Re: [Server-devel] PDA mambot on XS
Hi David, Had that idea myself though didn't manage to see it through to a complete implementation yet. I guess the first thing you have to figure out is what devices people have. Formats are going to be a time consuming pain for mobile x / mobile y etc. No getting around that. I would suggest that you do a two phase approach: 1. Make sure that your content can be accessed using a basic XHTML browser - which is found on many of the middle range phones these days. 2. For audio application if you have a public place that people can bring cheap usb mp3 players that might help make it more accessible. You might also wanna look at Freifunk - that can be used to make a mesh cloud of routers that can extend coverage. Re: [Server-devel] PDA mambot on XS
Martin, Mike, I am exploring the possibility of increasing access to the server by providing mobile-friendly content targeted at people in the community, and the increasing number of phones with Wi-Fi support. For instance, the school server as a multi-purpose resource could serve as a sort of on-demand community radio station broadcasting audio information in the form of mp3s (or any playable formats commonly used in mobile phones). It would be nice to have a tidy way to share such content, with user uploads allowed too, and thus I thought of using a dedicated CMS with a mobile extension or plugin. I understood by "mambot" that one could use a plugin that causes mobile browsers to be recognised and then display content tailored to suit. For instance, Wordpress comes with a mobile "edition" plugin. On the XS it might run in parallel to Moodle with a different CMS, and I am experimenting with that on an Ubuntu 10 machine, or there might be a way to do it with Moodle. It might not be needed, I was happily surfing the XS on an iPhone without any such reformatting. However, I want to see what the range of options are, so I am interested in any feedback. Re: [Server-devel] PDA mambot on XS
Hi, Was a topic I considered a little while back working with CMS systems out here... Depends what class of mobile device was one is dealing with - if you're talking PDAs and more advanced phones then just a template / Joomla running in XHTML mode should be fine as long as it's reasonably put together. If you're talking like the small Nokia WML browsers then it's trickier. They should probably just use a wapalizer. The XS has a LAMP setup so shouldn't be too challenging. Re: [Server-devel] PDA mambot on XS
No-one has replied to this, but I remain interested in a mobile friendly plugin for the XS. If anyone has any thoughts on this I would be very interested. I'm thinking more in terms of increasing access to community through the most ubiquitous devices, sharing multimedia content, especially audio. But I am interested in an application targeting mobile users as well as XOs. Is it possible to install a PDA-mambot on the XS without doing it via a Joomla or other CMS? If so would I just follow a standard approach to installing it?
