In other words (quoted by someone else) It might be your intellectual property... But it's not your computer. Sony BMG has used the XCP copy-protection software on 49 titles from artists such as Celine Dion and Sarah McLachlan and produced an estimated 4.7 million music CDs. Around 2.1 million units have been sold on to consumers. The software, developed by British software makers First4Internet, installs itself on a personal computer used to play the CD in order to guard against copying, but it leaves the back door open for malicious hackers. Re: [SLUG] Sony recalls copy-protected music CDs
Isn't it amusing that this whole thing is for protecting copyright but the rootkit itself contains GPL code (from lame) that Sony has infringed on. So Sony can run around infecting machines with stolen code (Im using there own words isn't it fun) and get a ooh you naughty big corporation dont do it again slap on the wrist, but if a 16 year old kid sends out a rootkit that infects half a dozen machines its throw him in a dark hole. Not only does this rootkit invade your privacy but its also creates massive security problems and multiple conflicts for which Sony hasn't paid the damages for yet. So people who keep saying there is a law for us and a law for the big corporations this is poof beyond doubt. Re: [SLUG] Sony recalls copy-protected music CDs
No the justice dept knows about this and handed out the warning when the law specifically says this is a criminal act. Last I looked a criminal act is just that nothing more or less. This is a failing of the govt (USA) to act upon a clear breach of the law. As for the LAME folks, shrug its up to them.
