Re: [Server-devel] [XSCE] [Off Topic] More Linux users facing skype issues
I have been testing the Ventrilo server on my XO1.5 XSCE and it works well. With connection from AP to schoolserver via my Android phone and window machines I can have voice conversation. There is no Ventrilo client for Linux. Have not been able to run the alternative Mumble client on the XO. Nice if XO can then be used for the voice communication as it will get 8 children/teachers highly excited. Below is what we found on the XSCE on followup 7 weeks later in the wild. Hope that will help in future installations... -- Dear T. K., Here's a detailed explanation of what happened that day. We found that the /library/cache/swap.state is sized 47G, which occupies the whole partition of /. I know by default during the installation the fedora will part the whole harddisk into two parts, for root (/) 50G, and for /home the remaining. However, in XSCE's setting, the main content is put into /library which belongs to / partition. The reason why swap.state is so large is unknow. However, we removed the file and restart the squid service, it becomes normal now. To prevent future event from happening, we also _bind_ mount the /library/cache to home directory. As I understand it, openWRT (from the Shuttleworth project) can be installed on a TP-Link router. It can be configured to serve connected XOs (such as in a classroom) on a mesh. It could also serve as a gateway to the school server's LAN. If this could work, then the schoolserver would not provide DHCP (since the mesh potato routers would have fixed addresses on the schoolserver LAN) and would not provide ejabberd (since that function is served by the classroom-level mesh). Presumably each classroom mesh would be a subnet of the LAN so that openWRT would act as a gateway for messages directed at the schoolserver. Is my understanding in the ballpark? Is there someone in the community who is working on this capability or is an appropriate reference for further information? Re: [Server-devel] XS Community Edition 0.3 (Release Candidate 1)
Great work. I installed the XSCE on a Class 10 SD card today to run on a XO1.75. Still get a blank screen towards the end of the installation. Connection seems working well so far. Manage to connect a bunch of XO to test. Tested two registration and was able to autologin to Moodle on OS 12.1.0 but not on a 13.1.0. Thanks for all the hardwork. Re: [Server-devel] XS Community Edition 0.3 (Release Candidate 1)
Some XSCE Release 1 testing outcomes. Some happy news. 1. Registration went OK for 12.1, 13.1 on XO-1.75, Soas-Fedora17 and Dextrose3 (XO-1) 2. Autologin works for all of them into Moodle (http://schoolserver.local/moodle). 3. /usr/bin/ds-backup.sh works for 12.1, 13.1 (new patch applied). New files seen in the /library/users/ 4. Not sure what is needed for SoAS (is there a ds-backup.sh file?) or Dextrose3 (Bld 96 Dextrose International). In Dextrose always get Failed Error - Call Process: [None] when I click on the Journal Backup/Restore commands. 5. As usual clicking on the backup on Moodle gives the This user has no backup data yet (or data compatbility) . Will this ever work ? -Original Message- From: David Farning [mailto:dfarn...@activitycentral.com] Sent: Monday, May 20, 2013 02:49 PM To: tkk...@nurturingasia.com Cc: 'Adam Holt', 'server-devel' Subject: Re: [Server-devel] XS Community Edition 0.3 (Release Candidate 1) Do you have one of the early 1.75 models? Re: [Server-devel] [ANNOUNCE] XSCE 0.2.1 - Phoebe
The installation is a breeze now! I am sure alot of work has been putted in over the past 24 hours! Manage to get it running with 2 USB-Ethernet plugin with wireless turned off and power management off. When it works it works!! I will for more testing. The XO-1.75-server seems to freeze quite predictable now after 10-20 minutes. Only way is to reboot again with power off button. Will run normally again and then freeze. Don't seems to have experience this in previous installations. Re: [Server-devel] Backup of XO 1.75 on XS 0.7
All this are working fine and the registration has created the necessary files in the XS 0.7 with the serial number, etc. Just that nothing seems to happen after a long wait after I done a force backup with ds-backup.sh I installed the older XS 0.6 to see if things work. Re: [Server-devel] Backup of XO 1.75 on XS 0.7
