Give it a rest, you're two year too late!!! : [RCSE] Caballeros, 2.4, Attention Everyone,

2008-06-05 Thread Flying High
Martin and all,

Cect, I was flying on 72Mhz at the Toss contest
recently and I'd be glad to show you the 2.4Ghz radio gear
that I use on my glider, Heli's and other toys. Why fly on
72Mhz when my shirt says otherwise?!?!? BECAUSE IT WORKs
and I CAN! :-)
I fly on HAM gear as well, all FUTABA (go firure!?!), if
you pay close attention you'll see me use all the different
Futaba radios that are out and soon to be coming out to
Market (the secret stuff)... not just my trusty 8U radio on
72Mhz. All my radios are programmed to all items found in
my hanger, nice to be able to swap a simplie Rx and not
have to worry about wiskers sticking out of my stuff unlike
others!!!

Martin, does that mean that the FASST system will operate
 on both 2.4Ghz and
72Mhz??? Wowzer, is THAT considered forward thinking or
 what?...(What was

All I can say is it's going to create a nightmare for me
 when I do the NATS
launch matrix (Note to NATS Registrar: Need to find the
 FASST systems fast -
no pun intended - going to wreak havoc is we put them in
 and standard 72Mhz
systems in the same flight group)

Good Lift and Good-Luck to all at the NATS...I'll miss

  Martin,
Take a look at the following link and the 3-4

Are the fellows in the orange clothing the same

 was 2.4 and
sailplanes, and I still feel IMHO that JR offers
 more flexibility and
better RX's for our competition sailplanes and
 large scale models
  with
multiple servos and high power requirements. I also
 don't often
venture in to the large aerobatic arena so it would
 be unfair for me
to comment on that phase of the hobby. I do know
 something about
Helicopters, and have always found that JR has had
 the best
flexibility and options for programming. Even with
 all the
  limitations
of the 12X over the 14, that guy Quique somehow
 manages to get the
12X to do enough that he is not embarrassed to show
 up at a contest.
Enough said I hope the Futaba is always good to
 you. Larry

[RCSE] Visalia or NATS, which is a better contest?

2005-08-03 Thread Flying High
The best contest, in my opinion is... the one you can
attend! It's not easy to attend all these contest
throughout the country, we attend the ones we can. We meet
some interesting characters and become long-life time
friends with!
Last time I checked, this R/C stuff was listed as a hobby.
Something to past the time with and enjoy our free time on!
Put a contest together and call it what you want, what ever
format you want... let's just meet up at these events and
pass on some great stories to share while hunting down
those thermals!

Thermals to everyone,

[RCSE] The NATS, Format: 2M, Unlimited, F3X, HLG, RES, NOS, etc...

2005-08-02 Thread Flying High
Guys-guys;

Drop one day of 2M for a full day of RES, come on... I have
more money invested in 2M to let one day of flying go. We
all need our fix to fly our toys and meet up with our
soaring friends, right!?!?! Hey, simple solution... take a
vote as to what order each class should be flown on what
days and make every class fly 2-days! I attended the NATS
to fly a full week and get my soaring fix!

It's just a matter of putting our heads together to make
this work, we have a bunch of 2-day contest through out the
year for one type of class, why not make it work so we can
have 2-Days of flying for each class, sure maybe the HLG
guys don't have the number of pilots as other classes do to
justify such a thing, but they love their planes and they
want to fly as much as possible as well with pilots from
all over the country to complete against. Let's work out
the details for next year, plenty of time to work out the
logistics and the Muncie field is too awesome to just fly
Soaring for 1 week, hell... make it a Month of Soaring!
People will attend what classes they want and that's that.

To fly a few rounds and then to be called a National
Champ does not seem right, sure we can sit behind our
computers back home and come up with ideas to drop a day
here to add a day there for this class over that class...
drop nothing, add more days. I know it might become a
thing about getting enough people to volunteer to help run
the contest... We have enough retired to and we can all
pitch in to help out, it's like that back home are our home
fields, right!

LET'S JUST GET OUT AND SOAR!! Looking forward to next
year!

my 2 cents,

Edgar

[RCSE] Okay, change the subject to something more informative! Let's talk about The golden rules!!! shall we?!?!?!

2005-08-02 Thread Flying High
Rules 101

Class is in session. Let me see a show of hands of those
not wishing to attend... hit delete now! :-(

Hey, what are some of the gentlemen rules we all should
follow but they really don't get mentioned or posted??

You know... like if you join a thermal and one guy is
turning one way, you should join in by turning in the same
direction, etc...

What are some other good guidelines to follow in the quest
for GREAT SPORTSMANSHIP!!?!?!

Hello Gordy :-) (can't resist any longer)

What is good sportsmanship anyways? Jumping in a corn
field to help a fellow pilot find his plane and then having
an allergic reaction all over your body because of this
good deed???

