1 2 3 and 4 are the corresponding paritition number on the USB (block) device.

So it's normally 1 to mount, unless you have partitioned your USB flash
drive...

If your flash drive is unused and you haven't repartitioned it, I recommend
you to repartition/format it under Linux.

Or else try upgrading your kernel.

I actually had some fun with this a while back and asked the list (not
many ppl play with these so it seems).

I found that some devices actually mounted as /dev/sda rather than
choosing an actual partition. Give that a try and see how things go.
(that said, I have others that work when you choose a partition number
such as /dev/sda1, just depends on the way its made).

Hi Shaun,

Each one is different... but most are /dev/sda or /dev/sda1.

We have that problem at CSE trying to let students plug in their (much
varying) USB flash drives.

So, here's roughly the steps that are done to find the right place to
mount (assuming you know its /dev/sda[1]):

1) Check /proc/partitions
If size of sda is smaller than sda1, etc, then you probably want
   /dev/sda, otherwise probably /dev/sda1, BUT
2) some devices have an extended partition there, so if the size of
/dev/sda1 is 1, then thats probably an extended one and you want
   /dev/sda5.

That's actually the easy bit - its trickier to figure out that it is in
fact /dev/sda (i.e. generically, where there could be many devices plugged
in/out). So since I found it hard to find info on this, here is some on
that too (kudos actually to Neil Brown for this stuff):

- Check /proc/scsi/usb-storage-*/* to see which devices are attached, and
which scsi host they are on.
- Go through /proc/scsi/scsi to find that host and any channel/id/lun info
  for it.
- For all /dev/sd? devices, find any that are on that scsi host
- Some devices (particularly multi-format card readers) provide each card
reader on a different scsi LUN, so for these to automatically work, you
may need CONFIG_SCSI_MULTI_LUN=y in the kernel config.
  - if there are multiple LUNs for the same host, get the user to tell us
 which one they want.
  - When scanning for scsi host, also check for same scsi lun
- Then apply earlier details to figure out which partition you want, if
  any.

So, how do you know which /dev/sd? matches which scsi device (referenced
with host/bus/channel/lun (4 numbers).

We only look at the host and lun, there are 2 ioctl's that will give us
these = 0x5386 for the host, and 0x5382 for the lun. In shell+perl:

 for dev in /dev/sd?; do
   scsihost=$(perl -e '$a=; open( F, '$dev')  ioctl( F, 0x5386, $a)
print unpack(L,$a).\n' )
   scsilun=$(perl -e '$a=; open( F, '$dev')  ioctl( F, 0x5382, $a)
(@l = unpack(CC,$a) ) print @l[1] . \n')
   # check if host and lun are the ones you are looking for
   ...
 done

Cheers,

 - Simon

[1] If devfs, it's more like: scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/disc or part[1-4]

Im using CVS for a Web site. You could use any version control system
such as CVS, Subversion, Arch etc as HTML web sites are just collections
of files. If you want to version images then look for a versioning
system that can handle binaries as well as text files.

As has been mentioned, CVS, Arch, Subversion, or any other general version
control system will do the job. However, if what you're looking for is more
of a website management system with version control, have a look at Diogenes
or MySource. I've used both, and they both have versioning built-in.
MySource has more glitz, but Diogenes has a simpler interface. Both have a
similar quantity of features (although the feature set is different).

Re: [SLUG] usb flash drives

Hi Shaun,

It's usually left as a registered scsi device.
If you cat /proc/scsi/usb-storage-0/0

(numbers might be different), then you should see something that says
whether it is attached or not. If it does think it's still attached, then
you're right that something is messed up.

If a second, different, usb stick is plugged in, it'll come up as /dev/sdb
instead. This is why we had that nasty bunch of steps I mentioned before
to find which device it is.

Cheers,

[SLUG] Something really weird with PHP

2004-07-20 Thread Howard Lowndes
I am trying to test the status of a value passed to a PHP program as a
POST parameter, specifically a SUMBIT button, thus:

if (empty($_POST['button'])) {

Now, I know that the parameter is not empty because if I put a debug
print line before it then it will print out the value of the parameter
and the conditional test comes up as false, which it should, thus:

print $_POST['button'].'br';
if (empty($_POST['button'])) {

but if I don't have the preceding print statement (which is only in
there as a debug) then the conditional test comes up as true and the
logic branches off in the wrong direction.

