-old Mexican bullfighter Michelito Lagravere, who has
 already been gored
 twicehttp://outofbounds.nbcsports.com/2010/06/post-578.html.php;
 the latest on Sunday.

Now, Abby Sunderland, who at 16 was attempting to become the youngest
sailor to circumnavigate the globe, may be lost at sea. Her crew has lost
contact with her, and two emergency beacons have been activated on her
 boat.

Abby's mother, MaryAnne Sunderland, told ABC News that Abby manually
activated two beacons around 6 a.m. Pacific Time Thursday.

Abby was in 20-25 foot waves at the time of last contact, with 35-knot
winds, said MaryAnne Sunderland, who is due to give birth at the end of the
month. She was shaken but focused on trying to get a rescue effort
 together.

The closest land to Abby's boat was Reunion Island, which is east of
Madagascar. The nearest ship was 400 miles away. Rescuers were trying to
 contact the ship.

I don't pretend to understand the mindset that these parents have to
allow their children to so blatantly court disaster. The common thread here
seems to be that the adults want their children to live their dreams, but
besides the obvious danger involved, there's such a thing as peaking too

 At least the Balloon Boy dad had enough sense to fake the whole thing;
his son rode out his adventure safely, in a box in the attic. And yet *
he's* is the parent who did jail time.

 She's
been blogging about the journey on her web

fighting evil, which is much like several other characters in the fiction
universe. It is easy to compare Solomon Kane to Van Helsing but that
 would
be very wrong to do so. Solomon Kane’s character was first published in
Weird Tales in 1928. While the Gabriel Van Helsing character did not
 exist
until the Van Helsing movie that was released in 2004. The name Gabriel
 Van
Helsing did not exist in Bram Stroker’s Dracula and was changed from the
original name of Abraham Van Helsing by the makers of the Van Helsing
 film
to take away Universal Studio’s copyright access to the character.
 Although
there were several films about Abraham Van Helsing, they were more about
 a
more “modern scientific man” that was fighting evil.

In this movie, Solomon after storming a castle finds himself face to
face with evil. He escapes and joins a monastery. Over time, evil is
 slowly
taking over the country. Solomon is asked to leave the monastery. After
wandering the roads, he finds himself in the middle of the fight between
 good and evil.

James Purefoy playing the double sword wielding Solomon does a good
job in the action scenes often against numerous bald baddies. The
fight scenes are filled with action are fun to watch without being overly
 gory. (It is only PG13)

Some of the reviews compare it to Van Helsing or Lord of the Rings
but it is a different story. The script and acting were fairly decent.
 Much
better than a syfy channel production and has a much higher budget. They
actually use castles and dungeons in the Czech Republic and UK for a more
authentic look. There are several scenes where you can see the beauty of
several hundred-year-old stone. The walls and dungeons look so real that
they are beautiful. One thing that I liked about the film is that It was
 not
drowning in CGI effects, which gives it a slightly more gritty and
realistic, feel to it. What little of CGI that was used was done well.

The
 film
has some minor flaws but I think that overall it was executed well.

Do not let some of the bad reviews stop you from checking out this
film. It is a decent hero flick for a PG13 movie.

I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars.

 Rated PG13

Amen. Van Helsing made Hugh Jackman look as if he was a one-note screen actor

[scifinoir2] Still Watching Stargate SGU?

2010-06-11 Thread Keith Johnson

SyFy is running an SGU marathon, leading up to the 9 pm EST season finale.
Anyone still watching this series? I am really liking it. It has a very obvious
BSG influence with the darker tone, morally complex individuals, and lack of
abundant standard fight-the-evil-aliens stories.  But it's a different show,
with its own course, and I'm enjoying it. Good characterrss--some of the best I
can't even stand--and dialogue that's a cut above SG-1 and Atlantis standards.
In fact, I can't think of any recent series where the latest incarnation
differs so much from its predecessors.  Typically we have things like CSI, Law
and Order, NCIS, which are all more similar than not.  The same for Star Trek,
though DS9 ventured more afield than most. But SGU is so different from
Atlantis and SG1, it almost doesn't seem to belong in the same family. Even
when they bring in characters from SG-1--like Daniel Jackson and Jack
O'Neill--the characters are much more serious than they were in the main.