You bring a quick shade and you let other share in your sun
blocking device

WHAT IS GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP AND can you provide examples?
I'm sure in the process one can pick-up on something new
and learn. After all, it's not like we compete to attain a
$$$ purse for a top standing, right.

Just throwing this out there. We can talk about contest
format for the next NATS all day and we have all year to do
this.

Thanks,

Edgar
The Soaring Junkie

P.S. Yes, I'm bored and miss that Muncie flying!

I hate to burst your bubble, John. But, yes, many many
 need the contest
format to have fun. Yes, I pitty them too. Especially
 when they argue over
 the rules!!

The really good pilots don't argue. They just show up and
 compete. The
others have to fuss over the details.

But what are we going to do? They are a large bunch and
 sometimes they buy
 the soda pop.

 Here's an idea: Elvis impersonators!
 That's what we need. DANG!

 Pathetic.

[RCSE] Soaring Junkie Survives Thru the NATS

2005-07-31 Thread Flying High
The 2005 Nationals Soaring events are in the books, what a
fun filled week it was! As Daryl mentioned before, we
Southern California guys are soiled with our weather back
home! Muncie was an experience I'll never forget and as
always was another great opportunity to match the names we
find on this exchange with the person's face! Made some
good thermal friends and I know we'll meet up again! Heard
some great soaring stories and witnessed some fantastic
flying.
I learned first hand what landing in the bean field is all
about, another great experience and the folks back home
will never let me forget this one as well! This goes
beyond the Walk of Shame teasing, something I'm used to
by now. Yes, I've grown THICK SKIN OVER THE YEARS!

It's nice to see the TRUE meaning of SPORTSMANSHIP among
our soaring community. I had some minor problems with a
glider of mine after a hard flight and was in need of some
building/repair supplies, Barry Kennedy, Eber Graham and
others were quick to lend a helping hand to get my bird
back up and running for the next round! Stuff like this
keeps me coming back to these soaring gatherings. We're
all kids at heart out to have some fun under the HOT Sun
and to just talk about our passion for soaring! Gordy is
one such person that can talk your ear off and I want to
thank him FOR HIS WORDS OF WISDOM he SHARED WITH ME...
Gordy does know a thing or two and we can easily learn from
his experiences from traveling from one place to another.
Keep up the great work and keep pouring that extensive
knowledge of yours towards improving our hobby!
Special thanks to Jim Deck for showing us what class is all
about, love that 3M Gnome of yours... when you decide to
sell that bird, LET ME KNOW!!! Marc Gellart, I still LOVE
YOU MAN!!! Thanks for keeping all of us flying and
enjoying this great contest format!
Larry Jolly, just thanks for being YOU! One class act to
follow and I'm honored to be able to fly with back home!
Craig Greening, great flying and keep out of that corn
field! Folks this is one strong, tough competitor, he
stayed around and gave the good fight to show off his
flying skills while barely able to open his eyes from all
that swelling from the pollen reaction he experienced while
heading into the corn fields to help another soaring pilot
find his downed glider in this tall stuff. He didn't think
twice he just jumped in the corn in search of that glider
and Craig paid that price with an allergic reaction to his
face and body! Most of us would have thrown in the towel
but not Craig; he just kept on fighting and showed off his
flying skills to win WOOD in 2M and Unlimited! As Albert
would say, He's got b#$#s of steel!!”

Sorry I had to run off the field of Friday after my last
flight, but Albert and I had to run to catch a Boeing 737
to take us back home. Great flying with you all and keep
those hot thumbs active in search of those thermals!!

There are too many names to thank for this past week but
special thanks to everyone whom volunteered their time to
run this contest and I'll see back in Muncie next year!

[RCSE] Looking for an RES plane to borrow for the NATS... please!!! I'll take good care of her!!! promise

2005-07-16 Thread Flying High
Hello guys,

Looks like I'll have the fortune of attending the NATS this
year for the first time and I'm looking forward to meeting
up with some familiar names from this exchange! Always
good to match the name with a face!

Since this might be a rare event to attend, I'm trying to
get as much flying in as possible and will like to fly RES
on Friday... any chance of borrowing a competitive RES ship
for Friday? Might be a long shot but I have no SHAME in
asking for a hand-me-out... any AVAs, Topaz, or such planes
out there that I can borrow, I'll take real good care of
the glider as if it were my own. :-)

Thanks in advance,

[RCSE] 3.7m Soaring Machine for Sale NEW in Box Molded and under $1500.00

2005-07-05 Thread Flying High
Yes, it has a 3.7m wingspan
and Visalia is around the corner and the entry form is
being passed around so we can gear up to be there in
October. This post is for that pilot that wants one of the
best gliders on the market, I have a 3.7 X-tail glider for
sale, you will need to gear it up with your taste of
electronics.
With a wingspan of 3.7m, you'll be able to range out deep
to catch that thermal and still see the darn glider! One
big plus for us pilots that have trouble seeing at great
distances these days.
Let me know if you're interested in this 3.7 SHARON X-tail
I have, I'll provide the details and pictures if needed.
Grab it while you can, no waiting around to get your hands
around this large glider! You'll have plenty of time to
get it ready for the biggest show around!!!

