Tired of the so-so, FX-heavy, plot-light summer blockbusters (which
includes Iron Man 2, sadly), I sought solace this past weekend in the indie
movie scene. I went to a small theatre here in Atlanta called Tara, which has
four screens, and shows a lot of fare that doesn't get wide release.  I took my
wife to see Mother and Child. It's an emotional telling of a woman (Anette
Benning) whose life has been all but ruined by a decision to give her child up
for adoption, and the cold and empty life that now adult child (Naomi Watts).
Good movie, deliberately paced, not for the Transformers crowd.

While at the movie, I was intrigued by a trailer for a film called Kings of
the Evening, which was evidently completed last year. It's a Depression -era
drama starring Tyson Beckford, Lynn Whitfield, Glynn Turman, Steven Williams
(star of 21 Jump Street and Linc's), and Lou Myers. The film has earned
accolades at festivals around the country. It's only got limited release: the
Tara in Atlanta this weekend, Chicago, Cincinnati, LA in the upcoming weeks.
Still, looks like it might be worth seeking.

Check the site below for a trailer and actor info:

http://www.kingsoft heevening. com/

After two years in jail, Homer Hobbs (Beckford), returns home during the depths
of the Great Depression. Homer finds a kinship with four strangers as they find
hope, dignity and a chance at a new life: Benny (Dorsey), the eager hustler,
Gracie (Whitfield), the gracious owner of a boarding house, local oddity
Clarence (Turman) and Lucy (Washington) , a young beautiful woman with a
mysterious past.  Each finds comfort with the other and life turns for the
better when on Sunday nights the men of the neighborhood piece together their
finest attire to compete in an unusual contest.  The winner might go home with
the big five dollar prize, but also something priceless...  the chance to feel
like a king, if just for an evening.

speaking of comics, anyone other than me invested in this 'Comic Collectors

yesterday..so u know i re-upped last night too.  it is really great
software.  it sends me email alerts when a new book in ANY title that i am
collecting goes on sale.  i downloaded it on my laptop and immediately took it
2 B'ham to my parents house and unpacked the 2 footlockers that i have there
with my older books in them.  took the time 2 load all of them in the software
and was able 2 see which titles were missing and it even lets u put out a wish
list so that you can trade or purchase missing titles.  if you have a comic
collection like me, and u do not have this software, u might want 2 think about
it.

Celebrate 75 years of DC Comics with an obsessive Fandex Deluxe: a supersized
deck of 75 iconic heroes and villains whose power over the popular imagination
has never been stronger (think The Dark Knight, last summer's $1 billion
blockbuster) .

The gang's all here: Batman, Robin, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, the Green
Lantern, Captain Marvel, Justice League of America, the Flash. So are their
nemeses—the Joker, Catwoman, Mr. Freeze, Lex Luthor, Cheetah, Brainiac, Poison
Ivy, Deathstroke. Meticulously researched, with layers of information covering
origins, biography, back-stories, affiliations, motivations, weaknesses, and
fascinating trivia, the deck adds up to an insider's history of the DC
Universe. And what better way to present it than in the format with super
powers—Fandex and its die-cut cards perfectly capture the characters in one
dynamic pose after another, with the art taken straight from the pages of the
original comics.

From the essential—learn about the Crisis on Infinite Earths—to the
improbable—discover how Lex Luthor became President of the United States—to
the offbeat—did you know that Clark Kent and Lois Lane lived in a building
owned by Wayne (i.e., Batman) Enterprises: it's a handheld feast for
new¬comers and passionate comics fans alike.

I'm sure The Road was discussed when it came out, but I just got around to
seeing it on PPV this weekend.  Maybe the most dark and depressing movie
I've ever seen (or in the top 5 anyway).  Yet the last few
minutes offered a little redeeming hope in a way that was totally unexpected to
me.  I thought it was well done and worth checking out if you don't mind
feeling awful for a little while.  Some how, more than Survivors, Book of

God, would it ever really come to that?

here is my problem, what made Torchwood to me was the interaction of the staff
and the charisma or Capt. Jack.  in the new version, will they get a character
as fun as Capt. Jack?  i also enjoyed Eve Myles character.
Alert!  Alert!  Alert!  o.k. Just checked out EW online and saw that Capt. Jack
(John Barrowman) and Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles) will be joined by new characters.
The only draw back?  I will have 2 subscribe 2 Starz, but that might not be

So Saving Grace wasn't ended based on Holly Hunter's decision?

I don't watch reality TV either. The shows I do watch which deal with real
life are what I like to call documentary . I love Pawn Stars. The gang is
funny as heck, especially the crotchety Old Man, and some of the things people
are pawning are amazing. This is way more than one of those shops that just
trades in jewelry and electronics. They've dealt with hot air balloons,
speedboats, lottery tickets signed by George Washington, 19th century diving
helmets, and even a truly decked out big rig!
I also love The Deadliest Warrior with its exploration of ancient fighting
especially. I'll also glimpse in on Ice Road Truckers or those dudes who are
loggers in mountainous or swamp environs too.

Winkler and great actress Marcia Gay Hayden join the Royal Pains cast.
It's an entertaining show, especially when watched as part of a block of other
good shows on the network. In odd ways, some cable stations like USA and TNT
have almost returned to the old school days when you could count on at least a
three-hour block of good TV programming on a given night. Used to be you could
watch TV from 8 - 11 EST on most nights, and get a variety of good drama and
comedy, no reruns. Reality TV was music/comedy variety shows. Now, even the
major networks are lousy with crappy reality shows, reruns abound, still too
many CSI/Law and Order clones.

But check the cable lineups.

USA:

The Closer, Dark Blue, Hawthorne, Leverage, Memphis Beat (new series with Jason
Lee), Men of a Certain Age,
Rizzoli Isles (new series with Sasha Alexander from NCIS)

TNT:

Burn Notice, White Collar, Psych, Covert Affairs (new series), Royal Pains, The
Closer, Code Blue, In Plain Sight
Franklin Bash

Through in series like Justified and Damages on FX, and you have a lot of
shows on cable that cover drama, humour, action, and shows that are
combinations of all of the above. I enjoy the drama of In Plain Sight, and the
stars' ascerbic personality, the crazy quirkiness of Justified, the light
action of Leverage and Burn Notice, the humor and sometimes uncomfortably close
bite of Men of a Certain Age.Even their reruns  (Charmed, Supernatural, NCIS,
) are more entertaining than a lot of network fare.

Many nights I find myself sitting down and watching blocks of shows on the
cable channels and enjoying myself way more than I do on the major networks.

[scifinoir2] Woman says 3D porno made her pregnant

2010-05-23 Thread Augustus Augustus
Thought u all might find this as funny as I did.

Fate.

An American
woman claims she became pregnant after watching a 3D porno.

US
military man Erick Johnson came home from a stint in Iraq to find that
his wife was pregnant. Clearly he assumed she had an affair, but his
wife Jennifer claims the “other man” was actually someone a little less
physical.

It seems he actually buys her story, however. “I see it
as suspicious. The films in 3D are very real. With today’s technology,
anything is possible,” he said.

What's even more interesting is
that both Jennifer and Erick are white, but the child is black. Jeniffer
claims the kid looks like the black porn star she had been ogling. She
also claims this was one of the first times she's watched porn and only
went with friends for the 3D effect. TechEye did a survey of
one person and found 100 percent would say the same thing in a similar
situation.

“Even though my husband believed in me, my marriage could be at risk,”
Jennifer said. “But he knows I’m faithful.” It just shows you what
joining the military does to your head.

Jennifer explained that
“a month after watching the movie, I started feeling dizzy and the
results were positive.” That must have been one good porno.

3D
movies have gained renewed popularity since Avatar, but there have been
some concerns raised over how bad they may be for your eyes. Now you'll
have to worry about conceiving in the cinema.

