Re: [Server-devel] XS Community Edition 0.3 (Release Candidate 1)

2013-05-22 Thread tkkang
More testing outcome.

1. Able to run with 2 USB-ethernet adaptor with one hardwire to the internet
replacing the XO wireless internet connection.

2. Collaborative work e.g. few registered machine running memorize game while
6 XOs non-registered running write.

3. SOAS have problem starting collaborative activities.

Conclusion: So far so good :-)

This might be related to fedora only allowing SU to ping. Jerry or
george might have a better idea of that issue.

Restore will probably land in 0.4. However the degree of moodle and
backup/restore integration is still an open question.

Thanks for testing and the valuable feedback.

2013-05-20 Thread tkkang
Some XSCE Release 1 testing outcomes. Some happy news.

1. Registration went OK for 12.1, 13.1 on XO-1.75, Soas-Fedora17 and Dextrose3
(XO-1)

2. Autologin works for all of them into Moodle
(http://schoolserver.local/moodle).

3. /usr/bin/ds-backup.sh works for 12.1, 13.1 (new patch applied). New files
seen in the /library/users/

4. Not sure what is needed for SoAS (is there a ds-backup.sh file?) or
Dextrose3 (Bld 96 Dextrose International). In Dextrose always get Failed Error
- Call Process: [None] when I click on the Journal Backup/Restore commands.

5. As usual clicking on the "backup" on Moodle gives the "This user has no
backup data yet (or data compatbility) ". Will this ever work ?

Ha... I keep poking it maybe not often enough :-(

My XO is OLPC 1C2, OpenFirmware Q4D24 and SKU228.

As for moodle registration I try again to see if itis consistent and will file
if it indeed a bug - lately having been messing up the XO with a XO 0.7
installation.

Also tried startx into gnome (any way to get back to Sugar?) and reconnect to
another wireless internet connection and hence was able to change my internet
connection. Now need to see if hardwire connection to the internet will work :-)

Do you have one of the early 1.75 models? I get a similar install
glitch on one of my early 1.75s. Somewhere near the end of the install
the screen goes blank if I haven't poked the touchpad lately.

Would you mind filing a bug about the moodle login at

It will be our first public bug reported to the project :) After hours
and hours working late into the night and talking to each other We
will finally have feedback from a potential user!

Great work. I installed the XSCE on a Class 10 SD card today to run on a
XO1.75. Still get a blank screen towards the end of the installation.
Connection seems working well so far. Manage to connect a bunch of XO to test.
Tested two registration and was able to autologin to Moodle on OS 12.1.0 but
not on a 13.1.0.

Thanks for all the hardwork. Looking forward to new features.

[Server-devel] XS Community Edition 0.3 (Release Candidate 1)

2013-05-15 Thread Adam Holt
A big thank you to anyone who can test RC1, almost three months after
XSCE 0.2 -- we now have big changes for all to try out with the
imminent XSCE 0.3:

   * XSCE runs on XOs' brand new OLPC OS 13.1.0,
thanks to XSCE's fast migration from Fedora 17 to 18 these past weeks
   * XSCE now runs on XO-4 and XO-1.5, in addition to the its XO-1.75
origins--with x86 & x64 testing just now beginning in earnest.
Highly experimental XO-1 functionality now proven, tho NOT advised!
   * Auto-recognition and mounting of USB hard drives
   * Modular Architecture: cleanly integrate extendable services,
 perhaps soon including http://internet-in-a-box.org
 successfully tested this wkd: http://schoolserver.org/0.3/IIAB
   * Full offline installs possible going forward:
set up your own USB memory stick installer.
 Compare To: http://wiki.laptop.org/go/OS_Builder
   * Moodle is Back!
   * Content filtering via openDNS.com and dansguardian.org

So grab an old XO-1.5 or similar and give XSCE 0.3 RC1 give these
earnest/sleep-deprived volunteers' offering a whirl:

   http://schoolserver.org/0.3

Many people would LOVE to hear your feedback testing the above before
final release just a couple weeks away! Til then, these little guys
rock (TM, iLoveMyXO.com !) Monster thanks to the folks whose
months of springtime work went into this imminent accomplishment--
traveling days from quite different parts of North America to make
this community product real.

