[sdre-l]: knapsack/sdre
i finally got my hands on the live cd a while ago. it rocks, even though it lacks a lot of that screaming quality we came to love. i really think joes bass lines were dominant throughout the whole album. the reverb was kind of annoying, and when Jeremy tried to scream in in circles, that failed, but it was still cool. anyway, if anybody was pissed of when knapsack broke up, well, now blair shenan (the lead singer/rythm guitarist) pulled together a new band (its still lacking a guitarist still, and i think he's borrowing two sundays best members). the band is called "(the) jealous sound"... and you can download three of their new mp3s at A HREF="http://user.aol.com/land79/js.html"mp3s from the jealous sound demo/A. by far "priceless" is the best, but all kick ass. please check them out. they deserve it. keith n.p. the jealous sound "priceless" (what else?) n.p. knapsack "silver sweepstakes" n.p. the gloira record "grace the snow is falling"
[sdre-l]: RE: amazon review
Here's a copy of the review that Jeremy supposedly gave to Amazon.com. Reviews The artist, Jeremy Enigk , October 22, 1999 Our album isn't what we intended for it to sound like Sub Pop screwed us big time. We weren't involved in the project of the "live" cd at all. In fact we didn't even approve the idea but they had us by contract. We have signed to Time Bomb records recently, and are quite happy with our current position. Again, sorry about the "new" cd. My voice is embarrasing during the first few songs. We appologize, and will make it up to you with our new record "The Shape of Sound", expected to be released by next March. Thanks and love - Jeremy Enigk
[sdre-l]: Bogus
Okay, ignore that review on Amazon.com that I leaked. Jeremy was baffled; "Of course it's bogus!" SDRE is going into the studio in Dec. if they can find a favorable producer and the record may be out in June. The name will NOT be "The shape of sound" as claimed on that amazon.com site. Developments on the website are being pondered by the band although nothing "new and creative" will be focused on til after the current chaos in SDRE disperses a bit. brian - :; `:. .:' :; .;' :' | :.:; `:.:':: .;' :' | :::;:.:; ` ;.'':' | `:. ``;:.:; ..:::''::.. :' .| Ansigod `:. `` .;'' ``;. :.::``| [EMAIL PROTECTED] `::: :: ` .| http://hubcap.clemson.edu/~bpmccal/ ..::`:: :; :; :: .;'| .../~bpmccal/sdre.html ;'' :: .:':: ::`:.:: :' | .../~bpmccal/moam.html ... :: `: ;' :: `::.| .../~bpmccal/hum/ ``:::... :: `:::: :: `| .../~bpmccal/hollow.html ```: `;... ..;' ::'''| SDRE:````::,,::'' `: |
[sdre-l]: video / vocals / etc.
As far as the picture, just how many times do we actually get to see any of the band playing their instruments? The camera men seem to favor teeny-bop headshots instead of full body shots. I mean, even Rolling Stones and Third Eye Blind videos get full body shots, and is any of their playing really important to see? And then there are William's grand side-shots, where the angle is very good, but at least 75% of the time they only go to that shot if Jeremy is not singing, kind of saying that Jeremy's the main camera attraction, and if he's not doing anything important (playing he music isn't important in teeny bot facial shots) then they might as well go to William for a few seconds, which means they miss out on some great drum madness. I was surprised they actually cut to him during his crazy parts of Rodeo Jones. I was a happy bunny then. I've got quite a few concerts on tape and all of them are taped like that. I guess in a way it makes sense because they want to film the person who's singing, since that's the part that's most often payed attention to when music is heard [not many people buy a CD when the vocals are horrid just to hear the bass or whatever] but it IS annoying at times. I mean, no disrespects to vocalists for bands, but being a bassist myself, I really like to watch the bassist to see how things are played and such. And I really like looking at the non-vocalists play because most of the time, they're the most interesting people to watch. That's why I like seeing shows live because I can focus on what *I* want to see, not what Camera Man #3 thinks I should see or whatever. But I do like how the SDRE video DOESNT have that "switching syndrome" which is when the people who edit the video flip from a shot of the singer to the drummer to the bassist to the singer to the guitarist and flipping back and forth every two seconds. They actually focus on one person for several seconds at a time, which is nice. The club in the video seems really tiny...has anyone been there? The stage just looks really small, like they were all playing on top of a refrigerator box or something ;o) Yes I've noticed Jeremy's voice has changed a bit...he sounded very young on "Diary" [I think that's what I like about his voice though..it's very boy-ish but he has such a range..it's just cool] and now it sounds more mature. But I notice voice changes often with bands. If you've got all of the albums by some band that's got 3 or more, listen to the first one, then the latest one and you will most likely hear a major change. I was listening to the first Rage Against The Machine album the other day and I noticed Zach's voice has matured, and I bought the new Alice In Chains boxed set yesterday and you hear the early 1987 demos and Layne's voice sounds SO young [well he was 20 or so then anyway...but...] and now it's matured. It goes for almost any band, really, you can hear a big difference. But then again, the music matures too. Considering the "Meeting People is Easy" proposed version of SDRE: that would necessitate WORK on subpop's part. Don't think so. Heh heh, yeah, it's definitely more work than mastering a taping of a live show. Peace, Kris. n/p: Manic Street Preachers "From Despair To Where"
Re: [sdre-l]: live video problems
everyones knocking the new live stuff saying this and that but oh don't get me wrong i love sdre ect... Keep in mind these shows were taped at towards the end of a very long tour. I've seen a few shows of sdre and some of the shows the scratchy dirty scream voice was there and others it wasn't. Jeremy voice is still great anyway and the songs vocal melodies and hooks are still unbelievable wheather he''s screaming or not. I guess this record just wasn't that big for me because they were songs that I have known for along time its not like the excitement of new material. But hopefully that won't be too far away.
