[SLUG] Surround sound cards?
So, I have a sound card with a CM8738 chipset, that I picked up from Dick Smith fairly cheaply. I'm using it with a set of Logitech 5.1 surround speakers, with plain old analogue connections (three 3.5mm stereo connections). This all sounds great, and the driver works reasonably well. But the driver on my ubuntu hardy machine (kernel version 2.6.24-12-generic) has one glaring problem - it's only able to control the volume for the front-left and front-right channels. In stereo mode this is fine, but in 5.1 mode the other three channels are pegged at max volume. So, can anybody recommend a sound card? I'm looking for: - 5.1 surround support, with analogue output - reasonably cheap, and reasonably good quality - good linux driver support Thanks, -- Pete -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ Subscription info and FAQs: http://slug.org.au/faq/mailinglists.html
[SLUG] wireless card that just works?
(Ubuntu 7.10) What are people's recomendations for a PCMCIA wireless card that just works (tm). I bought a cheap DLink DWL-G630, and I'm having headaches with it. Driver loads, Network Manager sees it and tries to associate with networks, but never finishes. I'm now playing with ndiswrapper... Can anyone recommend a supplier of cheap sms for large quantity? Within a few months 2000 per day. Notwithstanding everything West of Alice is Largely Unexplored telstra's nextG in Perth is OK certainly good enough for what you require. Data rates range from 10K to 300K and can vary in seconds. The biggest issue is finding YourBox behind their network. I have the data logger make regular ssh calls to TheServer to establish a tunnel back to the logger. All cheap and easy. You could also have the loggers call and dump James -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ Subscription info and FAQs: http://slug.org.au/faq/mailinglists.html

So did the Compaq WL100. In fact, all the Prism-1 based cards I've used `just work'. I've had endless trouble with more recent cards. This is the response I got from the ABC when I queried them about this back in December. Dear James, Thank you for your message regarding ABC Now. ABC Now does have a little similarity to the BBC's iPlayer but is not intended to be the same service - instead we offer a way for our audience to aggregate a selection of our most current radio, TV, news, sport and weather content into a small desktop application. With regard to your query regarding a Linux version - due to the technical requirements of ABC Now we have been unable to find a robust and secure tool for making the Flash based code into a stable Linux version at this time. We are keeping an eye on developments in this area and hope to bring a Linux version to you as soon as practicable. In terms of our use of Real Player with ABC Now - our audience has the choice to use either Real Player or Windows Media to listen to live radio via ABC Now, and this is because we are aggregating live streams from around ABC Online which use these formats. In the future we are hoping that all live streams will be offered in mp3 format so that we can drop the need for Real/Windows from ABC Now but this is yet to be resolved. We've passed your feedback regarding this issue onto our production team and technical staff. Kind regards, The ABC Now team. -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ Subscription info and FAQs: http://slug.org.au/faq/mailinglists.html