You may have
jumped when an object in film was thrown at the camera, but now you'll
have to be careful of other, far more uncouth things flying at you. TechEye
recommends contraception for your next trip to the cinema. You never
know.

also the Thanagarian War 3 parter was good.  the scene in the department store
where they all take off their mask, but Flash is like hey, what about the
whole secret identity thing and Batman points at Superman and says Clark

Right, the premiere ep of Justice League, which i believe was called
Secret Origins. I really loved the early eps because there were so many two-
and three-part ones. I especially enjoyed the introduction of Aquaman, in his
angry, wild-looking phase...the one where some of them went to an alternate
reality that was like some kind of perfect '50s world, with a terrible
secret..and the one where Superman was presumed killed by Toyman. Great stuff.

I think most people have felt the new Doctor will have to win them over.
What was it about Tenant's Doctor you liked better? I think I tend to lean a
bit toward Eccleston. He was darker, edgier, a bit more dangerous, than Tenant.
I believe he's the incarnation that came directly from the Time War? He had a
wounded, bitter edge about him that I found interesting. But I really liked
Tenant too.

Interesting. The bulk of the fan and critical response I've heard so far

listened to a Slice of SciFi podcast recently about it. The crew there had
already seen the first ep, The Eleventh Hour. Doubters all, they really like
the new Doctor.  The fear was that he was too young and would be too boyish and
goofy. However, they were surprised to discover that this new Doctor is more
professorial, more fastidious than Tenant or Eccleston's portrayals. They saw
he looks young, but actually acts old, and reminds them of a throwback to a
couple of the earlier incarnations. I think at least one of them was an older
guy who was a combination of crotchety, deadly serious? (Martin would know).

Our Family Wedding is the latest entry in the Guess Who's Coming to
Dinner oeuvre of awkward interracial mixing and matching. The one constant of
these movies is that the black person is the catch, in many ways more
attractive, gifted and talented than the object of their affection (0kay, Guess
Who's Ashton Kutcher may be prettier than Zoe Saldana, but his character is
also unemployed) and all could, obviously, do better. The on-going conceit is
that the black half of these matches has to be this fabulous just to be
palatable to the ostensibly better family they are marrying into. There may
be a black man in the White House but it remains the same as it was in 1967;
the same as it was in 2005; and the same as it will be in this post-racial
society - allegedly.

Re: [scifinoir2] Clock winds down for '24'

2010-03-18 Thread Augustus Augustus
Martin, Nick of Time was pretty good, but in '24', it takes place in a one day time span. Even with the clock on the screen, it could not be done in 2 hours. It would be like watching one of those time lapse scene's in movies where you see the sun rise and set in about 7 seconds. What makes '24' works for me is that all of the sub-plots that are going on while the main story is unfolding. I think that would be impossible to condense in a 2 hour format. Just my opinion.--- On Sun, 3/14/10, Martin Baxter martinbaxt...@gmail.com wrote:From: Martin Baxter martinbaxt...@gmail.comSubject: Re: [scifinoir2] Clock winds down for '24'To: scifinoir2@yahoogroups.comDate:

  Whoops... pardon me, Fate.
The idea of a countdown was sorta done in "Nick of Time". If memory serves, the counter wasn't on-screen continuously, just at critical points in the movie. Constant countdown, as you said, would make for more suspense.

Did you like it? I think it was a step backward. I doubt that many people
watched it. It
was like watching a bad 80s hip hop movie. Matter of fact there was a
house party reference in it.

They hit all of the bullet points
that was mentioned in the documentary on hip hop that was done a couple
of years ago. Misogyny, homophobia, gun violence, drug use, jail time.
Even Jesus went to jail because he was a gangsta. The only thing good
about it was that it was done with black people and had black characters
 in it.

Pole dancing could be recognized as a sport and headed to the Olympics
BY Rosemary Black

USPoleDance. comPole dancers at the top of their game may one day have a shot
at winning an Olympic medal.

The strip club mainstay pole dancing - known as much for its sensual moves as
its rigorous athletic side - may be headed for the Olympics.
A group of pole-dance advocates is hoping for a test event in 2012 and a more
formal pitch four years after that, in Rio de Janeiro, according to The
Associated Press.

KT Coates, a prominent pole dancer in England and director of Vertical Dance,
is leading the Olympic push.

After a great deal of feedback from the pole-dance community, many of us have
decided that it’s about time pole fitness is recognized as a competitive sport,
and what better way for recognition than to be part of the 2012 Olympics held
in London, she said in a petition she’s preparing for organizers of the London
Olympics.

Coates added that the prospective sport has the wow factor.
While her petition now has about 4,000 signatures, she is hoping to add 1,000
more.
Advocates of pole dancing say other even more unlikely sports have gotten the
approval of the International Olympic Committee. Tug of war was an early
Olympic medal contest, and curling is now huge at the Winter Games.

Yet, well-established sports like cricket and squash haven’t managed to get a
spot for themselves at the Olympics, and baseball and softball recently got the
ax. The International Olympic Community would need to recognize pole dancing as
a sport, which could prove to be an uphill battle.

But pole-dance enthusiasts are hopeful about their chances to go for the gold.
It’s just a matter of time before pole dancing gets Olympic recognition, says
Ania Przeplasko of Hong Kong, founder of the International Pole Dancing Fitness
Association.

There will be a day when the Olympics see pole dancing as a sport, she told
The Associated Press. The Olympic community needs to acknowledge the number of
people doing pole fitness now. We’re shooting for 2012.

Some dancers aren’t so sure about pole dancing at the Olympics because they
worry that the sensual aspect of the discipline would be destroyed, and that
old-school pole dancers might be pushed aside by gymnasts, circus performers
and Chinese acrobats who could easily pick up the moves.

I don’t need to see pole dancing in the Olympics, U.S. Pole Dance Federation
co-founder Wendy Traskos said. I don’t think this is necessarily the path that
we need to take, as a sport.

But Traskos notes that the notion of pole dancers competing for Olympic medals
isn’t as farfetched as it was five years ago.
Now, when you talk about it you don’t hear 'like a stripper' anymore, Traskos
said. You hear things like, 'Oh, my friend takes classes for fitnees' or 'Yes,
I've seen it on 'Oprah.'

CBS NewsmanTips for Handling TelemarketersThree Little Words That Work !!(1)The three little words are:'Hold On, Please...'Saying this, while putting down your phone and walking off (instead of hanging-up immediately) would make each telemarketing call so much more time-consuming that boiler room sales would grind to a halt. Then when you eventually hear the phone company's 'beep-beep-beep' tone, you know it's time to go back and hang up your handset, which has efficiently completed its task. These three little wordswill helpeliminate telephone soliciting.(2) Do you ever get those annoying phone calls with no one on the other end? This is a telemarketing technique where a machine makes phone calls and records the time of day when a person answers the phone. This technique is used to determine the best time of day for a 'real' sales person to call back and get someone at home. What you can do after answering, if you notice there is no one there, is to immediately start hitting your# button on the phone, 6 or 7 times, as quickly as possibleThis confuses the machine that dialed the call and it kicks your number out of their system. Gosh, what a shame not to have your name in their system any longer !!!(3) Junk Mail Help:When you get 'ads' enclosed with your phone or utility bill, return these 'ads' with your payment. Let the sending companies throw their own junk mail away. When you get those 'pre-approved' letters in the mail for everything from credit cards to 2nd mortgages and similar type junk, do not throw away the return envelope. Most of these come with postage-paid return envelopes, right? It costs them more than the regular 41 cents postage 'IF' and when they receive them back..It costs them nothing if you throw them away! The postage was around 50 cents before the last increase and it is according to the weight. In that case, why not get rid of some of your other junk mail and put it in
these cool little, postage-paid return envelopes. One of Andy Rooney's (60 minutes) ideas.Send an ad for your local chimney cleaner to American Express. Send a pizza coupon to Citibank. If you didn't get anything else that day, then just send them their blank application back!If you want to remain anonymous, just make sure your name isn't on anything you send them. You can even send the envelope back empty if you want to just to keep them guessing! It still costs them 41 cents. The banks and credit card companies are currently getting a lot of their own junk back in the mail, but folks, we need to OVERWHELM them. Let's let them know what it's like to get lots
of junk mail, and best of all they're paying for it...Twice!Let's help keep our postal service busy since they are saying that e-mail is cutting into their business profits, and that's why they need to increase postage costs again You get the idea !If enough people follow these tips, it will work I have been doing this for years, and I get very little junk mail anymore.THIS JUST MIGHT BE ONE E-MAIL THAT YOU WILL WANT TO FORWARD TO YOUR FRIENDS

It has been really fun playing a goddess, I have to say. She's wild. It is
full-on flirtatiousness.

