Re: [Server-devel] [XSCE] [Off Topic] More Linux users facing skype issues

2016-04-06 Thread tkkang
I have been testing the Ventrilo server on my XO1.5 XSCE and it works well.
With connection from AP to schoolserver via my Android phone and window
machines I can have voice conversation. There is no Ventrilo client for Linux.
Have not been able to run the alternative Mumble client on the XO.

Nice if XO can then be used for the voice communication as it will get 8
children/teachers highly excited.

Cheers

Have seen my son use this and host his chat session with teammates in game play
10 years ago. It has been around for long time and works well for him.

Nice if it can run on Sugar or can be a XSCE addon!

Also bigbluebutton is an opensource videoconferencing system.

Re: [Server-devel] [XSCE] XSCE usage analysis: Malaysia Deployment

2014-04-26 Thread tkkang
Below is what we found on the XSCE on followup 7 weeks later in the wild.

Hope that will help in future installations...

--
Dear T. K.,

Here's a detailed explanation of what happened that day.

We found that the /library/cache/swap.state is sized 47G, which occupies the
whole partition of /. I know by default during the installation the fedora
will part the whole harddisk into two parts, for root (/) 50G, and for /home
the remaining. However, in XSCE's setting, the main content is put into
/library which belongs to / partition.

The reason why swap.state is so large is unknow. However, we removed the file
and restart the squid service, it becomes normal now.

To prevent future event from happening, we also _bind_ mount the /library/cache
to home directory.

Best regards,
Weida

Subject: [Server-devel] mesh potato

Hi,

There was discussion of this at the SF sprint.

As I understand it, openWRT (from the Shuttleworth project) can be
installed on
a TP-Link router. It can be configured to serve connected XOs (such as
in a classroom)
on a mesh. It could also serve as a gateway to the school server's LAN.

If this could work, then the schoolserver would not provide DHCP (since
the mesh potato routers would
have fixed addresses on the schoolserver LAN) and would not provide
ejabberd (since that function is
served by the classroom-level mesh).

Presumably each classroom mesh would be a subnet of the LAN so that
openWRT would act as a gateway
for messages directed at the schoolserver.

Is my understanding in the ballpark?

Is there someone in the community who is working on this capability or
is an appropriate reference for further
information?

Couple of postinstall notes:

xs-authserver has some sort of conflict with the library versions that IIAB

pip install --upgrade --force-reinstall Werkzeug Flask
systemctl restart xs-authserver

We are interested in doing some load testing for network hardware and

My dream setup would be 30-60 XO1's arranged semi-permanently in

Does anyone have experience with this type of testing? Does anyone

After three months of hard work and three weeks of working out the
kinks in the release process, XSCE 0.3 is ready for its final release.

We went conservative this release. Emphasis on stability meant less time
for new features.

* XSCE now runs on the XO-1.5,XO-1.75 and XO-4.

* Modular Architecture: cleanly integrate extendable services.

* XSCE runs on the XOs' current OS 13.1.0 (we discovered some wrinkles with
13.2.0 which push its use off to the next release)

* Moodle is Back!

* Content filtering via openDNS.com

* Script for formatting of SD cards, and integration into system for
content storage and memory extending swap file (does not work on XO4's)

Grab an XO-1.5, XO-1.75 or a XO-4 to give XSCE 0.3 give a whirl:

If you are just getting started with XSCE we suggest using the instruction

1. Able to run with 2 USB-ethernet adaptor with one hardwire to the internet
replacing the XO wireless internet connection.

2. Collaborative work e.g. few registered machine running memorize game while
6 XOs non-registered running write.

3. SOAS have problem starting collaborative activities.

Conclusion: So far so good :-)

Some XSCE Release 1 testing outcomes. Some happy news.

1. Registration went OK for 12.1, 13.1 on XO-1.75, Soas-Fedora17 and Dextrose3
(XO-1)

2. Autologin works for all of them into Moodle
(http://schoolserver.local/moodle).

3. /usr/bin/ds-backup.sh works for 12.1, 13.1 (new patch applied). New files
seen in the /library/users/

4. Not sure what is needed for SoAS (is there a ds-backup.sh file?) or
Dextrose3 (Bld 96 Dextrose International). In Dextrose always get Failed Error
- Call Process: [None] when I click on the Journal Backup/Restore commands.

5. As usual clicking on the backup on Moodle gives the This user has no
backup data yet (or data compatbility) . Will this ever work ?

Do you have one of the early 1.75 models? I get a similar install
glitch on one of my early 1.75s. Somewhere near the end of the install
the screen goes blank if I haven't poked the touchpad lately.