Good stuff.

Agreed, they just need to tweak the wrting a bit. Like I said, the latter part
of it got too stupid and left the reality even the world already crafted.  I'd
also love to see a return of Undercover Brother. I loved that movie with its
satirical points. Eddie Griffin was great in the role. For some reason, though,
few blacks loved it as much as I did.

Re: [scifinoir2] Still Watching Stargate SGU?

2010-06-11 Thread Keith Johnson

If I'm up at 1 am, I'll watch Highlander, which SyFy runs at that time. That
was one of my fav shows of the latest several years. Many of the stories were
very good. They're currently in the last couple of seasons, when Ritchie was an
Immortal, Methos has been introduced, and they (finally!) started brining in
some female Immortals who are great fighters in their own right.

I just don't get why they consign a great show like that--and X-Files, which
follows at 2 am--to the wee hours, while putting out crap like Ghost Hunters,
wrestling, and crappy movies in primetime. Oh wait: I do know why. I just don't
like it.

[scifinoir2] Asking for Movie Suggestions

2010-06-11 Thread Keith Johnson

Any recommendations on which of the  big summer movies are worth seeing?

Have any of you seen Prince of Persia, Robin Hood,  A-Team, Karate Kid, Splice,
Killers, Shrek, Get Him to the Greek

With the summer blockbuster season here, we're inundated with all the
next-big-things at the box office: all the CGI- and action-heavy movies .
Typically I start to burn out after a while, as so many of them nowadays seem
to be mediocre films based mostly on explosions, fights, and FX.  Iron Man 2
was okay, but a bit of a disappointment.  I need to watch the money I spend at
the cinema, so don't want to plop down my six bucks for something that I can
wait for on DVD. And there are some indie films like Mother and Child and
Kings of the Evening that I'd rather see, since they actually rely on plots
and good acting.

You have touched on one my biggest pet peeves with hollywood. They always
have to use the most well known actors for the role. That doesn't mean
that the actor is the best for the part though. The pool is too shallow to
keep drawing from but they make us suffer through it anyway.

Re: [scifinoir2] 'Thor' Set Visit Gives First Look at Anthony Hopkins in a Future Eye Patch

2010-06-11 Thread Keith Johnson

Right. And what's funniest is it gets worse when an unknown is cast in a
movie. Because the dude play Thor/Blake isn't a famous actor, they probably
freaked out and said we need an 'A-list' star to play Odin.  Right. Just make
a good movie--and with Branagh directing, the chances are good--and get good
actors, famous or not. It reminds me of how Marlon Brando was given the role of
Jor-El in the first Superman flick, because the studio wanted name recognition.
They had to pay him a huge salary for that time, he only had a few minutes
onscreen, and on top of that, he didn't bother to memorize his few lines, so
they had to use que cards offscreen.

All that, and the movie would have succeeded without him.

At least in this case Hopkins is of the same or similar ethnicity. I really
felt casting him as a Spaniard in Zorro was insulting and offensive beyond
measure.  I love Catherine Zeta-Jones, but her cast as a Spanish lady was also
silly.

This is why I get irritated when people discuss things like the best actor for
the next Batman flick, and they cycle through the same old people. It's why I
keep rejecting choices like Jolie and Depp. They're great actors, but sometimes
I want unknowns or lesser-knowns who have just as much talent, and whose
performances are easier to lose myself in, absent the baggage of their
celebrity. For example, Heath Ledger was a well known star, but not
super-duper, and he *killed* as Joker. Same with Aaron Eckhart as
Dent/Two-Face. Not a big name star, but damn good.

You have touched on one my biggest pet peeves with hollywood. They always have
to use the most well known actors for the role. That doesn't mean that the
actor is the best for the part though. The pool is too shallow to keep drawing
from but they make us suffer through it anyway.