This depiction of Hell is sumptuous, decadent and dark, all candlelight and
high ceilings full of Gothic detail. In Greek mythology, Persephone is abducted
by Hades and tricked into becoming his wife and Queen of the Underworld .

She is also the goddess of springtime and Rosario first thought of wearing
robes and flowers. But the actress wanted to go for a modern look with chipped
nail polish and lace rather than a T-shirt and mini skirt.

Instead, she wears a bustle and corset. She said: It's a little darker and
grungier, a gothic image that I think is quite fascinating.

It is fun to reinterpret the myths surrounding her and try to imagine her and
place her in this world.

She's very bitter and angry. She is violent and aggressive and it's
fascinating because she also has innocence and sweetness and childlike
qualities when she's not being completely bitter.

She is also very lustful.

[scifinoir2] Saying Goodbye to Mother

2010-02-18 Thread Augustus Augustus
We
were dressed and ready to go out for the New Years Eve Party.  We
turned on a night light, turned the answering machine on, covered our
pet parakeet and put the cat in the backyard.

We phoned the local cab company and requested a taxi. The taxi arrived and we
opened the front door to leave the house.

As
we walked out the door, the cat we had put out in the yard, scoots
back into the house. We didn't want the cat shut in the house because
she always tries to eat the bird.

My wife goes on out to the
taxi, while I went back inside to get the cat.  The cat runs upstairs,
with me in hot pursuit. Waiting in the cab, my wife doesn't want the
driver to know that the house will be empty for the night.  So, she
explains to the taxi driver that I will be out soon, 'He's just going
upstairs to say Goodbye to my mother.'

A
few minutes later, I get into the cab. 'Sorry I took so long,' I
said, as we drove away. 'That stupid bitch was hiding under the bed. I
had to poke her ass with a coat hanger to get her to come out!  She
tried to take off, so I grabbed her by the neck.  Then, I had to wrap
her in a blanket to keep her from scratching me.  But it worked! I
hauled her fat ass downstairs and threw her out into the back yard!'

The cab driver hit a parked car.

Hollywood can, and often does, forgive paper thin plots - it is, after all,
show business and not show art - but Hollywood cannot forgive $17 box office.
And, then, you are not even paying for concessions? No money! No money! No
money!

A box office disaster (having taken in just $17 million in 11 days). Under
normal Hollywood circumstances this would be the kiss of death. But, since
Luc Besson (Transporter ) is the producer, parts 2, 3 and 4 are not out of

[scifinoir2] Letter From Grandma

2010-02-08 Thread Augustus Augustus
LETTER FROM GRANDMA

Grandma is eighty-eight years old and still drives her own car. She writes:

Dear Grand-daughter,

The other day I went up to our local Christian book store and saw a

'Honk if you love Jesus' bumper sticker.

I was feeling particularly sassy that day because I had just come from a

Thrilling choir performance, followed by a thunderous prayer meeting.

So, I bought the sticker and put it on my

Bumper.

Boy, am I glad I did; what an uplifting experience that followed.

I was stopped at a red light at a busy intersection, just lost in

Thought about the Lord and how good he is, and I didn't notice that the

Light had changed.

It is a good thing someone else loves Jesus because if he hadn't

Honked, I'd never have noticed.

I found that lots of people love Jesus!

While I was sitting there, the guy behind started honking like crazy,

And then he leaned out of his window and screamed, 'For the love of

God!'

'Go! Go! Go! Jesus Christ, GO!'

What an exuberant cheerleader he was for Jesus!

Everyone started honking!

I just leaned out my window and started waving and smiling at all those

Loving people.

I even honked my horn a few times to share in the love!

There must have been a man from Florida back there because I heard him

Yelling something about a sunny beach.

I saw another guy waving in a funny way with only his middle finger

Stuck up in the air.

I asked my young teenage grandson in the back seat what that meant..

He said it was probably a Hawaiian good luck sign or something.

Well, I have never met anyone from Hawaii , so I leaned out the window

And gave him the good luck sign right back.

My grandson burst out laughing.

Why even he was enjoying this religious experience!

A couple of the people were so caught up in the joy of the moment that

They got out of their cars and started walking towards me.

I bet they wanted to pray or ask what church I attended, but this is

When I noticed the light had changed.

So, grinning, I waved at all my brothers and sisters, and drove on

Through the intersection.

I noticed that I was the only car that got through the intersection

Before the light changed again and felt kind of sad that I had to leave

Them after all the love we had shared.

So I slowed the car down, leaned out the window and gave them all the

Hawaiian good luck sign one last time as I drove away. Praise the Lord

For such wonderful folks!!

Will write again soon,

Love, Grandma

Here's a review from Wired, which says it's not bad, but not as good or nuanced
as the actual books:

http://www.wired. com/underwire/ 2010/02/review- planet-hulk/

I read the Planet Hulk compilation last year. The story is a familiar scifi
story: Hulk trapped in a strange land, forced to become a gladiator, escapes to
oppose the evil emperor, becomes a hero/savior to the people. But the way it
was handled was really good. Hulk's powers are reduced due to a space warp that
brings him to the planet, which allows his capture and enslavement. There are
some cool characters, such as Caiera, an alien from a race where some members
can draw strength form the planet itself. The power is rare, which is why
Caiera's ability to use it makes her the Oldstrong. and there's Korg, a
member of the race of beings that the Easter Island statues are based on.

This was all precipitated by Reed Richards, Tony Stark, Black Bolt, and Dr.
Strange having tricked Bruce Banner into a spaceship they were using to banish
him for all time. The ship missed the peaceful planet Reed had intended due to
Hulk's rampage, and landed on this hellish planet instead.

Good story, I really enjoyed it. That was followed by World War Hulk, where
Hulk returns to Earth to get revenge on Reed and company. that was good too,
but not as good as Planet Hulk.

I really am intrigued to see if the cartoon can get it right, especially given
the worrying  lowering of  the adult themes for a younger audience.

[scifinoir2] Elderly Couple

2010-02-02 Thread Augustus Augustus
An elderly couple, Margaret and Bert, moved to Texas.

Bert always wanted a pair of authentic cowboy boots, so, seeing some

on sale, he bought them and wore them home.

Walking proudly, he sauntered into the kitchen and said to his wife,

'Notice anything different about me?'

Margaret looked him over. 'Nope.'

Frustrated, Bert stormed off into the bathroom, undressed and walked

back into the kitchen completely naked except for the boots.

Again he asked Margaret, a little louder this time, 'Notice anything

different NOW?'

Margaret looked up and exclaimed, 'Bert, what's different? It's
hanging down today, it was hanging down yesterday, it'll be hanging
down again tomorrow!'

Furious, Bert yelled,

AND DO YOU KNOW WHY IT'S HANGING
DOWN,
MARGARET?

Nope, she replied.

IT'S HANGING DOWN, BECAUSE IT'S
LOOKING AT MY NEW BOOTS!

