Amazon said that it has optioned "Those Who Can't", a comedy show written by Andrew Orvedahl, Adam Cayton-Holland, and Benjamin Roy, the writers behind the web series The Grawlix. Amazon has been in the process of optioning different content projects, which it intends to turn into original content for its streaming video service. The firm set up shop recently in Los Angeles as part of those efforts. Reflexion Health Raises $4.25M ---- San Diego-based Reflexion Health, a new startup using Microsoft's Kinect for physical therapy products, has raised $4.25M in a funding round, the company said this morning. Reflexion Health said the funding came from West Health Investment Fund, and that it has licensed West Health Institute's Kinect-based physical therapy software. Reflexion Health has also moved into West Health's business incubator. Reflexion Health's first software product uses Kinect for Windows for motion tracking to provide interactive feedback and education for patients with musculoskeletal disease. The company said its application helps physical therapists and physicians measure a patient's rehabilitation and eventually improve patient adherence to prescribed physical therapy. http://www.socaltech.com/intelligence/index.php?action=showdeal&id=46162 Nirvanix Offers To Shift Data Due To Hurricane ---- San Diego-based online storage provider Nirvanix said Monday that it would shift customer data from its New Jersey data center for free, due to Hurricane Sandy. Nirvanix said customers currently storing data at that data center can shift that data to its other locations, on a temporary or full time basis, free of charge. The company said its data center operations there were normal, and that its data center there is fully redundant and backed by diesel-generators, but it would also like to provide its customers with extra piece of mind. Nirvanix also has data centers in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Dallas, Frankfurt, and Tokyo. Nirvanix offers up an enterprise focused, cloud storage service. RealD Gets Chinese Win ---- Los Angeles-based 3D movie projection technology provider RealD said Monday that it has signed a deal with Chinese theater group Womei Theater Chain. RealD said it will install its technology on 100 screens across China. Financial impact of the deal was not announced. RealD said it has already started installing screens for Womei, and that installs are expected to continue over two years. RealD said that it currently is installed on approximately 850 cinema screens in CHina ,and has future commitments to install an additional 1,200 more in that country. Red 5 Studios Lands $15M More ---- Aliso Viejo-based videogame developer Red 5 Studios has just raised $15M in a debt funding round, according to a regulatory filing by the company. Details on the funding have not yet been announced by the company. Red 5 develops massively multiplayer, online games, and was started by the former team that developed World of Warcraft. The firm's first MMO is called FireFall, a free-to-play MMO shooter game. Red 5 Studios has previously raised equity from Benchmark Capital, Sierra Ventures, and The9 Limited. http://www.socaltech.com/intelligence/index.php?action=showdeal&id=46157 Unusual Perk For SoCal Technology Firm: Unlimited, Paid Vacation ---- In what might be one of the more unusual perks for a Southern California high tech company, LRN, a developer of enterprise compliance and ethics software, has an unlimited, paid vacation policy. The firm's policy recently came to light in a WSJ article. The firm--which looks to be recruiting Java Developers, project managers, and UX/UI designers in its LA location--apparently lets employees take off as much time as they feel like they need, as one of the perks for working for the company. The benefit is unusual in what often seems to be an always-on, always-working, go-go environment in the Silicon Beach startup community. LRN--which is around the corner from UCLA--serves such customers as 3M, Dow, Johnson & Johnson, Loews, Pfizer and Siemens. The Resumator Gets $2.1M From Rincon ---- Rincon Venture Partners, the Santa Barbara-based venture capital fund run by Jim Andelman, John Greathouse, and Brian Kelly, has led the investment in a developer of social recruiting software tools for companies, The Resumator. According to Resumator, the Series B round was led by Birchmere Ventures, Rincon Venture Partners and Salesforce.com, and also included Innovation Works and ff Venture Capital. Resumator develops social media recruiting tools, which helps startups find and recruit employees. Resumator is unusual in that it is located in Pittsburgh, PA--Rincon tends to make mostly Southern California investments. Rincon led a $700,000 Series A round in 2011 in The Resumator. http://www.socaltech.com/intelligence/index.php?action=showdeal&id=46141 Adhesive Games Gets $18M For Massively Multiplayer Game ---- Adhesive Games, the Alhambra-based, independent game publishing studio which is part of Meteor Entertainment has just scored a big, $18M funding round from Rustic Canyon Partners, Chinese game publisher KongZhong, and others to help bring its first title to market, Hawken. Hawken is a first person shooter, combat-based massively multiplayer online game focused on mechanized combat. According to Meteor Entertainment, the funding included Rustic Canyon, KonZhong, FirstMark Capital, and Benchmark Capital. The funding from Rustic Canyon looks to have been led by Nate Redmond; Mitch Lasky, who made his name here in Los Angeles in founding JAMDAT, is also involved with the firm via Benchmark Capital. Adhesive and Meteor are looking to launch Hawken in December. The firm said the sleeve lets iPod users connect to the Internet anywhere the company provides 4G coverage, without a monthly contract or fees. FreedomPop is providing free, 4G wireless data, with up to 500MB of free 4G wireless Internet every month, along with premium, higher limit plans. The company is venture backed by Mangrove Capital, DCM, and Atomico, the investment arm of Skype founder Niklas Zennstrom. The new iPod Touch sleeve costs $99.00.
