Re: [scifinoir2] Re: Dr. Who finale

2010-08-08 Thread Mr. Worf
Does anyone get the feeling that Amy Pond knows too much? She answers a lot
of questions before the doctor does. I don't think that is a coincidence.

Also, what about the doctor's former roommate? Allowing someone to share his
information could be a dangerous thing.

They haven't aired that episode yet. I am still hoping that he just thinks
that he is.

A couple of years ago there was a guy that worked for the LA Times that did
a DNA background check to get his heritage and discovered that he wasn't
black. Although he had dark skin, nappy hair and all of his relatives
thought that they were black as well they were not black at all.

I have a branch of family on my father's side that has been passing for
Portugese for the last 30+ years.

So Niven's Ringworld really wasn't doing it for me. Moved on to a basic
classic: Asimov's first book, "A Pebble in the Sky." I read like the first 60
pages just yesterday. How do folks think it will compare to his late works
like Foundation, etc.?

2010-08-08 Thread angelababycat
Who was it (Martin?) that said you dance with the Doctor who brought you to the
party? Tenant was my favorite because I never watched DW regularly until I
joined this group last year and noticed all the buzz about show...taped all the
eps in the 2-day New Years marathon, so that's what I know. Martha was a
little love-struck, but is still my fav companion, and Donna would be 2nd
because she had the tough sensibillity of a mature woman. The current Dr.
doesn't do much for me and neither does Amy Pond. Maybe I'll just be one of
those one-doctor Dr. Who fans, but I'll stick with it for now.

If you like River Song, Alex plays the character very similarly to her role in
Moll Flanders, which was on PBS, BBC or something in the mid 90's. It must be
the type of character she likes best, because I never really got into any of
her other roles.

[scifinoir2] STAR WARS CONQUERS THE SUBWAY

2010-08-08 Thread Mr. Worf
The creative team at Improv Everywhere came up with an idea of a unique and
crazy Star Wars costume show in New York Subway. They got a team together of
4 men and 1 woman and dressed them up as characters from the famous Star
Wars series. The woman is dressed as Princess Leia Organa, while one of the
men is dressed as Darth Vader. The other three are dressed as minions of
Darth Vader.

[image: Star Wars subway costumes

We see photographs of them entering the subway and dressing up for their
parts. Then we are shown Princess Leia, in her trademark ‘Cinnamon Bun’
hairstyle, riding the subway. Funnily, she is shown reading a book called
‘Galactic Rebellion for Dummies’. In the next few pictures, we see her
being captured by the minions of Darth Vader and then Darth Vader himself
makes an appearance. As seen in the pictures, there is no doubt that other
travelers on the Subway are deeply amused by this show.

It depends on how you look at it. Japan doesn't have PETA or the same
viewpoint on animals that we do. Food is food. It exists so that you may
live. If you've ever eaten jello, gummy bears, or marshmallows, gelatin is
made from pig bone marrow and other left over parts including the placenta.

Re: [scifinoir2] Dr. Who finale

2010-08-08 Thread Sammie A
Keith,

i did like the marriage aspect of Martha and Mickey.especially after Mickey
came back from the parallel Earth and was a little bit more gritty.  it was
time 4 him 2 grow up.

on a side note:
has anyone watched this show:  Rubicon?  it comes on 2nite, and b4 i record it
and go back and watch the first couple on OnDemand.  is it worth it?

Fate.

Was the original concept of the Doctor always intended to be this, that
the character would change so new actors could bring different aspects of his
personality to the fore? I ask because it's always a fascinating discussion to
see which Doctor we like--which says more about us than the Doctor. For
example, I still prefer Eccleston for the very reasons you mentioned: he was
tough (I'd say, rather than "rough"), world and war-weary, but trying to shake
off his ghosts. For some reason I really liked that. Tennant was great, but I
liked Eccleston's hard edge better.
And I like Donna more than Martha because Donna was tougher, giving as good as
the Doctor gave. Martha to me was way too much of  a lovestruck puppy, and
seemed to have fallen for the Doctor too hard and too fast. Something about
that irritated me. I like that Donna would call his BS in a second. I am glad,
though, that at Tennant's "death", they revealed that Martha married Mickey,
who had been too long cuckolded by on again/off again girlfriend Rose Tyler's
love for the Doctor.

