Re: [SaF] Meaning of these terms
Emilio Guia: | | I received a message saying: The following message was sent to you as an | opt-in subscriber to | Uproar/iwin.. | | Please, what means the terms opt-in and Uproar/iwin? Could someone explain | me these, please?. Opt-in means that the sender claims that you asked him to send you the message. That is, signed up for it. Maybe you did, maybe you didn't. Spammers often claim that you opted-in, because if you had, well then their spam wouldn't be spam--because you solicited it. I don't know about Uproar, but iWin is the site of a pretty fair search engine where you can by using their site earn points--in this case, chances in a drawing to win free merchandise. Does this sound familiar? Karlo

to opt is to choose, or to take an option (choice). When you subscribe or sign up for an e-mail newsletter, you are said to opt-in or choose voluntarily to receive the mailings. Uproar generally means loud noises, as in mobs shouting, but here it seems to be the name of the newsletter. My guess is that iWin is a provider connected with Windows. Someone else may have signed you up as a prank, or you may have clicked a link somewhere that could be interpreted as your willingness to receive information by e-mail. If you don't want it, send a reply message saying unsubscribe. Best wishes, Helen H. Gordon

Uproar.com and Iwin.com are part of a larger company called Flipside, which is based in New York and owned by multinational entertainment conglomerate Vivendi Universal, owner of (among MANY other things) the video-game character Crash Bandicoot. http://corporate.uproar.com/index.asp (lotsa luck getting this to display properly in Netscape...) -- BOB

Does this sound familiar? The site you're referring to is Iwon.com. I think iWin is a cheap spammer idea to bait people who are in to that kind of thing. Ed