BTW, it's PHP 4.2.2 called by Apache 2.0 on a 2.4.20 kernel.

As I say, really weird, and even weirder is that I have another program
with identical logic in this same way that behaves fine.

I'll bet pounds to peanuts you've typo'd the index name on the empty() call.
Is the code above a direct cut-n-paste from your code, or a retype?

[SLUG] Invitation to Hawaii (USA) and Amalfi (Italy) vip/ka

2004-07-20 Thread IPSI-2005
Dear Dr. Slug,

This is an invitation for you to attend two IPSI BgD multidisciplinary and
interdisciplinary conferences, one in Hawaii, and one in Amalfi, as follows:

IPSI-2005 HAWAII
Big Island Hawaii (arrival: 06.01.2005. departure: 09.01.2005.)
Deadlines: 1 October 2004 (abstract) + 30 October 2004 (full paper)

IPSI-2005 AMALFI
Amalfi, Italy (arrival: 17.02.2005. departure: 20.02.2005.)
Deadlines: 17 October 2004 (abstract) + 7 December 2004 (full papers)

If you like to obtain more information on both conferences, please reply to this
email. All IPSI BgD conferences are non-profit! They bring together the elite of the
world science (so far, 7 times a Nobel Laureate was talking at the opening ceremony),
and they take place in the leading hotels of the world.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: Internet, Computer Science and
Engineering, Management and Business Administration, Education, e-Medicine, Electrical
Engineering, Bioengineering, Environment Protection, and e-Economy. These conferences
are in line with the newest recommendations of NSF and EU to stress multidisciplinary,
interdisciplinary, and transdisciplinary research, and truly support this type of
scientific interraction.

Sincerely Yours,

Prof. V. Milutinovic, Chairman

PS - If you plan to submit an abstract/paper, let us know immediately. If you are not
able to attend now, but you like to be informed about the future IPSI BgD conferences,
please let us know. If you do not like to receive future invitations, let us know, as
well!

That's what I thought at first, but the editor has no problem regex'g
the index name throughout the entire code, and this pgm has been run
every week for the past 2 months, yet suddenly it breaks this week
without being touched - I can be certain of that as I am the only one
who has access to the code.

Besides which, it has two modes that it can run in depending upon a
second passed parameter. In one mode it breaks and in the other it
works, but the second parameter has nothing to do with this particular
segment of code.

It's as if there is a problem in the way in which the parameters are
being passed and accessed by the code. If I print _anything_ (not just
the index name) just before the conditional then the conditional works
fine, but that is not an acceptable kludge as it then breaks a header()
call shortly afterwards.

Re: [SLUG] How to get dhcpclient to ask for another IP addr

2004-07-20 Thread Michael Lake
Hi all,
Thanks David. I installed a deb of that macchanger and tested it this
morning. I connected this morning and got the same IP address as
yesterday and couldnt get out. I bought down the eth0 interface, used
macchanger to fake a new mac addr, bought up eth0 and was able to browse
external web pages again. I could see also that I had been given a new
IP addr. Hence prob solved and I am still waiting for someone in IT to
respond to my logged help request :-)
(u do I mention that I am using a faked mac addr ??)

Michael Lake wrote:
Today the UTS is blocking web access from my laptop with a web page
saying my system can access the web again after I have had the virus
removed. I have put a IT request in but I'd like to work out some
things myself. I thought that as I get an IP address at boot time I
might have got an IP address that was last used by a Windows machine
with a virus and that IP has been blocked

Im using dhcpclient on a Debian machine. Reading the dhcpclient man
pages don't suggest that I can ask for a new address. If I just bring
down eth0 and bring it up again I get the same address. Can I force
somehow a different address or is that beyond a clients power ?

Probably not the best way to go about it, but changing the MAC address

I guess a program like this could help:

Thanks,
I can't miss my slashdot :-)

AFAIK, WebCentral are a Windows-based hosting company. I guess you are after
a Linux-based host?

I saw them providun RedHat 9 based servers .. so I assumed they are mixed.
And yes it must be *unix based.

Think they run their Linux servers under Microsoft's virtual server...

Well, that's one way to guarantee poor uptime on your Linux boxes.

Actually, it looks like I might have been wrong on this:
they run 'virtual dedicated servers', which runs under a product called
'virtuozzo'. So they don't run under M$, which is a relief :)