Would you mind filing a bug about the moodle login at
https://sugardextrose.org/projects/xsce/issues ?

It will be our first public bug reported to the project :) After hours
and hours working late into the night and talking to each other We
will finally have feedback from a potential user!

A big thank you to anyone who can test RC1, almost three months after
XSCE 0.2 -- we now have big changes for all to try out with the
imminent XSCE 0.3:

   * XSCE runs on XOs' brand new OLPC OS 13.1.0,
thanks to XSCE's fast migration from Fedora 17 to 18 these past weeks
   * XSCE now runs on XO-4 and XO-1.5, in addition to the its XO-1.75
origins--with x86 x64 testing just now beginning in earnest.
Highly experimental XO-1 functionality now proven, tho NOT advised!
   * Auto-recognition and mounting of USB hard drives
   * Modular Architecture: cleanly integrate extendable services,
 perhaps soon including http://internet-in-a-box.org
 successfully tested this wkd: http://schoolserver.org/0.3/IIAB
   * Full offline installs possible going forward:
set up your own USB memory stick installer.
 Compare To: http://wiki.laptop.org/go/OS_Builder
   * Moodle is Back!
   * Content filtering via openDNS.com and dansguardian.org

So grab an old XO-1.5 or similar and give XSCE 0.3 RC1 give these

The installation is a breeze now! I am sure alot of work has been putted in
over the past 24 hours!

Manage to get it running with 2 USB-Ethernet plugin with wireless turned off
and power management off. When it works it works!!

I will for more testing. The XO-1.75-server seems to freeze quite predictable
now after 10-20 minutes. Only way is to reboot again with power off button.
Will run normally again and then freeze.

Don't seems to have experience this in previous installations.

 Hi,

It gives me pleasure to announce the 0.2.1 release
 (Phoebe-http://www.flickr.com/photos/tiayiti/8477848448 ;-) ) of the

both need to be attached when the install is run and the wifi should be off.

 Hi,

It gives me pleasure to announce the 0.2.1 release
 (Phoebe-http://www.flickr.com/photos/tiayiti/8477848448 ;-) ) of the
School Server Community Edition project. Since the 0.1 release nearly a
month ago, a significant amount of core XS functionality has been included.

With this release, we have a largely functional schoolserver, with all
the core services up and running. We have tested this on the XO-1.75 and
the generic x86 big iron, and look forward to contributors (hackers,
testers, folks wanting to run pilots).

 =Download Install=
Detailed instructions can be found here:
 http://wiki.laptop.org/go/User:Holt/XS_Community_Edition/0.2/Installing

Here are some steps to try it out on an XO-1.75 laptop (Installation
 requires a working internet connection):

 su -
 cd /etc/yum.repos.d
 wget http://build.activitycentral.com/xsce-stable.repo
 yum -y install xs-config-xo
 bootstrap-xo

 REBOOT

 su -
 xs-setup

 REBOOT

 =Contribute=
The code for this server resides at
 http://sugardextrose.org/projects/xs-config/repository . People
interested in hacking should clone the repo and feel free to send
 patches to server-devel.

There are weekly skype meetings on Thursdays 8pm EST for people who can
 join in those.

 ==Test==
We encourage users to break the server, find weird use cases and create
 issues here:

 http://sugardextrose.org/projects/xs-config/issues

Here are some basic testing notes to get started with

 http://wiki.laptop.org/go/User:Holt/XS_Community_Edition/0.2/Test_Plan

 ==Known issues/quirks==
 * SELinux and XSCE don't mix well so far. If SELinux isn't disabled
already, please do so before/after install.
 * The machine needs to be rebooted after installing the server for
 everything to work smoothly.
 * On xo the hostname is automatically changed to schoolserver.local. On
non-xo it is whatever the user set it to, so if you want
schoolserver.local you must edit /etc/sysconfig/network and issue the
 hostname command.

2013-03-10 Thread tkkang
Yes I am aware that setting the domain is different in the 0.6 0.7. Loading
0.6 everything seems to work - ejabberctl and ds-backup.

I tried so MANY times to use the kickstart with 0.7 and after doing all the
necessary configuration I get the error in ejabberd process - i.e. ejabberdctl
connected-users will reveal errors.

So I need to bypass the Kickstart. Now I am getting back to the old way - CD
bootup instead of USB installation and see what happen.

