Re: [Soekris] mSATA SSDs for a net 6501

2016-11-26 Thread Andreas Steinel
We're using our 6501 in a 19'' rack with additional fans for 5 years and it
still runs fine with the initial batch of dual 64 GB ADATA mSATA. We also
use additional heatsinks on all visible chips for better heat transport.
Machine also runs in a controlled temperatur and humidity environment.

Re: [Soekris] debian wheezy/jessie install on net5501-70 fails

2016-04-12 Thread Andreas Steinel
I have not installed on a net5501 in years, but what you can do is install
on an ordinary machine and then copy your installed OS back to the CF-Card.

I often do this in a VM with an attached volume of the exact size of the
card/disk (in my case a ZFS volume), then optimize everything including
serial terminal (also virtualized) and copying it then to the card/disk.

We switched to APU Boards

Not exactly the same NIC number (3 instead of 4), but they work very, very
well and are much cheaper. We're using two of them as a HA firewall and
DHCP/DNS Failover. PCengines announced the APU2 recently, with increased
core count and possible ECC memory configuration. (

Re: [Soekris] I see development of the net6801 has been dropped.

2015-10-07 Thread Andreas Steinel
Hi,

I also found the net6801 very interesting and a good step forward.
Recently, I replaced my two 5501 and 6501 with two apu's from pc engines.
Not exactly the amount of nics (only 3) and no PCIe expansion, yet it
serves my purpose and it is a good deal for a reasonable price. It's not
ARM based, but yields good performance for that price. I use it as a
virtualized high availability firewall appliance.

Hi Patrick,

If I remember correctly, net5501 is not i586, isn't it? It's 'only'
i486. At least it was in 2009 when I installed Debian Lenny on it.
Maybe that's the problem.

This mini-box.com is really a nice site - especially the how swap sharing
controller which could be used to connect two different usv packed up power
supplies to one soekris board. I have still some external power supplies

Hi Chris,

The OpenUPS2 looks really nice and has a 2,5'' mount option. Have you
installed it in a rackmount case? Should fit, shouldn't it?

Thank you for sharing your solution. How is the (complete) schematic
for your setup (I saw the fuses and bypass capacitor missing schematic
of phk which uses a similar setup as yours)? Is there also a charge
protecting circuit involved or is the battery charging restricted
(e.g. delta-V)?

And another important question: How can I get it to fit in the rackmount kit?

What is the current state of the onboard NiMH loader? On the homepage
and in the manual is stated, that a 'NiMH battery backup connector
with charge and monitoring' exists, has this been tried yet? If so,
does it work and with what NiMH battery type? Soren wrote in the
aforementioned post about releasing something, would this be hardware
or a software patch of the fpga or kind-a chip upgrade to implement
this battery charging functionality?

Andreas

[Soekris] Redundant Power Supply or battery backup for net6501

2014-08-01 Thread Andreas Steinel
Hi everyone,

there exist older entries for a redundant power supply or battery backed up
units, yet not so much up to date information about the beloved net6501.

Recently, I had a UPS failure which took down my rack-mounted net6501. I'm
interessted in either a redundant power supply or a battery backup unit,
which Soren claimed to be "released shortly" in early 2013 (Any news
Soren?).

I use 2 ADATA SX300 and they work also.

I also benchmarked one of the disks in Debian Wheezy 3.9-0.bpo.1-amd64 with
fio 2.0.8.
2184 IOPS and 140 MB/sec on read with this configuration:

[randr64]
name=randread_t64_b8
description='Random Read 8k Blocks (64 Threads)'
filename=/dev/sda
direct=1
rw=randread
blocksize=64k
runtime=30
numjobs=64
iodepth=4
group_reporting=1
time_based

Would be cool if you guys could provide some numbers too.

Dennis is right, backports work perfectly. You can also use the LEDs with a