With photos for those who missed Toronto's hard-driving volunteer
sprint in person: http://haitiDreams.org and http://planet.laptop.org
Finally, read more about this humble little community all contributors
are welcome to join at:

  http://schoolserver.org

Lastly. for the real art contest? We could really use a logo/design
if any artistically-inclined volunteer can contribute visual
inspiration(s) -- embracing the Open Education Movement we hope
will be unleashed by "offline cloud" schoolserver-like technologies!

Re: [Server-devel] XS Community Edition: XO 1.75 installtion

2013-03-03 Thread tkkang
With the right build 12.1.0-21 the XSCE installation work well.
Thank you all for responding as I learned more about the process of
installation the "difficult" way. Much appreciated.

Now will be testing to see how things work with wireless internet and USB AP.
Will shift to 2 USB later on in my testing.

Cheers

Re: [Server-devel] XS Community Edition: XO 1.75 installtion

2013-03-02 Thread tkkang
Just registered for developer key for the XO. See if I could run XS-setup again
with the XO unlock. Pity I have no way of flashing to the latest 12.1.0 build
21.

Without ejabberd running or http runnig at least I am able to support 10 XO via
a external AP and a wired WAN from another USBEthernet. The power source for
the external AP is powered by the XO USB and hence no external power supply is
needed for it to server as a school server. That is cool.

Will update on progress but I will be back to the XS7 for a coming deployment.

Cheers

Initially, at least, the expected configuration is that the internal wifi is
used for external access (wan) and the ap is attached to a usb ethernet
device for interanl access (lan).

Great getting support for the list.

No it is a brand new XO 1.75 which have not been unlocked. Is that a must?

What is the typical setup ? As the XO internal Wifi can be turned into a
WiFi I will need a external AP connected to my USBEthernet plug. To get
internet access I will then need another USBEthernet plugin with connection
for wired internet access. It will so nice that the XO internal wifi can act
as a AP making less need for external AP!

Looking forward to future addition. The ability for the XO to server as a
webs erver while providing connection for other XOs is really a great
start - esp for small deployments!

Great weekend to all.

Is your 1.75 locked?

For the 1st installation I did not have the USB-Ethernet-AP connection
plugin.

Your best bet is to have all your interfaces plugging in before booting
the XO, otherwise when we detect the number of interfaces we will miss
installing some components that is vital to using the XS as a router. We
prompt if we detect less than what is required for a router, but I
prefer to have the interfaces appear in the same order as what the
kernel will find if just rebooted. This is more of an issue when your
using 2 usb based interfaces and not using the XO's internal wifi.

I would prefer if you could use 12.1.0-21 as a starting point as that is

Yes it is a 12.1.0 (build 10) as I cannot flash the new build 21 since the
image I have is "customised".

For the 1st installation I did not have the USB-Ethernet-AP connection plugin.

Maybe I should use another XO to start all over again!

Just to clarify, you're on a 1.75 running 12.1.0? And before you started
doing anything in the instructions, did you plug in a USB wifi dongle
connected to a powered up AP?

My usual process for getting ready to install is:

1. Flash 12.1.0 on a 1.75
2. It reboots itself, I set the buddy name
3. In NH, I connect to my home wifi
4. Turn off power management in the Sugar Control Panel
5. Plug in the ethernet cable that connects the usb wifi dongle to the AP
6. Plug the AP's power into the wall outlet
7. Insert the usb wifi dongle into the 1.75
8. Open the terminal activity and start following the install instructions

As far as I know, the XO's wifi chip doesn't support AP mode, so
unfortunately no.

Thanks for the reply and support!

No.. I tried a number of time and it NEVER got me to the end where it ask me to
reboot with a message of a successful installation. Drop me there with
instruction to manuall start ejjaberd.

For the time being when I reboot .. at least it works with my the AP and
provide successful internet connection to other XOs - that is an achievement
indeed thanks to the hardwork of many! Hence can't http://schoolserver to get a
response, etc.

Must I use an external AP or there is more magic if the XO wirless can function
as this ?

