Honor the socalTECH 50 On December 10th!

Join us on December 10th to help honor this year's socalTECH 50--and also
join the technology and digital industry's best holiday party of the year,
the Digital Family Reunion!

The SoCal tech scene continues to expand at an unprecedented rate. This
year, LA-based start-ups focused on branded content, apps, and big data,
and together raised more capital than any other city in the world after
Silicon Valley.

The demand for human capital continues to grow with more educational, job
force development and industry events supporting the expansion. There’s
plenty of reasons to celebrate the SoCal region. Please join us at the
Skirball Cultural Center on Wednesday, December 10!

Tickets are now available:

Soci Gets $1.5M For Social Media Marketing
----
San Diego-based Soci, a developer of a social content discovery engine
and social media marketing software product, has raised $1.5M in a
Series A funding. The company said the round was led by angel Peter
Fischer (Shepherd Ventures) and Silicon Valley Growth Syndicate. Soci,
led by Afif Khoury, develops a social content discovery and marketing
engine. The company said it will use the funding to expand its
product, which is aimed at national digital service providers, media
outlets, marketing agencies, national franchises and enterprise
clients.

Snapchat Now Alerting Users On Third Party Apps
----
After a massive leak of compromising photos due to a third party app
using Snapchat's "unofficial" API, Venice-based Snapchat has been on
the defense, trying to dissuade users from using unauthorized, third
party apps. Snapchat said last week that it will start notifying Snap
users when it detects they may be using third party apps, and ask
those users to change the password and stop using those unauthorized
apps. The move is the first move to improve the company's security and
reliability after the massive image leak. That leak was attributed to
poor security practices by a third party, Snapchat application, which
was taken advantage of by hackers. Snapchat is not--so far--shutting
off access to the application by third party app developers.

WiGo Seeded By Rad, Mateen
----
Boston-based WiGo (Who Is going Out), a developer of mobile apps to
help college students coordinate their social lives, has scored seed
funding from Sean Rad and Justin Mateen, the two local entrepreneurs
behind hit app Tinder. According to reports, the two were among a
number of angels in a $700,000 seed funding for WiGo. The round also
apparently included Paul English of Kaya and Ben Fischmann (Rue La La)
and Kevin Colleran (Facebook).

Lettuce Blocks New Users Accounts After Intuit Buy
----
Los Angeles-based Lettuce, the startup headed by Raad Mobrem which was
acquired by Intuit in May, is shutting of new accounts to the
company's inventory and order management software. According to the
company, it decided to shut access to new accounts in order to
"accelerate our progress with QuickBooks Online". The company said
existing customers will continue to have access to the software.
Lettuce said its team is working on enhancing the order and inventory
experience within QuickBooks Online.

DermTech Withdraws IPO
----
La Jolla-based DermTech, a developer of diagnostic, gene-based testing
for skin diseases, has withdrawn its IPO, saying in a filing with the
SEC that it has determined not to proceed with an offering at this
time. No other reason for the withdrawal was given by the company,
which had filed for an IPO in May, DermTech had initially only
targeted a fundraising of $25.0M on the NASDAQ as DMTK. The company
is backed by angel investors, including Gary Jacobs and his firm,
Jacobs Investment Company, as well as angels from the Tech Coast
Angels.

November 19, Irvine -- Gamification: How to Improve Businesses and Lives.
Tech Biz Connection. A key goal of business is to attract and engage a
group of people with a common passion or interest, and then activate them
to purchase. Many marketers are looking to leverage online social
networking for this purpose, but the results have been mixed. Adam Sarner,
a Gartner analyst, has projected that over 75 percent of Fortune 1000
companies will undertake some kind of online social-networking initiative
for marketing or customer relations in 2014. Through gamification,
organizations can take control of their brand experience by engaging
users, encouraging them to join a community, drive active participation,
share with friends outside the community, and even recruit friends.
Gamification enables you to turn customers into fans, and fans into
evangelists. Join our panel of experts to learn how to utilize
gamification in your business. . See
