[SLUG] Source IP with multihomed box
Hi all, I have a question regarding a multihomed box. Does anyone know how the kernel decides what source IP address to use on a multihomed box? For example, I have a box with: eth0 inet addr:192.168.1.244 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 eth1 inet addr:192.168.99.241 Bcast:192.168.99.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 eth1:1 inet addr:192.168.98.240 Bcast:192.168.98.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 and a default route set to 192.168.99.244 will send a packet out its default gateway with a source address of 192.168.98.240. Seems a little strange to me. I can see why eth0's IP address might not be used, but why not eth1 instead of eth1:1's address? If I swap eth1 and eth1:1 around, then the source address moves with it (ie becomes 192.168.99.241) I'm doing stuff using ip routing rules and I need to know when and under what conditions a specific IP address is used. I even got it to work through an ssl proxy today, so now I can administer linux boxes that where previously stuck behind said proxy. for debian: apt-get install openvpn answer - yes I want a tap device made for me. grab sample config file from openvpn.net. follow simple howto. too easy. get stuck, ask questions. dave -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ Subscription info and FAQs: http://slug.org.au/faq/mailinglists.html

I have exactly the same problem in Fedora Core 3 and I do seem to remember that it was not like this a few versions back. I'm pretty sure that fc1 was better. It isn't specifically an Ubuntu problem. It bites me when I run java in a web browser to access St George internet banking (which will work from Firefox with the Sun jre provided you also install the User Agent Switcher and set yourself to Opera -- weird huh). The bank statement won't allow you to select it at all but it does have a button marked copy which will copy it to the clipboard. But you can't paste that into emacs because emacs only accepts traditional X11 (i.e. the text MUST be selected). On the other hand, pasting the bank statement into gedit works fine (and that's about all I ever use gedit for). How anyone could have ever decided that traditional X11 cut and paste was difficult to use and needed to be augmented with something copied from Microsoft is beyond the furthest horizon of my wildest nightmare. Re: [SLUG] Source IP with multihomed box
Hi. From: Andy Eager [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Wed, 18 May 2005 19:48:36 +1000 Does anyone know how the kernel decides what source IP address to use on a multihomed box? It comes from kernel routing table. ip command in iproute2 (or iproute, it depends on packaging) may help understanding the routing issue. For example, in my case: $ /sbin/ip route show 192.168.0.0/24 dev eth0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.0.22 192.168.30.0/24 dev vmnet1 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.30.1 10.0.0.0/8 dev eth0 proto kernel scope link src 10.0.0.1 default via 192.168.0.1 dev eth0 It shows that src address 10.0.0.1 is explicitly used for 10.0.0.0/8 network. On the other hand, there is no src address specification for default route. I'm doing stuff using ip routing rules and I need to know when and under what conditions a specific IP address is used. At first, according to the ip command reference, so-called IP Alias is not aliasing. If routing table shows that default via 192.168.99.244 dev eth1 it means that packets go out through PHYSICAL device eth1, so either LOGICAL device eth1 or eth:1 can be used for it. # The term PHYSICAL and LOGICAL may be inaccurate, however # the output of ip addr show may support my idea... I'm not sure how to choose LOGICAL device. Apart from the way to choose, if src address is not specified, it is not surprising that wrong src address was choosed, because kernel assumes that eth1 and eth1:1 are even for routing. -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ Subscription info and FAQs: http://slug.org.au/faq/mailinglists.html
