[SLUG] SyPy THIS THURSDAY: Making R restfully enterprising with Django - Richard Volpato

2011-01-04 Thread Dylan Jay

SyPy: Sydney Python Users group meetup 6 Jan 2010

6:15: Arrive
6:30: Lightning talks (email me, or just bring a 5min talk along)
6:45: Making R restfully enterprising with Django - Richard Volpato
7:40 Social networking and beers and dinner nearby

*RSVP: Please RSVP so we have an idea of numbers* via
http://sypy.eventbrite.com/

Main Talk summary
Using, mostly Python, the challenge of this project was to offer
within an intranet, a RESTful 'statistical service' powered by R (a
statistical language). This ‘service’ (to crunch a lot of usage
data from across Australia) had to communicate securely and reliably
with other systems, schedule and prioritize requests of its services,
and of course, enable users to select and filter the data through
interactive graphs in the browser.
The components of this system include, beyond a specialised R package
(CAL-R):

 • MySql as a data store;
 • Django, as the application server dealing with workflow, page
delivery and tracking;
 • Django-Piston, making the whole service available as a
‘RESTful service’ to the business.
 • Connections to R via Pyper (a piping system that maps R
objects into Python objects and vice versa). T
 • Load and composition of tasks for CAL-R, controlled by a
queuing/scheduling system based on RabbitMQ and Django Celery
 • Formatting and user manipulation of objects on the page (eg
drag and drop, select etc) is delivered via jQuery (a JavaScript
framework) and
 • Protovis (a JavaScript implementation of ‘ggplot’ style
graphics) renders custom interactive graphs in the browser (note: not
just a pdf!).

Biography
Richard Volpato, born in Italy, studied at ANU and Cambridge (UK)
mostly sociology and social research. He has also consulted across a
large number of industries, notably forestry, tourism, superannuation,
education, health, religion and urban/regional planning, the last of
which led (via Zope Corporation) to a successful tender for the
Victorian Government Planning scheme amendments system (ZAPP: Zope
Amendment Production Platform). His current role at the Copyright
Agency as Manager of Data Quality and Analysis has been to improve
data quality, its value and the systems used to acquire and process it

finally refactors the new code to acceptable standards..

Scripting real time 3D simulations - Mycosm Studio:

This talk will give an overview of mycosm and it's embedded
pythondevelopment environment that allows you to create real-time
highfidelity 3D visualizations and simulation. Mycosm uses Python to
notonly script behaviour, control, and interaction with external
programsbut also as a means of fundamentally constructing the 3D
environment.

We will go through some practical examples of programming mycosm
anddiscuss it's potential uses. We will also discuss the advantages
ofthe choice of python for this product.

Jeff Cotter:

Jeff has an impressive record of innovation and software project
management. As the head software engineer for Electro Optic Systems
Pty Limited (EOS) he was instrumental in the design and development
for the EOS Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) facilities in Japan and
Australia. He was also the head software engineer behind the
development of the software systems for:

	• A remotely controlled telescope observatory facilities for NASA
(KECK observatory in Hawaii)
	• An astronomical observatory at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics
(India);

• The Western Kentucky University telescope facility in the USA.
One of Jeff's more significant projects was design and development of
the software for operating the World's first optical space
surveillance facility at Mt Stromlo for the tracking of space debris
in Earth orbit. The software that Jeff and his team developed was
integral to the operation of this facility which has successfully
tracked debris as small as 10cm at over 2000km/h in space. This
project was commissioned by the US Air Force and the Australian
Department of Defence with the objective of implementing over 50 such
facilities globally to track every piece of debris in the Earth's orbit.

Jeff's innovative skills and excellent design skills formed the basis
for invention and development of the Simurbansoftware suite, now
widely acknowledged as one of the most advanced 3D Direct X based
visualisation engines in the world.

Since mid 2007, Jeff has led the RD for Mycosm - the company's hi-
fidelity multiplayer 3D simulation technology platform.

== SLUG January Monthly Meeting ==

Instead of running two 45 minute talks will be having two Python game
tutorials. At the end of each tutorial you should have a fully
playable

game developed and running!