Yes I am aware that setting the domain is different in the 0.6 0.7. Loading 0.6 everything seems to work - ejabberctl and ds-backup. I tried so MANY times to use the kickstart with 0.7 and after doing all the necessary configuration I get the error in ejabberd process - i.e. ejabberdctl connected-users will reveal errors. Without ejabberd running or http runnig at least I am able to support 10 XO via a external AP and a wired WAN from another USBEthernet. Congtatulation...Nice feeling to see it working. I now have my SoAS registered at the SS and I left it online for 2 hours..It is backing up my stuff automatically and across the globe. Agree that the next step is how to make the information useful. As I look at the backup information I have problems figuring out what it is. The Altai A8 Super WiFi Base Station will be installed in one of the primary schools at Thimphu to provide wireless broadband access to the campus areas in this district. The long range technology of the A8 helps extend the WiFi signal to 1km in the line-of-sight environment, this helps shorten the deployment time and cost. Anthony Wong, President, China South East Asia of OLPC said, ?We appreciate the support from Altai. OLPC Asia will donate 200 units of wifi-enabled XO laptops to the schools in Bhutan for education purposes. Leveraging the Altai?s Super WiFi technology, the wireless broadband services will cover the campus areas in Thimphu. Teachers and students will be able to learn through the XO laptop and connect to them to the world.? Re: [Server-devel] Moodle/Server configuration for static IP external access
I can't really recommend that. Moodle and other services should only be in the internal network. Publishing it in the external network creates security issues. Yes, with a real school deployment this is a major concern. The XS I understand is designed for minimal maintence without this headache!! If you still want to do it, the best way is to ensure that the external users (external from the PoV of the XS) see the exact same DNS name for the server. Once you do that, images, forms and links will work. What settings do I need to configure for this? A message below from a volunter: -- Yesterday in TK's office, I experienced that registration takes only 2 second for one XO, so I guess the bandwidth requirement for registratoin process is very minimal. Yes, the registration is a simple process that does not use much bandwidth. In my viewpoint, the most important question in the Sat. stress test is whether we should use 1 AP or 3 AP. If it is feasible to register 50 PC via one AP simultaneously, then we are safe. Because it means that we can register 150 XO in chanenls 1, 6,11 simultaneously in SiChuan school. Then we can finish registering 450 XO in 3 rounds. What do you think? Given that registration is a light process and that it would actually be quite a logistical challenge to get 50 people to click Register in exactly the same moment, I guess your concerns are more about general prolonged usage of the network, rather than specifically the 1 second that is needed to register a laptop. You may have problems getting 50 people connected to the same access point (the step *before* registration). Some access points that I tested would crash after accepting the 31st user. Some are OK though. But in any situation, 50 is probably the maximum you'd want to put on 1 access point. You may want to focus on channels 6 and 11, because out of the box XOs which have not yet connected to an access point will start meshing on channel 1, this may saturate the spectrum with a sufficient number of laptops. I do not think you need rounds of registration. With sufficient access points, you should be able to get 450 users online concurrently. Having insufficient access points will be a problem because the XOs automatically connect to familiar networks, so it will be logistically difficult to get the first round of children to disconnect to allow for the second round. And as for post-registration... As far as I can tell, the XS has not seen much field use with such a large number of users concurrently signed on ejabberd, so your feedback will be very useful. We have schools of similar size here in the Paraguayan deployment, but not everyone has been taught about registration and collaboration yet, so we're only at about 100 users online at any one time. (and actually ejabberd is not coping very well with that, see my emails about ejabberd CPU usage) Daniel ___ Server-devel mailing list Server-devel@lists.laptop.org http://lists.laptop.org/listinfo/server-devel

Yes, the hostname step is needed for 0.5.2 (the install instructions do mention it ;-) ) 3. Registered (first) with a Chinese XO (3 chinese character as name) 4. Re: [Server-devel] XS 0.6 preview