I agree with everyone on this one.  Matt is still kind of lost 2 me (i
think it's the long face and the too much, too big hair).  River Song is simply
delicious!  Cannot wait on the ep where the Doctor finally knows her, knows
her. . ..and of course how she is going 2 kill him.  Must say,
I really miss David Tennant.  Wasn't really crazy about Christopher
Eccleston... .he was like Timothy Dalton's James Bond (not suave, but
rough)...Eccleston was not really smarty, but rough.  Tennant embraced the
'whiz kid' role perfectly.  Kind of like Tom Baker (the 4th doctor) did back in
my formative youth days.  As for companions, Amy Pond is soo much
better to me than that hideous Donna Noble (Catherine Tate).  Still say my
favorite companion is/was Martha Jones (Freeman Agyeman), but that's just my
 opinion.

Fate.

The last 6 esp. did get much better but overall not the best season of
DW. I'm more interested in River Song's adventures and I think she is stealing
the show from Matt Smith. I'm slightly hoping to do a spin off show for River
Song cause she is fun. She is going to eventually kill the Dr. but I think they
will give Matt Smith another season before they need to find a new Dr.

Was excellent. Not a huge fan of the new doctor, but his Amy Pond is a well
thought out, very interesting character, and the finale was spectacular

I just finished watching the penultimate and season finale of the new Dr.
Who. "The Pandorica Opens" is one of my favorite Dr. Who episodes ever - I
love the way it and the succeeding episode tie up most of the easter eggs
scattered since "The Raggedy Doctor" episode.

"The League of Evil" banning together to save humanity is good stuff!

And Alex Kingston is priceless as Dr. River Song. I have never been an Alex
Kingston fan, but this is a perfect melding of actress and role.

The Sophie Okonedo cameo as Liz Ten (Queen Elizabeth the Tenth, for you scoring
at home) is a welcome surprise.

It is a sincere sensation to see a sci-fi arc that was actually pre-planned,
well thought out and well executed (as opposed to how "X-Files" and "Lost" did
it - just to name two).

All this and a two-thousand year love story.

I loved it.

Re: [scifinoir2] Dr. Who finale

2010-08-08 Thread Keith Johnson
Was the original concept of the Doctor always intended to be this, that the
character would change so new actors could bring different aspects of his
personality to the fore?

Matt is still kind of lost 2 me (i think
it's the long face and the too much, too big hair). River Song is simply
delicious! Cannot wait on the ep where the Doctor finally knows her, knows
herand of course how she is going 2 kill him. Must say, I
really miss David Tennant. Wasn't really crazy about Christopher
Ecclestonhe was like Timothy Dalton's James Bond (not suave, but
rough)...Eccleston was not really smarty, but rough. Tennant embraced the 'whiz
kid' role perfectly. Kind of like Tom Baker (the 4th doctor) did back in my
formative youth days. As for companions, Amy Pond is soo much
better to me than that hideous Donna Noble (Catherine Tate). Still say my
favorite companion is/was Martha Jones (Freeman Agyeman), but that's just my
opinion.

The last 6 esp. did get much better but overall not the best season of DW. I'm
more interested in River Song's adventures and I think she is stealing the show
from Matt Smith. I'm slightly hoping to do a spin off show for River Song cause
she is fun. She is going to eventually kill the Dr. but I think they will give
Matt Smith another season before they need to find a new Dr.

Re: [scifinoir2] A Picture gallery of robots

2010-08-08 Thread Mr. Worf
The military bots are probably going to be the biggest problem in the
future. All it will take is a sentient bot with a bomb and enough range to
do some damage. (add to that terrorists)

I am reading 3010 right now and there was a small section on the necessity
of Human / Bot relations. How not to make your bot upset etc. will become
very important in the future.

Well hopefully by that point we will have solved that issue with more rules.

One of the concepts I read about was just making task specific bots. Like a
domestic bot, and a maintenance bot. Creating all purpose do everything bots
may cause problems.

Good question! It depends on how repressed that they are. In one of the
articles I read about interaction with robots, someone suggested that they
program it so that the robots receive pleasure from doing their tasks. This
way they will enjoy the work that they are doing.

I think that with the advent of the laws of computing they may assist us
in creating sentient machines that will not plan to take over the world.