The first tutorial will be suitable for beginners of all ages, no
programming experience will be required. The tutorial will focus
around

a Punch the Monkey game, but there should also be enough meat for
more advanced people to create something cool.

The second tutorial will be suitable for people who want to advanced
further and will concentrate on extending skills learnt in the
earlier
tutorial. Some programming experience is recommended for this
tutorial.

During this tutorial people will create a clone of either space
invaders or asteroids.

As the tutorials will be interactive you will need to bring a laptop.
You will also need to set-up your laptop with the appropriate
software.
The software runs on Linux, Mac and Windows. You will need to
install:

 * Python - http://python.org
 * Pyglet - http://pyglet.org
 * Rabbyt - http://matthewmarshall.org/projects/rabbyt/

To test that everything works, I have included a small Python program
which will display It works if everything is working.

To do so on Ubuntu, you would use the following commands;
  # Install python and easy_install
  apt-get install python python-setuptools
  # Install pyglet and rabbyt
  easy_install pyglet
  easy_install rabbyt
  # Test everything is working
  python test.py

If you figure out instructions for other operating systems or Linux
versions please add them at:

*** If you have problems, please turn up **early** so we can fix
them!

Python. It can be used for cataloguing, managing and deploying
database schemas. Its major current use is to identify the differences
between various versions of a schema. A schema is a single logical
grouping of database objects usually made up of tables, views and
stored code objects (functions and procedures).

We will also have 2 slots for 5 minute lightning talks. If you think
its interesting and you're a pythonista then chances are we will to.
Put together a few slides and bring it along.

About Andy:

Andy has spent far too long working as a consultant for Oracle
Corporation and then a number of associated consulting companies.

Which means that he knows a lot about databases. Far too much some
would say. He's used them to build OLTP systems, as well as Data
Warehouses and assorted BI solutions. He's done everything from make
the tea to run the whole shooting match..

Make Python Apps Start Fast - Andrew Bennetts

Command line programs such as version control tools need to run
quickly so that they do not disrupt the user's work. Anything more
than a heartbeat and the user gets impatient and distracted.
Programming in Python is typically much easier than C/C++, but making
a Python program load and execute quickly can be a challenge. This
talk explains how Bazaar, a GPL-licenced distributed version control
system written in Python, can execute commands like “bzr status” in as
little as 100ms on my fairly modest laptop even though it has roughly
12 lines of Python source code. This talk will cover tools and
techniques for both analysing and fixing causes of long startups for
Python.

Bio - Andrew Bennetts is a Software Developer for Canonical Ltd.
Andrew works on Bazaar, a GPL-licensed version control tool written in
Python. He has been a professional Python programmer since 2001. The
last four of those years he's worked for Canonical, building tools to
help open source developers collaborate. He's also a long-time
contributor to Twisted, the asynchronous networking framework.

[SLUG] Sydney Python 5th June meetup postponed... but wait theres more

2008-06-02 Thread Dylan Jay
Hi Python lovers,

First off, many thanks to Mark Rees for doing a great job organising SyPy
until now.

Normally SyPy is 1st Thursday of the month but it looks like we're going to
have a special talk in a couple of weeks at google so this weeks meeting has
been postponed. Stay tuned. It would be great to have a 2nd talk so if
you've played with something pythonic lately and want to share, send me an
email.

So this week instead we've been welcomed to join AJUG on this Thursday. The
talk on amazon ec2 should be interesting to anyone wanting to host any kind
of application server (inc django, zope)

Atlassian HQ
173-185 Sussex Street (cnr Market)
Sydney CBD
http://maps.google.com.au/maps?q=173+Sussex+Street,+Sydney+NSW

WHEN:

Thursday, June 5, 6:00pm.
First talk starts at 6:30pm

SPEAKERS:

Talk #1: Running Java web apps on Amazon Web Services
Peter McKeown

Talk #2: Holy Grails
Mike Cannon-Brookes

And then we'll file out to parking lot for a python vs java good old
fashioned no weapons rumble (joking). Or we could just go to the pub.
