Insights and Opinions: Forget Politics, Just Shut Up And Sell
----
It's election season, so we thought that for today's Insights and
Opinions section, we thought we'd share the advice of John Greathouse,
of Rincon Venture Partners, with his piece, Shutup and Sell:
Entrepreneurs Shouldn't Discuss Religion, Politics Or Sex(ual
Orientation):

In 2003, the lead singer of the country music group, The Dixie Chicks,
criticized then-current President George Bush during a concert in
London. The reaction among the group's American fans, who were largely
politically conservative, was visceral and negative. One irate fan
sent the group a death threat, which offered them "clemency" if they
would, "shut up and sing." Business leaders should not need a death
threat to encourage them to follow similar advice, substituting "sell"
for "sing."

A startup leader's primary responsibility is to maximize the return to
its stakeholders, which include the company's global and local
neighbors, employees, suppliers, customers and investors. When a
corporate leader makes a public statement that increases the friction
involved in satisfying their company's value proposition, the
executive is betraying each of these constituents. Be boring in
public. If you want to be an opinionated blowhard in private, go for
it. (More...)

ACTV8.me Wins WSOP
----
Beverly Hills-based ACTV8.me, a developer of mobile, interactive
applications for the television and entertainment market, announced
today that it has linked with Caesars Interactive Entertainment, to
produce an application for the World Series of Poker (WSOP). Financial
details of the win were not disclosed. The firm said it has created a
"second-screen" experience for the WSOP telecasts on ESPN. The app
currently runs on the iPhone or iPad, and the company said an Android
version will follow in a few weeks. The new app includes interactive
and social content, such as polls, trivia questions, and predictions.

Qualcomm Technologies Links With Oracle On Java for M2M
----
San Diego-based Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., a subsidiary of Qualcomm
Incorporated, said that it has linked with Oracle to bring the popular
Java programming language to its machine-to-machine (M2M) chipsets.
The two said they are working to bring Oracle Java ME Embedded 3.2 to
ATI's QSC6270-Turbo chipset. Those chips are used for M2M applications
with embedded cellular capability. The two said the support will allow
developers with little mobile experience to write and execute Java
applications directly on the Qualcomm chips, which are used for 3G
connectivity in embedded devices.

ESET Fixes Android Vulnerability
----
San Diego-based security software provider ESET said today that it has
released a new, free app to fix a vulnerability of Android devices.
ESET said its new app, ESET USSD Control, removes and prevents a flaw
in certain Android-based smartphones, which could potentially wipe all
of a user's data. ESET said the flaw is present in certain devices
running Android 4.1.x or lower, and makes it possible for criminals to
take over a device using a text message or QR code. ESET said the app
is available on Google Play.

TCVN Dangles $25,000 Cash in Survivor Pitch Contest
----
It looks like the annual TCVN Survivor event is heating up this year,
as the group said it will be offering up a new $25,000 cash investment
for startups looking to pitch their company in front of an audience.
TCVN has been running its Survivor events for a number of years, with
the last event being held in 2010. This year's event looks to have
slightly changed the format of the event, requiring prospective
entrepreneurs to fill out an application to present, and send a quick
pitch video to the group to qualify; prior events had allowed anyone
in the audience to make a 30 second pitch to the judges. The prior
events had awarded products and services to the winners--this looks to
be the first year that the group is offering up an actual, cash
investment to the winner. The TCVN Survivor event is being held
November 15th at Chapman University in Orange.

Nimble Updates Social CRM Tool
----
Nimble, the customer relationship management software developer headed
by Jon Ferrara, has updated its online, social CRM tool, saying that
it has added new features such as ways to filter and cut through the
noise of online social activity, plus new task management tools to
link tasks with contacts and deals. The firm also said it will be soon
offering up a feature to help remind people of the last communications
with a contact, and when a contact is slipping away. Nimble's new
update is heavily focused on making it easier for people to manage
their social interactions, including ties into Facebook, Twitter,
LinkedIn, Google+, HubSpot, MailChimp and foursquare. Ferrara is
applying what he learned by developing one of the original CRM
software products, Goldmine, into the new world of online, social
contacts. Nimble is backed by such investors as Google Ventures, Mark
Cuban, Jason Calacanis, Don Dodge, Dharmesh Shah, and others.

Givit Gets $2.5M For Social Video App
----
San Diego-based Givit, which develops social video sharing
applications and services, announced Tuesday that it has raised $2.5M
in a funding round. The new round came from ATA Ventures and JK&B
Capital. According to Givit, the funding comes along with a new, free
app which allows users to create and share personal videos from the
iPhone. The new app includes such features as live highlighting of
critical moments in live events; support for combining multiple clips;
no length restrictions; motion effects; cloud storage; and more. The
new service also includes 5GB of free storage on Givit's online
