[SLUG] Newcomer
Hello there, I'm Roberto from Mexico and I barely have around a month here in Sydney, I'm going to study at Macquarie University a master in IT, and I'm also interested in Linux and OSS so I think your group is very interesting to me. I'm not sure if this is the list for asking for a distribution but if someone can handle a copy of Suse10, would be appreciated :) Bye Roberto -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ Subscription info and FAQs: http://slug.org.au/faq/mailinglists.html
[SLUG] VMWare Server free as in free beer
I noticed that VMWare Server 1.0 was released recently and is freely downloadable. How is this significantly different from the other VMWare versions? A quick skim through the site gives me nothing more than VMWare Server is more suitable for servers and VMWare Workstation is suitable for workstations. I don't see how I can't use VMWare Server to install desktop OS's... Am I missing something here? Thanks in advance. Want to be able to connect to them and manage them remotely, with a full graphical client (like VMWare Workstation's UI, but talking to the server)? You'd have to connect to the host machine running VMWare Workstation to be able to run multiple operating systems and access them all via VNC/SSH or RDP. That means running a GUI (be that Windows, a full desktop environment on Linux, or just an X server with VMWare running in it if you care to make the effort). With VMWare Server, you run it as a service, on a server machine, no GUI required, and you administer the service via a GUI (VMWare Server Console) on your client machine (Windows or Linux). It's VMWare... as a server. - Jeff -- linux.conf.au 2007: Sydney, Australia http://lca2007.linux.org.au/ I get my kicks above the .sigline, sunshine. -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ Subscription info and FAQs: http://slug.org.au/faq/mailinglists.html

VMware workstation hit v5, and introduced alot of features. Unforunately these v5 features didnt get put into VMware GSX server (still based on v4 features, maybe even v3). VMware server merges what VMware GSX was, into a free product called VMware Server (with many v5 VMware workstation features). The management console with VMware server, is the same gui you see when you load VMware workstation, except the console can manage/connect to VMware server machines anywhere on your network, and as such the machines (virtual ones) running on that server can be driven/managed through this console over tcp/ip. Nothing stopping you still using vnc/ssh or rdp to manage the virtual machines, but you dont need too if you want to install the console. People tend to use both.. I knew the final release was due, as the last beta was down to 4 days before it expired. So it was either announce final or release another RC beta. Even us employees didnt get any internal announcement about the final release.. although we never usually do when it comes to VMware type announcements. Shame really as I have been a long time fan of the products. -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ Subscription info and FAQs: http://slug.org.au/faq/mailinglists.html
Re: [SLUG] VMWare Server free as in free beer
there is nothing stopping you from running server machines on vmware workstations, its just that you will have to leave the server logged in and to get at the 'physical' console of the virtual machines you will need to get onto the desktop of the host machine as jeff points out, vmware server runs headless and features a client which allows you to connect to the 'physical' console of virtual machines over a network. in either case you can still ssh/rdp/whatever to the virtual machine. however, you will have lots of fun reconfiguring the network cards ;) in vmware server, you can have vmware start and boot virtual machines at the hosts boot. in vmware this may also be possible, but will require a log in to the gui of choice (windows/x/whatever) and possibly some funky tricks. vmware server also has a nice web gui, monitoring all the virtual machines in one nice place. vmware server is very similar to microsofts offering, which, to be fair, is pretty good (although windows bound) microsofts offering is also free i believe. but there really is no difference in installation complexity etc. and no, you cant migrate from one to the other. Re: [SLUG] VMWare Server free as in free beer
I was under the impression that you couldnt just grab a virtual host file and move it from one to the other. Im sure you can get norton ghost or something and do some great hacks to pull it out and put it into the other. however, both have different virtual hardware, and vmware is the only one with virtual smp (real handy for converting legacy nt4 machines to virtual machines) Dean Jeff Waugh wrote: quote who=Dean Hamstead and no, you cant migrate from one to the other. Re: [SLUG] VMWare Server free as in free beer
alas corporate policy prevents many of use from this =( but at home... bwoohahahaha ok this is getting more slug-chat. ill end now by saying if you want to mess with OS's then vmware workstation is your software, if you want to run some servers then vmware server. we don't run anything production in it, (ie servers) but we do use it for testing lots of different things as well as spawning and deleting endless test platform server for our developers. its quite good to do a windows 2000/2003 install, then copy it off, let the developers go to town on it. then just delete it and you still have your nice clean original install which you can bring back in again time and time again, or infact, as many times as you need to simultaneously. [SLUG] Debian Linux for SPARC
Hello, I would like to get in touch with folk who are interested in Debian Linux for SPARC. Is there such a group of interested folk. I have some issues which I am wrestling with re going the step beyond the base Debian install via the net and the documentation to hand is very very weak. Re: [SLUG] Newcomer
G'day Roberto, Welcome to Australia, and also to Sydney. I hope you enjoy your study time at Macquarie University for the next month and that your Masters goes well. SLUG has monthly meetings which appear to be a lot of fun. If you get a chance to go to one, I'm sure you'll have a great time. I can't help you with finding a copy of Suse 10, but perhaps someone else can. If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask the list. Welcome again. [SLUG] Gnucash v 2.0.0
I apologise in advance for my phraseology, since I understand practically nothing of what I'm doing here. I installed the subject application, having formerly used v 1.8.12. With the old version, I was able to download share prices using a Perl module called Finance Quote (Finance::Quote?). To use the new version, an application that comes with Gnucash told me that I must get an additional Perl module called Crypt::SSLeay. I tried to find an appropriate RPM (I use Fedora), but couldn't. I therefore used another application that comes with Gnucash in an attempt to install the additional module. In the course of running that additional application, I got the following output: CPAN.pm: Going to build C/CH/CHAMAS/Crypt-SSLeay-0.51.tar.gz No OpenSSL installation found, usually in /usr/local/openssl Which OpenSSL build path do you want to link against? I took it that I could answer that question by giving the directory in which I had the application openssl. I therefore asked whereis openssl and was told /usr/bin/openssl. I therefore answered the question set out above by saying /usr/bin. That got me the reply: Apparently no SSLeay installation at '/usr/bin' Are you sure you got it correct After that, the installation of Crypt::SSLeay failed. Can someone explain to me how I should be answering the question Which OpenSSL build path do you want to link against? I'd be very grateful. -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ Subscription info and FAQs: http://slug.org.au/faq/mailinglists.html
