You, like myself, probably hit the sweet spot with Apple laptops where
we have the Ornico wireless (just Airport, rather than Extreme), a
Radeon chip with decent support and working suspend to RAM.

These days it's all Broadcom wireless, NVidia chips (no drivers for
PowerPC) and only software suspend to disk, which seems to cause as
many problems as it solves. That and if BenH ever got hit by a bus
(touch wood) I really wonder who else would step in to keep Linux
support even where it's at. As Erik has noticed strange things can
start to happen and you haven't really any clues on how to start
fixing it. I certainly couldn't recommend the current crop of Apple
laptops to anyone wanting to run Linux on them.

I used to recommend the ibook as a linux machine myself.

 connected via aiport card.

Yep, mine is an older machine with airport instead of
airport extreme (broadcom chip). Standard airport works
fine.

Like Ian points out, the ibooks used to be a good option.
They very definitely are not so now.

it is simultaneously a high and low level language when in
reality it is good at neither.

I don't really care so much about that, what I like is
that this makes it possible to buy a laptop without
paying he microsoft tax and knowing that linux has a
damn good chance of running all the hardware.

Sorry, IMO that is not good advice.

I have had an iBook for three years and until recently
it worked very well.

However, about 6 weeks ago I installed patches under OSX
and since then the machine has refused to wake up after
sleep under Linux. I have tried about a dozen different
kernel versions, about 5 different versions of pbbuttondsd
and associated tools, booted into t openfirmware and did
a firmware reset and the machine still doesn't work the
way it should. Under OSX things are still OK, but I find
OSX a PITA.

I also have had fiends buy current model powerbooks intending
to run Linux on them and then have to wait 6 months for
the Linux drivers to be stable enough to run Linux on it.

Finally, I think all current Apple laptops have wireless
using the broadcom chip for which no driver exists under
Linux.

I won't be buying an iBook or a powerbook any time in the
near future.

I'd crawl over an acre of 'Visual This++' and 'Integrated
