[SLUG] ActiveX in Virtualbox not working

2009-10-09 Thread elliott-brennan
Hi all,

My wife is a child and family psychologist.

One of the tests she uses (they're all
windows-based - there are no *nix versions and
they cost $2000+ a pop) appears to require ActiveX.

I've installed the software in an XP guest within
VirtualBox.

However, each time I try to run the application I
get a message that it cannot work because of a
lack of ActiveX.

Does anyone know if ActiveX works within
VirtualBox or whether I'm better off trying out
Vmware-Player or something similar?

Thanks for any assistance offered.

Regards,

Patrick

It shouldn't matter if its running native or in a VM.
What browser are you using inside the VM?

Hi Harrison,

Urm. The exact message is:

MHS Tool - this is the name of the software ware

ActiveX component can't create object

I'm assuming the thing works within a browser

IE6 installed (I doubt if it requires a browser
that they'd make it for anything else :(

I'm just going to 'upgrade' to 8
Thanks

Patrick

Re: [SLUG] ActiveX in Virtualbox not working update

2009-10-09 Thread elliott-brennan
Hi again, Harrison,

Seems like it needed me to make IE the default
browser (I also installed 8) - scary!

Now I'm having other problems...might have to get
back if I need SQLserver assistance (this stuff is
SUPPOSED to be plug and play :))) for clinical
psychologists!)

Turns out that antivirus scanners can corrupt the
install - sooo, I'm supposed to install the
application with the AV disabled (!), trusting
there's nothing untoward on their disks...here
goes...trust away

[SLUG] Any suggestions for places to do Personal Sprints in Sydney

2009-10-09 Thread Adam Kennedy
Hi gang

Lately I've been finding that between IRC, twitter spam, and all the
other communication conveniences of our modern lives, it's really hard
to force yourself to devoting a whole day to learning some new
technology or to hack on that Important Project or what have you.

I'd like to experiment with the idea of a Personal Sprint, where you
pack up a laptop and all the downloaded material and books you need
into a backpack, go somewhere unusual or picturesk or otherwise
undistracting and spend a 5 or 10 or 15 hour day or evening or night
with absolute nothing to distract from the task.

Only problem is, I'm stuck for places to do it.

In the past I've had some success with shorter periods of a few hours,
by just getting on a train to Penrith, or sitting our on the foodcourt
balcony at Bondi Junction shopping centre, and so on.

But where would people recommend as places to go for this kind of thing?

Limitations.

1. Must be reasonably reachable by public transport, some use of taxis
is acceptable.

2. Must have electricity, buying 10 hours of extra battery time is
probably not reasonable, extension cords are allowable.

Thoughts?

Re: [SLUG] ActiveX in Virtualbox not working - second update

2009-10-09 Thread elliott-brennan
Oh the fun of using this software.

So, finally get this 'running' by making IE the
default browser.

As soon as I then start it up, it tells me that
the key included on a USB driver (comes with the
software) is corrupt. I copied the files back to
the drive (made backups!!!) and then it tells me
the install is corrupt.

Reinstalled the thing FOUR times. The only
solution is to ring the USA (hmmm, closed). So now
I've had to write to them with a collection of
reference numbers and will have to wait for them
to send me an admin code that will supposedly fix
this problem.

Sheesh. Now have to wait until Monday
in the USA.

Regards,

Patrick

2009-10-09 Thread Morgan Storey
sounds like activex is disabled in the browser, not an un-common occurence
MS don't trust there own programming language anymore, I wouldn't suggest IE
8 as they have locked down ActiveX even more.
To check it go to tools, internet options, security and (depending on the
zone the site is in; internet, restricted or trusted) click on custom level
and enable the activex controls. You could simply add the site to your
trusted zone and then change it in there if it doesn't already work.

2009-10-09 Thread Daniel Bush
On the google roro list occasionally you get people organising a jelly
session.
But I think the idea there was to get people who work from home into a
situation where they can interact and maybe bounce off eachother a little.
So I don't know how easy it would be to seclude yourself - haven't actually
done it.

Don't know if it's still going.

If you find a good get away place with all the mod cons, not too costly, be
sure to let me know.