Setting the doamin on 0.6 is different from doing so on 0.7

On 0.6 you would do: /etc/sysconfig/olpc-scripts/domain_config example.org
On 0.7 you would do: xs-setup example.org

Be sure to use the kickstart option on 0.7. Let it be

[Server-devel] Schoolserver 0.7 installation: ejabberd testing

2013-03-07 Thread tkkang
I am installed the latest 0.7 schoolserver and testing it with XO 1.75 loaded
with 13.1.0 (with latest build 35). I did the necessary xs-setup (reboot)
xs-setup-network (reboot). Register 2 XO and auto login was OK for Moodle via
wireless access.

On my XO I type olpc-netstatus. Telepathy: salut but Jabber is blank

On my newly XS I type: ejabberdctl connectedusers but I UNABLE to check who is
login in but an error in the ejabberd error log:

ERROR REPORT

E (0.36.0): ejabbed_configL 551): Error reading Mnesia data spool files
ejabber needs read write access in the directory
/var/lib/ejabberd/spool

Maybe the problenm is a change in the comouter hostname or a change in Erlange
node name bla bla

Is this normal as I am not getting information on XO login unlike when I
install the XSCE on my XO!

When I type /usr/bin/ds-backup.sh I get a return prompt instantnously. Again is
this expected.

In short how do I know if I really have a XS with backup, ejebbard, etc running
with the 0.7 schoolserver?

Thanks and advice appreciated

Is your 1.75 locked?

For the 1st installation I did not have the USB-Ethernet-AP connection
 plugin.

Your best bet is to have all your interfaces plugging in before booting
the XO, otherwise when we detect the number of interfaces we will miss
installing some components that is vital to using the XS as a router. We
prompt if we detect less than what is required for a router, but I
prefer to have the interfaces appear in the same order as what the
kernel will find if just rebooted. This is more of an issue when your
using 2 usb based interfaces and not using the XO's internal wifi.

Maybe I should use another XO to start all over again!

I would prefer if you could use 12.1.0-21 as a starting point as that is
what we are testing with. If you can't do that, please ensure your
network adaptor is inserted before booting then run the install.

Thanks for the detail step by step. Hope I have better luck the next time.

Just to clarify, you're on a 1.75 running 12.1.0? And before you started
doing anything in the instructions, did you plug in a USB wifi dongle
connected to a powered up AP?

My usual process for getting ready to install is:

 1. Flash 12.1.0 on a 1.75
 2. It reboots itself, I set the buddy name
 3. In NH, I connect to my home wifi
 4. Turn off power management in the Sugar Control Panel
 5. Plug in the ethernet cable that connects the usb wifi dongle to the AP
 6. Plug the AP's power into the wall outlet
 7. Insert the usb wifi dongle into the 1.75
 8. Open the terminal activity and start following the install instructions

After a long wait I get the following info:

systemctl start ejabberd-xs-service

I checked log and it say specified file is not readable
/etc/ejabberd/ejabberd.pem

What should I do to continue ... things went smooth until I hit this.

For the time being I could login into the system via an AP and get internet

I always get that message about ejabberd failing to start during the

Did the install continue after you got that message? It should have done

Re: [Server-devel] XS Community Edition: XO 1.75 installtion

2013-03-02 Thread tkkang
Just registered for developer key for the XO. See if I could run XS-setup again
with the XO unlock. Pity I have no way of flashing to the latest 12.1.0 build
21.

Without ejabberd running or http runnig at least I am able to support 10 XO via
a external AP and a wired WAN from another USBEthernet. The power source for
the external AP is powered by the XO USB and hence no external power supply is
needed for it to server as a school server. That is cool.

Will update on progress but I will be back to the XS7 for a coming deployment.

Cheers

Initially, at least, the expected configuration is that the internal wifi is
used for external access (wan) and the ap is attached to a usb ethernet
device for interanl access (lan).

Great getting support for the list.

No it is a brand new XO 1.75 which have not been unlocked. Is that a must?

What is the typical setup ? As the XO internal Wifi can be turned into a
WiFi I will need a external AP connected to my USBEthernet plug. To get
internet access I will then need another USBEthernet plugin with connection
for wired internet access. It will so nice that the XO internal wifi can act
as a AP making less need for external AP!

Looking forward to future addition. The ability for the XO to server as a
webs erver while providing connection for other XOs is really a great
start - esp for small deployments!

Great weekend to all.

Hope I have better luck the next
 time.

[Server-devel] XS 0.7 and XO 1 1.75 registration

It has been sometime since I played with the XS. Have a few problems:

1. Registered went OK with a XO 1 and can login automatically on the Moodle but

2. Register with a XO 1.75 but this time won't login onto Moodle automatically.

Any advice ?

XS does listen on 8080, netstat --listen -pe --inet should show it. It
is the 'idmgr' service.

