Re: [SLUG] A call to arms!

2014-07-22 Thread Johannes Nielsen
Hi all
I would like to see a talk on Android app development, from someone who is
am App developer.

I was re inspired after watching Google IO

What I am very interested in is a career path plan.

Who is involved in the App building process?

What are the various roles?

If I want to code Apps what is the most efficient programming language?

I am mostly self taught so an on line self paced course would work well for
me.

All support gratefully accepted.

Much joy
Johannes Nielsen

Web design.

A bit about html5
a bit about css, responsive design.
a bit about javascript, jquery.
Angularjs... which honestly I have just started.

In my opinion targeted apps will die. a good front end in Javascript and
html will do everything in the app except some very intense processes. The
cost of developing multiple versions across phones is just too high and
there are problems with install.

Not so much a talk as a open conversation. I am well aware there are a lot
of very smart people in Slug who will tell me when I miss something :-)

Thanks

Hi,

This months SLUG meeting is fast approaching and we don't have any talks
lined up.

So this is a call to arms . . .

If anybody has a subject to talk about please SMS or call me (Robert on
0468 306 239) or Jiri (0413 183 117) or email the slug mailing list
(slug@slug.org.au)

Even if all you have is an idea of what you want to hear about post it
anyway and maybe it will prompt someone to talk about the subject.

Cheers

Re: [SLUG] A call to arms!

2014-07-20 Thread gr0ve
The lack of a Science Minister is seriously disturbing
The desire to "kill" the NBN and replace it with a hybrid model based on aging
and feeble copper and capped out wireless.
The action on enabling spying, data logging and impact on ISP's.
The wish fulfilment of Murdoch to restrict access to media via lockins
and three strikes for "piracy".

All of these are relevent. And no, the former govt is "not much different".
There was a Science and Technology Minister. There was a desire to complete
an FTTH NBN. There was no wish fulfilment of the Murdochracy. Yes,
there is common ground on spying, but these govts are polar opposites
when it comes to tech matters. The Shadow Treasurer knows what a
Cyclotron is and what it is good for. Current treasurer thinks it is something
to do with green bicycle lanes.

As someone who has NBN FTTH and experiences the benefits of it, as someone
who is using it, to try and run a home business, these matters are relevant,
& there are differences. The Tony govt is actively hostile to Science & Tech,
hates the NBN and wants people to get their media through a favoured
source as some kind of twisted thanks for the headlines. They will not take
advice,
except from those already "inside the tent". Open Source
in this era of govt is far away from the Microsoftisation and Outsourcing
they are already rolling out everywhere. Patrick is quite right to have
concerns!

2014-07-20 Thread David Lyon
Hi Patrick,

There's really not that much difference between this government and the
last one with respect to any technology development policies. If you think
there is a big difference, then I welcome you to explain the differences.

If you want to say what you think the policies should be that will bring
back a knowledge of science and finance, then hey, do comment on that.

Last time I was overseas, I didn't have any great problems. Nobody
complained to me - but hey - it's a big world.

How about "Australia, Laughing Stock of the World". Someone could do a
reenactment of Phony Tony and his gang of Cronies pretending to understand
basic science and finances.

Maybe the whole group could put together the pieces on the false flag
attack of the MH17 to see where the puzzle fits together...

Or you could skip to the point and run a mock trial of Tony Abbott "the
war criminal". His sentence could be condemned to live until all his
childrens, grand children die of C02 and Methane poisoning and North
Sydney is sucked into the rising sea.

- If that's all too much how about a presentation on Hybrid Graphics
laptops and how to get them to work properly with Bumblebee.
