resolvable?

I've had some luck installing skype on amd64 using a 32bit chroot and
the instructions and associated resources here:
http://juljas.net/linux/skype/, particularly the note on fixing the
dependency on libqt3c102-mt in Skype's official .deb

Install EasyUbuntu
run EasyUbuntu
EasyUbuntu does the rest

EasyUbuntu ( easyubuntu.freecontrib.org ) is a set a program which you install
which then installs the other bits you want. It's an alternative for Automatix
which was mentioned in the previous email.

Do you install Easyububtu as a complete OS or is it grafted onto already
installed Ubuntu?

Google automatix. This is a family of scripts that are provided to do all
the extra setup for K/Ubuntu. I have seen messages in the ubuntu forum
about amd64 versions.

I haven't tried it, but reviews and messages about it look quite good.

Please use EasyUbuntu instead of Automatix. There are a lot of disappointly
bad things done by Automatix that are better to avoid.

I haven't tried it, but reviews and messages about it look quite good. It
does all the sort of things you are writing of, including adjusting your
sources.list file for the required repositories.

And let us know how it goes, please. (I'm running Gentoo, and about to move
to Australia, so it will be a month or so before I'm back on broadband to try
it myself).

Not too easily. Debian/Ubuntu doesn't have biarch (because it's a bad way of
doing things anyway), and neither have yet to move to multiarch (though that
is coming in Dapper+1, the release due at the end of the year).

For 64 bit Intel CPUs, I recommend just using the i386 distro. For actual
amd64 it gets harder because they're actually really crap at doing 32 bit.
Generally, the best way to do this for the moment is to run a 32 bit chroot,
but you'll generally find that enough of the necessary libraries are shipped
in the ia32libs package, so just unpack the Skype deb and put it somewhere
useful.

SuSE distribute random Windows DLLs (for which they have no license) in an
RPM? Crazy. There are w32codec packages available for Debian and Ubuntu, but
*definitely not* distributed by either. There's lots of information about
these available on the Ubuntu wiki (or grab EasyUbuntu, which is a sane way
of getting some of this naughty stuff onto your system).

[SLUG] ubuntu/debian

2006-03-18 Thread jam
Hi
in quest of enlightment, I've put aside my biases, installed ubuntu, as
recommended for noobies, sorry :

After spending the morning fighting the tools:

I downloaded skype:

dpkg: error processing Desktop/skype_1.2.0.18-1_i386.deb (--install):
package architecture (i386) does not match system (amd64)
Errors were encountered while processing:
 Desktop/skype_1.2.0.18-1_i386.deb

resolvable?

I tried to get xine to play a wmv file. I enabled every repositry and every
option. I get (sic):

The stream ShazBaz.wmv use an unsupported codec:
Video Codec: Windows Media Video 9(WMV3)
Start Playing anyway ?

Easy with SuSE: install the w32codec-all-20050412-0.pm.0.i586.rpm
All is fine.

Also, my SuSE amd64 has 32 libs, so it can run 32 apps. Skype don't give any
other options.

If you go to packman and search for mpg123 he gives mpg321.rpm.
This was my hint to get mpg123. The symantic tools do not give any hint.

If anybody can point me in the right direction, much appreciated.