I am really liking it, and this whole thing with the Lucian Alliance boarding
Destiny is pretty exciting. I must say, Rhona Mitra does the
tool-cool-for-school villain role very well. Although, I had to chuckle at how
she and all her fellow would-be conquerors are sporting expensive black leather
gard--that always makes the bad guys badder in film.  But that aside, at least
in this way, Mitra has a cool and deadly air that reminds me of Angelina Jolie.
And like Jolie--who, after the second Tomb Raider movie, I felt really needed a
movie as a spy--I think Mitra would be well served if someone could write a
role for her as a spy or assassin.

[scifinoir2] Teen Sailor's Father Defends Her Attempt

2010-06-11 Thread Keith Johnson

Interesting. The father says that people who don't get him letting the girl do
this are basically afraid of living life to its fullest. I like the analogy
that it's no different than letting teens drive cars.  I will say, once you
think of the time and money spent on aircraft having to fly thousands of miles,
retrieve the boat, etc., it puts it in even better perspective.

[AP News]

LOS ANGELES — What were her parents thinking? Many people were asking that
question as a 16-year-old girl sat adrift and alone in the frigid southern
Indian Ocean, her ship's mast dashed along with her around-the-world sailing
effort.

Abby Sunderland's ship was rolling in 20- to 30-foot waves as she waited to be
rescued by a boat that was expected to arrive early Saturday morning Pacific
time.

She set off a distress signal Thursday after rough seas disabled her ship and
her satellite phone reception. There were 20 hours of tense silence before a
search plane launched from Australia's west coast made brief radio contact with
Sunderland and found her alive and well Friday morning.

The aircraft (crew) spoke to her. They told her help was on the way and she
sounds like she's in good health, said Mick Kinley, acting chief of the
Australia Maritime Safety Authority, which chartered a commercial jet for the
search.

She's going to hang in there until a vessel can get to her, Kinley told
reporters in Canberra.

Many people criticized Sunderland's parents for allowing the high-risk
adventure, one of several by young people looking to make the record books.
Some veteran sailors said it's all but irresponsible to send a teenager off
alone in a small boat, knowing it will be tossed about like a toy for 30 or
more hours at a time by the giant waves that rake the Southern Hemisphere's
oceans this time of year.

In Abby's case she was lucky, said Derrick Fries, a world sailing champion
and author of the standard instruction manual Learn to Sail. It's only a
matter of time until we end up with a tragedy on our hands.

Sunderland's family defends her trek, saying that as a lifelong sailor she was
as well prepared for the journey as anyone could be. Her brother successfully
circled the globe last year when he was about the same age.
CBS News: Was Abby Too Young to Sail?
Sailing and life in general is dangerous, her father, Laurence, told The
Associated Press. Teenagers drive cars. Does that mean teenagers shouldn't
drive a car? I think people who hold that opinion have lost their zeal for
life. They're living in a cotton-wool tunnel to make everything safe.

The driving analogy didn't impress many parents who lit up Internet message
boards with criticism. One, Tammy Davis of Makanda, Ill., said in a subsequent
interview there's no comparison between a car breaking down in a city and a
person being trapped alone in the ocean.

My 21-year-old son runs triathlons for the University of Illinois, Davis
said. Would I want him to run triathlons alone? No.

Abby Sunderland set sail from Los Angeles County's Marina del Rey in her boat,
Wild Eyes, on Jan. 23, trying to become the youngest person to circumnavigate
the globe solo. Her brother, Zac, held the record for a little more than a
month last year until Briton Mike Perham completed his own journey. The record
changed hands again last month, when 16-year-old Australian Jessica Watson
completed her own around-the-world sail.

Sunderland, whose father is a shipwright and has a yacht management company,
ran into equipment problems and had to stop for repairs soon after beginning
her journey. She gave up the goal of setting the record in April, but
continued, hoping to complete the journey.

Laurence Sunderland said Friday that he gave her the option of bowing out at
that point in her trek.