[RCSE] NATS Bound, need some help

2005-04-26 Thread Flying High
Is anyone from Southern California Driving up to the NATS,
would they mind helping take some gliders up with them? or
does someone have a transport container they wouldn't mind
lending out for the airline trip in order to protect some
gliders?

Please give me a shout out if you can help out!

Thanks in advance,

Re: [RCSE] Another Hi-Start disaster...

2005-04-19 Thread Flying High
Ahh, the good old days of Hi-start disasters. I had my
share of them when I started out with my trusty GP 2M
spirit, which I still have and will keep for my son to
learn on!

I remember being soo excited when I bought my hi-start and
now had a means to launch my plane without flying up on a
slope. No one told me the proper way to use this device.
I pulled back on it and hooked up my new freshly built
balsa 2M spirit... did a quick radio check to make sure
everything was on! Plane was released and off towards the
sky to went, straight up without inputs!!! WITHOUT ANY
INPUTS!!! I watched the plane RAINBOW into the ground on
the other END!!! Yes, I remember my first hi-start
experience!!! Some of us do things the hard way!!! I'm
still learning to lauch one of these planes correctly!

Thermals to everyone,

OK, now for a differing and contradictory opinion...

I have flown many many gliders over my 27+ years of
 model soaring. When I
had the opportunity to fly a Sharon, I took it. When I
 had the opportunity
to buy that Sharon 3.7 Pro - X tail, I jumped at it. It
 is my one and only
thermal duration, or F3J contest bird. It floats in
 light lift better than
almost any other glider. It will, and I have hand
 launched this cow and
climbed out in tight little thermals. It is not a Cow.
  It is nimble, and
has great legs. It covers ground with the best of them
 and again better
than most. As for landing...it is a very good landing
 machine. Just ask
the guys that flew in last years Unlimited class at the
 Nats. It did not
let me down. Of course I was only flying for 2nd place
 until Josh had his
bad luck. But still, within 12 from the nail 90% of the
 time is not the
results one would expect from a Cow.

Keep in mind, I am not sponsored or paid to say any of
 this. I am a true
believer in the Sharon Pro 3.7 Cross Tail.

All of the above applies if you have set the airplane
 up correctly. It is
a big glider. If the set-up is not right, it could be
 difficult to fly
correctly. And for the record, if you haven't figured
 this out by now, I
 disagree totally with the Rabbit...

Of course, he could just be trying to keep you from
 getting oneI bet
he has two or three back-up Sharons in the briar patch
 with him;^)

   Happy flying

 a Sharon, I'm not

I'd assume that the Eraser would be better at
 working light or tight
lift, but what about relative flight speeds or climbing
 ability in lift? How
strong is the Eraser Xtreme wing? (I know the F3B wing is
 basically
bulletproof...love my Eraser) Will the RG-15 Sharon wing
 slow down nicely in
lift like the Eraser's MH-32 will?

[RCSE] 2-meters suck....??? Sure they do, but they do look Cool??!?!? Well some do....

2005-02-11 Thread Flying High
Les and Craig get my vote on 2M flying. THEY MAKE YOU A
BETTER TD PILOT for the bigger stuff!!! Too bad you don't
see many contest with 2M class these days, just like the
standard class that has come and gone... flying the shorter
wingspan stuff does sharpen your skills, another reason why
I've improved very slightly over the past years. Practice
and Practice is still the key as we all know it but you
should learn to be some what a Jack of all trades... is
that the saying???
2M pilots do need more friends! Hey, you don't have to
listen to me, but it would be nice to see more pilots
compete in this class. Okay, what is the 2M to get???
Which ever one you feel comfortable flying and feel it will
give you an edge! There's still many models out there to
fill your needs, I fly an Organic only because it's cool
looking, not because it floats like a feather or penetrates
in windy conditions or because it lands on a dime! I would
never fly a glider that does all that! I fly the ORGANIC
just because of it's looks!!! :-)

I've sat here on the sidelines for what, 4 years now,
 watching sporadic
attacks on 2-meter. Just grin and bear it has been my

But now, our national champ comes out and says 2-meter's
 suck?? Ow, oW OW!!!

How many of you got started with a 2-meter? When a new
 pilot finally
shows up at our flying field, more often than not they
 are flying a
2-meter. They only move on because everyone wants the to
 look good by
max'ing every flight (more easily, as skill requirements
 to do so with
2-meter are much higher), thus off to open they float.