I always get that message about ejabberd failing to start during the
installation process. It times out, then the installation process moves on.

Did the install continue after you got that message? It should have done
some other stuff, then after another little while, it should have told you
to reboot.

2013-03-02 Thread tkkang
I followed the procedures here
(http://wiki.laptop.org/go/User:Holt/XS_Community_Edition/0.2/Hacking#Installing)
and manage get to the part where I was advice to take a coffee break (ejjaberd
starting, etc).

After a long wait I get the following info:

systemctl start ejabberd-xs-service
Job failed. See system journal and 'systemctl status' for detail

I checked log and it say specified file is not readable
/etc/ejabberd/ejabberd.pem

What should I do to continue ... things went smooth until I hit this.

For the time being I could login into the system via an AP and get internet
access. So something is still working with a 1/2 an installation!

Re: [Server-devel] XS Community edition

2013-02-28 Thread Tim Moody
First, let me say that I don’t find much below to disagree with, though to
paraphrase George’s comments with Tony’s metaphor, I would say that what we
have done so far is take a wheel and get it to work on other makes and newer
models of the vehicle. But this is not our final aim and we are probably not
even at the end of the beginning.

If we could have anything we wanted we would have a pool of content and
services any combination of which could be easily installed and configured
locally or remotely using a graphical interface. They could be run on low
power devices if needed or larger machines if available.

I think we are now at the point of starting to include more features rather
than simply getting a subset to work, and the list below is excellent for that
purpose. I wish we had a dozen such lists and that the authors of those lists
would at the very least help prioritize them and possibly pitch in and help
implement them as we are not a very large group of people.

Hi, All

I am disappointed that this team appears to be proceeding to re-invent
the wheel.

If you are interested in "What will schools worldwide really want from a
server in the coming 10 years?", it would appear appropriate to start
from what is available now and what new capabilities may be needed.

The XS Community edition has performed a vital service in enabling an
Arm-based server. However, in the process I have lost track of the
download and installation procedure in the discussions of some kind of
cherry-picking procedure for 'services'.

It would be helpful to have a web page which provides a download and
install procedure for the Arm-based server equivalent to XS-0.7.

If and when the services selection procedure is in place, it would be
helpful to have a page which shows the services which can be provided
and how this is done.

Currently (and for many years) OLE Nepal has deployed a school server
with an extensive library (pustakalaya). This library is also available
online (http://www.pustakalaya.org). A comparable library capability is
deployed in Rwanda and Lesotho on XS-0.7 based on Django. However,
unlike Pathagar, the library content (pdfs and so forth) is on the
schoolo server so that the library is fully available at schools which
have no internet connection. In addition, the school server at these
schools has a complete set of Sugar Activities from ASLO (as of 5/2012)
so that XO users can download and install any of these activities (with
WebKit version of Browse). The Learn activity also enables teachers to
develop their own lessons and provides for students to download these
lessons (so they can be completed at home).

I think it would be a great use of the very limited available technical
resources to look at what is already available, determine limitations in
these capabilities, and devise plans to add new capabilities or to
enhance those already available.

For example, in Uruguay, the urgent request was for a capability for a
teacher to present a lesson on her laptop simultaneously to the laptops
of all of the students in her class. Currently Ejabberd includes all
registered (and connected) laptops in a single group. I suspect this
will result in confusion when the students in a single class (e.g. 40 of
120 laptops) try to connect to their teacher's lesson. Another option is
to provide a single url for the lesson; however, someone would need to
set up a synchronization (web2.0) method so the teacher can move all
laptops to the next slide in the lesson. The ShowNTell activity attempts
to provide this capability via Ejabberd but has not been tested in a
classroom setting.

Even in schools not connected to the internet, it might be useful to
have an email capability and a mailing list capability. This would
require a very lightweight email client as a Sugar activity (not
dependent on gmail) and a mail server (pop3, smtp) on the school server.
It would be helpful if this capability supported a sneakernet access to
the rest of the world (someone takes mail to be sent on a usb key to the
internet cafe and sends it and then collects email for the school on the
usbkey for upload to the schoolserve).

