I resolved this by installing ESP Ghostscript rather the standard
version. All I can find is that "ESP Ghostscript used to be included
with CUPS in recent version, but
EasySoftware, the makers of CUPS, decided to separate the two." Mysterious.

[SLUG] StGeorge online banking & Linux

2005-01-09 Thread Sonia Hamilton
Hi,

I know this is a long running Slug thread (StGeorge online banking and
their lack of support for Linux), and that you can get around it using
UserAgent spoofing.

But given the new warning StGeorge are putting on their site when you
logon, and the latest IE6/XP/SP2 security advisory [1], a few lobbying
emails to StGeorge wouldn't go astray :-)

(yes, I read SlashDot [2] too...).

So what I suggest is Knoppix 3.6 bootable CD. Run it on your high-end
machine, play with it lots. Then decide what you want to do.

Why ...

The old pentiun is fine
Avoid gnome and kde, use one of the light-weight wms like icewm.

I'm biased, don't like debian, I'd suggest RedHat 9
or if you are serious SuSE
http://www.elx.com.au have 9.1 for $39.95. I find yast much easier/more
obvious than the yums and apts (which have worked for me, but also
caused hours of heartache - not nice for a newby!

IMHO twm is glacial, hard to configure, not very helpful at making you
think wow! I must do this!
Icewm is much nicer, easier and more satisfying, but if you do want
auto-mounting-cds, network browsing of shared winders machines, usb-mem stick,
camera auto-mount to get the photos etc etc then gnome (less capeable,
or kde more kludgy, but more able (and both are actually quite nice to use)
then you need a desktop window manager, a 1G+ machine and 256M+ memory.

I guess my major input is that a low-end machine is easy for experienced
users, but a newby won't find it satisfying or productive. You really
want a capable machine for you intro, THEN you can use the low end.

RE: [SLUG] "top" command - looking for a site that explains the runningprocesses

2005-01-09 Thread Visser, Martin
For non-interactive system processes you should google for documentation
that describes "init", the grand-daddy of all processes, and
"/etc/inittab" and the scripts in the "/etc/init.d" directory which
effectively configure init. ("chkconfig" also drives the /etc/init.d
configuration). Of course each of the services/processes that is
configured here spawn subsequent processes - "pstree" is an excellent
command to show these relationships. Finally "cron" kicks off scheduled
processes at various times. (Each distro has different ways of managing
these through the GUI so you need to look at the System Admin section of
your distro manual).

Depending on what you do interactively of course will also determine
what processes run. The terminal, Gnome and KDE environments all kick
off processes at various times to support shells, toolbars, panels,
monitoring etc.

Unfortunately there is not really a single authoritive place to look at
"why" something is running. "top" is a great window into the
environment, but unfortunately you will need to do a little hunting to
determine the root trigger/cause. That being said, the great thing about
Linux is that it CAN be determined. I have found that even experienced
administrators in another unnamed environment often can't clearly
explain why something is or isn't running. (Hence the current dire issue
with spyware, trojans, etc). While everything in Linux may not be
clearly documented in plain English, somewhere the code is available for
perusal - though this may not help the newbie.

Good luck, Martin

It varies for me. (Firefox 0.93 for Ubuntu Warty Warthog, Sun JDK 1.4.2.)

 - Default UA: Always get stuck at the redirect page
 - Moz for Windows: Always get stuck at the redirect page
 - IE6 for WinXP: Can get to the login screen, will sometimes crash the
   browser
 - IE5 for Mac: Can get to the login screen, will sometimes crash the
   browser

I suspect Netscape 7 might work (it's meant to be supported, at least
for some O/Ss) but I haven't looked up a string for it.

It seems to be this redirect thing that stopping it working for the
default UA.

I´m going to upgrade to Sun Java 1.5.0. If that doesn´t solve the
problem, I´ll try Firefox (as both of you are using it).

[SLUG] St George Internet Banking

2005-01-09 Thread Ben Stanley
Hi,

I had St George Internet banking working fine until just recently. I was
using the user agent spoofing technique described previously on this
mailing list. I last used it successfully on Wednesday 5th January 2005.

I have now tried to use it on Saturday and Sunday 8th and 9th of January
2005, and I now get stuck at the ´redirecting´ page. This is the typical
symptom you get if you haven´t set your user agent correctly, however I
have mine set to

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.0.0) Gecko/20020530

(This is not the same string as I was using previously - but that one
didn´t work either.) Perhaps there is another user agent string that I
should be using?

Can anyone let me know if it still works for them, or have StGeorge been
less than saintly and changed their site again to block Linux more
effectively?

I´ve got Mozilla 1.7.3-0.2.0 (from Fedora Core 2) and Blackdown Java
1.4.2-01 installed.

Thanks for any help,
Ben Stanley.

http://www.groupsys.com/top/documentation.shtml
http://sourceforge.net/projects/unixtop

You might also want to check out "ps" if you want to see all of your processes.

If in doubt, check the man page. :-)

Cheers,
Lindsay

[SLUG] "top" command - looking for a site that explains the running processes

2005-01-09 Thread Elliott-Brennan
Hi,
Can anyone direct me to a site that explains the running processes shown
by the command 'top'?

I've had a bit of a look around, but the frequency of the occurance of
the term means that I've an excessive number of non-useful results shown
(and I'm not able to work out how to set more stringent parameter)

As I'm not that familiar with what is shown in the results shown in the
terminal window, I'm not able to work out if I have processes running
that shouldn't be, or that can be stopped without crashing my machine.

Thanks,
   Patrick

[SLUG] Cups print output disappearing

2005-01-09 Thread Rod Butcher
Sluggers, after 6 months of OK printing, print jobs now disappear into
the ether... my Epson stylus parallel printer is physically OK as it
works with the dualbooted Win2K.
Only changes I'm aware of are that I've upgraded from Gnome 2.4 to 2.9
(I did this weeks ago but this is the first time since that I've used
the printer).

Amongst loads of what look like routine messages
in /var/log/cups/error_log I always get the following :-

[09/Jan/2005:21:25:15 +1100] Unable to convert file 0 to printable
format for job 22!
I [09/Jan/2005:21:25:15 +1100] Hint: Do you have ESP Ghostscript
installed?

Any other things to look for ?
I have gnughostscript-8.01 installed.. + latest version of cups &
gimpprint from Mandrake 10.1... what difference should ESP Ghostscript
make ?

Thanks
Rod

Yes, it will do it, but you might find it very slow for X.
Stay away from gnome. Suggest RH 7.1 say as a lighter load.
My web and mail server run on a similar machine.

twm

an oldie but goodie. Anything else will glaciate.

apt-cache search twm
apt-get install twm

To get started, just apache and learn the basics and basic web pages.
Then if the machine can handle it, other add-ons for apache.

[SLUG] No unix/linux knowledge but want to get started?

2005-01-09 Thread Mark O'Connor
Please tell me now if I am wasting my time but..
I have an old pentium 166Mhz , 64MB Ram, 40GB HD and I want to learn a bit
about Linux and set up a web server.
A)do I have a chance or will I need to give up my day job?
B)where is a good resource for instructions for the total novice?

I have bluffed my way through installing Debian (using a boot floppy and my
internet connection)but there is no gui and I am not familiar with Unix
commands
1) any suggestions for where I go next
2) Is there a good gui for debian that will not grind my machine to a halt
3) Any suggestions for reliable and lite web and mailserver software

Thanks
Mark