I find 2-meter great fun! Hot rods of the sky, able to
 leap tall buildings
in a single bound (if there's lift). And yea, as I grow
 old(er) any my
eyes become a problem and reflexes slow, I'll slowly
 leave 2-m behind and
move to a bigger RES (along with open). 2-meter is not
 for the faint of
heart. But I'll always have a soft spot for a good,
 full-house
 work-it-across-the-sky hot rod of a 2-meter. I think
 2-m;s provide a much
better test of your flying skills than open or res planes
 do. And yea,
they suck when there's no lift! But hey, they provide a
 good separation of
the pilots from the flyers. It IS easier to fly a
 bigger plane. That's
part of what makes it so interesting. I guess you have
 to put me into that
 die-hard 2-meter camp.

This is all said with the utmost respect to Daryl. No
 attack on his
opinion is intended. He is the champ, afterall! But
 hey, I (and you)
don't HAVE to agree with him. Hell, here in Washington,
 that would imply
I'd have to listen to the guidance of governor Gregoire
 ... no, make that
governor Rossi ... no, Gregoire ... oops, no make that
 Rossi again ...
sigh, now Gregoire ... now HUH? (think I'll move to
 Idaho!)

2-meter friends just need more friends! :-)

Question: Don't know if an official word was passed out on

Don't we have enough interest to bring this back and help

How about restructuring some sort of TD Championship that

--- Daryl Perkins [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

The Triad was a real neat concept. If memory serves me
correctly, it started out with the SWC, the Rose Bowl
2 day, then Visalia representing the last leg. It was
awarded to the top scoring pilot over the three comps,
after scores from each contest were normalized to
1,000. It has died a slow death, with the death of the
Pasadena club. A few clubs tried to keep it alive, ISS
held the second leg, then the guys in Sac tried to
keep it alive. But I don't think anyone reported the
results to the proper person at Visalia, to award the
trophy. I made the trek to all the contests a couple
of times in search of the title, only to have the
 trophy not be awarded.

It may have been moved, but the last time I saw the
trophy (it's a perpetual trophy - and it's just awful
looking) it was in the trailer at Visalia. I dropped
it off and ran It's in a huge wooden box, very
 well protected.

I'd love to see it resurrected. Shows consistency,
amongst the top western soaring pilots.

[RCSE] Paging Larry Jolly and Congratulations to Larry for Winning Visalia this YEAR!!

2004-10-04 Thread Flying High
Larry,
Can you get in touch with me directly, need to ask you some
questions about your warbirds.

Now that the little business is out of the way, I'd like to
say, Great flying this weekend! You kept your cool and
remained focused to see this contest through. AS you said
to me earlier, I can still pull a Larry on this one...
BUT YOU DIDN'T and you earned top honors. Speaking from
experience, I can say that it's hard to win this contest
with the company on hand but it's a great feeling when
you're LUCKY enough to actually WIN IT ALL, right!?!?

For now we all should be home and will continue our quest
to get better and sharpen our skills so we can claim that
title someday. Thanks to all that put on this contest and
provide us with an excuse to come together to play with our
toys among GREAT people in the HOBBY!!!

See you all next year,
Edgar

[RCSE] Visalia update...

2004-10-02 Thread Flying High
Yes,... first day of Visalia is in the books...
And I don't care what you think of Gordy... he can hold his
own!!! That baby blue pike of his is making his time and
hiting that sweet spot.

Hey, if that is not enough... that night flying and all the
other kids stuff going on is great to watch.

Visalia, there's nothing like it. 300+ pilots all out to
have fun and enjoy each other company. Just ask Gordy, he
walks around from camp site to camp site asking buy me a
drink?!?!

All kidding aside, if you're not here then you need to ask
yourself WHY

Sure it's a long way to travel for you east coast guys, but
where else can you find yourself going up against the best
of the USA Soaring Pilots??? When the soaring stuff is
done, all the fun start. Night Ops on flying Rockets to
flying stick combat, tons of fun.

Make plans to join in on the fun!!!

See you all here next year.

[RCSE] Visalia Bent Wing contest... Got TOPAZ???

2004-02-14 Thread Flying High
Okay, who else is thinking of attending this friendly
contest in May? After reading the sign up sheet on their
web-site... I take it they will only allow RES ships
without foam wing, so my Topaz type of ship should be good,
right?
Yes, I sent a message to the CD and I'm waiting for a rely
but I'd just like to see how many other pilots are in my
same boat??

Thanks and let's all just get along...

Edgar

funny... I thought it was the pilot and not the plane that
won a contest, I used to think it was the other way around
before... I hope they let me come play with them in May.
I have my travel plans all made out!!

Thanks
