Re: [scots-l] Is there anybody there? (was: Dumbarton's drum)

2001-06-14 Thread Maggie Mcgregor

I'm afraid I've been a lurker up until now - and I've enjoyed getting a much needed
lesson on Scottish music.
I'm from Edinburgh originally but raised in Toronto, Canada. I got onto the list
because I'm a Gaelic learner here in Toronto and one list seems to lead to
another. I'm not musical but many of the other Gaelic learners over here are and I've
been learning quite a bit from them.
I keep many of the bits and pieces of info you all provide so on my next trip back to
Scotland I'll have a whole list of festivals and groups to look up and
to try and get to see.
I've passed along your listname to others in our learners group who may be able to
contribute to the discussions. David Greenburg and Kate Dunlay have come
to one of our all-day workshops and I've heard them perform at a Toronto Gaelic
Society meeting and they are not only wonderful musicians but also terrific
teachers.
Hope some of the other lurkers get brave enough to contribute.

Sorry 'bout dat! It is amazingly easy to get such quotes wrong. It's
also easy to let the mail reader figure it out, and then you can
blame the software for getting it wrong.

Yeah; I wonder how many lurkers there are. It's normal for lists to
be dominated by a handful of voices, who seem to be having a
discussion amongst themselves with few clues that there are hundreds
of others (not to mention the Echelon/Carnivore folks ;-) listening
 in undetected.

Maybe we should also ask the lurkers to post their current favorite
 tune ...

Not fair, John, to attribute my genius to that plagiarist Flowers. So
my parents used to lock me in the cellar with nothing to read but old
Rupert the Bear annuals, resulting in an occasional uncontrollable urge
to spout rhyming couplets. That's no reason to strip me of the glory
that is justly mine and mine alone.

Silly Season approaching, I guess. Who is there and who isn't? Is Erica
still lurking?

OK, lurkers, your time has come. All you folks who have never (or

Tracy, tell us about the Keith festival. David K, what are your plans
for the Scottfest? Ross, how long have you been playing? Eric, is Bob
still fiddling? Kate, how is David's career going? Gaye, did you ever
play music with Jim Tweedie? Philip, are you from the Kelso area
originally? Dan, d'you play Scots music on the mandolin? Bruce, Sue,
Tom, Rita, Charlie, Janice, Jack, John C, Keith...come on guys, let's
have a party.

First priority - get our local paper NOT to spike my letters on the subject!

So far I've got myself dragged into an impromptu 1-minute interview with
Michael Aspel to go out next April in Antiques Roadshow from
Mellerstain. I tipped them off about the bicentenary and he's used it in
his intro, and done a rather silly bit of film with a souvenir Scott
book of mine where he taps the wooden cover ('Made from trees grown on
the Abbotsford Estate').

They will probably leave that entire bit on the cutting room floor...