Without changing her expression,

Margaret replied, Shoulda bought a hat, Bert.

will not, WILL NOT, but cross titles just 2 follow a story line.  I am not
going 2 do it.  Besides, they always pull it back to the main book anyway.
Civil War was simply brilliant!  And I am waiting on the battle between HAMMER
and Asgard.   I have the first 2 issues of Siege, but I am going 2 hold off on
reading them until I finish my DC JSA vs. Kobra mini-series.  I am reading book
4 out of 6 right now.  Let me ask u this, have u gotten into the New X-Force?
The fact that they have a mutant team that Wolverine leads that actually gets
down and dirty and kill!  AS long as they do not mess with this title, I will

Anyone else still follow Marvel Comics? For the last 2-3 years, I've been
following best as I can several major events shaking up the MU. There was the
Avengers Disassembled, where the Avengers were decimated due to the Scarlet
Witch's breakdown. That was followed by House of M, where the Witch reshaped
reality into one dominated by mutants, then restored reality, only to remove
the mutant abilities of ninety-nine percent of the world's mutants. Then there
was the Civil War, where Iron Man and Captain America fought over a government
order for heroes to register as agents. That culminated in Cap's death and the
ascenion of Iron Man to lead SHIELD. And that was followed by Invasion, where
it was revealed the Skrulls had for years replaced key heroes, leaders and
villains on Earth. They got within a hair's breadth of conquering Earth, but
lost. The fallout from that saw Iron Man disgraced, and the new hero of the day
as Norman Osborn, who know leads
SHIELD's replacement HAMMER, as well as the Avengers. Now we have the Dark
books, as Osborn and his criminal cohorts control things, but a growing
resistance of heroes are gathering to fight them.
Meanwhile, Thor and the Asgardians have defeated Ragnarok and are back from
Limbo, but are now preparing to do battle with Dr. Doom, who along with Loki
has conspired to exploit the Asgardians. As if that weren't enough, there's
Siege, where Osborn has decided the Asgardians must go, and is preparing to hit
Asgard with everything he's got.
Oh--and let's not forget Doomwar, where Dr. Doom has been manipulating the
near-death of T'Challa, and is now preparing to invade Wakanda, but is soon
going to have his hands full fighting T'Challa, his sister (the new Black
Panther), the FF, and Namor.
Whew! The Marvel Universe is going to all sorts or turmoil, and I haven't even
addressed Annihilation, War of Kings (involving the Inhumans and Cyclops' crazy
brother), the great Winter Soldier storyline (the return of Bucky), the X-Men's
travails,  the Spidey books, or the fact that Daredevil now rules the Hand.

I know the concept of the megastory, the maxiseries, and the crossover
storyline has been done to death by Marvel and DC in the last few years. Many
fans groan and complain at the requirement to buy several different books to
follow the latest invasion or battle, and more than one fan feels the major
event is just a gimmick to make people do just that: buy many titles. Often,
it's felt, the events themselves are simply not that compelling. Exceptions
include Crisis on Infinite Earths, Heroes Reborn/Return.

But I have to say i've been caught up in Marvel's incredibly dense, far
reaching, and complex storylines. I dug the Civil War,  though some aspects of
it were puzzling (Spidey reveals his identity to the world? Reed Richards
creates a cyborg clone of Thor?) I'm liking Osborn in control, and the battle
we know is coming to take care of that. I like the Black Panthers taking it to
Doom. Thor has never been more interesting, and I can't wait to see what
happens with Siege.

Guess I'm just a sucker for the high drama. I understand that Marvel's plotted
this for years, and that when the smoke from all these battles ends by April,
the major books are going to go lighter, more retro. The Avengers will be
less grim, and I hear more of the Marvel heroes will return to more

2010-01-20 Thread Augustus Augustus

Did you ever wonder why there are no dead penguins on the ice in Antarctica? Where do they go? Wonder no more! -- It is a known fact that the penguin is a very ritualistic bird which lives an extremely ordered and complex life. The penguin is very committed to its family and will mate for life, as well as maintaining a form of compassionate contact with its offspring throughout its life. If a penguin is found dead on the ice surface, other members of the family and social circle have been known to dig holes in the ice, using their vestigial wings and beaks, until the hole is deep enough for the dead bird to be rolled into and buried. The male penguins then gather in a circle around the fresh grave and sing: 'Freeze a jolly good fellow'. Then they kick him in the ice hole. You really didn't believe that I knew anything at all about penguins, did you?

[scifinoir2] Forwarded Jokes

2010-01-18 Thread Augustus Augustus
This answers all questions explains why I forward jokes.

A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the scenery,
when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead.

He remembered dying, and that the dog walking beside him had been dead for
years. He wondered where the road was leading them.

After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of the
road. It looked like fine marble. At the top of a long hill, it was broken by a
tall arch that glowed in the sunlight.

When he was standing before it he saw a magnificent gate in the arch that
looked like mother-of-pearl, and the street that led to the gate looked like
pure gold.. He and the dog walked toward the gate, and ashe got closer, he saw
a man at a desk to one side.
When he was close enough, he called out, 'Excuse me, where are we?'

'This is Heaven, sir,' the man answered.

'Wow! Would you happen to have some water?' the man asked.

'Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought right up'.
The man gestured, and the gate began to open.

'Can my friend,' gesturing toward his dog, 'come in, too?' the traveler asked.

'I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets.'

The man thought a moment and then turned back toward the road and continued the
way he had been going with his dog.

After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, he came to a dirt
road leading through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed.
There was no fence.

As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and
reading a book.

'Excuse me!' he called to the man. 'Do you have any water?'

'Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there, come on in.'

'How about my friend here?' the traveler gestured to the dog.

'There should be a bowl by the pump.'

They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old-fashioned hand
pump with a bowl beside it.

The traveler filled the water bowl and took a long drink himself, then he gave
some to the dog.

When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward the man who was standing
by the tree.

'What do you call this place?' the traveler asked.

'This is Heaven,' he answered.

'Well, that's confusing,' the traveler said. 'The man down the road said that
was Heaven, too.'

'Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates? Nope. That's
hell.'

'Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?'

'No, we're just happy that they screen out the folks who would leave their best
friends behind.'

S...

Sometimes, we wonder why friends keep forwarding jokes to us without writing a
word.
Maybe this will explain.

When you are very busy, but still want to keep in touch, guess what you do? You
forward jokes.

When you have nothing to say, but still want to keep contact, you forward jokes.

When you have something to say, but don't know what, and don't know how, you
forward jokes.

Also to let you know that you are still remembered, you are still important,
you are still loved, you are still cared for, guess what you get?

A forwarded joke.

So, next time if you get a joke, don't think that you've been sent just another
forwarded joke, but that you've been thought of today and your friend on the
other end of your computer wanted to send you a smile.

You are all welcome @ my water bowl anytime!!!

Heaven. So my young mind was frightened at the thought that some day *I'd* face
some tough test--what if I failed and ended up in a lake of fire and brimstone?
What if I didn't have a faithful hound dog to help me defeat the Devil's ploy?
As an adult, I think differently, of course, and ain't worried about Satan
getting one last shot on souls who've died in Grace. But man did that stuff
scare me as a kid!

Let's not even start on Revelation and some of the horrors it described for the
end times!

This is a take on a classic ep of The Twilight Zone.  In it, an old hillbilly
guy goes hunting for 'coon with his hound dog, even though his wife begs him
not too. She'd seen signs and portents that something awful would happen. The
man and his dog pursue a raccoon into a river, then things go blank. Later he
tries to go home, but quickly realizes he's died, and can't be seen or heard by
his wife or anyone else. Sorrowfully, he and his hound dog walk along a dirt
road toward their reward.  The man stops at one place with a slick-looking
guard before a gate, but his dog is upset and barks at the guy. The gatekeeper
says no pets allowed in Heaven, and the old man sadly says I don't want no
part of a place that won't accept my dog.  They then keep walking, and end up
at a simple gate with a hillbilly chewing on a piece of straw, who says Howdy!
We've been waiting for you!  He says that dogs are sho' 'nuff welcome in
Heaven, and then tells the
relieved old man that the fancy place down the street was Hell. They
gatekeeper was always lying in order to do a last minute grab on saved souls,
he explained, but the Devil couldn't fool a dog!

