Demon handled conversion via BT went very smoothly. Demon allow NATS on Express Solo Product at 24.99 per month - less if you pay year up front. Installed Netgear 834G router - everything was up and running in minutes once ADSL was enabled. Demon gave the few parameters required - no problems at all in installation. Have upgraded firmware in router since but the only problem was when there was a circuit failure courtesy of BT - apart from that everything excellent. Can recommend router approach and Demon Internet. -- Ian Robertson Tel +44 (0)1224 624811 Tel/Fax +44 (0)1224 781326 ___ Scottish mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://mailman.lug.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/scottish

Hi (at last), Sorry it's taken so long to respond and thanks to all all for their help and suggestions. Working in Ireland during the week, delays getting BT to convert my ISDN to DSL. etc. meant that it was all vey slow going. Particular thanks to Phil. Took your suggestion and signed up with force9 (quoted you when I signed up - have they honoured the referral?). Same problems with the Alcatel modem, eventually gave up and bought a Zoom X5 (modem, router, firewall and 4-port switch). Not cheap at 80GBP but gives a lot of bang for the buck. Nice browser based configuration. I'd recommend it to anyone. Setup literally took minutes and (once I managed to spell my username - cfraser - how difficult can that be?) connected first time. The connection seems great. The bandwidth speed checker on their site reports 477kbs against a target of 460 for the service! Cheers and thanks to all, Colin Colin On Saturday 13 March 2004 22:05, Philip Ward wrote: > We got ADSL recently and I went with Force9. £21.99 a month and you get > 250Meg webspace plus 50MB cgi enabled webspace. I went on the Easy Start package at £25.00 a month. No Setup fees (Except the postage for posting the modem) They sent a modem Free a Binatone ADSL 500 USB Modem, which works under Linux (Getting it going takes a few manual commands(you might be able to automate it, but it works and that is enough for me) but once it is going is solid as a rock.). Force9 do not supply linux drivers, but I did get the link from a forum post You also get CGI, a MySQL server, fax to email service, web stats and lots of other things. I would reccomend them. -- Phil Deane http://www.MiracleExpress.force9.co.uk ___ Scottish mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://mailman.lug.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/scottish

We got ADSL recently and I went with Force9. £21.99 a month and you get 250Meg webspace plus 50MB cgi enabled webspace. The connection has been reliable for the month we've had it. As for modem/router I have been fighting an Alcatel USB modem for a friend's Mandrake laptop and eventually gave up and got a cheap router (Origo - £35 on ebay). No more problems. Phil. I'd recommend Nildram - http://www.gotadsl.co.uk/ - and Zen Internet - http://www.zenadsl.com/ - without hesitatation. Get a router to go with it - I didn't skimp and spent some cash on a four-port switch/router D-Link DSL-504 which goes well with my 16 IPs I might add! Re: [Scottish] Recommendations on ISDN service/provider?
Hey, Broadband's just came into my old mans area so I'm facing the same problems, well nearly. I know which ISP i am putting him with, because I'm with them and i know loads of people with them and they are _fantastic_ who is it may you ask? Freedom to Surf (www.f2s.com) they really are great. You may be able to find a slightly cheaper provider but not by much. I pay £22.50 per month including VAT. I need a modem for his server box (Linux machine that acts as a router/file server/print server/wireless access point) I put a fresh install of slackware on it, think it was 8.1. So its still got a 2.4 kernel. I built a web front end specifically for this box because i didn't like any of the router distros at that time. So basically i need a cheap (under £20) modem for this box which will work through USB. Still looking for one that is known to support Linux. I use e buyer all the time, they have a £13 modem with a connexant chip and some drivers are provided through www.linuxant.com but i don't know if drivers for this modem exist. Otherwise i'm going for a 1 port router which comes in at £23 on e buyer. Any ideas about the state of cheap modem support greatly appreciated. Re: [Scottish] Recommendations on ISDN service/provider?
I use Freedom to surf www.freedom2surf.net I pay £35 a month for a 1mb fixed IP... been perfectly happy with it. Although someone recommended Bulldog http://www.bulldogcommunications.com/ but I haven't heard of them As for modem's AFAIK it's a rather nasty Thomson (Alcatel) usb modem. My friend had one, that is until it caught fire, which was a bit worrying. I would personally stay away from them and buy a good ADSL modem/router George On 13 Mar 2004, at 14:51, Colin Fraser wrote: BT have finally got the lead out and are enabling our exchange this week!