Yes,.. the culprit is the Browser version!! My apologies. I had 2 English XOs and one was 102 and later when I used software update the next XO work!! Umm.. and sorry for all the pain. Now I need to tell the Chinese team how they can update the browser to 102 as it is version 98!! What about the ds-restore view .. could it be the browser as it does not show the chinese!! BTW what if we would like to get into jabber view? How to view like what we did in the past with port 5280? Cheers.. and at least we can have a little break!! -Original Message- From: Martin Langhoff [mailto:martin.langh...@gmail.com] Sent: Tuesday, May 19, 2009 05:37 PM To: tkk...@nurturingasia.com Cc: 'XS Devel' Subject: Re: [Server-devel] XS 0.6 preview On Tue, May 19, 2009 at 9:43 AM, tkk...@nurturingasia.com wrote: More test result for interpretation and debugging Cool. To do that, go to the 'home view' and change it from the 'ring view' to the 'list view' using the icons in the top-right corner of the screen. Just want to make sure that you have Browse version 102 on all your test machines :-) Use this english XO as a first registration with the user name of: t.k. kang Registration O.K. and is display via /home/idmgr/list_registration t.k. kang SHC84... From browser I try: schoolserver.olpcasia.org Moodle login display but no automatic login The steps you are following for debugging are correct (but you need to add the 'reboot after registration' step). When I follow the same steps I have no problems to login with users with spaces, names or extended utf-chars. Now I login as admin and browse list of user. 2 user found t.k. kang sh...@olpcasia.org Never Click on t.k. kang and then on the Backup tab Get message: Datastore is corrupt, or unknown format I've just checked -- that problably means that there is no backup yet, the errors got mixed up when I added datastore version 1 support. You need to either wait ~1 hour for the backup to be performed or run it manually. To run it manually, open the terminal and execute ds-backup.py I've just fixed that error message in Moodle so it reports the right message. ... Will do the 3rd registration BUT with a Chinese XO I just grabbed an XO, gave it a nickname of 唔好?Y???Y去 :-) , registered it, rebooted it, and then when I went to Moodle it logged me in, automagically. I can confirm this is a problem with the 0.5.2 version -- apologies. The 0.6 code, which displays the backups in the Moodle UI, does the right thing -- it serves the correct utf-8 chars. Once I installed the fonts-chinese package, it displayed perfectly in the listing. We have an XS 0.6 preview to play with. If you look at http://xs-dev.laptop.org/xs/other/ you'll find an iso (usual anaconda installer) and an img.gz. The iso is the usual Anaconda deal. The img file can be dd'd into an SD card, and it will Just Boot on an XO -- see notes @ http://wiki.laptop.org/go/XS-on-XO The installation process is significantly simplified. On first boot (from either install method), you need to issue: /etc/sysconfig/olpc_scripts/domain_config your base domain and restart. That's it, no more fiddling with ejabberd. (Actually, I lie -- for Squid to work properly you'll want to set /etc/sysconfig/network properly. Hope to fix that soon.). [Server-devel] XS testing for Chinese English XO
Greeting. This is my first message to the list! I am working on getting a XS server working for deployment in China this summer. Manage to do more testing to see if I could replicate problems I had previously. I can repeat the following with both the chinese and english XOs with a 0.52 XS that has yum updated: 1. User name with space (e.g. tk kang) have problems for the moodle account creation. When I click on the tk kang at the moodle interface it say no profile have been created. I check with the moodle admin account and it confirm that an account was not created with the machine serialID 2. When I change back to the normal name of tkkang a moodle account is created and works O.K. 3. Hence chinese names (double bytes) will have the same issue as describe above. 4. Have not solved the problem of not chinese character in the ds-restore view. When downloaded to the chinese XOs machine it display the chinese activity normally. For fun I created video of the XS bootup and my testing environment. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpZBkNWdtIMfeature=channel_page Cheers and hope to provide more test information as we go along. ___ Server-devel mailing list Server-devel@lists.laptop.org http://lists.laptop.org/listinfo/server-devel