I wonder if this joke precedes or comes after that Twilight Zone, which is at
least forty years old?

'Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there, come

It is also noteworthy that George Washington included a provision in his will
to free his slaves upon the death of his wife. At the time of his death, there
were 317 slaves at Mount Vernon – 123 owned by Washington, 154 dower slaves,
and 40 rented from a neighbor. Washington had completed and updated slave
inventory list in 1799.

(from Wikipedia):
Washington's secret 1799 will
In 1799, Washington revised his 1786 slave inventory list. This was done to
make sure that his own slaves would be emancipated.[1] It is speculated that
Washington wrote his will in secret in July 1799 because his family would
severely disapprove of emancipating, caring for, and educating freemen, women,
and children. In the will the old and the infirm freed slaves would be taken
care of until death by their heirs. The freed children would be bound by the
Court until they reached 25 years of age, and they would be taught to read and
write and be brought up to some useful occupation. William Lee was given
immediate freedom or the choice to stay at Mt. Vernon with $30 annual pay.[34]
Part of Washington's will read as follows:

Upon the decease of my wife, it is my will and desire that all the slaves which
I hold in my own right shall receive their freedom...And whereas among those
who will receive freedom according to this devise, there may be some who from
old age or bodily infirmities, and others who on account of their infancy, that
will be unable to support themselves; it is my will and desire that all who
come under the first and second description shall be comfortably clothed and
fed by my heirs while they live[34]
On the education of the newly freed African Americans:

The Negroes thus bound, are (by their Masters or Mistresses), to be taught to
read and write; to be brought up to some useful occupation, agreeably to the
Laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia, providing for the support of orphan
other poor Children.[34]
To ensure that the executors of the will would not try to find some way to
evade his wishes to free the slaves, Washington wrote:[35]

and I do hereby expressly forbid the Sale, or transportation out of the said
Commonwealth, of any Slave I may die possessed of, under any pretence
whatsoever. And I do moreover most pointedly, and most solemnly enjoin it upon
my Executors hereafter named, or the Survivors of them, to see that this clause
respecting Slaves, and every part thereof be religiously fulfilled at the Epoch
at which it is directed to take place; without evasion, neglect or
delay http://twitter. com/ravenadal

[scifinoir2] Old Age

2010-01-13 Thread Augustus Augustus

An elderly gentleman...
Had serious hearing problems for a number of years. He went to the doctor and
the doctor was able to have him fitted for a set of hearing aids that allowed
the gentleman to hear 100% .  The elderly gentleman went back in a month to the
doctor and the doctor said, 'Your hearing is perfect. Your family must be
really pleased that you can hear again.' The gentleman replied, 'Oh, I haven't
told my family yet.   I just sit around and listen to the conversations. I've
changed my will three times! '

Two elderly gentlemen from a retirement center were sitting on a bench under a
tree when one turns to the other and says: 'Slim, I'm 83 years old now and I'm
just full of aches and pains. I know you're about my age. How do you feel?'
Slim says, 'I feel just like a newborn baby.' 'Really!? Like a newborn baby!?'
'Yep. No hair, no teeth, and I think I just wet my pants.'

An elderly couple had dinner at another couple's house, and after eating, the
wives left the table and went into the kitchen. The two gentlemen were talking,
and one said, 'Last night we went out to a new restaurant and it was really
great. I would recommend it very highly.'
The other man said, 'What is the name of the restaurant?' The first man thought
and thought and finally said, 'What is the name of that flower you give to
someone you love?
You know... The one that's red and has thorns.' 'Do you mean a rose?'   'Yes,
that's the one,' replied the man. He then turned towards the kitchen and
yelled, 'Rose, what's the name of that restaurant we went to last night?'

Hospital regulations require a wheel chair for patients being discharged.
However, while working as a student nurse, I found one elderly gentleman
already dressed and sitting on the bed with a suitcase at his feet, who
insisted he didn't need my help to leave the hospital.
After a chat about rules being rules, he reluctantly let me wheel him to the
elevator.
On the way down I asked him if his wife was meeting him.   'I don't know,' he
said 'She's still upstairs in the bathroom changing out of her hospital gown .'

Couple in their nineties are both having problems remembering things. During a
checkup, the doctor tells them that they're physically okay, but they might
want to start writing things down to help them remember.   Later that night,
while watching TV, the old man gets up from his chair. 'Want anything while I'm
in the kitchen?' he asks.
'Will you get me a bowl of ice cream?' 'Sure.'  'Don't you think you should
write it down so you can remember it?' she asks.   'No , I can remember it.'
'Well, I'd like some strawberries on top, too. Maybe you should write it down,
so's not to forget it?'   He says, 'I can remember that. You want a bowl of ice
cream with strawberries. '   'I'd also like whipped cream. I'm certain you'll
forget that, write it down?' she asks.  Irritated, he says, 'I don't need to
write it down, I can remember it! Ice cream with strawberries and whipped cream
- I got it, for goodness sake!'   Then he toddles into the kitchen. After about
20 minutes, the old man returns from the kitchen and hands his wife a plate of
bacon and eggs. She stares at the plate for a moment.   'Where's my toast ?'

A senior citizen said to his eighty-year old buddy:
'So I hear you're getting married?'  'Yep!'   'Do I know her?'  'Nope!'   'This
woman, is she good looking?'   'Not really.'   'Is she a good cook?'   'Naw,
she can't cook too well.'  'Does she have lots of money?'  'Nope! Poor as a
church mouse.'  'Well, then, is she good in bed?'   'I don't know.'  'Why in
the world do you want to marry her then?'   'Because she can still drive!'

Three old guys are out walking.   First one says, 'Windy, isn't it?'  Second
one says, 'No, it's Thursday!'  Third one says, 'So am I. Let's go get a beer.'

A man was telling his neighbour, 'I just bought a new hearing aid. It cost me
four thousand dollars, but it's state of the art. It's perfect.'   'Really,'
answered the neighbor . 'What kind is it?'  'Twelve thirty.'

Morris, an 82 year-old man, went to the doctor to get a physical.   A few days
later, the doctor saw Morris walking down the street with a gorgeous young
woman on his arm.
A couple of days later, the doctor spoke to Morris and said, 'You're really
doing great, aren't you?' Morris replied, 'Just doing what you said, Doc: 'Get
a hot mamma and be cheerful.''
The doctor said, 'I didn't say that. I said, 'You've got a heart murmur; be
careful.'

One more!

A little old man shuffled slowly into an ice cream parlor and pulled himself
slowly, painfully, up onto a stool... After catching his breath, he ordered a
banana split.   The waitress asked kindly, 'Crushed nuts?'  'No,' he replied,
'Arthritis.'

Just wondering. Both were on tv recently. BSG: The Plan is a replay of
the initial Cylon attack that wiped out humanity(?) from the Cylon point of
view. It is interesting to do a rewind to see the story behind the scenes.

Caprica rewinds the story even farther back to about 58 years before the war
with the Cylons began. It also covers the origin of the Cylons. The big
difference is that the storyline is more along the lines of an Earth based
drama. They are replaying the pilot episode on 1/22. Here is more info on the
show: http://en.wikipedia .org/wiki/ Caprica_% 28TV_series% 29

Its also on comscum on demand.

Has anyone else watched these two shows?

Anyone watch the new TNT series Men of a Certain Age? It deals with the
lives of three men dealing with being decidedly middle aged, and then some.
Scott Bakula is a womanizing playboy who seems to have a different bed partner
every night and seems to love his weed. Ray Romano's the guy separated from his
wife, partially due ot his gambling addiction, who can't seem to get over here.
And Andre Braugher's the family man who works at a job he hates--car salesman
at his overbearing father's dealership-- in order to take care of his family.
I've enjoyed the show so far. It's got lots of moments of humour, along with
some more serious ones. It's not too heavy handed on the i'm fast getting old
angle.  I like all the actors, though it's really really weird to see Braugher
be under anyone's thumb. I just can't see Frank Pembleton taking guff even from
his old man...

