If you read it as being in A, Gore's index sorta matches it with a Harris Dance in MacDonald (p37). Anybody got a MacDonald to check? It would go quite well with the Harris Dance usually played these days. Anybody on this list coming to Edinburgh for the Festival? There's a series of four programmes on Gaelic music from different regions of Scotland in the official Festival, at the Hub, which look good if pricy (and subject to the problem that the Hub's main hall has an ambience like a school assembly room). - Jack Campin: 11 Third Street, Newtongrange, Midlothian EH22 4PU; 0131 6604760 http://www.purr.demon.co.uk/jack * food intolerance data recipes, Mac logic fonts, Scots traditional music files and CD-ROMs of Scottish music. off-list mail to j-c rather than scots-l at this site, please Posted to Scots-L - The Traditional Scottish Music Culture List - To subscribe/unsubscribe, point your browser to: http://www.tullochgorm.com/lists.html

Barbara wrote: That's one of my favorite albums (remember those - the big black things made of vinyl?). I looked on the liner notes and don't see the reel listed but I played the ABC you sent and I definitely remember it. Which track is it part of? Em...em...To the Begging I think. I am currently slogging through a transcription of The Unicorn by Ossian fiddler Stuart Morison as played by the Tannahill Weavers. I am not very good at this, but when I'm passionate about a tune that I want to learn, I force myself to try. I can sort-of play it by ear on fiddle, but it is in 3-flats which is not particularly harp friendly. Once I get it transcribed, I can tell my program to change keys (either up or down) and pick the one that sounds closest to the original key. Wish me luck! Good luck, Barb. Which album is it on? This one has 70 tunes, a number of which have never been reprinted. -Steve -- Steve Wyrick -- Concord, California Steve - I have only just joined the list so I am unaware wether you have available Petrie's 1st collection as well. I would very much like the 1st and 2nd collection if available (and for that matter anything else you might have!) I am particularily looking for ABC's of J. Scott Skinner Please send to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Many Thanks Bev Lawton

Bev Lawton wrote: I am particularily looking for ABC's of J. There are also more than 700 other tunes, mostly Scottish, but some Irish, American and other tunes too, at http://www.nigelgatherer.com/tunes/abc.html -- Nigel Gatherer, Crieff, Scotland mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Posted to Scots-L - The Traditional Scottish Music Culture List - To subscribe/unsubscribe, point your browser to: http://www.tullochgorm.com/lists.html

Maybe we need a Skinner Project like some of the others, to get all of his tunes into abc form. Of course, there may be copyright problems with some of them. You might take a look at http://www.abdn.ac.uk/scottskinner/, which has scanned images of his handwritten manuscripts. The page at http://www.abdn.ac.uk/scottskinner/music.shtml is the root of this part of the collection. They're quite readable. I'd bet that if we asked them, they would approve of us doing a scholarly abc transcription of the music, and they might even give it a permanent home online. (I could collect them on my site in the meantime.) Maybe I should send them a message suggesting such a project, and see what their reaction might be. And, of course, if anyone posts any Skinner tunes in abc here, I'll be one of the many who would nab them and stick them into my online Skinner directory. Be sure to include a C:J.S.Skinner line, of course, maybe spelled out a bit more if you like. Good luck, Barb. Which album is it on? D'you want some help? Nigel Gatherer, Crieff, Scotland It's on Capernaum. Finished it last night, and it's a pretty good transcription. Took me a total of about 3 hours - so you can see I don't do this very well. There are no doubt some errors, but it's close. I love it in the key it's in on the fiddle (and I'm not that good in flat keys), but I changed it into E-minor for the harps. The 2 of them loved it. Thanks for the offer of help. If I find a tune with syncopation I know I'll need help. I have trouble with some unusual rhythms - but I love them.
