RE: Ponyo (Hayao Miyazaki} RE: [RE][scifinoir2] Something has gone wrong with Where the Wild Things Are

2009-08-18 Thread Tracey de Morsella
She loves all that. She liked 2D, 3, D all of it. At Christmas we all the all
stop motion stuff and we rent stuff like Polar Express. She also likes all
the all Disney stuff, but she is also into to Monsters vs Aliens So do her
friends. While I was sick, and could not take them out, I would entertain them
with dress up days and movie matinees. They watched it all.

Maybe if they are exposed young enough. She has been watching the stuff we
grew up on since two. Lately she has been asking to Pebbles and Bamm Bamm
because of a commercial she saw and she liked watching The Jetsons on Boomerang

Question: I've asked you this before. Does Kira have problems watching either
traditional 2D animated 'toons, like SpongeBob or Panyo, or old stuff like
the stop-motion Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Santa Claus is Coming to
Town, etc?
I ask because I know someone who has kids, but isn't into cartoons or kids'
shows at all. I was giving her advice on what to watch, and spoke of my love
for all the classic stop-motion Christmas programs. She said her kids refused
to watch Rudolph and stuff because the shows were obviously old and primitive
compared to modern CGI animation. She said, unless Rudolph transformed or
something, her kids wouldn't watch. And, they didn't like a lot of old stuff
like Flinstones either. It's all about the latest movies, the CG animation, and
video games. She seemed to think that was normal, just a new generation of
kids only liking what's new. I explained that I loved animation of all sorts,
from flip art in a book, to old, old BW stuff like Steamboat Willie, to the
new stuff.

When I went to see Panyo, I was pleased to see dozens of young kids in the
theatre who loved the movie, so it made me wonder if it's more my friends'
kids, instead of all youngsters nowadays refusing to watch 2D or old 'toons.

I took my wife to see it today. you know I'm always in the theatre when a
Miyazaki film debuts! It's definitely more of a sweet film, aimed at younger
kids. But that being said, I'd still take a young boy to see it, if for nothing
else, to let him appreciate true animation (not the computer generated stuff),
and to appreciate a nicely told story. There were lots of men in the theatre
where we saw it. Those not with children, like me, were with their wives.
A really sweet movie, we both loved it, especially the beautiful Ponya (in both
forms), and her sisters. There eyes were so full of joy and love and laughter.
And amazing that, at almost two hours, it didn't bore the kids in my
theatre--and there were a lot of them!

Get him something else. It adorable and sweet. If I were going to introduce
Miyazaki to a nine year old, I would show him some of the other stuff. This is
about a five year old boy who finds a pretty goldfish who turns into a little
girl to be with and almost causes the destruction of the world. I think adults
would appreciate it more than male tweens and pretweens

Tracey, I'm sorry -- I was thinking about giving it to him on DVD by then.
Doubt his mother would let me take him to see it, even if it were showing then.
She's one man-hatin' woman. I'm her brother, and she'll barely let me into her

I do not think it will be in the theatres then. It is only at 3 theaters here
in a 100 mile radius. Ask him if he has seen the Miyazaki hits, the ones more
well known and awarded like Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke?

So there was no way they were going to hate it. I think it might be too sweet
for a nine year old boy. If he likes other Miyazaki films he will like it,
otherwise, I’m inclined to say perhaps not. I loved it too, though

SOMETHING HAS gone very wrong with Where the Wild Things Are, the
much-anticipated Spike Jonze adaptation of Maurice Sendak's classic
children's book. The $80-million film, with a script by literary cool guy
Dave Eggers, was filmed largely in the second half of 2006 in Australia. It
was originally slated for release this October but got pushed back to the
fall of 2009. Last week it disappeared entirely from the Warner Bros.
release schedule, a sign of continuing troubles.

Ponyo (Hayao Miyazaki} RE: [RE][scifinoir2] Something has gone wrong with Where the Wild Things Are

2009-08-16 Thread Tracey de Morsella
Keep in mind, I was with two little girls, six and eight who can be dramatic.
They “loved it” that being said, the kids in the theatre were young… say
4-8 on average with some older kids. These girls were primed for it. Back
when I was sicker and could not go out, I would have them do movie afternoons
with me. Some of those afternoons included Kiki’s delivery service, spirited
away, howl’s moving castle, Princess Mononoke, Porco Rosso,My Neighbor Totoro,
and Whisper of the heart.

Last week it disappeared entirely from the Warner Bros. release
schedule, a sign of continuing troubles.

Keep in mind, I was with two little girls, six and eight who can be dramatic.
They “loved it” that being said, the kids in the theatre were young… say
4-8 on average with some older kids. These girls were primed for it. Back when
I was sicker and could not go out, I would have them do movie afternoons with
me. Some of those afternoons included Kiki’s delivery service, spirited away,
howl’s moving castle, Princess Mononoke, Porco Rosso,My Neighbor Totoro, and
Whisper of the heart.

So there was no way they were going to hate it. I think it might be too sweet
for a nine year old boy. If he likes other Miyazaki films he will like it,
otherwise, I’m inclined to say perhaps not. I loved it too, though

I do not think it will be in the theatres then. It is only at 3 theaters here

Tracey, I'm sorry -- I was thinking about giving it to him on DVD by then.
Doubt his mother would let me take him to see it, even if it were showing then.
She's one man-hatin' woman. I'm her brother, and she'll barely let me into her
house.

I do not think it will be in the theatres then. It is only at 3 theaters here
in a 100 mile radius. Ask him if he has seen the Miyazaki hits, the ones more
well known and awarded like Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke?

2009-08-16 Thread Keith Johnson

The Kids in our theatre loved it too. But he said he was going to mail him the
dvd. If I was going to introduce him to Miyazaki by DVD and not be watching it
with him, I would use one of the others like Princess Mononoke. Once he was
indoctrinated, I think his mind would be open to a sweet story like Ponyo on DVD

SOMETHING HAS gone very wrong with Where the Wild Things Are, the
much-anticipated Spike Jonze adaptation of Maurice Sendak's classic children's
book. The $80-million film, with a script by literary cool guy Dave Eggers, was
filmed largely in the second half of 2006 in Australia. It was originally
slated for release this October but got pushed back to the fall of 2009. Last
week it disappeared entirely from the Warner Bros. release schedule, a sign of
continuing troubles.

I heard that it was considered to be too scary for kids. That was a while
back. It may be just another film on the shelf that we may never get to see.

I would love to see all of the films that were never released that are
gathering dust. There are probably some real gems hidden there.