I said, 'This isn't about media. It's about a passion and a love for the sport
of sailing,' he said. Her words to me was, 'Dad, I know what I'm capable of.
I know what this vessel is capable of and I'd like to continue.

In the Indian Ocean, Sunderland had made several broken calls to her family in
Thousand Oaks, reporting her yacht was being tossed by 30-foot (9-meter) waves
— as tall as a 3-story building. An hour after her last call ended Thursday,
her emergency beacons began signaling.

She was contacted by rescuers in a chartered Qantas Airbus A330 jet that made a
4,700-mile (7,600-kilometer) round trip from Perth to Sunderland's boat, which
is near the limit of its range.

They spotted Sunderland on the back deck of her boat. Its mast had been broken,
knocking out satellite communications. Its sail was dragging in the water but
Sunderland appeared to be in good shape. Kinley said the keel was intact, the
yacht was not taking on water and Sunderland was equipped for the conditions.

She told searchers Friday that she was doing fine with a space heater and at

Many people criticized Sunderland's parents for allowing the high-risk
adventure, one of several by young people looking to make the record books.
Some veteran sailors said it's all but irresponsible to send a teenager off
alone in a small boat, knowing it will be tossed about like a toy for 30 or
more hours at a time by the giant waves that rake the Southern Hemisphere's
 oceans this time of year.

In Abby's case she was lucky, said Derrick Fries, a world sailing
champion and author of the standard instruction manual Learn to Sail.
It's only a matter of time until we end up with a tragedy on our hands.

Sunderland's family defends her trek, saying that as a lifelong sailor she
was as well prepared for the journey as anyone could be. Her brother
successfully circled the globe last year when he was about the same age.
CBS News: Was Abby Too Young to Sail?Sailing and life in general is
dangerous, her father, Laurence, told The Associated Press. Teenagers
drive cars. Does that mean teenagers shouldn't drive a car? I think people
who hold that opinion have lost their zeal for life. They're living in a
cotton-wool tunnel to make everything safe.

The driving analogy didn't impress many parents who lit up Internet message
boards with criticism. One, Tammy Davis of Makanda, Ill., said in a
subsequent interview there's no comparison between a car breaking down in a
city and a person being trapped alone in the ocean.

My 21-year-old son runs triathlons for the University of Illinois, Davis
said. Would I want him to run triathlons alone? No.

Abby Sunderland set sail from Los Angeles County's Marina del Rey in her
boat, Wild Eyes, on Jan. 23, trying to become the youngest person to
circumnavigate the globe solo. Her brother, Zac, held the record for a
little more than a month last year until Briton Mike Perham completed his
own journey. The record changed hands again last month, when 16-year-old
Australian Jessica Watson completed her own around-the-world sail.

Sunderland, whose father is a shipwright and has a yacht management
company, ran into equipment problems and had to stop for repairs soon after
beginning her journey. She gave up the goal of setting the record in April,
but continued, hoping to complete the journey.

Laurence Sunderland said Friday that he gave her the option of bowing out
at that point in her trek.

I said, 'This isn't about media. It's about a passion and a love for the
sport of sailing,' he said. Her words to me was, 'Dad, I know what I'm
capable of. I know what this vessel is capable of and I'd like to continue.

In the Indian Ocean, Sunderland had made several broken calls to her family
in Thousand Oaks, reporting her yacht was being tossed by 30-foot (9-meter)
waves — as tall as a 3-story building. An hour after her last call ended
Thursday, her emergency beacons began signaling.

She was contacted by rescuers in a chartered Qantas Airbus A330 jet that
made a 4,700-mile (7,600-kilometer) round trip from Perth to Sunderland's
boat, which is near the limit of its range.

They spotted Sunderland on the back deck of her boat. Its mast had been
broken, knocking out satellite communications. Its sail was dragging in the
water but Sunderland appeared to be in good shape. Kinley said the keel was
intact, the yacht was not taking on water and Sunderland was equipped for