 Good!

the next problem is that when I try to register the qemu emulated xo

it fails, probably because qemu has a built in dhcp server and nat
 firewall,
so the xo never gets it address, dns, and domain from the xs and
 therefore
 can't find the xs.

Very likely correct. Maybe you can run qemu without dhcp nat?

There's probably a better way to do this, but I don't know the xo very well
yet. Here's what I did on soas:

(assuming that networking is working, i.e. you can type schoolserver in the
browse address and reach the moodle login screen on the xs)

from home access the setup menu and take networking (sorry I don't remember
the exact name)
change the name of the jabberd server to schoolserver.your domain

start terminal activity (it may not be visible at first if it's not a
favorite and I don't remember how I found it)
su - (become the root user; there was no password on my install)
yum install wget (use this to get the patch; it's not alread there)
cd /usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/jarabe/desktop (this is where the python
script that registers the xo goes)
mv schoolserver.py schoolserver.py.ORIG (keep a copy in case)
wget http://dev.sugarlabs.org/raw-attachment/ticket/916/schoolserver.py
reboot

registration should now work

Congtatulation...Nice feeling to see it working.

Agree that the next step is how to make the information useful. As I look at

Looking forward to the next level of usage.

We had 11 students using Sugar on a Stick and their sticks were backed up
today at the GPA! Yay!
So now I have feedback on the Moodle UI. I know we don't have a ton of
people doing development work so we need to think about where to collect
feedback if it cant be addressed in the immediate future.

   - The files show up in Backup but I can't really do anything with them.
I want to be able to browse Student work from a WebUI some how.
  - Maybe snapshots that I could view online like the previews in Sugar.
  - Ability to see the Description and Tags data
  - Ability to see all the past versions of this object (less
  important).
  - For Write documents and image files I'd like to be able to download
them to a nonSugar system and view them.
  - As a teacher I'd like to be able to edit the description and tags
fields from Moodle and have it get synced back.
   - I want to be able to work with the files inside of Moodle
  - Collect them as assignments/homework in a class so as the teacher I
have all my students on a page with a file each.
  - Blog about them. In my blog I'd like to be able to attach a file
  from my backup.

Basically the student work is there but its not in a very useful form for
either the teacher to assess learning or to reflect on the effectiveness of
the lesson or the students' needs.

Thimphu is the capital of Bhutan with a population of over 99,000. The Altai
A8 Super WiFi Base Station will be installed in one of the primary schools at
Thimphu to provide wireless broadband access to the campus areas in this
district. The long range technology of the A8 helps extend the WiFi signal to
1km in the line-of-sight environment, this helps shorten the deployment time
and cost. Anthony Wong, President, China South East Asia of OLPC said, ?We
appreciate the support from Altai. OLPC Asia will donate 200 units of
wifi-enabled XO laptops to the schools in Bhutan for education purposes.
Leveraging the Altai?s Super WiFi technology, the wireless broadband services
will cover the campus areas in Thimphu. Teachers and students will be able to
learn through the XO laptop and connect to them to the world.? This charity
project will kick-start the rural Bhutan on the road towards the digital era

Probably a strategic reboot is better, faster and clearer. You do need
it once you've set the domain.

If you

1 - install
2 - set the domain (which sets resolv.conf
3 - set the forwarders
4 - set ifcfg-eth0-local
5 - reboot

everything 'just works'. Once I make 0.6 an official release -- soon!
I promise! -- we can update the install guide with this info.

Working normally..and I am amazed by the level of automation via the XS.
Just registered 2 XOs via wireless.

Great!

Now I need to see how the Moodle could be a mix of external users and XOs
registered users. I use to have success login in with admin and the password
supplied to add newlanguage options. Any changes? I have not been login with
 the combination recently?

Use the first registered XO -- which has 'course creator' rights in
Moodle. It can create new normal accounts, which login with
username/password.

If you want those accounts to be 'course creators' too, after creating
the accounts you can grant them the right from Users-Roles-Sitewide
roles (a standard Moodle procedure)

Re: [Server-devel] Moodle/Server configuration for static IP external access

2009-06-18 Thread tkkang
I can't really recommend that. Moodle and other services should only be in
the internal network. Publishing it in the external network creates security
issues.

Yes, with a real school deployment this is a major concern. The XS I understand
is designed for minimal maintence without this headache!!

If you still want to do it, the best way is to ensure that the external
users (external from the PoV of the XS) see the exact same DNS name for the
server. Once you do that, images, forms and links will work.

