Re: [Scottish] Checked your proxy lately?
I moved my ssh server off the standard port to get rid of the constant poking it got and that simply killed all the noise. I've always been running ssh on another (1024) port. Some weeks ago, I installed and started Kippo[0] and had external port 22 forwarded to it instead. It's a SSH honeypot program that logs to files and optionally MySQL connection attempts and connections succeeded. For succeeded connections, the input is logged and available for analysis along with any downloaded files. It's amazing the amount of connection attempts people do to my box... as well as the cluelessness of some who do connect ;) I've since then released a wee webapp to track statistics of the SSH honeypot on github[1]. I've been debating whether to have a cron script that lists connections and details for me to mail abuse@ for the connections which are clearly done by a human... Re: [Scottish] Broadband advice
I'll be telecommuting (which will be a new experience) and wondered if people had any advice on a decent ISP? At home, my ISP is demon (home office package) and I am quite happy with them. My partner telecommutes a couple days a week and we have no problems with the connection. Luckily we are near the phone exchange, so we get an ADSL2+ with 20 MiB down / 1 MiB up for ~£24.99 a month. I know of at least one person at the Glasgow Perl Mongers which sings the praises of Andrews and Arnold (http://www.aaisp.net.uk/), and have been thinking of switching myself. Their service is reportedly great. http://www.aaisp.net.uk/broadband-prices.html Their plan for 3GiB/month daytime + 50 GiB/month evenings/weekend comes at £24.44 which is pretty much the same as demon. I have not switched yet as I have not been able to determine how much data is transferred when my partner works from home (our router is not collaborating). By the way, if anybody is interested to join the Glasgow Perl Mongers: we will have our next technical meeting on Thursda 2011-01-13, see http://glasgow.pm.org/ Hope this helps :) -marco- -- Marco Fontani ___ Scottish mailing list Scottish@mailman.lug.org.uk https://mailman.lug.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/scottish
Re: [Scottish] Connect to a network from CLI
So I am sat in a cafe thinking TTY's not so bad, I've got w3m installed and I just want to read the news anyway... and that's where I came unstuck. Could I figure out how to connect to a network from the CLI? I ditched NetworkManager for wicd, which does come with a wicd-curses interface. Works very well for me. It _does not_ work properly if networkmanager is also installed. The logs and debug messages you get if both are installed do not make it easy to identify the root cause (that networkmanager is also trying to manage the connections). That bit me when I installed kubuntu on top of ubuntu, which pulled networkmanager again: it puzzled me for quite a while. Never had a problem with it since, and I use it on both my netbook and the desktop (both connecting wirelessly, but only the netbook connecting to cafes' networks for obvious reasons). YMMV, -marco- ___ Scottish mailing list Scottish@mailman.lug.org.uk https://mailman.lug.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/scottish
Re: [Scottish] Scotland features in Microsoft ad regarding OOo
I noticed it features a quote by a David Sterling, ICT Manager for Central Scotland Police. You will find the very same quote on the Microsoft site: http://www.microsoft.com/casestudies/Microsoft-Office-2003/Central-Scotland-Police/Central-Scotland-Police-Cuts-Maintenance-Costs-30-Percent-By-Replacing-Linux-Desktop/49609 You may like to read redditors' comments on the matter, at http://www.reddit.com/r/linux/comments/dqvwi/microsoft_posts_video_of_customers_criticizing/ The linked Ars Technica article pointed out the following: we found that these quotes are actually from case studies and press articles from the last four years, most of which are hosted on Microsoft.com and they also link to each and every one of these case studies.
