But, not for long. The newest startup out of Los Angeles startup incubator/studio Science, Inc, HelloInsights.com, is looking to decode the secrets behind popularity and effectiveness of posts on the popular "pinning" site. HelloInsights launched today, using its own proprietary algorithms to figure out who are the most effective pinners, track popular items, and help brands figure out the best to reach out to users on Pinterest. HelloInsights is based on technology acquired earlier this year by Science Inc. from PinPuff, a developer of PInterest analytics tools. As part of the launch, HelloInsights said that Science Inc. has made an investment in the firm; no details of that investment were announced. SolarReserve Raises $586M For South African Projects ---- Santa Monica-based solar energy project developer SolarReserve has raised $586M in a combination of equity and debt, for two South African projects, according to reports today. The funding came from FirstRank Bank Ltd, with equity from Kensani Capital Investments, Intikon Energy, IDEAS Managed Fund and GCL-Poly Energy Holdings Ltd. The funding goes towards a solar energy project being developed for South Africa's state owned utility, and will have a total capacity of 75 megawatts. Deloitte Announces Local Fast 500 Winners ---- The annual ranking of the fastest growing companies by Deloitte, the 2012 Deloitte Technology Fast 500, was released today, showing a healthy list of Southern California companies in growth mode. Topping the list for Southern California was EdgeCast Networks, the content delivery network headed by Alex Kazerani, which showed an astounding five year growth rate of 21406%. San Diego's Optimer Pharmaceuticals was number 15, at 18798% growth; Marina Del Rey-based TeleSign ranked 23 at 7534% growth; followed by FastSpring in Santa Barbara, with a 6742% growth rate. Next was San Diego's Neurocrine Biosciences, with 6225% growth rate at number 30; then ServiceNow, also in San Diego, with 4873% growth. Trius Therapeutics was ranked at 42, with 3420% growth for the San Diego firm, and Santa Ana-based Local Splash was at 46, with 3034% growth. Nimble Opens API ---- Santa Monica-based Nimble, the developer of web-based, customer relationship management (CRM) tools, said today that it has launched a new application programming interface (API) and application marketplace. The firm said the new API makes it easier for developers to connect any sales, marketing, customer service, or accounting platform with Nimble. Nimble's software-as-a-service helps users track their personal contacts including email, Twitter, Facebook, and other social interactions. The company said the new API is the first in a family of APIs to help developers create applications using Nimble's platform. Citysearch Launches Annual Business Ranking Polls ---- West Hollywood-based Citysearch said Tuesday afternoon that it has begun taking user input and polls for its "Best of Citysearch" award, which ranks the best local businesses on its site. The firm said that users can vote on different kind of businesses, ranking from such categories as vintage shops, menswear, kids shops, jewelry, and more in the site's top 10 cities. Sapphire Energy Snags COO From Solazyme ---- San Diego-based algae-based oil technology firm Sapphire Energy announced Tuesday that it has named Jeff Webster as Chief Operating Officer of the company. Webster joins the company from Solazyme, where he was COO. Webster also served at Tyson Foods' renewable energy arm, as well as Carmichael Training Systems, Kellogg Co., and ARCO. Sapphire Energy said Webster will oversee current and future business operations, business and project development and corporate affairs. WD Debuts Wireless Router Aimed At Streaming Media ---- Irvine-based WD said today that it has launched a new, 802.11ac wireless router and bridge. WD said the new device, the My Net AC1300, is aimed at providing high bandwidth streaming of Netflix, YouTube, onilne games, and Skype, and includes automatic prioritization of entertainment services traffic. The firm claimed that testing shows its router is faster than its competitors within the range of 30 to 75 feet. The company's new router also includes four Gigabit Ethernet ports, and two USB 2.0 ports for external storage. The new device retails for $189.99 for its router and $149.99 for the bridge version of the device. Biosynthetic Technologies Gets $7M ---- Irvine-based Biosynthetic Technologies, a firm developing synthetic biomolecules from plant oils, has raised $7M in funding from Monsanto, in addition to other funding from VP Ventures and other investors, the firm said recently. The company--which was part of the OCTANe Launchpad program--said the deal was part of a license and supply agreement between Monsanto and Biosynthetic Technologies. Biosynthetic said its bio-based synthetic oils "match or exceed" the performance characteristics of the highest quality petroleum-based oils currently used in the automotive and industrial lubricant sectors. Biosynthetic technologies is headed by Allen Barbieri, and has also been known as LubriGreen Biosynthetic Oils. http://www.socaltech.com/intelligence/index.php?action=showdeal&id=46557 Phone Halo Turns To Crowdfunding For Wallet Tracker ---- Santa Barbara-based Phone Halo has launched a crowd-funded project to develop a Bluetooth-based device to track users' wallets, the company said Tuesday. The company--started by two UC Santa Barbara graduates--said it is developing a device, about the size of a credit card, which will let users track their wallet or purse via GPS and Bluetooth, so that when a user's wallet or purse is separated from a user's iPhone, they can track down those devices. Phone Halo's executives include a number of Santa Barbara area executives with a track record, including Palmer Jackson, who was one of the first employees and seed investors in Callwave, and who also has served at Cogi and Ideocore; Scott Hawthorne (MetaCreations/Digital Beach); Russ Sharer (Occam Networks) and Jacques Habra. The firm said it has launched a crowd funding project seeking $250,000 to fund its efforts. http://www.wallettrackr.com/ SpaceX Tests Grasshopper Rocket ---- SpaceX, the Hawthorne-based commercial spaceflight and rocket operation headed by tech mogul Elon Musk, showed a successful test of a new, vertical takeoff and landing vehicle Tuesday, the SpaceX Grasshopper. The company said the 10 story vehicle lifted nearly two stories in an 8-second, test hop in McGregor, Texas earlier this month. The test is the first toward creating reusable rockets, which would allow a rocket to land on earth--intact--rather than being destroyed on re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere. The firm said its Personalized Marketing Platform is aimed at brand, to help them turn their fans into customers. Fan Appz said it differs from other, social media marketing products because it is focused on helping brands close a sale. The firm's software runs across such social services as Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Tumblr, Pinterest and Instagram. Jon Siegal was previously a VP of Sales at Siebel Sytsems., and also served at IBM and other companies. Call of Duty: Black Ops II Hits Stores ---- Activision's latest title from the Call of Duty franchise, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, hit the stores Tuesday, as Activision looks to set another record for sales for the combat game. Activision has consistently set sales records with the franchise, with the most recent release--Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3--racking up an impressive $1B in sales last December in just 17 days. Modern Warfare 3 set numerous launch records ($400M in 24 hours, $775M in five days) last December. This year, the Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 release goes head-to-had with Microsoft's Halo 4 title, which was just released last week, racking up $220M in opening day sales. Activision is based in Santa Monica. Minitime Takes On Family Vacations ---- A new, Los Angeles-based startup, MiniTime launched today, looking to make it easier for families to plan their vacations. The company, headed by John Smelzer and founded by Nimrod Lev and Oleg Sandler, revealed that it has raised $1M in a seed funding from Ross Levinsohn and other angels, and is now looking to make it easier for families to find accommodations and attractions for families.