In many deployments such as Rwanda and Lesotho, the only internet access
is via the mobile network. This network charges by time or by megabytes
transferred. Aside from bandwidth issues, it is unlikely that schools
will be able to afford the cost of 120 students surfing independently.
If the school server could connect to a 'mothership' via a chron task
uploading new content created at the school (email, local wiki, forums,
blogs, ) and downloading new content for the school server (lessons,
additions to the library, ...),

s
interactive bilingual dictionaries as well as age-appropriate
monolingual dictionaries. Availability of picture dictionaries on the
school server would also be very helpful. The kamusi project
(http://kamusi.org/) is an example of what might be done. Currently, the
dictionary is not technically capable of rehosting on a school server.
One valuable project would be to define a standard framework for these
dictionaries that could be rehosted as well as support 'pootle-like'
opportunities for contributors to supply bilingual and multi-lingual
definitions.

There is a book by Adam Smith, 'WordPress for Education' published by
Packt. I think it would be relatively easy to install WordPress on a
school server which would give students and staff a chance to exchange
information. In particular, this may be a way to satisfy the request
from Jamaica for a way that students can submit assignments via the
school server which can be reviewed and marked by their teachers.

To make a long story short, there are many needs for additional
capabilities on the school server. XS-0.7 meets the essential needs of a
deployment and with the valuable addition of support for ARM based
systems, the needs of deployments with only solar power are addressed.
It would be wonderful if some of this team which is interested in making
the server more usable could address some of these needs.

Tony

Good Day All,

We are presently in the process of backup up the logs from the XO's (1.75's) to
a jump drive. Most of them have been successful. However I am getting an error
for a couple. The error I get is

Backup up Journal to /media/DEAN

Org.freedesktop.dbus.pythom.IOError: Tracebook (most recent call last):

Could you assist?

Thanks in advance,

This weekend, seven dedicated souls pulled together to solidify,
plan and build -- getting to know each other much better en route.
What will schools worldwide really want from a server in the coming
10 years? What's the most constructive community & solid product
we as volunteers can build within 1 year?

Careful advanced planning helped us release version .1 Friday late,
strengthening our minimal core of AP-like features on an XO-1.75:

Next we tackled version .2 with a small set of extended services,
also for XO-1.75 but with experimental support for x86 "big iron":

Further down our main page (http://schoolserver.org) thoughtful
documentation has begun under "Getting Started":

including ARM. Working forward, we want to refine core services

[Server-devel] XS Community Edition prebeta test

2012-11-18 Thread Holt
We're really hoping this will eventually help many different kinds of
schools. Does anyone have time to test this today on an XO-1.5 or XO-1.75 ?

http://wiki.laptop.org/go/User:Holt/XS_Community_Edition/Install_Recipe

George Hunt & Jerry Vonau have worked their butts off over the past week
especially. We're not quite there yet, but plz admire/evaluate things
like :)

* Registration
* Squid (DHCP / named, Browse from an attached XO)
* Moodle
* ejabberd
* VNC's admin page (see
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/User:Holt/XS_Community_Edition/Install_Recipe#Further%20Quick%20Testing
)
* Gateway: try to use your XS/XO as an actual
Gateway-to-the-Internet as George is attempting in NYC

* OpenDNS stuff likely won't work yet
* Stay tuned for partitioning of external disks (SD, USB memory
sticks, USB disks)

Send email for informal feedback please, privately or publicly! What
_you_ want to add in future? Thanks all for getting in touch with
ideas/contributions/critiques/whatever.

In future we hope to work well with non-XO server hardware (big iron),
Puppet (sysadmin tools), Pathagar (ebooks etc), KLS (Karma Learning
System) and an increasing amount of Aleksey's work, far better
documentation, XS-0.8 monikering if/where appropriate, etc.

Of course, file proper bug tickets here if you can:
https://sugardextrose.org/projects/xs-config/issues/new

Registering here first: https://sugardextrose.org/account/register
As we're in a rapid bug-fixing stage -- please always include the
version of xs-config (type "rpm -q xs-config") and detail what hardware
you're running.

Thanks!!
