No complaints whatsoever. I'm also happy that he's got two years to get into
the role, work out any kinks.

OK now that it is official, what do you guys think?

Paterson Joseph to be the first black Doctor Who

The actor Paterson Joseph is to be the first black Doctor Who. Sources
close to the BBC have reportedly confirmed that he has been asked to
be the new Doctor and that he accepted a couple of days ago. You can
currently see him in the science fiction TV series Survivors, as Greg
Preston, one of the lucky - well, perhaps - 5 per cent to survive a
global meta-plague.

London-born, as well as Survivors, Paterson Joseph's fantasy and
science fiction resume includes the Marquis de Carabas in Neverwhere,
a bit part in the Doctor Who episode Bad Wolf, as Giroux alongside
Charlize Theron in Paramount's Aeon Flux movie; as Space Marshall
Clarke in the BBC SF sitcom Hyperdrive, and he played Benjamin in the
BBC's fantasy horror series Jekyll.

First Obama, now Doctor Who, what can we say at SFcrowsnest.com apart
from wow! He's a great actor and he'll be a fab Doctor.

Works for me! About time a man from another world takes on a body that's other
than Caucasian. and you know what? In many ways, the Brits--who probably have
fewer name people of color than we do--can ironically do Black actors with more
respect and complexity than Americans can. I think of TV shows and movies on
the likes of cable and such, and I can recall more Black men treated with
respect in British shows than in American ones--at least, in lead roles.

I wonder if he'll be forced to have companions of color only (black, Latina,
Asian), or if they'll give him a white companion/love interest?

Depends on your definition of respect...

British television is high on content and drama. Reality, depth of character
are important to a trully progressive art form, so it is natural to embrace
people of color. I think this is a function of the trend and narrative; not
some kind of perceived affirmative action.

It's not official until the Beeb declares it.

Regardless...I saw a clip of him in Neverwhere. He's got the right eyes for
the role and enough of the Tenth Doctor in him to pull it off.

I've seen the other candidates...meh.

Frankly, I'd rather have Tennant back. If he'd come back after the specials
and say Just kidding, I'd gladly forgive him and take him back on the
show.

I'm dying to confirm this on my site as well, but I agree, with no
BBC confirmation, I'm leaving this as rumor status. If I were to bet,
I'd say they'll confirm it around Christmas. BBC would also want to
get Survivors on BBC America to really test him with audiences.

Tennant is so far my favorite, too.

More than one site is declaring it as fact, but I don't know where they're
getting their facts from. A leaked video of an interview with someone
appearing to slip and stating him as the potential Doctor (after almost
saying he was) caused a LOT of these rumors to occur. But we don't know if
he slipped due to Oops, I let loose the truth or Oops, I let loose the
rumor I had heard. It's rather difficult to make out what happened, and we
won't know until the Beeb speaks up.
I miss Tennant already. :(