You can make copies of a barcode and give them to your friends. They don't
check id if you have the code so technically you can have multiple people
using the same barcode for entry.

The last 6 esp. did get much better but overall not the best season of DW.
I'm more interested in River Song's adventures and I think she is stealing
the show from Matt Smith. I'm slightly hoping to do a spin off show for
River Song cause she is fun. She is going to eventually kill the Dr. but I
think they will give Matt Smith another season before they need to find a
new Dr.

"The Pandorica Opens" is one of my favorite Dr. Who episodes ever - I love the

It is a sincere sensation to see a sci-fi arc that was actually pre-planned,
well thought out and well executed (as opposed to how "X-Files" and "Lost" did

All this and a two-thousand year love story.

 Movie Review – Ip Man

The movie Ip Man (It sounds funny but they go by last name first in
China) was a surprisingly well-made little martial art film. Partially
 based
on Man Yip the Wing Chun master from Hong Kong, it follows his beginning
from his life in a small town called Fo Shen in the mid 1930s. Fo Shen is
famous for its “Southern” style Kung Fu and has several schools located in
 the heart of the city.

Ip (Played by Donny Yen) is well known in the town for being the
absolute best martial artist in the region, but he does not teach and has
 no
students. Despite his lack of a school, he is heavily involved in the Kung
Fu social scene and is often challenged by teachers attempting to make a
name for themselves. This is totally against his wife’s wishes. So despite
Ip’s daily training, and his prime skill his wife would much rather have
 him
go into business with Ip’s brother a subdued businessman. Soon, a
baddie from the north appears with several men. He asks for the location of
the Kung Fu schools and challenges every teacher on the block. It is
not long before he hears about Ip and sets out to finds him.

There is much more to the movie that I will not give away, but I must
say that this film is on par with the old styled kick/punch Kung Fu movies
that were made over the years. Very little wire work and great action! I
 highly recommend it!

There is a part 2 to this film that I will also be reviewing as well.

 Directed by: Wilson Yip

Pros: Great believable Kung Fu action. It reminded me of so many Kung Fu
films that I have watched over the years on a Saturday night. The
 historical
 subplot took me by surprise.

Cons: It is a little slow in the middle of the film, but it is
understandable because the film switches modes.

In Cantonese, Chinese, and Japanese with English subtitles

Did you know that they modified it and added a "zero law?"

Here are the updated rules:

*0. A robot may not harm humanity, or, by inaction, allow humanity to come
to harm.
1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human
being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey any orders given to it by human beings, except where
such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does
not conflict with the First or Second Law.*

[scifinoir2] Movie Review – Ip Man

2010-08-08 Thread Mr. Worf
Movie Review – Ip Man

The movie Ip Man (It sounds funny but they go by last name first in China)
was a surprisingly well-made little martial art film. Partially based on Man
Yip the Wing Chun master from Hong Kong, it follows his beginning from his
life in a small town called Fo Shen in the mid 1930s. Fo Shen is famous for
its “Southern” style Kung Fu and has several schools located in the heart of
the city.

Ip (Played by Donny Yen) is well known in the town for being the absolute
best martial artist in the region, but he does not teach and has no
students. Despite his lack of a school, he is heavily involved in the Kung
Fu social scene and is often challenged by teachers attempting to make a
name for themselves. This is totally against his wife’s wishes. So despite
Ip’s daily training, and his prime skill his wife would much rather have him
go into business with Ip’s brother a subdued businessman. Soon, a baddie
from the north appears with several men. He asks for the location of the
Kung Fu schools and challenges every teacher on the block. It is not long
before he hears about Ip and sets out to finds him.

There is much more to the movie that I will not give away, but I must say
that this film is on par with the old styled kick/punch Kung Fu movies that
were made over the years. Very little wire work and great action! I highly
recommend it!

There is a part 2 to this film that I will also be reviewing as well.

Directed by: Wilson Yip

Pros: Great believable Kung Fu action. It reminded me of so many Kung Fu
films that I have watched over the years on a Saturday night. The historical
subplot took me by surprise.

Cons: It is a little slow in the middle of the film, but it is
understandable because the film switches modes.

In Cantonese, Chinese, and Japanese with English subtitles

4 out of 5 stars