[sdre-l]: Nothing wrong with LIVE
Let me say I have seen Sunny Day twice, and both times they played exactly like they did on the live CD and video. People complain he doesnt scream. People say that is what is wrong with How It Feels, I think that is what is right with it. His voice is much more beautiful when he isnt screaming, especially when he changes old screaming parts in old songs. How It Feels is by far their best CD. Another thing I note, Sunny Day is the only "emo" band I listen to. So many underground and local punk bands have started to turn their sounds to "emo". So Suny Day has gotten away from that, and one very noticible part of an punk band gone "emo'', too much screaming. I hope the next CD sounds more like Frog Queen than Diary. But its just me, and I love you all! PEACE! matt
Re: [sdre-l]: Live problems
yeah, i was watching the video yesterday when i got it, and i too noticed certain places where the sync between the picture and sound was a little off. kinda sucked to see will hit a cymbal and then a second later hear the sound, but ah well. the video overall was still cool. wish they had left in the talking parts between songs though, that woulda been cool. it seemed to me that sub-pop was somewhat careless putting it together though. they had a typo on the band name on the back cover, which is something that happens. but then also, on the video itself, they had the wrong date for the concert, even when they had it correct on the cover. strange. was kinda disappointed i never got on camera. *laughs* john "i've kept my life at a distance- to live it and not write it down is to deny its existence" -Arlie Carstens Table19: http://www.angelfire.com/wa2/Table19 __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

Did anyone ever see the movie For the Cash with William and Jeremy? It was supposed to play in the Seattle area towards the end of October. Chris
Re: [sdre-l]: voice change?
"okay. here's my opinion. (and i've been holding out on this for a long time)okay, i'm a HUGE fan of sdre.BUT i just can't help but cringe when i hear jeremy do the old diary and lp2 songs live now. i mean he JUST WON'T SCREAM! it drives me crazy. i know it's petty...but the reason why i get so emotional listening to diary and lp2 is because of the contrast of smooth gorgeous vocals and screaming. and jeremy has like the best scream ever, in my opinion. i watched the live video recently, and there's one part on "the prophet" where he tries REALLY hard...but can't do it. i almost want to cry. every time i watch that video now, i have to watch the old 120 minutes performance where he DOES scream doing "seven" and just wish that the old days were here again. okay, i don't know where this post is going...i just thought i'd put my two cents in. okay peoplestake care." I've been feeling that way for some time too..why doesn't he? All the live stuff I have he doesn't scream..I mean "Song About an Angel" for instance has to be one of my fave songs especially the "Although you hit hard I still come back.." and "Running behind..." parts..he screams those on Diary but not live. Same with Rodeo Jones ect.

I have the How It Feels To Be Something On - 7" for sale. It's NEVER been played, just sat there looking nice and new. As I'm sure you know (and I copied and pasted from the official site) there was a limited press of 3000 by Sub Pop before the release of How It Feels To Be Something On. Honestly, I don't know what it's worth, so I'll sell it to whoever gives me the best offer by Monday, 11-15-99. you can look at it here: http://www.sunnydayrealestate.com/hifi/feels7.html Thanks, Matthew Adamson Portland, OR