What settings do I need to configure for this? Thanks

Have set the forwarders commands to my actual DNS and the resolv.conf

My thanks to you all. Cheers

Yep! that's the 2 steps needed for a static IP address on eth0

- an ifcfg-eth0-local file as Rodolfo's example

- upstream DNS servers set as forwarders

Also, /etc/resolv.conf needs to be pointing to the DNS server on the
XS. Otherwise the local names (needed for ejabberd and other services)
will be missing (unless you configure the upstream DNS servers to
serve them but that is more complicated).

cheers,

Fantastic news! DNS/resolver stuff is sometimes cached so going to

I tried your config - thanks. No luck.

I get a fixed IP of 192.168.1.230 and could ping 192.168.1.1, etc and even the

Re: [Server-devel] New XS-0.6d2

2009-06-05 Thread tkkang
A very large team is to their Sichuan, China today. We managed to do some very
initial testing of the XS last weekend but unable to stress test it as we had
limited time and lack of APs.

A photo of trying to monitor memory usage here:

http://www.meet2learn.net/egallery/main.php?g2_itemId=886

I have asked the deployment to record their field experience and hopefully more
information will reveal in a few days time.

BTW is the XS already a ejabber server by default?

When I type ejabberdctl status I get this message:

Node ejabb...@schoolserver is started. Status: started
ejabberd is not running

I want to test XO and SoaS with various activities via a collaborative ejabber
server? I have an actual working domain for the purpose.

Have a good weekend.

 from a volunter:

Yesterday in TK's office, I experienced that registration takes only 2
second for one XO, so I guess the bandwidth requirement for registratoin
 process is very minimal.

Yes, the registration is a simple process that does not use much bandwidth.

In my viewpoint, the most important question in the Sat. stress test is
whether we should use 1 AP or 3 AP. If it is feasible to register 50 PC via
one AP simultaneously, then we are safe. Because it means that we can
register 150 XO in chanenls 1, 6,11 simultaneously in SiChuan school. Then
we can finish registering 450 XO in 3 rounds. What do you think?

Given that registration is a light process and that it would actually
be quite a logistical challenge to get 50 people to click Register
in exactly the same moment, I guess your concerns are more about
general prolonged usage of the network, rather than specifically the 1
second that is needed to register a laptop.

You may have problems getting 50 people connected to the same access
point (the step *before* registration). Some access points that I
tested would crash after accepting the 31st user. Some are OK though.
But in any situation, 50 is probably the maximum you'd want to put on
1 access point.

You may want to focus on channels 6 and 11, because out of the box
XOs which have not yet connected to an access point will start meshing
on channel 1, this may saturate the spectrum with a sufficient number
of laptops.

I do not think you need rounds of registration. With sufficient
access points, you should be able to get 450 users online
concurrently. Having insufficient access points will be a problem
because the XOs automatically connect to familiar networks, so it will
be logistically difficult to get the first round of children to
disconnect to allow for the second round.

And as for post-registration... As far as I can tell, the XS has not
seen much field use with such a large number of users concurrently
signed on ejabberd, so your feedback will be very useful. We have
schools of similar size here in the Paraguayan deployment, but not
everyone has been taught about registration and collaboration yet, so
we're only at about 100 users online at any one time. (and actually
ejabberd is not coping very well with that, see my emails about
ejabberd CPU usage)

Daniel

you'll find an iso (usual anaconda installer) and an img.gz. The iso
is the usual Anaconda deal. The img file can be dd'd into an SD card,
and it will Just Boot on an XO -- see notes @
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/XS-on-XO

The installation process is significantly simplified. On first boot
(from either install method), you need to issue:

   /etc/sysconfig/olpc_scripts/domain_config your base domain

and restart. That's it, no more fiddling with ejabberd.

(Actually, I lie -- for Squid to work properly you'll want to set
/etc/sysconfig/network properly. Hope to fix that soon.).

[Server-devel] XS testing for Chinese English XO

2009-05-17 Thread tkkang
Greeting. This is my first message to the list! I am working on getting a XS
server working for deployment in China this summer.

Manage to do more testing to see if I could replicate problems I had
previously. I can repeat the following with both the chinese and english XOs
with a 0.52 XS that has yum updated:

1. User name with space (e.g. tk kang) have problems for the moodle account
creation. When I click on the tk kang at the moodle interface it say no
profile have been created. I check with the moodle admin account and it confirm
that an account was not created with the machine serialID

2. When I change back to the normal name of tkkang a moodle account is
created and works O.K.

3. Hence chinese names (double bytes) will have the same issue as describe
above.

4. Have not solved the problem of not chinese character in the ds-restore view.
When downloaded to the chinese XOs machine it display the chinese activity
normally.

For fun I created video of the XS bootup and my testing environment.

Cheers and hope to provide more test information as we go along.
