Re: [SLUG] what can you do on 8mb that isn't a firewall

Ideally I'd like to have a simple word processor, spreadsheet etc. And what window manager do you run on 8mb? I'm currently thinking window maker. Is there a better choice? If you want to actually run something on the machine, I'd recommend lwm as the window manager, and then you can buy a book on LaTeX, because clicky- clicky won't be very satisfying/productive in 8MB. I'd agree with Jeff. Run LaTeX with xdvi and it will be responsive and fast in 8 Meg. I'd suggest fvwm or fvwm2 or fvwm95 as its easy to configure menus with and its fast. I was going to avoid saying, but since this has turned into a window manager plugfest, ratpoison (http://ratpoison.sourceforge.net/) is a very lightweight wm that should work spiffingly well on an 8mb machine. [SLUG] what can you do on 8mb that isn't a firewall
Hi all, I'm taking up masochism so I just got this old Apple LC575 to boot the debian (2.2) installer from floppy disks (which is another story entirely, but ask if you're having trouble with one of these things, I now consider myself an expert :)). I want it to run X, but it occurs to me that there won't really be RAM for anything else. My question is: what stuff (clicky stuff) can I install and have run reasonably in 8mb. Ideally I'd like to have a simple word processor, spreadsheet etc. And what window manager do you run on 8mb? I'm currently thinking window maker. Is there a better choice? Thanks, James. -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group - http://slug.org.au/ More Info: http://lists.slug.org.au/listinfo/slug
