[SLUG] FAX server or gateway or some other solution
Hi all, I have a requirement to have a FAX at home. I have vmware ESXi with CentOS virtual machines and would like to create a FAX machine hooked into a modem to the phone line. However solutions like Hylafax require a serial port but VMware does not support serial ports. (yet) I'm just looking for some solution to mostly SEND faxes... less of a must having to RECEIVE faxes. But I suppose it should work both ways (in and out) if possible. I'm trying to avoid running up another physical box with linux and a serial port/modem or a fax card... I have enough boxes running and am trying to reduce the number of machines I'm running. I don't mind running another Virtual machine though. So any FAX solutions out there that can be virtualized or any free gateway fax services like the free SMS services? I'm still searching but open to idea's. Perhaps someone has found a perfect FAX solution already? (yet) quote September 3, 2007. innotek today released VirtualBox 1.5.0 for Windows and Linux. snip Version 1.5.0 also adds support for serial ports /quote That suggests that Virtualbox will do serial ports although it doesn't prove that it actually does - I haven't tried. I do know from experience that you can switch an existing vmware virtual machine over to virtualbox and that it makes life a lot easier after you do. David. I do know from experience that you can switch an existing vmware virtual machine over to virtualbox and that it makes life a lot easier after you do. I almost suggested something that made a similar assumption to you: that there was a host Linux or Windows OS that could, for example, run additional software. I noted the ESXi designation, which is the minimal bare-metal hypervisor, and doesn't run on top of another platform — so, moving would be a major, not minor, shift. Last time I needed personal fax I used these folks: http://www.utbox.net/ Honestly, dealing with faxing, and Hylafax, for work makes paying someone else to care still sounds like a *really* good deal to me. [SLUG] resolv.conf.swp
Hi all, i'm trying to edit resolv.conf it keeps coming up with the message that there is a resolv.conf.swp so something else must be editing resolv.conf however i'm not and i've restarted the machine. I also cannot find resolv.conf.swp by doing... find / -name resolv.conf.swp anyone care to enlighten me on what's happening here? Re: [SLUG] resolv.conf.swp
Ben, IIRC, swap files start with a '.' (dot) and are thus hidden. Take a look for that. It basically means a previous editing session was ended uncleanly and vi (or your editor's) tmp file was cleaned up. DEL the swap and all will be good again. Honestly, dealing with faxing, and Hylafax, for work makes paying someone else to care still sounds like a *really* good deal to me. I use hylafax and it's completely robust and solid and useful as far as I can see. Everyone on my home network can send faxes, which is handy. I've got it set up to drop faxes as pdf's into a local directory and send me an email when one arrives. Best thing I ever did, especially since faxes, although hardly used any more, are still necessary for some things. -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ Subscription info and FAQs: http://slug.org.au/faq/mailinglists.html