ABOUT MEN OF A CERTAIN AGE

John Lennon once wrote, “Life is what happens when you’re busy making other
plans.” For three men entering the second act of their lives, those words are
starting to hit home in TNT’s newest original series, MEN OF A CERTAIN AGE.
This wry drama stars Emmy® winner Ray Romano (Everybody Loves Raymond), Golden
Globe® winner Scott Bakula (Quantum Leap, Star Trek: Enterprise) and Emmy
winner Andre Braugher (Homicide: Life on the Street, TNT’s Salem’s Lot). It
marks a return to series television for Romano, who created MEN OF A CERTAIN
AGE with Everybody Loves Raymond Emmy winner Mike Royce. The two serve as
executive producers, along with Rory Rosegarten and Cary Hoffman.

MEN OF A CERTAIN AGE explores the unique bonds of male friendship among three
men experiencing the changes and challenges of mid-life. They have been best
friends since college but now, in their 40s, are navigating through the second
act of their lives. Joe (Romano) is a friendly, slightly neurotic, recently
separated father of two who had dreams of being a professional golfer. Now he
owns and runs a party store. Terry (Bakula) is a laid-back, handsome actor who
seems to breeze through life (and women). Lately, he’s spending more time
working as a temp than as an actor. And Owen (Braugher) is an overstressed
husband and father of three who endures constant criticism from his father, for
whom he works as a car salesman.

These friends face very different challenges. Joe, who currently lives in a
hotel, tries to connect with his kids and is dipping his toe in the dating
pool, while also struggling with the gambling problem that may have ended his
marriage. The unmarried Terry scoffs at domestic issues but sometimes wonders
if his own single life is all it’s cracked up to be. Owen does everything he
can to climb the sales board at his father’s car dealership and keep his cool
over the seemingly endless renovation project in the home he can barely afford.
Through it all, these men are there for each other when it counts.

Underworld 4 movie coming in January 2011. Tom Rosenberg from Lakeshore
confirms the rumors about Underworld 4.
Rise Of The Lycans has scored the best critical reaction of any of the movies
in the Underworld series.
Underworld 4 movie will be the next sequel in the group focusing on continuing
the story of Selene (Kate Beckinsale) and Speedman’s story.
Underworld 4 story
“It’s a theatrical release definitely,” Rosenberg tells the site. “I feel great
about that. I think it’s the strongest story that we’ve put together of the
three. I think it’s really terrific. I think it leads to a 4th. When we did the
1st ‘Underworld,’ we imagined three – the 1st one, a sequel and then a prequel.
The 3rd is a prequel, so the 4th would carry on where Kate Beckinsale and Scott
Speedman left off after 2, so I think this is going to be terrific really this
one.” As for the prequel’s storyline: “This is how they meet and Michael Sheen
becomes the leader of the werewolves. This is told from the werewolf’s.

Underworld TV series
Len Wiseman revealed “There’s a lot of talk about a television series, Im
looking into that, if I could be very involved and can be a certain way,
I’d be very interested. …It’s kind of open, if people can join us and go back
in time – and then leap forward, I’d like to go jump all across the time line.”
Expect that to cover several eras then.

It's the movie that to me showcases the rather empty talent the director is,

then Keith, you Martin and Tracey are going to hate me!  i actually like Van
Helsing.  Keith like your brother, i think that sometimes, there is something
in every movie 2 like.  i also like The Fifth element.  actually have both of
the DVD's.  but that's just me.  even District 9 had somethings that i liked,
but i will not buy the DVD because of a lot of the covert and overt racism in
the movie.  but Tracey, i am waiting on the premier of Demons.

A new horror series from the writers of past British hits Hex and Merlin,
Demons features Philip Glenister (Life on Mars, Ashes to Ashes) as cold, stern

those monsters kill him.

Demons unveils a world just out of humans' sight -- full of vampires and other
inhumans. (Insert joke about politicians here.) Luke Rutherford (Christian

Rave,

I feel about District 9, the same way Martin feels about Star Trek (and
Transformers).  I saw it the first time, and that was enough 4 me.  As for your
earlier statement about his familiarity with the suit while killing Blacks as
opposed to the killing of Whites, it's always that way in Hollywood movies.
It's always showing us (Blacks) getting the brunt of the violence.  If anyone
deserved to be executed on film and in an extremely prejudice way, it should
have been the Merc, who was absolutely heartless.  But that's just my feeling.

Deaf Sex

Two deaf people get married and during the first week of marriage they find
that they are unable to communicate in the bedroom with the lights out since
they can't see each other signing, or read lips. After several nights of
fumbling around and many misunderstandings, the wife figures out a solution.

She writes a note to her husband: 'Honey, Why don't we agree on some simple
signals? For instance, at night, if you want to have sex with me, reach over
and squeeze my left breast one time. I f you don't want to have sex, reach over
and squeeze my right breast two times...

The husband thinks this is a great idea. He writes back to his wife That if she
wants to have sex with him, reach over and pull on his pecker one time. If she
doesn't want to have sex, pull on his pecker two hundred and fifty times.

This is the worst day of my life, says the little guy between sobs.

I can't do  anything right.  I overslept and was late to an important meeting,
so my  boss fired me.  When I went to the parking lot, I found my car
was stolen and I don't have any insurance.  I left my wallet in the cab I took

Then I found my wife in bed with the gardener and my dog bit me.  So, I came

[scifinoir2] 3 Good Reasons

2009-12-10 Thread Augustus Augustus
GOD ENJOYS A GOOD
LAUGH!

There were 3 good arguments that Jesus
was Black:

1. He called everyone brother.

2. He liked
Gospel.

3. He didn't get
a fair trial.

But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus
was Jewish:

1. He went into
His Father's business.

2. He lived at
home until he was 33.

3. He was sure
his Mother was a virgin and his Mother was sure He was God.

But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus
was Italian:

1. He talked with His hands.

2. He had wine
with His meals.

3. He used olive oil.

But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus was
a Californian:

1. He never cut His
hair.

2. He walked
around barefoot all the time.

3. He started a
new religion.

But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus was
an American Indian:

1. He was at
peace with nature.

2. He ate a lot
of fish.

3. He talked about
the Great Spirit.

But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus
was Irish:

1. He never got
married.

2. He was always
telling stories.

3. He loved green
pastures.

But the most compelling evidence of all - 3 proofs that Jesus
was a woman:

1. He fed a crowd
at a moment's notice when there was virtually no food.

2. He kept trying
to get a message across to a bunch of men who just didn't get it.

3. And even when
He was dead, He had to get up because there was still work to do.

 Can I get an AMEN!!

We have confirmed this afternoon that ROBERT DOWNEY JR. is in close talks to

Lestat appears as a major character in both motion picture adaptations of

  ESSAY

Walt Disney -- prince or toad?

The studio pioneer's detractors insist that he was racist and mean. A

deeper look shows that the truth about the man is far more complicated.

  By Neal Gabler

  November 22, 2009

Even before it opens later this week, Disney's new animated feature, The

Princess and the Frog, is already considered something of a cultural and

animation landmark. After centering cartoons on a Middle Easterner

(Aladdin), a Native American ( Pocahontas), an Asian (Mulan), and a

Hawaiian (Lilo Stitch), Disney animation has entered the post-racial

era. The new film features a black protagonist alongside the green one.

It has been a long time coming, but it is an event that, if you believe

Disney detractors, would have old Walt spinning in his grave (or his

  cryogenic chamber).

That's because there is a long-standing belief among those detractors that

Walt Disney was anything but the amiable, avuncular, kind-hearted figure he

appeared to be on his television program and in his promotions. The real

Disney, so this version goes, was a rabid reactionary who was intemperate,

crabbed and mean -- racially and ethnically insensitive at best, a racist

and anti-Semite at worst. Under his supervision, the Disney studio was

inhospitable to minorities, few of whomwere said to have workedthere and

they were virtually verboten on the screen, except to be ridiculed. Disney's

was a white, Protestant, middle-class studio and fantasy. Minorities need

  not apply.

