[sdre-l]: TRT the best album of 2000? SDRE vs Elliott

2000-06-26 Thread Charles Morris

HI,
How many people on the list are going to the st. louis show on 6-26?
I'll be there and try to give a review to the list. I got TRT on tuesday
when it came out, and it is great. They really have a great new sound.
Some of the of the ambient parts almost remind me of Moby. It's just an
amazing album, and I can listen to it over and over without getting bored.
Some really good releases came out on June 20, of course TRT, and I'm
not a huge deftones fan, but i'm curious to hear that, and Strung Out has a
new EP out and it is great if you're into super fast, tight metal/punk.
There's some great guitar and drumming on that EP.
The only band that I believe could surpass TRT is possibly Elliott When
their new album False Cathedrals comes out in August. If anyone doesn't
have Elliott's 1st album US Songs GET IT NOW!!
Sorry for wasting your time. Only about 19 hours until the show

[sdre-l]: The Bottleneck

2000-06-26 Thread Caleb Zenitsky

I saw them last night in Lawerence. That was the most amazing experience of
my life I've never felt that much raw emotion at a show before! I
couldn't help but cry when they played The Ocean, 8, and In Circles. I can't
top that show. I'm just waiting for the next time they come around. It was
so great. Nobody probably cares about this, but I was right where they were
coming out on stage, and I was the first to see Jeremy. I started clapping
and he looked at me and and said hi. I know that sounds stupid but it meant
a lot to me. I think I saw you, Dyll. I was the short kid by the speakers
with the blue Return of the Frog Queen shirt on. Thanks for letting me
blabber on. Later.

[sdre-l]: sdre in larry town

2000-06-26 Thread Sheets,Jason

i just got back from lawrence. i am tired and i ache, so this will be a
quick rundown of the show there last night at the lovely bottleneck.

1. there was a tornado watch all night long, and the weather got to be quite
nasty. fortunately though, there was no tornado, although dan said it would
be really cool if one were to occur. yeah, he must be from seattle.

2. if you ever go to the bottleneck craving a black tan, prepare to be
disappointed. way too much bass, not nearly enough guinness.

3. i finally bought the rising tide. i didn't have time to mail order it and
get it before the show, nor did i want to pay $18 for it at sam goody. i am
happy now :)

4. i had heard no knife a few times before, but have never seen them live.
well, they gave me a thorough ass-kicking. i loved them. i was compelled to
buy two of their CDs - the one eveyone talks about on here (automatons or
something like that) and the drunk on the moon one because i have never
owned a CD with the word "drunk" in the title.

5. i was somewhat distracted by the couple 2 feet in front of me who were
about to get down and fuck on the floor. i mean, really, i enjoy soft porn
as much as the next guy (ok, maybe not) but not when i'm trying to enjoy a
live band. the funny part was, while they were making out and groping each
other, the guy was watching the band. the girl looked like she belonged at a
britney spears concert.

6. apparently, the sound for no knife "like, totally fucking sucked major
fucking ass" because they couldn't afford their own sound person for the
tour and had to use the "pussy sound guy, that fucking moron who can't even
fucking run that shitty ass soundboard" at the bottleneck. this i overheard
from the merch guy, whom i sat near for a short bit. also, when he's not
touring with no knife, he lives in prague. he can't speak czech though.

7. sunny day, finally. after their fat roadie tested everything for 20
minutes they took to the stage. because i just got the new album last night,
i was familiar with only a few of the new songs. the opener i did not know,
but here is a rough set list. i don't remember the exact order, so i'll just
list the songs i know, and surely someone else here will have the exact
order. they played pillars, guitar and video games, tearing at my heart,
one, the ocean, j'nuh (which blew my ass off, it was amazing), killed by an
angel, every shining time (which was great with the keyboards), disappear,
snibe, and a couple others i think. the encore was 8 (!), the rising
tide (with the extra cool stuff at the end), and in circles, which the crowd
absolutely went crazy for.

8. i thought the back up guys did a cool job; the singer had a nice voice
and the bass player was cool. the overall sound was okay, but it wasn't as
good as when i saw them the last time (when greg did the sound...). jeremy
was in prime form, will had the greatest smile on his face the whole time,
and the bearded one was at one with his guitar, not to mention all over the
stage. he broke a couple strings on in circles and about busted his face
open with his own guitar a few times. he was defintiely into it.

9. the crowd was pretty good, too. no one threw up on my girlfriend's feet
this time, i didn't get hit on by a hooker, and the police didn't come in to
arrest anyone (which all happened at one of two times i saw them last year).
there was some annoying yelling of songs (some guy kept yelling "diary" - i
wasn't sure if he was kidding or not) and a few people who were obviously
dragged there by friends and were not into the bands at all.

10. all in all, it was a great show. they keep getting better every time i
see them. seeing the new stuff live really helped appreciate it more, just
like it did when how it feels came out - the only way to truly appreciate
their music is to see and hear it live.

i guess that wasn't so short after all.

i will go to bed now.

-jason.

