[sig-policy] 7th International Workshop on the Recursive InterNetwork Architecture (RINA 2020) - Submission Deadline Extended!

* Call for Papers *

* 7th International Workshop on the Recursive InterNetwork Architecture (RINA
2020): Challenging RINA *

During the last decade research funding bodies have supported “Future Internet”
or “Clean-slate” design initiative s intended to reduce network complexity by
redesigning the network protocol architecture, questioning some of its key
principles. Industry groups such as the ETSI ISG NGP are looking at
alternatives to the current “TCP-IP” protocol suite. However, few initiatives
have really been able to “clean the slate” and question the core model and
underlying principles of current Internet protocols. Of those who have done it,
RINA – the Recursive InterNetwork Architecture - is probably the simplest yet
most general solution.

RINA implementations are maturing while researchers keep working in
characterizing its applicability to a wide variety of current networking
challenges. During the last year RINA has been featured in an ETSI ISG NGP
group report as a potential candidate for future-proof protocols, and the
standardization work on its core specifications at ISO has advanced to
Committee Draft Standards. New projects like RINArmenia are working to develop
RINA expertise at the national level, and are teaming with the local industry
to implement and deploy the technology in a variety of markets.

In addition to papers that investigate and experiment with different properties
of the RINA architecture, this year’s RINA Workshop especially welcomes papers
that challenge the RINA principles and show limitations it its approach,
disprove its claims or provide a simple solutions without compromising the
benefits obtained by following the RINA architectural principles. Such papers
can present improvements to IP-based technologies, or alternative approaches
such as ICN, NDN or SCION to name a few.

The RINA Workshop also solicit s papers that investigate the application of
RINA in different types of network segments and applications, papers reporting
on prototype implementations, experimental deployments , and interoperability
with existing technologies. We are also interested in papers that challenge the
RINA principles and show limitations in its approach, disprove its claims or
provide a simpler solution without compromising the benefits obtained by
following the RINA architectural principles. Intended topics include but are
not limited to:

* Comparison of RINA with other networking technologies that challenge its
vision and principles (evolutions to IP-based technologies, NDN, ICN, SCION,
etc.)
* Quality of Service in RINA
* Mobility, multi-homing and multicast
* Security: authentication, access control, confidentiality
* Routing in recursive layers
* Management of recursive networks
* Implications of RINA for AI-based n etwork m anagement
* High-performance RINA implementations via programmable hardware
* RINA scalability
* Policies for large-scale RINA DIFs
* Deployment scenarios for RINA
* RINA prototype implementations
* Deployment of 5G network slices enabling RINA networks
* Analysis of case studies showing benefits of RINA
* RINA for satellite constellations networking (LEO, MEO, GEO)
* Specific RINA policies and DIF designs for wireless networks
* Specific RINA policies and DIF designs for RINA in datacentre networks
* Specific RINA policies and DIF designs for RINA in IoT networks
* Specific RINA policies and DIF designs for RINA in service provider
networks
* RINA applied to v ehicular networking
* Specific RINA policies and DIF designs for RINA as a next generation
virtual network overlay
* Supporting the requirements of large-scale decentralized applications
(e.g. blockchains)

Call for Papers

1st Workshop on Flexible Network Data Plane Processing. (NETPROC 2020)

During the last few years SDN and NFV technologies have been shaping the ways
new telecommunication services and applications are deployed and managed. We
have seen how dedicated equipment interconnected by static networks are being
replaced by CoTS equipment running NFV solutions that in turn, make profit of a
flexible and reconfigurable SDN-based networks.

We are observing that applications that require high performance network data
management and processing are shifting from traditional Virtual Machine based
solutions to new paradigms that cover a broad set of approaches, sometimes
referred to as NFV acceleration solutions. All of them have in common the
objective of improving the network processing performance, flexibility and cost
either by trimming the number and complexity of traditional operating system
software components, by bypassing traditional network stack processing or by
offloading processing to reconfigurable or programmable hardware network
data-planes. Moreover, an efficient network data plane processing will not only
improve applications but will foster the appearance of new applications, as well
as pave the way for new mechanisms supporting a seamless integration of network,
compute and storage services, in what is being termed as “in-network computing”.

The complete challenge involves not only providing the low-level techniques but
also but also building an overall approach to package and manage these
techniques and facilitate their adoption by the industry. In this sense,
proposals that could become compatible with software-network orchestration and
automation techniques (such as those proposed by ETSI NFV architectural
framework or IETF SFC, to name a couple of the most relevant current
standardization approaches) are of particular interest.

We solicit papers that investigate novel approaches to Flexible Network Data
Plane Processing. Possible topics include but are not limited to:

- Hardware Network Data Plane Processing: P4 and beyond.
- Software Data Plane programming: eBPF, XDP, DPDK, ODP, AF-XDP…
- Advanced applications of Network Data Plane Processing.
- Integration of in network processing in general NFV and SDN architectures
- Security management, development and implications of Network Data Plane
  Processing.
- Hybrid (network/host based) VNFs and supporting architectures.
- Performance evaluation and optimization.
- Stateful data plane processing.
- Cloudifying the Network Data Plane Processing.
- Supporting architectures.
- Improving the security of Network Data Plane Processing architectures,
  services and applications.

The ICIN conference, established in 1989 and praised for the high quality of its
technical program and richness of its social networking, is also recognized for
its continuous adaptation to emerging technical trends.

The year 2020 will be a keystone in the evolution toward the networks of the
future, with the first commercial deployments of large-scale 5G infrastructures,
the increasing interest in network intelligence and machine learning techniques
applied to network management and orchestration, the progress of precision
networking technologies toward low-latency services, and the end of the Horizon
2020 research framework program in Europe superseded by the next Horizon Europe.

In this scenario and considering the many challenges that the aforementioned
paradigms and technologies will bring, ICIN 2020 will focus on:

"Beyond 5G: building network sense"

The conference will foster new ideas and novel approaches to future service
delivery in a smart network environment, able to show what could be qualified as
sense, “a sane and realistic attitude to situations and problems”, according to
Oxford Dictionary. With this vision, the conference will look beyond the current
state of the art and promote the advances of network management and
orchestration
technologies.

ICIN 2020 aims at providing an international forum for researchers and
practitioners from academia, industry, network operators, and service providers
to discuss and address the challenges posed by innovation in clouds, Internet
and
networks. Interested authors are invited to submit papers presenting novel
technical studies as well as broader position and visionary papers.
Contributions
that discuss lessons learnt and best practices, describe practical deployment
and
implementation experiences, and demonstrate innovative use-cases are especially
encouraged.

ICIN 2020 solicits original, unpublished work not currently under review by
other
conferences or journals. Papers submitted to ICIN 2020 will be assessed based on
originality, technical soundness, clarity and interest to a wide audience. All
submissions must be written in English and must use standard IEEE two-column

Technical papers can be of two types: full papers or short papers, up to 8 pages
and 5 pages respectively, including tables, figures and references. Demo papers
of length of 3 pages are also solicited.

At least one author is required to register, at the full rate, to present