How much of this portrait was the product of a smear campaign by Walt's

enemies and how much a product of Walt's own unenlightened attitudes is

difficult to determine. What one can say is that the truth about Walt Disney

seems much more complicated and nuanced than either his enemies or

  supporters would have you believe.

  Labor fight

Disney came by those enemies honestly when his animators staged a strike in

1941 complaining of paternalism and low wages and Walt responded by hustling

the supposed union ringleaders off the lot and firing other union members to

quash their organizing. Even after the four-month-long strike was settled --

under duress by the federal government -- the wounds did not heal. Disney

would feel betrayed for the rest of his life by what he saw as ungrateful

employees. The aggrieved employees got their own measure of revenge by

portraying Walt thereafter in the least flattering light. Most of what we

hear about Disney as a racist or anti-Semite was circulated by animators who

had struck in 1941. I know, because several of them made the same charges to

me when I was working on my biography of Disney.

Unquestionably, especially after the strike, Disney was a political

conservative by way of anti-communism. He was certain that the strike was

instigated by communist agents in the Screen Cartoonists Guild who were

determined to sully the Disney brand -- this after Disney had been extolled

by the left for years for his collaborative enterprise and exemplary working

  conditions.

Though Walt was something of a political naïf -- he had no interest in

Some critics are just off base. If its not a French indie film or made by
some unknown director from Des Moines they don't want any part of it.

Interesting, USA Today thinks the Alice reimagining is both too dark, and

why, as I'm not a big follower of USA Today's critics--but then they dissed
Tin Man. The critic says it was too dark and not very good either. That makes
me wonder know if Alice might be pretty good after all...

 * * * * * * ***
Syfy's 'Alice': Through a looking glass, only very darkly

By Robert Bianco, USA TODAY
All told, it might be best to keep Syfy away from looking glasses and tornadoes.
Last time Syfy decided a children's classic needed to be, in the network's
words, re-imagined, we got Tin Man, a bleak tweaking of The Wizard of Ozthat
buried a simple, gentle story under an ugly universe-saving quest. Now we get
Alice, which throws Lewis Carroll's Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass
adventures into the same revisionist blender and spews out something close to
the same unappetizing gruel.

Close, but not quite. What gives Alice a slight edge over its Ozian cousin is a
less-heavy hand, a few brighter performances and a source better suited to a
darkling outlook. Nor does it hurt that Alice, while still overextended, has
two fewer hours than Tin Man. None might have been best, but less is more.

Written and directed by Nick Willing (who also directed Tin Man), Alice turns
Carroll's curious girl into Alice Hamilton (Caterina Scorsone), a 20-ish
martial-arts expert with commitment issues and a father fixation. When her
boyfriend (Philip Winchester) is kidnapped, Alice follows his assailants to
Wonderland, landing in the not-completely- trustworthy hands of Hatter
(Andrew-Lee Potts, Alice's best asset).

This is the same Wonderland the first Alice found, but time – and, apparently,
an ambitious building program – have imbued it with the arid post-apocalyptic
air of which Syfy is so inordinately fond. And it's ruled by an even more evil
queen (a disappointing, inexplicably English-accented Kathy Bates), who plies
her compliant subjects with emotions she drains from kidnapped humans.

For an hour or so, simple pleasures suffice, such as matching old characters to
new and faces to names (Tim Curry, Colm Meaney, Harry Dean Stanton and Matt
Frewer among them). And some of the literary translations are clever, led by
Wonderland's adoption of flamingo-shaped flying scooters.

But Alice soon bogs down in Willing's superimposed plot, with its shifting
motives and dreary lectures. And while there are times Alice fends (or punches)
for herself, too often Scorsone succumbs to a drab weepiness.

Willing has recast Carroll's story as a heroine's journey to enlightenment, but
it's tough to see what precisely Alice learns – unless the moral is Dump the
loser, and if he's really worth anything, he'll chase after you. So you're
left with a woman whose main quest is unsuccessful, and a movie that's glum,
long and devoid of any sense of wonder.

That's two classic strikes, Syfy. For literature's sake, let that be enough.

The Island was an unofficial remake of another movie called the Clonus
Horror (1979) that was a low budget film. I rented it about a year or two ago.
They are very similar. So similar that the director of the film sued and won.
Dreamworks settled out of court.

A good remake idea that is similar to this plot would be the movie Coma. It is
a movie about a hospital that turns their patients into a body part harvesting

[scifinoir2] Genie In A Bottle

2009-11-25 Thread Augustus Augustus
Great story

A
Husband takes his wife to play her first game of golf.Unfortunately, the
wife promptly whacked her first shot right through the window
of the biggest house adjacent to the course.

The husband
cringed, I warned you to be careful! Now we'll have to go up there,
find the owner, apologize and see how much your lousy drive is going to
cost us.

So the couple walked up to the house and knocked on the door. A warm voice
said, Come on in.

When
they opened the door they saw the damage that was done: glass was all
over the place, and a broken antique bottle was lying on its side near
the broken window.

A man reclining on the couch asked, Are you the people that broke my window?

Uh...yeah, sir. We're really sorry about that, the husband replied.

Oh,
no apology is necessary. Actually I want to thank you... You see, I'm a
genie , and I've been trapped in that bottle for a thousand years. Now
that you've released me, I'm allowed to grant three wishes. I'll give you each
one wish, but if you don't mind, I'll keep the last one for myself.

Wow,
that's great! the husband said. He pondered a moment and blurted out,
I'd like a million dollars a year for the rest of my life.

No problem, said the genie. You've got it, it's the least I can do. And I'll
guarantee you a long, healthy life!

And now you, young lady, what do you want? the genie asked.

I'd like to own a gorgeous home complete with servants in every country in the
world, she said.

Consider it done, the genie said. And your homes will always be safe from
fire, burglary and natural disasters!

And now, the couple asked in unison, what's your wish, genie?

Well, since I've been trapped in that
bottle and haven't been with a woman in more than a thousand years, my wish is
to have sex with your wife.

The
husband looked at his wife and said, Gee, honey, you know we both now
have a fortune and all those houses. What do you think?

She
mulled it over for a few moments and said, You know, you're right.
Considering our good fortune, I guess I wouldn't mind, but what about
you, honey?

You know I love you sweetheart, said the husband. I'd do the same for you!

So the genie and the woman went upstairs where they spent the rest of the
afternoon enjoying each other in every way.

After
about three hours of non-stop sex, the genie rolled over and looked
directly into her eyes and asked, How old are you and your husband?

Why, we're both 35, she responded breathlessly.

NO SHIT.. He said, Thirty-five years old and you both still believe in
genies?

Mr. Worf,

i like it.  although the guy who voices cleveland is white, the show is fun 2
me.  especially last night's ep about thanksgiving and his dad doing a man whom

agree, but remember, mom and dad are not a couple anymore.  they showed up

I thought last night's show was funny and edgy, but I was a little
bothered that the mom didn't object to the father's womanizing. It also
reinforces stereotypes about black men.

I am happy that I can watch black folks on tv. The Proud family was a pretty
good show and had very funny moments in it.

[scifinoir2] Thanksgiving Dinner

2009-11-23 Thread Augustus Augustus
10 RULES FOR THANKSGIVING DINNER AT MY HOUSE

1. Don't get in line asking questions about the food. Who made the

potato salad? Is it egg in there? Are the greens fresh? Is the meat

in the greens turkey or pork? Who made the macaroni and cheese?

What kind of pie is that? Who made it? Ask one more question and I

will punch you in your mouth, knocking out
 all your fronts so you

won't  be able to eat anything.

2. If you can't walk or are missing any limbs, sit your ass down

until someone makes your plate for you. Dinner time is not the time

for you to be independent. Nibble on them damn pecans and walnuts to hold

you over until someone makes you a plate.

