San Diego-based 3D Robotics, is looking to let anyone develop and operate their own personal, drone aircraft, and is currently selling parts, instructions, and more for hardware hackers to create their own remotely controlled unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The firm came to light last week when the editor of Wired Magazine, Chris Anderson, said he was leaving the magazine to work full time on 3D Robotics (which is doing business as DIY Drones). Drone aircraft have become a staple of the military, particularly in such locations as Afghanistan and Iraq; however, they've been costly and unavailable to civilians. http://www.diydrones.com Boingo Wins Three Norwegian Airports ---- Boingo Wireless reported another airport win this morning, saying it has been selected to manage and operate Wi-Fi services at three, Norwegian airports. Boingo said it was selected by Oslo Lufthavn Tele & Data AS (OLTD) to operate the Wi-Fi networks at Oslo Airport (OSL); Bergen Airport, Flesland (BGO); and Stavanger Airport, Sola (SVG). The three airports serve more than 30 million passengers a year. Financial details of the win were not announced. Boingo said it now manages Wi-Fi services at 20 European airports, serving 275 million passengers; the company says is now manages Wi-Fi at more than 60 airports worldwide. Regulus Gets $80.9M In Financing Efforts ---- La Jolla-based biopharmaceuticals firm Regulus Therapeutics, which is developing microRNA-based biopharmaceuticals aimed at oncology, fibrosis, hepatitis C and metabolic diseases, said it has raised $80.9M in total proceeds from its IPO, a private placement, and convertible note. The firm said $50.9M came from its sale of common stock, $25.0M in a private placement to AstraZeneca AB, and $5.0M from a convertible note sale to Biogen Idec. The firm said those funds will enable it to "executive its current strategic objectives" for the foreseeable future. Life Technologies Buys Advanced Microscopy Group ---- Carlsbad-based life sciences equipment company Life Technologies announced today that it has acquired Advanced Microscopy Group, a developer of imaging systems for research microscopy. Financial terms of the buy were not disclosed. Life Technologies said that Advanced Microscopy Group (incorporated as Westover Scientific, Inc.) will become part of its Flow Cytometry and Imaging business unit. Fallbrook Technologies To Move HQ To Texas ---- San Diego-based Fallbrook Technologies, which develops continuously variable planetary (CVP) transmissions for the electric bicycle and automobile market, said today that it is moving its headquarters out of San Diego to Cedar Park, Texas. The firm said the move comes because the "vast majority" of its staff is already located in the area. Fallbrook announced the move with the appointment of a new CFO, John K, Penver, who replaces current CFO Nicole T. Nicks. Penver was previously CFO of Active Power, a Texas developer of battery backup systems. Mindspeed In Chinese Small Cell Rollout ---- Newport Beach-based Mindspeed reports that its baseband systems-on-a-chip (SoC) is being used in a TD-SCDMA small cell rollout in China. The firm said its chips are being used by China Mobile Group, Jiangsu Company, Ltd., Suzhou Branch to deliver wireless access for residential and enterprise customers, serving 10 million subscribers. MIndspeed did not say of fiscal impact the deployment has. Stacking Up Southern California's Cheap/Free 4G Wireless Providers ---- A number of services have emerged in Southern California in the last few months, offering up free, or very inexpensive, 4G wireless connections. All of the providers are leveraging the 4G wireless network of Clearwire, the 4G wireless firm closely linked to Sprint, and most of those firms are looking to provide very fast, 4G wireless service for lots less than typically charged by cell phone carriers for access. (More...) http://bit.ly/RzDsRN Boingo Extends VPN Support To Windows, Mac ---- Boingo Wireless, the Wi-Fi network operator, said Friday that it has added virtual private network (VPN) support to the Mac and Windows version of its Wi-Finder app. The new feature helps users protect themselves from possible security issues when using wireless networks. Boingo's VPN features have been available in the company's iOS applications since this summer. Virtual private networks are used to encrypt data being transmitted over wireless and other networks. Boingo said VPN support is free for all of its users. Size and timing of the round was not announced. Nanoogo operates an online website which lets kids share their talents--photos, drawings, and creations--online in a social forum. The firm was one of a number, previously unannounced investments by the Tech Coast Angels. The Tech Coast Angels also released new figures on its investment activity, saying that for the first three quarters of 2012, it invested in 23 deals, worth approximately $5M in direct TCA investment.
