Thanks for the info. The bug report rules out WL-167G as a "just works"
solution.

Be wary of anything using the rt2500 kernel module in Ubuntu.

And it doesn't appear to be resolved in the Intrepid Alphas... :-/

ASUS WL-167G appears to be supported by rt2500 kernel module (I checked
2.6.26). Also, it seems it's the only one with Linux support specifically
mentioned on manufacturer's website. But I haven't used it so if you really
have to go USB, you can give it a try.*

Not particularly difficult to do, though with some devices it does
involve tftp shenanigans. Best current router is probably Asus WL-500G
premium.

If you specifically say you need it to work under Linux, and the vendor
doesn't specifically say it doesn't, you'll be entitled to a refund if
it doesn't work.

Yes, that's just it.
The router idea is pretty good, but I don't have time to mess around
with that right now (I haven't used ddwrt before).

I think I shall purchase a selection of cheap cards and see if I can
get one of them to work. The current Atheros based one that I have
causes a lock-up during boot up and the only thing I can do to get it
working is disable ath_hal (the restricted kernel module the card
requires).

The problem that I thinkt he OP is alluding to is that you can't be
sure, even buying the same product, that you're getting the same
hardware. The chips on the card can change between batches, so you go

The OpenSource version does not cost anything, is updated frequently
and gives what you need. Its easy to install and no bother at all.

Looking at installable packages we have:

multisync0.90 - PIM Synchronization Tool
opensync-plugin-syncml - Opensync SyncML plugin
opensync-plugin-evolution - Evolution plugin for opensync

There is a requirement for a syncml server in order to synchronise. Is
there an installable version rather than using something like
scheduleworld.

gmail may at sometime support syncml, but there is no official mention
of it now.

I've found the USB ones use too much CPU and the PCI ones are difficult
to guarantee will be supported. I ended up using an access point
flashed with dd-wrt in client mode. It's got a better antenna too.

Anyway I'd like to pick it up somewhere in Sydney today (preferrably

Would be nice if it was at least 802.11g, but I don't really care.

I was thinking more along the lines of text files, which I can open with
vim which automaigcally decrypts and re encrypts. But then there is
word/openoffice documents as well not just email

so if I read that right, I can use crypt keeper (fuse based encryption)
with the latest (6.x) truecrypt package, cool, what are the pit falls ?
Can I use cryptkeeper with truecrypt created disk/bin/files ?

[SLUG] File / Disk Encryption

2008-09-01 Thread Alex Samad
Hi

I am looking for a substitute for truecrypt, why because I don;t like
how they have gone to the insistence for a gui front end on the linux
side of things, the real pain being the how hard it is to compile for
debian, true atleast for 5.x not sure for the new 6.x series.

Currently I have a usb stick that I use on windows and linux, keep my
important doco on it.

Any suggestions for a substitute. If it was just linux I could just
crypt/openssl/gpg it, but that doesn't work well in windows

[SLUG] MySQL and Direct Admin

2008-09-01 Thread Roberto
Hello all,

Anyone has experience with DirectAdmin and MySQL. We're using DA at the
moment on a Ubuntu 7.10 installation and I asked Direct Admin support how to
upgrade with no luck. Actually we're quite desperate in the job because we
are offline. If anyone has any idea or give a hand would be highly highly
appreciated.

The problem is that when I try to start mysql using
/etc/init.d/mysql start
I got
/usr/sbin/mysqld: /usr/local/lib/libz.so.1: no version information available
(required by /usr/sbin/mysqld)

and definitely have no idea about what's complaining about.

Any light anyone can shed on this would be useful.

Cheers,

Roberto

I also had problems with sound on fedora 9 which I partially resolved by
at least enabling sound for mplayer by changing the permissions for
/dev/dsp to allow anyone to use the device: chmod 666 /dev/dsp. I put
this command in /etc/rc.local so that it changes the permissions on each