3. If you have kids under the age of twelve, I will escort their

little asses to the basement and bring their food down to them. They

are not gonna tear my damn house up this year. Tell them that they

are not allowed upstairs until it's time for Uncle Butchie to start

telling family stories about their mommas and papas. If they come upstairs

for any reason except for that they are bleeding to death, I will break a

 foot off in their
 asses!

4. There is going to be one prayer for Thanksgiving dinner! JUST

ONE! We do not care that you are thankful that your 13 year old

daughter gave birth to a healthy baby or your nephew just got out of jail.

Save that talk for somebody who gives a damn. The time limit for the

prayer is one minute. If you are still talking after that one minute is up,

you will feel something hard come across your lips and they will be

 swollen for approximately 20 minutes.

5. Finish everything on your plate before you go up for seconds! If

you don't, you will be cursed out and asked to stay your greedy ass

 home next year!

6. BRING YOUR OWN TUPPERWARE!! Don't let me catch you fixing

yourself a plate in my good Tupperware knowing
 damn well that I will

never see it again! Furthermore, if you didn't bring anything over,

don't let me catch you making a plate period or it will be a

 misunderstanding.

7. What you came with is what you should leave with!! Do not leave

my house with anything that doesn't belong to you. EVERYBODY WILL BE

SUBJECTED TO A BODY SEARCH COMING AND GOING OUT OF MY DOMAIN!!!

8. Do not leave your kids so you can go hopping from house to house.

This is not a DAYCARE CENTER ! There will be a kid-parent roll call

every ten minutes. Any parent that is not present at the time of roll

call, your child will be put outside until you come and get him or

her.  After 24 hours, I will call DHS on your ignorant ass!!

9. BOOK YOUR HOTEL ROOM BEFORE YOU COME INTO TOWN!! There
 will be no

sleeping over at my house! You are to come and eat dinner and take

your ass home or to your hotel room. EVERYBODY GETS KICK THE HELL OUT AT

11:00 pm. You will get a 15 minute warning bell ring.

10. Last but not least! ONE PLATE PER PERSON!! This is not a soup

kitchen. I am not trying to feed your family until Christmas dinner!

You will be supervised when you fix your plate. Anything over the

appropriate amount will be charged to you before you leave. There

will be a cash register at the door. Thanks to Cousin Alfred and his

greedy ass family, we now have a credit card machine! So VISA and MASTERCARD

are now being accepted. NO FOOD STAMPS OR ACCESS CARDS YET!

Funny stuff! My wife and I don't have relatives here in Atlanta, so
rather than cook this year or going to some friends', we were thinking of going
out. (The fact that I have to watch my blood sugar now didn't help, as pies and
cakes were my favorite part!). My wife has long been a fan of eating out to
avoid all the time spent on cooking and all the leftovers. I was entertaining
it, but you know, i actually started thinking how I'd *miss* some of the stuff
you mentioned below! I like the chaos of family meals; the loud kids, the
arguments, that relative who leaves with more food on paper plates than he
brought. Nothing like the cacaphony, confusion, and yes, even disagreements
around a family dinner. I just couldn't see sitting sedately in a restaurant
while waiters politely bring my food, and I don't even get to complain about
who ate the last slice of the sour cream pound cake!

My college roommate is flying in from San Fran to be with his mom, who lives
here, so we'll be going there instead. Still no kids, but we ought to ahve some
decent arguments, since he's a 49ers fan and I support America's Team, and he
loves the new Star Trek movie, and I think it's an enjoyable but regretable
move.

There are a handful of Black vampire stories but I don't see Hollywood
trying to fast track them for greenlight productions. Laurent obviously  dies
in New Moon cause they have showed that like 10 times in the trailer. I'm
not sure if there are any other Black vampires in Twilight. Blade was the only
successful Blk vampire series.

The Princess and the Frog is already making Disney a TON of money and hasn't
been released. It's #1 in toy sales and will probably be the #1 toy for the
holiday season.

This
just in: 'Dollhouse' axed

This has been a busy week for cancellations. The latest addition to the TV
graveyard: Dollhouse.

According to multiple insiders, Fox has informed Joss Whedon that it will
not be ordering additional installments of his low-rated drama beyond the
current 13-episode order. On the bright side, the network still plans to burn
off the remaining unaired episodes beginning in December. Hey, it’s
something.

Dollhouse has been averaging a mere 3 million viewers this season.
Last season — when fan support, together with significant budget cuts,
helped it to get an odds-defying second-year pickup — the show averaged
4.7 million.

Bottom line: Dollhouse is lucky it ever saw a second season.
Remember that when you’re posting your eulogies below.

UPDATE: Whedon just posted the following statement on Whedonesque. com:
“I don’t have a lot to say. I’m extremely proud of the people
I’ve worked with: my star, my staff, my cast, my crew. I feel the show is
getting better pretty much every week, and I think you’ll agree in the
coming months. I’m grateful that we got to put it on, and then come back
and put it on again. I’m off to pursue Internet ventures/binge drinking.
Possibly that relaxation thing I’ve read so much about. By the time the
last episode airs, you’ll know what my next project is. But for now,
there’s a lot of work still to be done, and disappointment to bear. Thank
you all for your support, your patience, your excellent adverts. See you
again.”

Still watching
the show, and still enjoying it for the most part. Interesting how dark they're
really going. For example, I thought the people back on Earth were pretty damn
callous at how they wanted the Destiny crew to try using a star to power the
gate. They had this attitude of it's worth the risk, but the passengers and
crew weren't so sanguine!
There seems to be a lot of sinister things going on
behind the scenes, which I guess will be revealed in time. Even Jack O'Neill is
given a bit of an edge. When Young first told Jack they were having problems on
Destiny, his attitude was Fix it. Of course he's always there for Young when
he needs help, but the attitude was a bit offputting to me. Tough love so Young
doesn't freak out in the face of impossible odds, perhaps?

I also admit
that even I now would like to see something in the plots besides the
crisis-aboard- ship each week. Are they through with the element-themed
shows--Fire , Water, Air, etc? I'm still trying to figure out how the
Destiny is supposedly locked into its singular journey across space, its
twelve-hour layover limit, yet Rush can at least tell it things like We need
to
stop to find water. How is it he can communicate that and get a response, but
can't say something like Stop the countdown, we have people  still not on
board!, or, Don't jump yet, our shuttle hasn't returned! ?

 And,
while Destiny is old and locked on a course, its systems failing, I'm not
getting why its base programming doesn't force it to stop and re-evaluate
things
once humans were on board? Shouldn't its prime directive require it to stop and
await instructions, instead of kidnapping them on its crazy ride to nowhere?
Did
the Ancients not build in failsafes and automatic overrides, 'cause I can't get
why the ship is still moving on singlemindedly, creating gates along the way
and
for the most part ignoring the humans?

Finally, those
consciousness- exchanging co mmunication devices are an awfully convenient plot
device, huh? Billions of light years across the galaxy, and they do perfect
communications.

And are there any protocols established for using the
damn things, for respecting the host's body?  I mean, Eli and Chloe go out
partying in their hosts' bodies, and Chloe even gets hers drunk. What would the
hosts think waking up the next morning with a major hangover? And  Colonel
Young having sex with his estranged wife while in the body of Colonel
Telford---huh? Now, while I get that Young would want to get with his ex--she's
gorgeous!--isn' t it a bit weird to do it in the body of a guy he clearly
dislikes? And I don't know about you, but isn't a bit odd to think of your wife
*liking* another man's body making love to her? I'm pretty damn sure that, once
back on the ship, I'd be thinking about that, and I'd start having real doubts
about exactly *who* the wife was reacting to, you know? And, as evidenced by
Telford knocking on her door at the end of the show, I'd be *real* concerned
she
might start liking his *body* regardless of whose mind is in it!

And one
last thing--what the hell has Richard Dean Anderson been eating in the last
couple of years??