[sdre-l]: lawrence show

2000-06-26 Thread WundaKid

well...i don't have much time to comment on the lawrence show
but it was definitely a fine, fine show...i've seen them there three times
and this was the best performance i have caught yet...the level of intensity
was huge...you could literally feel the energy in the room.

as far as the bass player, keyboard/third guitar guys go...they're solid (i
was a bit annoyed with the keyboardist's singing...but only at certain
times...other times he was right on and it made a great additional layer).
the bass player was super solid and every part seemed a sort of second
nature to the guy...

some interesting comments...
they played "every shining time you arrive"...didn't expect to hear that
added this amazing riff/jam to the end of the rising tide (which has been
mentioned on the list before)
jeremy and dan were switching guitars like mad...i'd say once every other
song
jeremy added this rad rad rad vocal part to the end of "tearing in my
heart"...as well as the bridge in snibe

oh, and i made some sunny day converts out of friends that attended the show
with me that were absolutely mesmerized...how could you not be when tons of
kids are standing there screaming right back at jeremy..."we stand in the
marketplace"...it was huge, the show was huge, everything was huge.

good show
great show

[sdre-l]: The Bottleneck (but beware-it's long pointless, read if bored)

2000-06-26 Thread Savesthedyll

I gotsta say, i agree w/jewie over there-the show was friggin' RAD! I didn't
cry, but yeah... i was in the back (heh-next to Jim Suptic of Get Up Kids
fame (yeah, i saw 40% of the band there last night... plus Chris f/Appleseed
Cast)) rockin' out... one of the best shows i've ever really gotten into.
This isn't like, a review, or anything, but it was simply fantastic seeing
Sunny Day for the 1st time. It was so strange hearing them play 8, since
that's the 1st song i'd ever heard f/them (yes, f/the Batman Forever
soundtrack, actually... tsk tsk). It was awesome that after every song
ended, i had to just smile shake my head b/c i was simply amazed.

Well, i said this wasn't a review, but hey, i s'pose i'll give my outline of
the night, anyway...

... Me my friends (who'd basically never heard Sunny Day before) got there
'bout 1/2-way into No Knife's set-i'd heard 'em before, but hadn't had any of
their records, so i didn't know too much... other than to expect good things
outta them. I wasn't disappointed, 'cuz they rocked hardcore, dawg. Very
impressive musicianship (i.e. different time signatures impressive playing
('specially f/the bass player (i think they said he was new) who plays like
Nate))), the mix was friggin' GOOD for 'em (maybe a bit better than Sunny
Day, but still, both were very powerful). Anyway, yeah... we heard 'bout 5
songs f/No Knife after their set i did 3 incredibly stupid things in the
hopes of trying to see Sunny Day better (b/c i knew all the kids in front of
me didn't deserve it haha)... ended up trading two rather good spots for a
space in the back where i could hardly see anything but the top of Jeremy's
head all of Dan's grinning wigglyness.

So yeah, I saw Will come out 1st in all his wife-beatered glory they opened
w/... i'm drawing a blank (sorry, guess that means i'm not a true fan).
Throughout the night, i heard idiots yelling out "DIARY!!!" What the heck is
THAT all about?

Anyway, my sister's kickin' me off (guess that means i'm an emo-pussy, eh?),
so i s'pose i just wasted 10 minutes of your time by writing a post that was
pretty much worthless-i'll try to be a bit more concise later on.

I've never been to a show that accepts credit cards, and I doubt if this
one will be an exception. Your best bet, if all you have is a credit
card, is suck up the fee and get a cash advance, which you should be able
to do at any ATM. And I reckon calling the venue that they're playing at
might be a good idea, just in case they are some sorta special place that
does do credit card merch merchandise. Of course, online ordering accepts
credit cards (at a premium..).

2000-06-26 Thread john london

the lawrence show was amazing! to clear up any confusion as to how many
people are playing with them, here it is...besides jeremy, dan, and
will, they have a bass player (the guy from heroic doses, i can't
remember his name), a guy who plays 3rd guitar and keyboards and does
backup vocals, and they also have a guy doing some percussion, making a
total of 6 people on stage. the backup vocals were right on! no one
could match jeremy's voice as well as this guy. all the new stuff
sounded straight off of the album. i was very impressed with him, the
keyboards added so much to the hiftbso stuff, as well as the new stuff.
and like i said, the backup vocals were so right on, and so jeremy. the
bass player was also great, in will's words, "...the best bass player
i've ever worked with." no lie.
i don't know if it's been mentioned, but they also have the pillars/gvg
7" for sale at the the shows.
here's the setlist...fool in the photograph/pillars/one/the ocean/killed
by an angel/guitar and video games/snibe/estya/disappear/tearing in my
heart/j'nuh/(encore)the rising tide/in circles
here's a question to everyone who's been to a show...did they do an
extra long jam (ending?) to the rising tide? they did something after
that song and i don't know if it was a long ending or something else.
the weather was a little inclimate in kansas last night and dan made a
funny remark about wouldn't it be cool if a tornado just came right
through this place.
that's about it from me until austin and dallas...

2000-06-26 Thread Mike Roblyer

Yeah,

Me and my wife drove up all the way from Tulsa to
Lawrence to see Sunny Day, but it was spur of the
moment and the show was sold out, but it was cool
cause Jeremy was in the Borders bookstore looking for
thier CD and he finally found it in the new section
which he looked surprised.

Then he "accidently" ha ha put a couple of thier CD's
over the deftones section that was on top of thiers.
It was cool just to see him walking around. Oh, well
I am going to try to make Dallas.

I have waited so long to see them and they will never
come to Oklahoma. But I will one day

Just a heads up for you guys who don't have tickets
to the show at irving plaza and planning to try to buy scalped tickets. Be
Extremely Careful! Many of these scalpers make fake tickets and try to
sell them for like 60 bucks. This happened to a friend of mine at the Beck
show. He bought a ticket for 60 dollars and they wouldn't let him in
because they were fake. he was so pissed.

So watch your ass.
